Amihai Eliyahu, who is minister for heritage, said in a post on X that his death marked "the right way to clean the world from this filth".

"No more imaginary peace/surrender agreements, no more mercy for these mortals."

He added: "The iron hand that will strike them [and it] is the one that will bring peace and a little comfort and strengthen our ability to live in peace with those who desire peace.

Haniyeh was staying in 'residence for war veterans'
More details are now emerging on the killinh of Ismail Haniyeh.

According to Iranian state media, Mr Haniyeh was killed at around 2am local time and was staying in a "special residence for war veterans" in Tehran.

The building was hit by an "airborne projectile".

Further investigations are ongoing to find out where it was launched from, the report adds.

The Hamas leader was killed overnight in Tehran, the Iranian capital.

Along with the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, there are also reports that a commander of Hezbollah was killed in Lebanon overnight.

Israel says it killed Fuad Shukr, who was the target of an "intelligence-based elimination" by fighter jets in Beirut.

Officials say he was responsible for a rocket attack that killed 12 people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday.

Hezbollah have released a statement saying Shukr was present in the building hit by Israeli strikes, but have not confirmed his death.

The group says the strikes led to the deaths "of a number of citizens".

"Since the incident, the Civil Defence teams have been working diligently but slowly to remove the rubble due to the condition of the destroyed layers," it reads.

"We are still waiting for the outcome that those concerned with this process will reach regarding the fate of the great and dear leader and other citizens in this place, so that the necessary action can be taken."
