Democracy Or Dictatorship? Tinubu’s Hypocrisy Exposed by Asonaijaaso: 9:20am On Aug 01
In the annals of Nigerian history, General Sani Abacha stands as one of the most vilified figures. His regime was synonymous with repression, and many so-called democracy freedom fighters, including Bola Tinubu, criticized Abacha to his grave. Today, however, the same Tinubu who decried Abacha’s tyranny is showing his true colors, revealing a disturbing resemblance to the military dictator he once opposed. The irony is thick, and the hypocrisy is staggering.

The Betrayal of Democratic Principles

Bola Tinubu rose to prominence as a fierce critic of military rule, championing democracy and the rights of the people. His relentless opposition to Abacha’s regime earned him accolades and support from Nigerians who yearned for freedom and democracy. Yet, in a cruel twist of fate, Tinubu’s government now stands accused of the very same oppressive tactics he once condemned.

The recent mobilization of military soldiers and police to suppress the proposed protest against the Tinubu administration’s policies is a stark reminder of the dark days of Abacha’s rule. How can a man who once fought for the people’s right to protest now deploy state machinery to silence dissent? The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

Constitutional Rights Under Siege

Under the guise of maintaining order, Tinubu’s administration is trampling on the constitutional rights of Nigerians. The right to peaceful assembly and protest is a cornerstone of any true democracy. Yet, in today’s Nigeria, expressing dissatisfaction with the government is met with intimidation, arrests, and violence. Are we really in a democratic society, or are we witnessing a dictatorship dressed in civilian garb?

Tinubu’s critics are not enemies of the state; they are concerned citizens exercising their constitutional rights. To label them as cabals and enemies of progress is not only disingenuous but also dangerously reminiscent of the rhetoric used by military dictators to justify their repressive actions.

A Tale of Two Regimes

While Abacha’s regime was undeniably brutal, it is important to examine the policies enacted then compared to what we have today. Abacha, for all his faults, did implement certain policies aimed at stabilizing the economy and maintaining national security. He did not burden the people with sudden, harsh economic policies that leave them worse off.

Contrast this with Tinubu’s abrupt removal of subsidies, which has plunged millions into deeper poverty. The hardship is palpable, and the government’s response has been to stifle the cries of the suffering masses rather than address their grievances. Tinubu’s administration appears more concerned with maintaining power than with the welfare of the people.

The Illusion of Democracy

It is time we ask ourselves: are we truly in a democracy, or are we living under a dictator who masquerades as a civilian? Tinubu’s actions suggest the latter. The deployment of force to quell protests, the dismissal of legitimate concerns as the work of “bad elements,” and the lack of meaningful dialogue with the populace all point to a government that has lost touch with its democratic ideals.

Tinubu’s critics are not cabals; they are the voice of the people. The use of force to silence them is a betrayal of the democratic principles that Tinubu once purported to uphold. It is a grim reminder that power can corrupt even the most vocal advocates of freedom.

Bola Tinubu’s government must be held accountable. Nigerians fought long and hard for democracy, and they deserve a government that respects their rights and addresses their needs. The current administration’s actions are a stark betrayal of those democratic values.

We must remain vigilant and continue to demand a government that truly serves the people, not one that rules through fear and repression. The spirit of democracy that once inspired Tinubu must be rekindled, and it starts with holding him to the standards he once championed. Anything less is an insult to the memory of those who fought and died for the freedom we now seek to protect.

Well said

The people are just out to express their fundamental rights as citizens of Nigeria as enshrined in the constitution. A morally right one at that as Nigerians has never, ever experienced this type of hunger, starvation and economic hardship in the history of the country.

The government should desist from provoking them as that would surely escalate the matter.

Wisdom is profitable to be directed.

Nigerians are hungry and angry!.

We need to focus on progress and not just the politics wey dey divide us. Make we give am chance to show wetin e fit do for the country instead of always throwing accusations. Naija deserve better conversations!

Tinubu has never been and will never be a democrat.

Tinubu is a notorious narcotics drug trafficker engaging in criminal state capture.

And my question to them is " why are you people playing politics with people's lives..

Must you play politics with people's lives..

It is not good this ways ..

Majority will be backing him on an empty stomach ..

I was a supporter of Tinubu, at the onset, but as each day goes by.....I see no vision or plan on a nationalistic angle.

All the crises we face now were caused directly or indirectly by fiscal policies he mad saying it will "improve" the country's situation.

How can the medicine taken for the illness have a side effect of death ?

We might be better off taking our chances with the illness itself.
