What does George mean in Bode's Yoruba language or Abraham in Ijaw or Pepple in Kalabari

Just like Jose Camacho is Peruvian name though it means nothing in Inca language, or a Suleiman Abdulkareem in Kwara having no meaning in Yoruba language. As long as it's recognised culturally, no problem. Pepple for example is Perekule, the European traders couldn't pronounce it and shortened it to Pepple. Jumbo is Jubo, JaJa is Jubo Jumofem, same reason, ease of trade. JaJas descendants now are bearing surname JaJa, first name English name, so you will be seeing Stanley JaJa, William Pepple, Emmanuel Jumbo etc

I read everything from hensben’s initial post U responded to and subsequent posts that followed; I know u didn’t start the whole insults/diatribes. Well, personally I feel u should’ve just ignored the first guy that struck out ur posts and ended it with with an offensive post.

I’m not holding u by my standards o, but personally I would’ve just ignored him and continue the discussion with more polite people that had commented on the topic. At most , I would report the post and move on with the discussion with someone else.

As regards the topic itself I understand the point Hensben was trying to make , tho using that Reno’s post on IG as the basis for making a a case for the way he writes English messed things up for him.

I don’t know how Reno thinks , but I really do not see the correlation between someone bearing an English name(which he was christened when he was a toddler and has no control over ) and being unable to speak their native language . English is the language of learning in Nigeria,it’s ironic most of the people he mentioned that became great with their native names actually speak the English language perfectly well ( I know some of them even wrote books in English language that won them international recognition ); So I don’t really understand what point he was trying to make. In the course of the discussion I discovered English seem not to be Hensben’s first or second language , so it’s understandable some of the basic rules of English language he’s unable to observe when he writes . I would not mock/castigate/blame him for this.

Personally I do not think a universal language is adoptable . I remember someone ( I don’t know if it was you ) pointed it out that having a grasp of the English language is one of the pre-conditions for u to work in the UN, but it’s actually funny that the Chinese representatives will always choose to speak their language at the general assembly knowing fully well most listeners don’t even understand “go” or “come” in mandarin. I did a little check on google that revealed with a population of little above 1.4billion , just 10million people in China speak English . Less than 1% of their population don’t speak English despite the country having a literacy level of 98.6% .

I’m not the best with figures but to me those figures above are saying the most populous country on earth with over 1.4billion has refused to Learn English nor any other potential universal language for reasons best known to them. So how will the dream of universal language u desire be achieved ?
Reno said only Africans take pride in speaking foreign languages, whereas they can’t speak their native language. I brought it here because some handle take pride in correcting my English and even go as far as mocking me which is comical when you are not British . I have a British friend who is a teacher, no time he has ever mocked me because of English because he understand i am not British, he even have interest in pigin because he has nigerians as brethren in jehovah witness who communicate with pigin sometimes unto naija things.

Isn't it funny that you still did not answer my question. Same old same old empty chest beating.
There is a reason I am asking you guys what exactly are the "African traditions" we're talking of and are proud of. grin grin

Secondly, you guys keep saying"white man's language" in a derogatory tone as if English should be hated. If you think it should be, why are both of us communicating in ENGLISH grin grin grin
Nobody is saying English should be hated, you are the one undermining African culture and language because we are not creative yet. When Africans will start being productive and exporting their product with written Yoruba just like the Chinese you will then realize how comical your suggestion is. Wizkid started essence with Yoruba intonation did it stop the music from going far.

It would be good to name who started this in order not to generalize wrongfully.
You can't see the unbridled joy I have right now seeing that none of them even recognize what they're fighting for. cheesy cheesy

See the way they all rushed me when I suggested adopting a universal language. It struck straight at the heart of our tribal awareness, when in essence, nobody even identifies what that is. cheesy

Imagine the heaviest sense of irony they all feel on the realization that they are castigating a language they are in fact learning, speaking and passing down to their own offsprings. cheesy

Isn't it funny?? cheesy I have asked 4 different people what these African traditions they are all raving about is in the 1st place and that was the END. grin grin
People suddenly realized they were fighting for nothing. They were just emotional and sentimental.

I WON. I won because logic would always trump sentiments and emotions.
Ive answered you before; language and culture is self value induced. Be proud and real with yourself and people will value you more. It is an identity, the day you lose your identity you become a wonderland in thought.

I haven't really watched neves. But we really need a KDB kinda player. Especially for Lukaku to work here. Or we get wingers who thrive on running in behind opp defenders, taking on players at top speed and looking to cut in or square play. The likes of Sterling, Vinicius, Gnabry, Coman, Mbappe.
It's a trap, ibime have been complaining about jourginho everytime

You have made good points, but it still doesn't take away from my main point of all these arguments.

Achieving global peace is a multi-pronged approach. There are key factors that affect humanity socially. LANGUAGE, RELIGION, POLITICS, TRIBAL CHAUVINISM, ECONOMIC SYSTEMS. etc.

We can solve these issues simultaneously but it will take time. We are already doing this on a global stage with relative success.

That the UN exists is testament to how united we are becoming as a society on the whole. This has never happened since the beginning of homosapiens civilization. Almost every person on earth is represented in the UN. Striking bargains everyday, averting crises and preventing major global wars like the ones we had.

Of course, it hasn't been perfect all around but it has been a gigantic step towards all human beings on earth understanding ourselves better and beginning to share common goals.

Language alone will not guarantee us a united world but it will be one step closer.
You're not being realistic and pragmatic with your takes on this issue. Obviously, English will become the universal language in this utopian world you're touting?

As intelligent species who have insatiable desires, the human race can never have one (universal) language, one religion, a unified economic system, etc. This is basic sociology.

For the singular reason that our wants and desires, abilities and talents, worldviews and predujices are diverse, humans can never a single language, religion, economic system, political system.

That feat has never been achieved in human history, and I don't think it will ever be achieved.

Even if in the future, a one-world government emerges, humanity will still never be able to have a single universal language, economic system, religion.

All these are unnatural.

How does it make sense saying our native languages should die out to enable the world have a universal language? This kind of thinking is simply due to mental slavery.

You might as well clamor for a return of the British colonial rule.

Once the language of a people is dead, their culture will also die naturally since language is one of the key elements in any culture.

Diversity is what makes the world beautiful; even nature is wonderfully diverse and encourages diversity.

Africans take pride in speaking language like English , French because those are the languages Africans were taught in schools from formative years up to the university level. Most European countries are taught in their own local language and then a foreign language is added as optional( like we have French in some schools in Africa) . Africans are not as privileged as their European counterparts who weren’t really forced to learn and adopt a foreign language like English as lingua Franca .

Someone like Wole Soyinka takes pride speaking English language because that’s the language of instruction in Nigeria where he had most of his education. If the prof had been spanish born and bred in Spain he would probably have maintained that same pride writing books in Spanish language , getting international recognition doing it too. This is where I have issue with Reno’s point . He added people like Wole Soyinka who takes pride in speaking and writing English ( a foreign language ) , to a list of those who achieved great things with native names and then in the next paragraph he’s criticizing other Africans who do exactly same just because they bear white man’s name. I no just understand his point with those two contradicting paragraph.

Like I said earlier , I don’t think it makes much sense mocking u that didn’t grow to speak and learn English as first or second language like most people here.

While reading the posts in the last few pages I saw a lot of sense in what he posted, Languages are just a means of cmmunication and many languages have died in this Nigeria. For us to have like 10 dominant languages and 3 major ones, Means 1000s of languages have died. Like the example you give in South South where every 2 km is a different language, so what is there to protect when you cant even communicate with nearby village thus adopting Pidgin, or even in many of those NorthEast and North central place where Hausa has replaced their local language

Huuuu, thank you, I'm blushing. cheesy cheesy knowing I was right, in the face of adversity is overwhelming.

I'm really very happy about yesterday's events. It highlights what can happen when fools group think. It showed the level of sheepish thinking on this thread people have talked about for a while.

Here I was spitting facts but because it touched people's tribal sensibilities, they just couldn't think straight.
I was waiting to hear a logical argument and all I was seeing was empty chest beating over and over again.
It is usually said, nothing is as powerful as a group of fools. If you enter an argument with them, they would bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. It's good that people I highly regard as intellectuals on this thread didn't fall for this. Yourself, Ibime, nateevs, afrodoc and some others. As for nihilist,it seems he has now made it his life mission to always take a position opposite from mine. Any argument I'm having on this forum, he must be liking and sharing my opponents rebuttal or insults. I mean, Its why I've said I suspect his motives when picking an argument with me.

Nobody could answer what African traditions were, simply because there is nothing like that. The question was a trick question, because there is nothing like African traditions. It's not a monolith. When people want to make that argument against anything foreign, they want to make it seem like many Africans have Soo many shared values when in reality, we don't.
Well, winning does feel great. See how myself and havertz10 were made to look like fools, when in essence, the group were the fools. Mocking and laughing at their own foolishness. grin grin

Speaking one language won't necessarily unite us or make us understand each other better.

There are way too many things that divide us, and I don't think language is the main culprit. But it will solve a lot of problems.

Imagine if Seun didn't enforce English in one of his rules and everyone here communicates in their local language. Raumde.ter and airm.ark blasting each other in ogbomosho dialect and ibi.me saying I no go gree in Ijaw. It will just lead to cliques and chaos. grin

But I believe Communication problem can simply be solved with human intelligence (AI / Technology). Afterall, language is a human construct like you said.
There is no reason for anyone to lose his/her language over it.
We should be more worried over other archaic things like religion that divides us. And they are not going away any time soon.

We have google translator today ( which is getting better everyday). soon enough, it will be so great, that all you will need is a device to wear around your neck to communicate with anyone in the world and they will understand you without problem. Like in the star wars or star trek.

You and any black man should be proud of numerous African traditions and cultures because they are highly regarded and respected

Jesus Christ, this man just went to post Wikipedia page on African cultures. grin grin

Roland I'm truly disappointed that you can't see the picture as a whole.

African culture doesn't exist because we aren't a monolith. We don't have one culture, we have a multitude.

And the truth is that, our culture is already as dead as can be. If you are a Christian or moslem, know that you are spitting on your culture, many of us and most likely our children won't get to officially learn our native languages in school. As I speak to you. Only the 3 major languages in Nigeria are taught in schools. What of minority tribes like ijaw, ogoni, urobo, anan, eket, Ibibio and many other smaller tribes. The local languages are already dying everyday. Children of all these aforementioned tribes are learning and utilizing English.

Let me go further into detail as to how my own Igbo culture is already dead.
Growing up in my grandfather's days, their greatest festive days, were the ofala day, the new yam festival to mark the beginning of a farming season and the coronation of a king.
Our great grand father's worshipped and revered their gods. Amadioha, oshimiri, ijele, Ani and chukwu. Only the last god was coopted by the religion to enable an easier conversion process.

Forget all these "traditional attires" you see today as our culture. My great grand father's people went mostly butt naked. They knew absolutely nothing of silk, cotton, wool etc that are being used as traditional dresses today which ironically was introduced to them by their colonizers and trade partners. They mostly went butt naked, with the women's breast enjoying fresh air every single day. Those nipples standing firm for all to see, waiting to be suckled. Occasionally covering their private parts with the skin of animals they've hunted in the bush.

The only thing that still shapes the Igbo cultural identity today is just the language and some cuisine. Even at that, those too are dying. Many igbos eat mostly cooked rice and enjoy beans as part of their daily meals. These were foreign to us. Nobody in igboland grew rice or beans.

I could go on and on, as to how our cultures are on their last breath but I would stop here.

As regards the highlighted: No, that's not why Africans take pride in speaking foreign languages. It's simply due to colonialism and inferiority complex the average African exhibits compared with other races, especially the whites and Arabs.

It's the colonial masters that introduced and enforced these foreign languages and foreign systems of education in those languages on their colonies.

Without unprecedented use of great force and violence and novel neocolonialism campaigns, the world can never be united under a single rule with a universal language, religion, political system, economic system.

It's mere wishful thinking and will never happen. Even if such happens in a world of fantasy, humans will still never be united.

To create a united world, you need humans to be perfect and enlightened without having traits like greed, lack of contentment, jealousy, envy, avarice.

But it's impossible to eliminate these traits in humans unless it's possible to engineer a new species of humans genetically with the traits you desire to have in the inhabitants of a united world.

All these are unnatural.

On the issue of African (this term is used unrestrictedly) culture we have culture some aspects of it can be found in other continents( this is due to the fact that we share certain similarities due to being from the same ancestor) while others are exclusive to Africans alone. Some of these are from the culture of Africans; communalism, fables, food, clothing, language and poetry.

We all know Africans were not left the choice to learn, speak and write in their own native language and that is why English and French ( the language of our colonial masters ) is the most people have at their disposal to achieve the great things Reno talked about in the world scene.

All these talks about neocolonialism , inferiority complex etc I no dey join mouth put. I no get strength for those things at all.

The inferiority complex I mentioned doesn't apply to Wole Soyinka because he always promotes the indigenous Yoruba culture in his works, criticizes the foreign imported religions that stiffle the development of our local cultures and languages.

And he's forced to write in English because it's the language of our colonial masters and one of the most popular languages in the world.

To people like Wole Soyinka, English is an important language, but is not the best language in the world.

For a Yoruba person, Yoruba language is the best language in the world. It's only inferiority complex and/or mental slavery that will make a Yoruba person feel otherwise.

after the nonsense you said about Venezuela, why would i waste my time on you, i'm dumb for wanting the world to be better for all cheesy cheesy
Let me remind you of all the nonsense you typed yesterday cheesy cheesy.

1) Saying Nordic countries practice socialism. That's when I know you are dumb.

2) Clamoring for socialism when all the countries that have practiced it all failed. That's the height of stupidity cheesy cheesy

3) Saying Utopia is possible. That only exists in the mind of a fool.

4) Everything you said yesterday was actually trash. That's me putting it mildly grin grin

My good friend. I know you're big on this African culture stuff. Your hatred for the religious encroachment of Islam and Christianity into Africa extends to your disdain of our own acculturation of the white man and his ideals.

But you need to let go of the past and look into the future. What is really the need for us to espouse our tribes?? Really look into that question.

Let me assume that you're yoruba. I'm Igbo.
What is the practical use of your language over mine?? Is it not this English language that is connecting both of us??
Does you being Yoruba add any special value over me being igbo.? All these affiliations are purely sentimental.

No need to brood over it. There is truly nothing wrong with our cultures dying. They have no practical use. Me being an Igbo man living, having a cultural identity as an Igbo man when I live in Maryland Lagos is useless.
I am Igbo in all but name.
You may think that espousing the English language means espousing the white man but that's not true.

The British that taught us the language don't even have an autonomy over the language again.

The English language has become the default language of the world. That's why it has even had variations of it. IE, American English, Australian English, pidgin English, Jamaican English {rastafarian} . Etc.

There is no use fighting change, we just have to succumb to it. The language is the ultimate unifier.
We are communicating in English because it is practical to do so. If I called onye nsokwu. You won't understand me. If you spoke Yoruba, I won't understand you. Our unifier is the English language.
I'm not saying we adopt the English CULTURE, even though most of us criticizing me here do it gleefully {white wedding}. grin
I'm just saying we embrace the language.

grin grin I do love that, don't I??
That's what you get for calling me mentally enslaved when that is what word is loaded.

I would like any Igbo man here to tell me when last he revered amadioha, or went to an ofala or new yam festival. Or believes in the supremacy of our kings on the village as our highest political authority. Or officially taught their children the Igbo language.
Our culture is dead. Nothing to chestbeat
Can you remind me again why you criticize Christianity and Islam because here you're stating the local cultures and languages are dead (even though they're not) and clamoring for English to become the universal language?

You might as well start clamoring for Christianity to become the universal religion since most Igbos don't revere Amadioha or Chukwu, who they call Yahweh or Allah ignorantly. These posts reek of utter confusion.

No one is actually mocking him, majority find it hard to comprehend to his posts, he's the one making a big deal out of it.
I even advised him to type in French we will use Google translate.

I don’t really know much of ur personal history with him on here , but I’ve actually seen posts on this thread making mockery of how he writes .

In all honesty when I read some of his posts for a second I will be lost , but then I usually end up making sense of what he says . Yesterday when he confirmed he speaks French more than he speaks/writes English it was all clear to me .

I think he finds the fact that u tell him to write in French offensive ; more like u trying to mock him.(maybe that’s not ur intention but I think that’s how he sees it )
