I don't think Nihilist should count Bakayoko's 'Bag of beans'-like assists i his quest for Canvas. That would be double standard, what says you?

Why not?

That's the entire point of the bet - That Bakayoko can easily replicate the grocery bag's feats.

Just because your father flogged you for touching his cable TV in the 1990s does not mean all our fathers are deeper life sadists. Some of our fathers actually encouraged our passion and would watch matches with us. My 2nd ever memory of watching football was sitting down with my pops to watch Italia 90 bronze match between Italy and England and him telling me Peter Shilton is his agemate. We did not have cable then so it must have been on local TV.

Those who want to watch football in the 1990s will find way to watch it. I even watched 1995 and 1996 UCL final in boarding house. Don't ask me how. 1994 World Cup, my father bought cable especially for that tournament. I can't remember how long his subscription lasted, he probably stopped subscription within few months but I know I watched 1994 World Cup on Canal + with French commentary. I watched every single match, even had logbook of yellow cards and red cards, and my pops would even let me stay awake till 2am to watch those matches, sometimes watching with me. As for Euro 1996, I watched as many matches as possible in Shell Camp, Port Harcourt.

My first memory was Canada 87 final vs USSR, My mom wanted me to go sleep because it was late at night na popsie say make dem leave me. I am sure they all regretted it because na cry I cry till morning after USSR beat us on penalties and referee robbed us.

Nations cup I didnt miss any from Maroc 88, FA cup of the days of John Fashanu Wimbledon and Bruce Grobbelaar Liverpool, Then Serie A, Then football made in Germany was popular in Lagos then that was when I started supporting Bayern but as with youths of those days I still supported Ajax because of the Naija connection.

Abeg sey no be U17 world cup dem kanu, babayoro brothers ,oruma n co break out from. After which he joined Ajax where he had finidi as a team mate, then left after 1995 for inter Milan?

Yes oh. That was my first tournament when I had my senses. I think I missed the first match, I did not know tournament was going on, but when I heard score was 8-0, I was like kilode, I have to watch this. Then we hammered Argentina 4-0 next. Soon it was obvious that we would flog every team we faced except those Addo brothers from Ghana that were giving us heart-attack. Oruma was the star of that tournament, followed by Kanu. We had Babayaro brother and Pascal Ojigwe as well. The only disappointment was one wasteman striker we had called Peter Anosike. Everybody was scoring hatfuls and the guy no gree score despite being the number 9. I think he scored in the final though.

LOL not too many lagos boys here

90s cable in Lagos was CableTel.

They first came with Free to Air Cable around maybe 93/94. It was free for like a year, then they scrambled it so that you would see the number of their company to pay for subscription.

Then Mnet came in I think 95/96. That was when they had some funny channels like KTV, BOBTV, Mnet, Canal+ 1-6 or so. Mnet advert was on TV all the time. Before my dad bought it, I used to prank call their office everyday because though we had Nitel landline, but I had no one to call cos none of my friends had landline at home.

My dad would only pay Mnet subscription during holidays, so during school term it was dungeon master, then cadburys breakfast TV on a staurday, followed by frank spencer, and then Mitchell Obi's boring show till 2pm. Then I think NBA show all afternoon. I didn't even like sports those days, but my brothers were watching so I would just sit there and listen while playing gameboy

So if I tell these young ones of how my elder cousin and I used to sneak to the car to unhook car battery to power the TV for Chile 87 which was in the middle of the night in Naija they will say I googled it.
Or how they had to beg me to go to school after Brazil pummeled us 4-0?
Or how LTV 8 showed Fa cup final between Liverpool and Wimbledon in the 80s cos Fashanu was playing?
Or how ref robbed us in Canada 87?

So because you don't know nobody else can know? Continue, you are doing yourself not me. Lol

Algeria 1990 was my first match I watched, when they flogged us 5-1.

I always hit the playground in 1989 to hear stories of the 89 abi 91 tournament though. They would be singing:

"We play Russia, we beat Russia.
We play USA, we beat USA
We play Portugal, Portugal give us 2-nought. Aroma stylee, styleee. Isawonaroma, Romaaa"

Japan 93 na early morning dem dey play those games. Na from like quarters I begin watch. I think that was the tournament FIFA experimented with kick-in instead of throwin.
Those Naija bros just dey take Beckham style deliveries for Oruma to nod.

Ghana brought a lot of the Australia 93 players to Japan 93. That Ghanaian team of Australia 93 was good, they beat us in the qualifiers at Mauritius 93.

Lol that was from ras kimono's song Rhumba style.
It was 89 saudi.
Quarter final against Russia was miracle of damman. Never forget momsie was pounding yam that day.
Semi final was USA . 2 goals by headmaster mutiu adepoju I believe.
But d Portuguese were too sound and mature in the final.

I remeber the Chile 87 sef. First game Brazil brush us 4-0 wey Alcindo scored the first goal, even Williams come score another free kick. Our best chance was when Etim Esin hit the post, I remember Adeolu Adekola and Wily Okpara wey dey leak all the goals, I think Ndubuisi Okosieme was there though I am not sure.

Our 2-0 loss to Italy I think it was at 2am I couldnt stay awake for that.

By 1988 I don dey sabi more Maroc 88 Okwaraji with the afro was my hero then. Our game vs Cameroun in the groups, Camerun was better but we managed a draw though Cameroun press us like bobby that day. Final we were the underdogs but deserved to win but the ref robbed us, ruled out a legit Henry Nwosu goal

Seoul 88, was very early in the morning, I tried to sneak a transistor radio to school to follow commentary but the teacher seized it and reported to my dad

If you wan know more about 80s football ask elampiro and naptu2

Na Saudi 89, First game vs Saudi we won 2-1, I remember some pigeons were coming on the field and I said na jazz wey Saudi people wan use be that. But Ohenhen freekick and Mutiu Adepoju won it for us

Our game vs Czechoslovakia was where Chris Nwosu dribbled like 4 players to score. Quarter final Damman miracle, by the time we were 3-0 down NEPA took light na so I bone carry my own ball begin play set for outside na so someone say game don reach 4-3 and dem bring light

we come win via marathon penalty. We had 2 keepers Angus Ikeji and Emeka Amadi. Na Emeka Amadi come keep for the penalty

Semi we played USA one of the US players was named Lagos. Final vs Portugal, IBB gave us public holiday and Portugal beat us well.

That was the generaion that became Portugals golden generation Pinto, Couto
