raumdeuter: I remember that France 1998 vs Denmark game very well, he did that rainbow flick that skill he tried to pass in between 2 defenders running the ball between his legs. I think one key limitations to his game play is the fact that most of his dribbles/skills are not forward moving ones. His skills gives time for opposition players to regroup. Even dem Adama Traore dey do forward moving skills pass am sef 2 Likes |

How is Rufai missing on the list for most of you? I think he was decent during the peak periods of the Super Eagles. He manned our goal during important periods like the 94/98 World Cup, won the Nations cup, lost a final, was steady and committed to the uniform. I mean, I have nothing against Enyeama but I would have Rufai over him. |
Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by Ibime(m): 12:44am On Apr 12, 2020 |
Roland17: Guy Rufai was dead in 1998 WC. He was too old but they had to bring him back because Shorunmu got injured and Abiodun Baruwa disgraced himself in a 5-1 friendly defeat to Serbia prior to the tournament. That's why the guy stood leaden footed for that cheap Hierro freekick vs Spain. Even the Raul rebound, the guy fùck up. Even watching 94 World Cup back, that guy dived like snail for that Baggio goal. If not for Abacha getting us suspended from 1996 and 98, Ike Shorunmu would have a good claim, but Enyeama is head and shoulders above both It's not everybody that played in 1994 that must make all time 11. I was surprised to see PDPGuy adding that useless Eguavoen to Super Eagles 11. Eguavoen that threw away the game against Italy. Even go watch the Argentina game, the foolish Eguavoen was sleeping, taking a break while Maradona took quick free kick pass to Cannigia right where Eguavoen was standing, and Cannigia scored. Even the Zola red card, Eguavoen stüpidly fouled him in the area after sleeping again, but was lucky the ref didn't blow for penalty, causing Zola to kick him. For the actual penalty, Eguavoen was sleeping again, as they lifted ball over his head. He didn't move, then rushed the attacker last minute. I think Adepoju had already covered the attacker but the foolish Eguavoen barrelled into the back of him regardless, not checking that his teammate had already blocked the attacker. 5 Likes |

Ibime: PDPguy did not watch USA94 and some younger people because they didnt watch these guys tend to overrate them Eguavoen was a total disaster everytime he played, He was the weakest link in our defence. You already spoke enough about USA 94 fuckups of Eguavoen, See as he collided with Masaro for the Italian penalty in extra time. There was one France 1998 qualifier vs Guinea in Lagos Bonfere was trying to implement 3-5-2 and we were stuggling, Amokachi scored 2 goals did some smart 1-2 to score Eguavoen who was already on a yellow removed his shirt to celebrate someone else goal and got a red card.. Na that day I give up on am totally That was how Guinea gingered and Titi Camara dribbled our entire defence to score a beauty, that day it ended 2-1 but na heart attack ending because of Eguavoen foolishness Eguavoen na one of those jack of all trades, played midfield played defence out of pity they just parked him into one of the less risky positions on the field(right back) Nigeria was hoping Mobi Oparaku will rise up and take over the Number 2 shirt but that one sef, Raul just use his destiny shine vs Spain, Last last na Mutiu Adepoju(another jack of all trade) had to cover at right back for us 4 Likes |

Ibime: Good points you make.. As you said Eguavoen made dumb decisions at that World Cup. But Yobo barely shined for the SE in matches against non-African teams. I’ll give him credit for that assist for Aghahowa against Sweden though. That was top-class cross |
Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by Ibime(m): 1:17am On Apr 12, 2020 |
raumdeuter: I even thought of Adepoju in my 11 sef cos that guy never let us down whether playing midfield, wings or right-back. He was just unlucky not to cement a starting spot in the great tournaments of 1994. I always felt more comfortable when Adepoju partnered Oliseh than Okocha. That was how Okocha was messing up in 2000 AFCON QF against Senegal till Aghahowa rescued us from nowhere. Our midfield was being overrun all tournament. Next match, semi against South Africa, Okocha was suspended and Adepoju stepped in, our midfield gained shape again and we had our most impressive game blasting them away 2-0 with a very solid midfield. Final match against Cameroon, they brought Okocha back and our midfield was gangbanged the whole game. We constantly looked like a boxer on the ropes as Foe and Olembe just ran through. Oliseh was working alone, but because Okocha scored freekick, that's all they would remember. 6 Likes |

raumdeuter: And can you imagine, Eguavoen physically attacked Westerhoff in the dressing room after that Italy game, shouting that Westehoff had sold the game. . . even after he had just cost Nigeria the game. I remember reading that story in Complete Sport then, which is why Jo Bonfreres interview yesterday did not come as a surprise. 1 Like |

Ibime: That's true, but Okocha scored a sizzler to bring us back into that match. Okocha to me, was one of our top 3 performers, in France 98. Etim Esin would be in my team, if i don't have Okocha. |
Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by Ibime(m): 1:49am On Apr 12, 2020 |
airmark: That's because you like dribblers. Who be Etim Esin? He has never travelled to a senior men's tournament for Nigeria. Oruma was a more archetypal European style central midfielder who was fantastic in possession footie, and robust in midfield but injuries and Okocha blocked his progress. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by raumdeuter: 1:50am On Apr 12, 2020 |
Ibime: You know your football. Okocha is a liability in midfield because the other partner will overwork, The only way to play Okocha was to kill one wing and play Garba Lawal who would help in marking in midfield. Vs Denmark Oliseh come dey work like monkey dey chase Laudrup all over while Okocha was just doing triple stepover moves. The game frustrated all our players Taribo was almost crying on the field when Ebbe Sand use head dribble am before he come useless Rufai Or if we play 2 wingers like in Atlanta, we will have to play without a real striker and use Kanu and Amokachi to help in midfield while Kanu Ghosts as false 9 That final match because we played a Real 9(Chukwu Ndukwe) we needed more from the midfield but Okocha was doing his own thing on the left wing. Cameroon wey no send us, They no care about dribbling As dem see say Okocha no dey trackback or help, dem just ganged up on our left side. if you see wetin Lauren(still get dreadlocks) and Geremi use Celestine eye see for that game. I was shocked he made it alive 8 Likes |

Ibime: Rufai na reputation he take stay for Eagles that long Baruwa was supposed to be our keeper but vs Yugolavia he attempted to dribbled Mijatovic, lost the ball and we lost 3-0 (e be like say jazz catch am) Ike Shorunmu break shoulder vs Germany. Dosu already broke his spine in an accident earlier That was how we ended with Rufai. Rufai was shitty throughout France 98, vs Spain see Hierro freekick wey he escort enter net, even 3rd match vs Paaguay, I even think say dem pay Rufai money so we can eliminate Spain ni Until I see how Rufai dey drop ball for rebound vs Denmark Abeg Rufai sef na soap for that France 98 2 Likes |

Ibime: I was genuinely hoping Oruma will take over the number 10 jersey from Okocha or James Obiorah, But after 1 game Nigerian fans will start clamouring for Okocha to come to entertain with dribbles Oruma balled in French league for Nantes and Sochaux I think while Obiorah dey represent CSKA for CL 1 Like |

raumdeuter: James Obiorah was another dribbler, but he played Kanu position. I was expecting that guy to blow in Eagles but Kanu parapo kept him out. The guy really shined in Ecuador 95, but we sent a shitty team to that tournament and got knocked out by Qatar. Oruma would have been perfect for our midfield but he struggled with injuries throughout the 1990s. The guy played like Paul Scholes. He was a top man at Marseille even till he was old, going near on 2010. The same parapo Kanu and co played on Obiorah was the same parapo Okocha played on Oruma. These guys parapo was so strong, they can ask coach to take Ogbeche to World Cup and drop Aiyegbeni 3 Likes |
