They are u just stingy. they hardly call. they claim they dont have time, they feel they are above the world and most of them still live in poverty washing plate from one restuarant to the other. i am sorry to insult some pple but i am not impressed by them or should i say my friends over there. they feel everybody needs their money.i have deleted some of them from my phone.even when u call them sometimes they dont pick the cal cos they are afraid. they are not the only once abroad, calls are cheaper but they still dont even call, Pple in other countries dont do that. i know most Pple in UK wont accept but i think its true. U guys cant do anything to it. i 1 Like |

oh!!! my waist don break with laughter . well, there are better things to do than to wait for someone else call abi? i just think it is easy to forget friends when you are not together or in different place. you got your life where you are now, you busy with school, busy with your relationship, new friends, job, multi tasking etc so it might not be because they are tight fisted. instead of waiting for their calls, why not go ahead and make new friends. hold on to the memories but don't limit yourselves with friendship or stuck your tent with one that is thousands of miles away 3 Likes |

dejia: what a contradiction, how do yu expect people in poverty to get the money for call cards. i bet those yur friends wud be glad yu stop calling them cos yu dont sound like a true friend here, have yu ever took time to find out what kind of situation they might be going thru, those assuring words from yu, like everything is going to be fine if they dont get discourage might be the only word they needed at that particular time. wake up and smell the coffee yur friends are in a strange and foreign land busy to make themselves a better person, so go get yurself a life fela. omoge: true word , darling |

nigerian calls are annoying. they ring and hang up, then expect you to call back. When you call back, they tell you they want to find out how you are doing. And when you ask them wetin dey happen, they say "you no as 9ja dey before you commot now". Shortly, the will ask for pounds; anything for the pocket. frankly brother, it's annoying. i have tried to explain to friends, but none of them would understand. when i let them know i pay a huge amount as tuition in the uni, they say "na school we go chop?" pounds is difficult to earn, and easy to spend. the bills are astronomical. house rent are calculated per week. i pay 70 pounds per week for a very small room. i pay for internet, telephone (mobile and house), television, travel etc. part of my tuition (9,000 pounds) was paid by my civil servant parents, yet every day friends call and hang up, expecting me to ring back. who told you that calls are cheap here? TALK-DIRECT (a phone card) costs 5 pounds and when you use it to call nigerian mobile number, it lasts you less than 200 minutes. most people don't even want you to drop the phone once you call them, they want you to talk to their fathers, mothers, uncles, girl friends, maids and even bingo. i used to pick up all those calls and ring back, but when i started receiving "flash calls" from more than 20 different people on a daily basis, i stopped picking up nigerian calls. they don't ring for more than 2 seconds, and they expect you to ring back immediately, notwithstanding that you might be in school, at work or in church. you can afford to make a call to the uk from nigerian with your mobile. nobody can try it in the uk, else the week's pay will go to your network provider. people also find it difficult here. here is not heaven. Elgaxton, i promise you you will do the same when you come over here. any way, i intend to return to 9ja after mit studera. 2 Likes |

Na wao, some folks back home are very unreasonable with their demands. Expecting their friend abroad to call and chat with their parents, maids, siblings is too demanding. I sometimes think that sending money home encourages laziness. Look at this, others with no external help are surviving, so why would others solely depend on their relatives, who are striving to make ends meet abroad for their survival? Housing abroad is no joke at all. You pay a lot of money to secure a decent accomodation, that at the end of it all, you wonder if it is worth it. I mean, why pay this colossal amount of money in America, when your family house is lying idly in Nigeria. A former classmate of mine told me that a 'friend' of mine told him that he stopped communicating with me, because our friendship was not benefitting him financially!. Like I was supposed to be his meal ticket in Nigeria. Unbelievable! |

Hmmmmm! how do i start, I posted this thread becos I made a comparison b/w the friends i have in USA and the ones in Uk and damn! The ones in UK are very interesting as in there mentality, mind me i dont beg pple for money never, all i just want is return my calls(it makes me feel like a fool when i do all the calling and there's no single call return Habba), @ Jockey! those who know me very well will testify 2 u, I'm not a Fair weather kinda friend, I make sure I call any friend of mine who travels abroad( at least by the first week of his/her travel) just to know how he person is doing, I don't believe in begging so note that in mind when u're posting to this thread. 2 Likes |

Ndipe! First of all, Y would u travel abroad to make ends meet, I'm not one of the folks u're talking about. Wether u're abroad or not u should learn to keep in touch, Nigerians dont beg anymore xcept the poor in mind So far be it from ur mind that I'm begging, I just dont understand their mentality towards money once they get there. |
Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by davou4eva(m): 11:14am On Jul 03, 2007 |
Anyway, from my own perspective it all depends on the level of r/ship and understanding btw u and u friends over there, some of my friends in UK do call me very often and likewise i do thesame from Nig. and me calling them is not to ask them for pounds or whatever but just to give the friendship running and whenever they see anyone coming they try send one or two things to me even without asking them. And i also have some that after hey left nigeria they call for some times and stop calling but i try call them but when i saw that they are not calling me again i also stop calling them so that they will not feel too important or that their are strings that are attached. We understand that the situation over there is not also that easy but i still believe that no mattter what the diff. is still clear, anyway i wish them all luck. |

@Siena Cant u just read posts before your own, I said i don't need anybody's assistance abroad, can't u get it I'm just sayin that there is this mentality that eats them up once they get abroad and that is: " Money is hard here o" It is the wrong mentality! That will not make any person wether in Nigeria or Abroad a millionaire! 1 Like

funny how the people that are complaining are actually in Nigeria. be easy, peeps. the only way you can understand why people do that is when you come over yourself and see how hectic things are. when you have a million responsibilties taking up your time, bills to pay, errands to run, where will you find time to respond to someone that can't take the time to call you and is instead flashing you. how inconsiderate. besides, do pounds fall from trees? what do you do when all your people call you for is money, money, money! the times when you literally were starving when broke with no relative to turn to, they weren't there o. yet, they believe that because you're abroad, then automatically, you must be making a lot of dough. hiss! 2 Likes |

soul, thank you ojare Elgaxton: if you didn't ask for money, i am sure they won't say that money is hard o. maybe they are damned too tired of constant demand from others that when a call comes in they suspect it's money issue. why then call just to say hello and have the person ask for pounds or dollars? so you know what you might have done to make them not return your call. the tone of your email (even though you said you called just to say hello) seems like you were asking for money. it will be hard for u to be honest to readers here but bear in mind, people abroad know the tactics (sp) lol so relax and again, make new friends and forget those abroad they just too busy okay if they call or write you, fine. if they don't, just bear in mind that they are just too busy with life oversea, work, family, new friends etc. also, if there is mentality, it is the mentality that people back home have that once you are oversea, you get money. Yes, there is money but bills sure take am. even air is paid for oversea . no well to draw water, so you pay for water cheers my brother |

abi o my sister. very frustrating when you work your ass off only to spend it all on bills. make i break am down small in naija at least u fit tamper with meter or u fit bribe NEPA, but iro, here if u no pay ur electric bill "kpem", no light for u. na u and ur flashlight/candle go dey chill together. there's also utilities - hot water (which y'all think is a luxury o), telephone, cell phone, cable bills (local channels suck big time, no be just in naija). then there's taxes on every friggin thing u buy here. the government is watching ur ass, if you dont pay ur taxes, ur ass goes to jail for income tax evasion (shuo, na my country? ) i no dey pay taxes for my country, why i gots to pay for here? haba. ok even water get taxes too. lol medical insurance - God help you if you aint got any. the bills will even make ur condition worse. ordinary to see doctor, if no be free clinic, you don enter gbese, extra high tuition fees (you fit build 5 houses in naija with their tuition fees o), car insurance - if you like dodge and no pay am, e go catch up with u one day i'm not trying to give excuses here, but just for people at home to have an idea that it aint cool to ask for money o . we self just dey manage to get by. |
Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by Ollie39: 8:33pm On Jul 03, 2007 |
Not everyone in the UK is stingy. If they are it is hard to see why as calls are very cheap. For a call card costing only two pounds and fifty pence you can spend up to 180 minutes on a call to Nigeria. It is definitly cheaper to call from there than vice versa so I always called. |

You must pay tax. . .A friend of mine after serious hardwork Got paid like over 900 pounds after tax was deducted the bro was left with 635pounds. Imagine! and there are still so many bills yet to be paid. |
Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by Segesexy: 8:51pm On Jul 03, 2007 |
I'm very sure most of you guys in Naija still live at home with your folks and the only bill you pay is to your cell phone (Recharge Card) and sometimes maybe money for "okada" to move about, and the thing wey dey pain me most is that these guys wont even give you the chance to go get a call card or even to enter PIN number from the card,Dem go don flash you a million times, Its very easy to sit on your lazy butts back home to flash your so called friends in London to call you straight back because them no get work, abi?, Thank God most of my friends understands the koko of the matter, If you think your friends in London aint worth it then " FI LE " , Perhaps you wanna try guys in America or else where. |
Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by samsilo(m): 8:58pm On Jul 03, 2007 |
@Elgaxton there was a topic on this forum a while back about friends in Nigeria always ask for money.I said it then and repeat it now,you may not do it but most folks get pestered for money from home. Life in this country is so organised and people plan thier spending such that sudden demands for money do not fit into most peoples plans. Imagine this, forget that your cleaner talk!If you are a professional and your income was as follows. you earn + £3000 a month , minus -£700 Tax and National insurance -£700 Mortgage -£350 Car hire puchase payment -£200 cable, electricity, water ,telephone -£150 council tax. =£900 That means you are left with a salary like that of a cleaner. Knowing that these guys know how to make sure you work for every pound you earn do you think this fellow with the above income after feeding and clothing himself and his family will want to hear all those stories. I was on a bus one day and one woman went mad because her uncle asked her to send him 1 million naira to manage life. Not minding that every one could hear she blasted the man telling him partly in yoruba and english how she was struglling as a carer, building a house in niaja and paying her kids fees in expensive schools in Lagos. In short make you dey careful my friend |

Re: Nigerians In The UK Are So Stingy by adeboo(f): 9:10pm On Jul 03, 2007 |
I dont think its the case of being stingy they are just abit money careful. Most of them put a calculation on whatever money they are about to spend - the worst ones are the ones thathave just arrived in the UK. They usually convert money to naira before they spend it and that makes them money cautious. 1 Like |
