Celebrities and their Alter Egos

t is now common trend for most celebrities to adopt the use of an alter ego as a second self. An alter ego (Latin, “the other I”) is a second self, which is believed to be distinct from a person’s normal or original personality. A person who has an alter ego is said to lead a double life. Politics / Youths And Political Thuggery In Nigeria by Abisoyee(m): 4:19pm On May 11, 2013
YOUTHS AND POLITICAL THUGGERY IN NIGERIA

Politics in Nigeria has been rightly called a ‘do or die affair.’ The political atmosphere in the country has been one of tension and violence as various vices operate. The politicians will use any means to get into power and this is usually made manifest during election periods when various forms of election malpractices is the order of the day. There is the election rigging, stealing of ballot boxes, intimidation and threats to opponents, assault, assassination, harassment, maiming and killing. This trend is not phenomenon of recency: thuggery, brutality and violent political behaviour have been with us since independence.

Immediately after independence, the politicians in order to retain political seats with their regions went into various acts that were both politically unwise and immature. They adopted a style that was an impediment to democracy and good governance. They recruited, trained and empowered thugs to harass, intimidate and victimize perceived political opponents those opposing views against their political ambition. This culture of thuggery has since then stayed with us, from independence till date.

It is an established fact that the Nigerian politics is characterized by violence and since thuggery is defined by as act of violence or behaviour by ruffians, it is therefore safe to say that thuggery in Nigerian politics is a means to an end. There is no limit to the number of thugs that a politician can surround himself with. What is however unfortunate in this trend is that the politicians make use of youths that are supposed to serve as future leaders for their questionable activities. They use these young ones for political intimidation, harassment and even assassination of political opponents.

For instance, in 2003 and 2007 respectively, the general elections that took place were characterized by the use of political thugs to fight and win the elections nationwide. For example, the hitherto non-violent south-south geopolitical zone of the country witnessed an unprecedented build up of armed youths; recruited and trained by local politicians to win elections through the use of violence and physical intimidation of rival parties. This phenomenon coupled with already existing decades-long youth’s agitation for justice and equity especially in the Niger Delta oil bearing region metamorphosed into a vibrant youth’s militancy in the region. Another instance is the last general elections of 2011, many people lost their lives and in some cases private and public properties were wantonly destroyed. Political thugs created, trained and sustained by politicians became the potent agents of intimidation and destruction used by the political parties and desperate politicians in the do or die battles to win primary and general elections at all costs and by all means necessary.

The multi-billion naira question is who are these political thugs? The simple answer to this very expensive question is that they come from homes of Nigeria’s underprivileged class – the downtrodden masses that generation after generation of Nigerian elite leadership created since independence from the British colonial rule in 1960. They are the school drop outs, the unemployed youths (the jobless college and university graduates) who will bend to the will and whims of power-hungry politicians in exchange for some naira notes, the stark illiterates who have never gone to school, miscreants, ruffians, street boys (area boys) and other unsavoury characters are usually the targets of these politicians. Some of them are placed on regular salaries, with allowances accompanying their remunerations. Some are employed as special advisers, special assistants and personal assistants while those who do not fit in for the aforementioned positions are made contractors to the government. Still some are paid off immediately after the usual assignment.

During campaigns, they use them to instil a sense of fear into political opponents and even during elections, they cause hitches. They can be used to hijack ballot boxes, election rigging, they intimidate voters and create such an unhealthy political environment that most times, voters and officials are unable to come out to exercise their franchise to vote and be voted for. These thugs are also used to ‘silence’ political opponents and aspirants or members of society that are perceived to be too vocal in their actions and condemnation of some of the activities of these politicians.

The menace of political thuggery in Nigeria has to be checked in order for us to have a more sustainable democracy that will really be a government of the people, for the people and by the people. So that we can live in a nation where leaders are no longer imposed on us because of the activities of political thugs and their nefarious activities. People can be able to exercise their franchise right without fear of intimidation and harassment. They can feel that their votes really count in choosing their leaders and the political atmosphere can be one of healthy rivalry and competition thereby allowing for the promotion of good governance in the country. Concrete and implementable programmes and policies should be formulated of putting a stop to nurturing and breeding of political thugs and gangsters by desperate and unscrupulous politicians.

Education / Gender Imbalance In Education by Abisoyee(m): 3:24pm On May 11, 2013
GENDER IMBALANCE IN EDUCATION

The huge lapses in the education system of Nigeria is fast becoming an issue of major concern especially when it comes to the matter of the girl child education. It is alarming to note that in a society such as ours where education is considered important, the female child can still be denied the fundamental human right to education.

This practice is found basically in all the tribes of the nation where the male child is considered to be of more value than a female child. The girl child is neglected in almost all aspects coming from both respect and dignity. She is considered as inferior and not up to equal standard to her female counterpart in society. Perhaps it is only George Orwell’s saying coming to play when he said in his book ‘Animal Farm’ that some all animals are created equal but some are more equal than the other. The Yoruba kindred for example believe that a Yoruba girl will get married and bear her husband’s name thereby adding no value to her father’s lineage; therefore training the girl is considered to be a precious waste of time and resources. The Hausa-Fulani also are of the school of thought that women should be submissive to their husbands and therefore should not be trained to be more knowledgeable than their husbands. It is however ironic that the Quran which is the Holy Book of Islam (the dominant religion in the North) allows both women and men the right to a good education but most families concentrate on boys rather than girls.

Another factor affecting the girl-child education is poverty; a family with limited resources will rather train the male child than the female child. Some of them are asked to drop out of school to get married or to look for work. They are encouraged to marry rich, older men so that they can contribute to the welfare of their family. Some are told to look for work like selling or hawking in order to cater for the needs of the family. Since the role of the woman has been stereotyped into being a helper to man, the belief is that she should pull her weight in taking care of the family.

The government on its part has been trying to curb this trend of neglect to the girl child. The influence of some western culture has been able to positively affect the mission of eradicating the girl-child discrimination. Since the mid-1980s, some state governments in northern Nigeria began offering free education for girls up through secondary school. In other states, it was made an offence not to educate the girl—child. More girls have been able to receive good and qualitative education than in times past.

The problem of the gender imbalance in education cannot be solved until we change our orientation and attitude about the role of women in the society. We have to look for ways in making sure that more of our girls are allowed to stay in school to receive proper education as this will better our chances in national development. We have examples of great women who have achieved feats and surpassed expectations that man has put on them. Education is vital to the development of our nation and we need to make sure that everybody is giving equal and fair chance of receiving good and qualitative education.

[quote]TONTO DIKEH: ROLE MODEL OR NUISANCE?

If you haven’t heard of the name Tonto Dikeh in the Nigerian entertainment industry then you are so 2000 and late. Tonto Dikeh is one name that has penetrated every household in Nigeria. Literature / A Quarter Too Late by Abisoyee(m): 2:59pm On May 11, 2013
I dragged my feet to the dining table slowly, I knew what was about to come. It was dad’s quarterly appraisal of what we have been doing in the year. Dad has this habit of making all of us gather round every three months to talk about our dreams and ambitions for the next three months and also ruminate on whether we have been able to achieve the goals of the last quarter.

I was dreading this particular meeting because I know I have been lazy this new year. I haven’t been up to date with my work and I was more concerned with frivolities than hard work. I shuddered at the thought of what dad will think of me if I told him that I had not been able to achieve one single goal that I set in the last quarter of 2012. I can still remember that day vividly; sitting down with my family and telling them excitedly how I was going to make sure that I took more writing more seriously and get some serious writing done. How I was going to try and push start a career in presenting and above all, how I was going to take my fallen grade from Upper Credit back to the Distinction that everyone had been so proud of.

Although examinations have not yet started so my Distinction goal was still in view, I know deep within me that I will have to work damn hard to make the grade with the level of lackadaisical attitude have been showing to my work. The writing on the other hand had just been me being lazy as usual. That kick that I used to get in putting pen down to paper was slowly fading because I could hardly think of topics that interest me. And even when I do get one, I write with such a dispassionate interest and doubt in my own abilities that it sometimes scare me.

Everybody was already seated and I slid into the chair next to my brother, Kunle because it was the farthest that I could get away from dad. As was the usual routine, the meeting took off with dad’s opening speech and then handing over to the eldest to tell everybody what he has been doing the last three months and what his plans are for the next quarter. This meeting was particularly important because it was the first for the year 2013 and so meant that we have to have some good things to talk about. My two brothers took their turns to talk but it was all just a droning in my ear. I wasn’t paying any attention; I was still too busy trying to come up with the perfect thing to say. I was thrown out of my reverie when dad cleared his throat and I realized everybody was staring at me.

It was my turn to speak and I still hadn’t come up with anything yet. I cleared my throat and adjusted in my seat nervously. Then as if by some divine inspiration, I started speaking. I talked about the challenges that I have had to face running two programmes and still trying to maintain a social life that was up to date. I talked about my insecurities as a writer, those moments when I want to write so badly and I cannot for the life of me know anything to write. The times when I just want break down because of the stress and how nobody seemed to understand how badly I was trying to keep a balance. That I believed had been my achievement for the past quarter. Although I wasn’t where I envisioned myself three months back, I was making my way there albeit slowly.

The rough gets tough, the times get hard but they do not always seem to last forever. It takes only one push, that little strength or iota of determination to take that extra one step, to keep going. It wasn’t a quarter too late after all, it was just a quarter slow and one that needs a lot of self confidence and motivation to keep going.
