Politics / Kidnappers Abduct Businessman In Amuwo Odofin, Lay Siege To FESTAC by aboy247: 12:03pm On Jan 30, 2016
Gunmen numbering five Thursday night, abducted business mogul, Francis Umeh , in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos. Kidnapping has become common in the area especially FESTAC.

As at 2pm yesterday, Saturday Vanguard gathered that the abductors were yet to make contact with family members of the abducted man.

The abduction as reliably gathered , occurred barely two weeks after another business man, Cosmos Ojukwu was abducted in Festac Town , in same local government.

Information at Saturday Vanguard disposal had it that Umeh, an auto parts dealer at Aspanda , Trade fair, along Mile Two-Badagry express-way , was returning home when the unexpected happened.

The gun wielding men said to have been clad in military camouflage reportedly intercepted Umeh’s vehicle in front of Mobile filling station opposite his house.

They were said to have ordered him out of his car , threatening to shoot him dead if he acted otherwise. Thereafter, they dragged him into their operational vehicle and zoomed off to an unknown destination, shooting sporadically.

Saturday Vanguard learned that Umeh’s wife reported the incident at the Area ‘E’ command when news of her husband’s abduction reached her.
Another businessman kidnapped

Umeh’s abduction occurred two weeks after Ojukwu was kidnapped in Festac Town. It was gathered that Ojukwu’s abductors demanded for $2m ransom , out of which members of his family , through the contribution of friends and relatives reportedly paid $1m after much plea.

But as at yesterday, it was gathered that Ojukwu’s abductors were yet to release him as they insisted that additional $1 be paid.

Family sources hinted that “ We had to borrow to pay one million dollars. Rather than release him, they demanded of additional one million dollars. They said that the additional payment was because we were rude to them. We have been begging them to release our bread winner to us. We have gone round but nobody is willing to raise money again, as everyone is complaining of financial hardship”.

It would be recalled that Chairman of Comestar Manufacturing Company , Sir James Uzochukwu Uduji was kidnapped by gunmen at 7th Avenue in Festac town, after which they demanded $1 million for his release, last September.

His family as gathered raised N100 million but his abductors insisted on the demanded ransom. Unconfirmed report had it that N220 million equivalent of one million dollars was eventually paid before he was released.

Also in Amuwo Odofin, wife of a senior journalist was abducted in her home last year . She was said to have been released after an unspecified amount was paid as ransom.

Again, family members of another business man also kidnapped last year were compelled to pay N110 million for the release of their breadwinner. Information had it that a cartel in the area was responsible for the kidnaps and it was disappointing that the police had not swung into action, compelling residents not only to lose confidence in them but also to allege complicity.

The worrisome development has sent fear down the spines of residents of the area as Vanguard gathered that some of them are complementing relocating.

When Saturday Vanguard visited the area ‘E’ command yesterday, the area commander was said to have left the office for the command. Some policemen who spoke on condition of anonymity hinted that Umeh’s kidnap was not reflected in the Police crime diary. It was also discovered that some of the kidnap cases were never reported at the station, following strict adherence to the kidnappers directive to the affected families.

Politics / New Electricity Tariffs Kicks Off Nationwide On Monday by aboy247: 12:48pm On Jan 29, 2016
The implementation of the new nationwide electricity tariffs approved by the federal government for electricity consumers, will begin on Monday, February 1.

Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Anthony Akah, has said the new tariffs will enable the power distribution, generation and transmission companies to acquire the necessary infrastructure.

Akah revealed this on Thursday, when he led senior executives of the regulatory agency on a courtesy call on the National Orientation Agency in Abuja.

The NERC boss said there’s no going back on the new tariffs while adding that the lack of cost-reflective tariffs had hindered the electricity companies from acquiring the necessary infrastructure to provide optimum service to consumers.

Akah said after the new tariffs have been implemented, the power companies will no longer have any excuse for not delivering on agreements they entered into with the government.

Under the Multi-Year Tariff Order, Akah said all premises must be metered and consumers who subscribe to specific metering models must be supplied meters within 60 days after which they would not be disconnected or charged on estimation if a meter was not supplied.

Furthermore, he added that a Power Consumer Assistance Fund had been set up to cater for the electricity needs of the less-privileged in the country.

Politics / Obasanjo Blasts Senators In Letter To The Senate by aboy247: 4:57pm On Jan 27, 2016
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has sent a letter to the leadership of the National Assembly.

According to The Cable, the letter dated January 13, 2016 addressed to Senate President Bukola Saraki and House Speaker Yakubu Dogara bashed the lawmakers for being ‘insensitive’ as they planned to buy cars for themselves despite the economic crunch in the country.

The ex-president also said the lawmakers in the National Assembly, have over the years, promoted a culture of financial misconduct.

Obasanjo said: “The recent issue of cars for legislators would fall into the same category. Whatever name it is disguised as, it is unnecessary and insensitive. A pool of a few cars for each Chamber will suffice for any Committee Chairman or members for any specific duty. The waste that has gone into cars, furniture, housing renovation in the past was mind-boggling and these were veritable sources of waste and corruption. That was why they were abolished. Bringing them back is inimical to the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.”

He also slammed the legislators for not following the emoluments fixed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) which he considers as a breach of the consitution.

“By our Constitution, the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission is charged with the responsibility of fixing emoluments of the three arms of government: executive, legislature and judiciary. The Commission did its job but by different disingenuous ways and devices, the legislature had overturned the recommendation of the Commission and hiked up for themselves that which they are unwilling to spelt out in detail, though they would want to defend it by force of arm if necessary. What is that?”

Obasanjo also challenged the lawmakers to embrace openess and accountability by publishing their recurrent expenditure and opening their books to an external auditor from 1999 till date.

“The National Assembly should have the courage to publish its recurrent budgets for the years 2000, 2005, 20 10 and 2015. That is what transparency demands. With the number of legislators not changing, comparison can be made. Comparisons in emoluments can also be made with countries like Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and even Malaysia and Indonesia who are richer and more developed than we are,” Obasanjo wrote.

Science/Technology / ABU Develops Prototype Refinery by aboy247: 9:09pm On Jan 26, 2016
The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna state, has developed a prototype refinery with a capacity of refining one barrel of crude oil per day.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing newsmen at the main Campus in Samaru, Zaria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the briefing was part of series of activities toward the 38th Convocation Ceremony slated for Saturday, Jan. 30.

“This is a prototype refinery that runs on one barrel a day. It is a very long term project, we started it then Raw Materials Development Council came in to support.

“The project being built in stages, so far we can produce petrol (PMS) and diesel. We need more support from potential supporters and investors to take it to the next level,” said the vice chancellor.

He said the university had signed an agreement with Kaduna Refinery and Petrol Chemical Company (KRPC) on supply of crude oil but they were yet to fulfil their obligation.

Garba said the institution had repositioned itself to address some of the national challenges through research and development in its postgraduate school.

He identified inadequate accommodation as one of the pressing challenges facing the institution with more than 40,000 student population apart from lack of fund.

The vice chancellor called for public-private partnership to address the accommodation problem. He recalled that the Mechanical Engineering Department had recently designed and produced a car called ABU Car.

Garba said Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the Chairman and Chief Executive, Dangote Group, was expected to deliver a pre-convocation lecture on Friday evening, while Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II , would chair the occasion.

Politics / Tinubu Reveals How To Boost Nigeria’s Economy by aboy247: 5:10pm On Jan 26, 2016
The National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, says Nigerians need to be creative and innovative to develop the economy.

He told newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday that the diversification of the nation’s economy was always on the drawing board but had never been implemented.

“We keep talking about diversification of the economy. It is always in the drawing board. We never implemented it.

“There are so many ways to create and revitalise this economy; it is not as bad into the future as people make it appear.

“The past is nauseating, terrible. There has never been any principle of good governance in the past. It has been cesspool of corruption,” he said.

The former Lagos State governor said that Nigerians needed to support and encourage the present administration in its campaign against insurgency and kidnap.

“We face the challenge. We accept the need for the diversification of the nation’s economy. “ There are a lot of variables in the oil sector which we have to look at critically.

“We are not the only country that is affected by the effect of this oil crisis. We have to be more creative in a way that will not hurt the welfare of the people,” he said.

“We need to look inwardly. There are so many ways and we are blessed to really create local demand, improve our disposable income and manage our own economy.

“We have the resources, people and the blessing of both weather and mineral resources but it will take time.

“There is a gestation, rearrangement and reengineering necessary for the economy to be beneficial to the people.

“We must be patient, we must persevere and the leadership must be creative in order to rejuvenate the economy. Just bear with us,” he added.

Speaking on the influx of defectors into the APC, he said that there was the freedom principle which allow citizens to associate with any organisation or political party they want.

Tinubu said that the builders of APC must be tolerant and understand the need to check intrusion of corruption and injustice into the party.

“You can’t stop that. You cannot discriminate against that. There is nothing we can do about that. “We cannot prevent people from coming in, the more the merrier, the better, the competitiveness,” he said.

Politics / Tenant Removes Neighbour’s 7-month Pregnancy With Kitchen Knife [PHOTO] by aboy247: 4:49pm On Jan 24, 2016
A mother of two, Mrs. Oyinyechi Chinaka, is recuperating after she was reportedly stabbed several times by her neighbour (names withheld) in Mushin area of Lagos.

Mrs Chinaka was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, but she lost her seven months pregnancy.

The victim’s agony began after she allegedly caught the neighbour stealing money from her purse and, not wanting the woman to expose him at number 11, Anjorin Street, Mushin, Lagos, the suspect was said to have stabbed Mrs. Chinaka with a kitchen knife severally on her stomach ,arm and neck and left her to bleed to death .

The mother of two could have died but for the timely intervention of neighbours who went looking for her and called for help after they saw her lying in her room in a pool of blood.

While neighbours were at a loss about what happened to her, the assailant went about as if nothing happened until he was found out by his elder brother and he confessed to stabbing Mrs. Chinaka .

The victim, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard on her hospital bed, narrated, “ I was at home that fateful day when my children came to me in the kitchen where I was cooking to say electricity had been restored, and that I should come to the living room to play a cartoon video, called Power Ranger, for them. I left what I was doing and went to operate the television for them. But to my astonishment, I saw the neighbour in my room. He was going through my purse to steal money. I caught him red handed. He was shocked .I said, ‘ So, you are the one stealing all the money that has been missing in this compound’. I was shocked because I trusted him and we had never quarrelled before. I usually left my children with him and he entered my house the way he liked, but for him to be stealing was shocking to me. As I was still talking to him, he ran out of the room and before I knew what was happening, he came back with a kitchen knife and told me that he will stab me with it. I thought he was joking but to my shock, he moved close and, as I attempted to escape, he held me and started stabbing me with the knife . He stabbed me until I lost consciousness. I did not know what happened next. I only found myself in hospital and, after surgery, I was revived. My husband told me that I was stabbed and would have died but for God’s mercy. I could not feel my baby anymore. I was seven months pregnant but my baby was not kicking”.

Mr. Henry , Mrs Chinaka’s brother- in-law, explained the trouble the family went through to get medical help for her.

“ When we heard that she was stabbed, the family rallied round and rushed her to LUTH. Doctors told us that she had to use the only ICU machine but a lot of people were on queue to use it. We ran helter skelter to look for money to deposit for her treatment. We had to deposit N500,000 and we have spent more than a million naira on her treatment but nobody knew who stabbed her and she was on life support machine for months . Unknown to us, the assailant’s elder brother had reported him to the police at the Olosan Police Station and the police had charged him to court for attempted murder without carrying out thorough investigation nor did they visit the woman in the hospital” , Henry said. “ We have been prevailing on the police to include the case of murder in the charge against the assailant because the woman lost her seven months old pregnancy due to the stabbing. The baby is in the mortuary but the DPO of the Olosan Police Station and the IPO are not ready to cooperate with us as they went on to charge the boy to court without hearing from the family of the victim. We are appealing to the police to revisit the case and amend the charge to include murder. We want justice to be done.”

A human rights activist, Mr. Ishola Agbodemu, urged the police to get justice for the victim, especially in the light of the lost pregnancy.

“If she had not been stabbed and made to go through such a terrible experience, she would have given birth to a child by now. The child’s murder should not be overlooked by the police”, Agbodemu said.

In his statement to the police, the suspect said he was pushed by an evil spirit to stab Mrs. Chinaka.

“I went to her house to steal money. She caught me but a spirit told me to stab her, so I went to the kitchen and took the knife and stabbed her with it. I stabbed her because I did not want her to reveal to other neighbours that I am a thief. I fled the house when I saw blood gushing out. It was my brother who exposed me. He saw a cut wound on my hand and he questioned me where I got it. I had to confess to him that I used knife to stab Mrs Chinaka. My elder brother took me to the Olosan police station and I was arrested”.

Politics / PDP To Osun State Governor; Sell Helicopter To Pay Workers by aboy247: 9:45pm On Jun 07, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party has advised Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the Osun State Governor, to sell the helicopter purchased for security surveillance and stop “wasteful spending” in order to raise money to pay salaries of workers in the state. Mr. Diran Odeyemi, the Director of Media and Strategy of the PDP in Osun State, gave this advice in a statement in Osogbo on Sunday. The PDP said, there is need for Governor Aregbesola to borrow a leaf from Muhammadu Buhari who travels on British Airways, even when aircraft in Presidential fleet are available.

The governor has however described the suggestions and allegations from the opposition party as infantile. According to a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, Aregbesola said the PDP was just seeking cheap publicity with their suggestions and spurious allegations.

Politics / Apc Crack Deepens: Saraki Faction Aligns With Pdp For Senate Presidency by aboy247: 1:21pm On Jun 07, 2015
Following the emergence of Senator-elect Ahmed Lawan as the All Progressives Congress sole candidate for the position of Senate Presidency, senators- elect and APC party members loyal to Bukola Saraki have denounced the process that led to Lawan’s emergence and decided to align themselves with other opposition party senators-elect of the soon to be inaugurated senate in order to grab the senate presidency. This action is a direct affront to the APC party leaders who midwifed the emergence of Lawan. It also rubbishes the notion of party supremacy being touted by APC.

According to a press release dated 6th June by the Saraki faction otherwise known as Senators-Elect of Like Minds, there will be “… a joint press conference by the 65 Senators-Elect of Like Minds drawn from across party lines on Monday morning, the 8th of June 2015.” As events continue to unfold, it is likely that the next senate president will be determined by which APC faction the opposition PDP senators-elect support.

Politics / Another Bomb Blast Hits Maiduguri; Making One Bomb Attack Per Day Since May 29th by aboy247: 8:10am On Jun 07, 2015
Another explosion suspected to be detonated by Boko Haram terrorists on Saturday rocked the usually crowded cattle market, popularly known as Kasuwan-Shanu in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, witnesses and security sources have said. Sources close to the site said, although the sound of the explosion did not resonate through the town as it occurred amidst thunderstorm that accompanied a heavy rainfall in the capital city, many people, especially traders are feared dead.

A Vigilante source, Abba confirmed the incident, but said he could not give details of the casualties recorded. A soldier who doesn't want to be named also confirmed the bomb blast. Yesterday's blast brings to five in the sequence of attacks since the first that rocked Maiduguri on May 30, 2015.

Politics / CRACK In APC: Party Picks Lawan As Sole Candidate For Senate Presidency.... by aboy247: 7:55am On Jun 07, 2015
Senator Ahmed Lawan and Senator George Akume were on Saturday announced as sole candidates for the position of President and Deputy Senate President of the 8th Senate respectively, by the All Progressives Congress. This followed a primary election conducted by the leadership of the party in which out of 33 Senators accredited, Lawan got 32 votes while one vote was declared invalid. Akume also polled 32 out of 33 votes.

Lawan while delivering his acceptance speech said although he was grateful for the confidence reposed in him by the party and his colleagues, it saddens his heart that his colleagues “in the other camp” boycotted the primary. He pleaded for the assistance of the NWC to win over all other senators in the National Assembly not only because their support is needed to win on Tuesday, but to effectively lead the Senate.

Politics / Buhari, Osinbajo To Make Assets Declaration Public After... by aboy247: 7:45am On Jun 07, 2015
The Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, yesterday disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will make their assets declaration public after verification by the Code of Conduct Bureau. Nigerians have continued to react to the president's decision not to make public his assets declaration as promised during his campaign.

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) had last week said, it lacked the powers to make public the assets of the two leaders. A statement released by Garba in Abuja yesterday, hoped that verification by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) would be completed before the expiry of the 100-day deadline within which they said they would do that.

Politics / REVEALED! The Real Reason Jonthan Lost - PDP Leaders by aboy247: 9:13pm On May 04, 2015
Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said President Goodluck Jonathan lost the recent presidential election to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari because the PDP campaign was filled with hate campaign against Buhari with little emphasis on the achievement of Mr. Jonathan.

According to Olisah Metuh, the party's spokesperson, the party headquarters was left out during the campaigns, and that “overzealous” persons were made to run a hate campaign against Mr. Buari, thereby making him more popular. Metuh said some of the most horrific attack against Mr. Buhari came from the president's wife, Patience, the governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, and the spokesperson for Mr. Jonathan’s campaign team, Femi Fani-Kayode.

One of the thousands of hate campaign banners and posters released by the Jonathan Campaign team to smear Buhari's image

Sports / Floyd Mayweather Beats Manny Pacquiao In The Fight Of The Century by aboy247: 10:29am On May 03, 2015
Following an unanimous decision by the judges, Floyd Mayweather Jr. beat Manny Pacquiao in the much anticipated fight of the century. The judges scored the fight 118-110, 116-112, 116-112. The consensus in the boxing world is that it was the correct decision. But many Pro-Manny supporters think the decision was unfair. In the early rounds, Pacquiao was by far more aggressive and thrilled the heavily pro-Manny crowd in the middle rounds with a few left hands to Mayweather's jaw.

However, Mayweather's legendary defense didn't give Manny a chance to do any heavy damage. Mayweather simply just remained Mayweather. While Pacquiao threw a ton of punches, he could never get inside on Floyd, and most of his flurries amounted to nothing. At one point Floyd, who remains undefeated at 48-0, even taunted Manny's punching power after a flurry.

“According to residents, the soldiers arrived and opened fire on innocent people, burning houses. It is not clear why soldiers would open fire on the people they are supposed to defend.

“Sources said it is in retaliation for the killings of their colleagues. Others denied this, more so when two of the four soldiers allegedly killed were even Tarohs from this area. Villagers would rather believe it is a deliberate plan by the outgoing governor to intimidate the people of the area, following the overwhelming votes from the area that changed the results of the last election.”

Spokesman for the Special Task Force, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, while reacting to the allegation last night, said there was no truth in the claim that its members attacked anybody.

He said the operation was meant to check gunmen, who had been terrorising residents and security personnel in the area.

According to him, following frequent attacks on communities around the Plateau-Taraba border by some militiamen, the STF and soldiers from the 3 Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army, had been carrying out operations targeted at flushing out the militiamen.

He argued that soldiers, who were working to protect innocent civilians, could not turn around to kill the same civilians.
