Sports / I Want To Win Copa America 2019 For Messi - Aguero by ackim: 9:59am On Jun 21, 2019
Sergio Aguero admits to being “more anxious to be a champion for Lionel Messi than for me”, with Argentina preparing to go in search of the Copa America crown.

Expectations around the Albiceleste have been played down heading into a major continental tournament on Brazilian soil.

Lionel Scaloni’s side is on the back of a disappointing World Cup in 2018, considered to still be a work in progress.

They can, however, call upon the mercurial talents of Barcelona superstar Messi, and that gives them a chance every time they take to the field.

A five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still waiting on a first senior international title with his country, having previously suffered final heartache at three Copas and the 2014 World Cup.

Manchester City striker Aguero is desperate to bring that barren run to a close, telling Fox Sports Argentina: “I'm more anxious to be a champion for Messi than for me.

“Hopefully one day it happens.

“It's his dream and everyone's dream. I put myself in his place and I want to try to do my best for him to lift the Copa America.

“It's been a long time that he comes here and he suffers. I also suffer.

“We know what he can bring and the rest have to be mentally prepared not to fail.”

Messi has taken in 129 appearances for Argentina, recording 65 goals.

He has tasted U20 World Cup glory, back in 2005, and landed an Olympic gold medal in 2008, but is still waiting on an elusive title with a star-studded first team.

His next quest is due to get underway on June 15, when the Albiceleste take on Colombia.

Aguero is likely to line up alongside him, with the 31-year-old having enjoyed another productive domestic campaign in 2018-19 as he netted 32 times for City and helped them to a historic treble in England.

He has shown no sign of slowing down but admits that he doubted his participation at the Copa America at one stage when Scaloni opted to overlook him.

“When I wasn't being called up I had doubts if I would be there or not,” Aguero added.

“Leo called me in April to tell me I would be called.

“I was very happy, I don't know if it will be the last tournament. We want to win something with the national team.

“We know there's a lot of pressure on Argentina. The smallest mistake and you are eliminated because it's a short tournament.

“You cannot afford to have a bad match, I'll try to do the same as I do with City.”

After facing Colombia, Argentina will then take part in further Group B clashes with Paraguay and Qatar.

Sports / I Am Not Leaving Arsenal - Aubameyang Assures Gunners by ackim: 9:16pm On Jun 19, 2019
Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has assured that he would not be leaving the Emirates this summer, the UK Mirror reports.

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is understood to be looking at the Gabon striker as a potential replacement for Inter Milan-bound Romelu Lukaku.

Defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final sparked speculations that Aubameyang, who netted 32 goals in all competitions last season, could be open to a move away.

However, the 30-year-old wants to continue emulating his boyhood hero, Thierry Henry, by wearing the no.14 shirt for the Gunners.

“I loved my time at Dortmund but when Arsenal called, I was really excited for the challenge.

“I’d always admired Arsenal because of the big history and players like Thierry Henry. He was always an example for strikers and because I am also fast and score goals, I always looked up to him.

“He’s the reason why I took the No 14 shirt. To be honest, when I arrived I actually wanted No.7, but Micki [Henryk Mkhitaryan] had already taken it.

“So I thought, ‘Why not follow in the footsteps of a legend?’ I’m just really proud to wear the 14 shirt and I hope to honour it,” he said.

Aubameyang was signed in January 2018 for a club-record £56million, eclipsing the £46.5m paid for his strike partner, Alexandre Lacazette, seven months earlier.

Sports / Super Eagles Of Nigeria Drop Three Spots In Latest FIFA Rankings by ackim: 10:56pm On Jun 14, 2019
The Super Eagles are one of the African teams to drop very low in the recent release by Fifa

Nigeria dropped three places to 45th spot in the latest global rankings released by the International Federation of Association Football (Fifa).

Friday’s announcement came as a blow to the Super Eagles who moved up four places in the previous standings back in April.

During the period in review, Gernot Rohr’s men were involved in a friendly match against Zimbabwe as part of their preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) but it ended in a goalless draw in Asaba.

Nigeria join Guinea, DR Congo, Lesotho and Seychelles as the African teams with the biggest drop in ranks in the standings.

Despite the global difference, they remain the third best team in Africa behind first-placed Senegal [22] and Tunisia [25] in second.

Morocco [47], DR Congo [49], Ghana [50], Cameroon [51], Egypt [58], Burkina Faso [59] and Mali [62] make up the other top 10 teams in the continent.

Nigeria will be aiming for greater heights in the next Fifa ranking scheduled for July 25 with their performances at the Africa Cup of Nations will be included.

The three-time African champions have been placed in Group B of the tournament with Guinea, Burundi and Madagascar.

Sports / Conte Forced Me Out Of Chelsea In 2017 - Mikel by ackim: 7:25pm On Jun 14, 2019
Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel has revealed that he advised his former teammate, Victor Moses not to honour an invitation to be part of Nigeria’s squad to the 2016 Olympic Games.

Mikel also revealed that it was former Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte who forced him out of the club in January 2017.

Mikel told Super Eagles Media team that ”When that opportunity came up – either to go to Rio Olympics or play for Chelsea – I decided to tell Victor Moses because I was older, he’s young, he hasn’t played yet for the club. I told him I’ll go and he stays back.

”If I lose my place it’s fine, Victor stayed and I went. I came back, the manager never spoke to me again, didn’t put me in the team and I said okay fine, I’ll leave.

”The commitment and love that I have for my country will never change until I stop playing.

Right now it will be difficult to find young players who will be able to do that for the national team because the agents make money from the clubs.”

The former Chelsea star is the only player to represent the country at U17, U20 and senior World Cups, Olympic Games and Confederations Cup.

Sports / Cristiano Ronaldo's Volley Against Man United Awarded UCL Goal Of The Season by ackim: 12:01pm On Jun 04, 2019
Cristiano Ronaldo's spectacular volley against Manchester United in the group stages of the Champions League has been voted as the goal of the tournament.

A list of the top 10 goals was compiled by a group of 'technical observers' days after Liverpool lifted the trophy in Madrid.

The group of technical observers featured the likes of former Manchester United manager David Moyes, current England boss Gareth Southgate, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez and Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez.

They concluded that Ronaldo's superb volley was better than Lionel Messi's free-kick against Liverpool and Sadio Mane's chipped effort against Bayern Munich, with those strikes ending up in second and third respectively.

Ronaldo has won the award for a second year in a row after his bicycle kick against Juventus for Real Madrid got the nod for the best goal of the tournament last season.

Barcelona players were responsible for five of the goals, with Luis Suarez, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic joining Messi in the top 10.

Sports / Chamberlain Dedicates Liverpool’s Champions League Win To Arsenal by ackim: 1:21pm On Jun 03, 2019
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has dedicated Liverpool’s Champions League triumph to Arsenal.

Midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain was an unused substitute as the Reds recorded a 2-0 victory over Tottenham – with Mo Salah and Divock Origi bagging the all important goals.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled for game time this season after a cruciate knee injury kept him sidelined until April.

The England ace joined the Reds from Arsenal in a £35million switch two summers ago.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made 198 appearances for the Gunners, netting 20 times, having spent six seasons at the Emirates.

In an interview with former Gunners teammate Per Mertesacker, Oxlade-Chamberlain said: “As former Gooners we know what that meant to all the Arsenal fans out there.

“I had a personal feeling in that game that we needed to get it done for all the people I left at Arsenal.

“I know they were all willing us on to win that one. I’m happy that we could do it.”

Sports / Chelsea Goalkeeper Retires From Football After Europa Win by ackim: 4:39pm On Jun 01, 2019
Chelsea goalkeeper has retired after the Europa Cup win against Arsenal on Wednesday, according to report.

Rob Green released a statement that confirms he would be hanging up his gloves after two-decades of professional football.

Green did not play any part in Chelsea games this season but he was a popular figure in the dressing room and will no doubt be missed by his team-mates.

He wants to continue with the game but in a coaching capacity but whether or not that is with Chelsea remains to be seen.

While the former England international became something of a jovial figure when he joined Chelsea from Huddersfield, he has proven his worth in the dressing room as an experienced head.

The squad celebrated with him after the 4-2 win against Arsenal in Europa league finals on Wednesday shows the way he was revered among the Chelsea stars.

Jay-Jay Okocha, who is often described as being “so good they named him twice”, faced two charges in the closed-doors hearing.

The famous sportsman was seen at court wearing white trainers with smart black trousers, a white shirt and suit jacket on top of a puffer jacket.

He faces one charge in relation to alleged acquisition, use and possession of criminal property, and another relating to allegedly concealing, disguising, converting and transferring criminal property. It is understood the appearance relates to incidents alleged to have happened in the north-east in 2015.

Okocha, who also netted 14 times for Nigeria in 73 appearances and starred in the country’s 1994 World Cup campaign, made no plea during the hearing.

The retired footballer, of Milton Keynes, was granted bail. The case against him was continued for further examination. No date has yet been fixed for his next court appearance.

Okocha moved from Fenerbahce in Turkey to Paris Saint-Germain in 1998 for a transfer fee of €12.4 million.

The attacking midfielder also played for Hull City in the English Championship before retiring from the sport after the 2008-09 season.
