I was a little disappointed. I was expecting a more technical explanation.

It seems like you are using Elliott waves or some variation of it. Can I say elliott waves invariably predicted the COVID outbreak. This is because if the wave hints at a major correction, something in the world bends to fulfill its prophecy.

I think Elliott waves should be banned. They work a lot like voodoo. embarassed

Lolllll this advice is to your newbies ooo not for the rugged man on the broad Street.

You don’t sound like you’re anti stock market, you’re just anti Nigerian stock market which is fine tbh.

You’re not disputing the facts being presented(such as fundamentals, profits), you’re just anti NAIJA market regardless of how much profits these companies are making.

The funniest thing was when someone asked when you’ll know when foreigners are in the market. Your response cracked me up.

The people you’re arguing with have been in the market for long, they have been through many cycles of foreigners coming and going and they’re still here.

It’s fine if you're waiting for the daily 10% up before investing, some of us got in early and we are ok with however long it takes. We will be collecting nice dividends while we are waiting.

Just thinking out loud, all long term investors gather here, in the last three short years we have survived Covid, Ukraine War, Bank runs, and Recession fears(still ongoing) etc.

Through it all, we held strong and continued to buy! I am not saying the coast is clear yet, but it will be hard to match these last three years. Maybe World War 3 is still loading? In any case, we are still standing and holding strong. Lets give ourselves high fives, it wasn't easy!

Going forward, it is probably not going to get easier, however, we need to keep our eyes on the prize!

Respectfully, you're missing the forest for the trees.

I'm not sure why you're intentionally sidestepping the devaluation impairment. That is the elephant in the room.

3x surge in exchange rate in Nigeria that wipes off your capital's nominal value vs 30% extricated from dividends (you keep 70%) while your capital maintains its value and appreciates against the naira. It's a no-brainer. Buy a Eurobond, Municipal Bond, or a non-US domiciled ETF and you're exempt from the WHT.

The dollar camp will thin out if the naira held its value or experienced a marginal loss. Proponents will change their jerseys before you blink.

In fact, FPIs will return in droves. We'll all collectively be falling all over ourselves to buy the banks, palm oil, and other high yield dividend stocks and sleep with both eyes closed. There'd be sustained perennial capital appreciation of A-list coys as well.

Unfortunately, that is not the reality and a lot of people are not optimistic about how the next 10, 20, 30 years will shake out.

I repeat, devaluation is the primary reason for the interest in dollar-denominated securities. When the rate stabilizes for an extended period, very few people will chase single-digit yields in the US when CPs and stocks in Nigeria offer double digit yields. The math will be very different then.

You cannot be jumping out of NSE stocks when their quarterly results stink but point fingers at those looking to preserve their capital in $ securities when the naira rate is dropping like a rock. That's a shocking lack of self-awareness.

I don't care about the color of my money. I only care about what it can get me.

-Lord

Ummm lemme get this straight, I raised the issue of crazy fees and taxes, you accused me of spreading fake news. In your quest to insult and prove me wrong, you proved me right! All I did was point it out to you lol. But now, it was never about the Fees and Taxes??

Maybe you don't have plans to ever wear a Brioni. Or stay at an Aman. Or buy La Mer for your wife. Or fund your kids/grandkids down payment or tuition in part or in full. Or comfortably pay for world-class medical care when you're frail.

You see all those bolded things? I have no idea what any of that is and I honestly don't care lol,

Based on the name, I am guessing Aman is some expensive hotel in Dubai? I have no plans to ever go to Dubai lol

Thank goodness my wife does not know what La Mer is grin grin grin

As for my kids, I expect scholarships lol.

God willing, if I stay alive until I frail, my portfolio will be large enough to take care of that.

Good luck with your dollar dollar though, I hope everything works out for all of us

I have access to Google.

That claim you made is untrue. I asked for a source to be polite. Maybe there's something I missed or you're a lawyer or tax accountant.

Foreigners (nonresident aliens) do not pay capital gains or ordinary income tax on stock sales in the US. However, there's a 30% withholding tax (higher than our 10%) on dividends. PTP securities have a different tax regime, but they're a minority of assets.

So next time anyone asks for proof, provide it. Quickly drop a link since it's so easily verifiable.

I've done that breakdown and I'm nowhere near 15%. Which is why, again, I asked for clarification.

I'll use Trove as an example. Buy/Sell trading fee is 1%. Deposit fee with card is 1.5%. Tesla does not pay dividends so there's no WHT. How are you forking over 15%?

I highlighted tashere units because if you're depositing $50 and paying $30 in flat wire transfer fee, that's obviously not ideal. But at >$1000, that $30 is now <3%.

I engage to learn here. We would not have a dollar debate if the exchange rates did not triple in the last 10 years.

Of course, past performance is not a guarantee of future performance. The exchange rate was pretty stable between 2002 and 2012. So we may very well enter another stable decade. No one knows for sure.

Nonetheless, the $ remains an effective hedge for anyone concerned about maintaining their purchasing power in globally comparative terms.

Using the target draw of the comment that sparked this debate--N100m. That used to be $1m in 2000. In 2014, it was $500K. Today, that is less than $135K. All computed at black market rates. I wouldn't touch real estate or the S&P returns over the same time period in the U.S. Nor would I touch IRR. Nor would I touch inflation.

Maybe you don't have plans to ever wear a Brioni. Or stay at an Aman. Or buy La Mer for your wife. Or fund your kids/grandkids down payment or tuition in part or in full. Or comfortably pay for world-class medical care when you're frail.

But if the last 20 years repeats, there's the elevated risk of being naira rich and dollar poor. Not everyone wants that future. Personally, that is a nightmare.

So you do you. Let everyone make the bets and hedges they feel sure of.

Maybe there are properties in Ikoyi and Asokoro that may have kept up with devaluation over 20 years. Perhaps, the question is not one or the other, but striking a perfect balance between your foreign and national holdings at specific net worth bands. But we're not having that conversation because everyone have heels dug in with their respective teams and you're spouting incorrect information.

PS: Apologies for the derail and long text everyone.

-Lord

Tesla does not pay dividends, but this conversation was started for dividends, I only named Tesla because it is popular. But since we're still on Tesla what do you say to the $$$ people who bought at $350-$400?

Btw, before doing wire transfer, at what rate did you convert your naira to $$$?

For clarification, these are your stated fees,

1-1.5% Transaction fee
3% Wire fee
30% Taxes

Total as stated by you is 34-35%... You see that $2,000,000 I earlier stated as needed for $140k/year? May want to bump it up to $3,000,000 to account for those outrageous fees and taxes

In your previous post, you said that 200 naira could buy 4 loaves of bread, but now 495 naira can only buy 2 loaves. Are you contradicting yourself? Is inflation not the general increase in the cost of goods and services?

Na so! Adjusting and shifting the goal post to align with narrative.

Ask yourself this, If Naira investments are so terrible why do the foreigners always come and invest? All investments with strong fundamentals can make you rich imo....

Just focus on what you can control, let everything else play itself out

I'll need a source on that claim.

Also, how does the 15% in fees and exchange rate break down? It can only be that high if you're investing tashere amount with flat fee.

-Lord

Quick Google search will give you all the source you need in regards to the taxes.

As for fees, do the break down of the fees you pay to buy one share of Tesla, and then calculate the percentage based on the the price of Tesla. After doing that, also do the reverse calculation for when you eventually sell..

Majority of people screaming dollar dollar only have tashere to invest. When Ote$ was buying Transcorp he wasn't screaming dollar dollar

I never see dollar people talk about FEES and TAXES! Cumulatively you’ll lose 10-15% to FEES and exchange rates. You’ll lose another 20-35% to capital gains or ordinary income TAX as a foreigner.

These two things will limit your performance regardless of how lucky you are with your stock picking. If you have no way of minimizing taxes and fees, abeg stick to your normal Naira investments

But make una continue to dey service Uncle Sam, they love the free money.

I advise you work towards doing this in USD. Planning a retirement using Naira investments is uber risky

Here we go again with dollar dollar talk.

Anyways, to achieve $140k in annual dividends in the next 8 years, you'll need to invest at least $2,000,000 after all the multiple fees

It would actually be a 9,900% return.

Now that may seem exaggerative and possibly a bit over the line, but it is not impossible.
The growth of a firm can follow exponential pattern in an unimaginably short timeframe if and where there are "square pegs in square holes".

The said coy did deliver near 200% ROI within a space of ten days you remember?
Assume just 0.1% of that rate daily and unlock true value with a proactive and efficient magt,
and TRANSCORP might deliver even more in <4 yrs.

While I understand your drive to want to call him to order, this is subtle reminder that nothing is impossible in financial mkt.

It can go either way. (value accretion or erosion) ... everything is possible! wink cheesy cool

It is well

Bros I respect you, but like I said lets be guided! At 9,900% the market cap of Transcorp will be N1.5 trillion!

Is it possible for me to become a billionaire tomorrow? Yes, very possible, but is it probable? NO!

Just because anything is possible does not mean we should be throwing imaginary numbers around

Sir, investors have different goals and objectives. I consider myself a middle class Nigerian, with access to service that offer me free cash flow that No Government in this Nigeria can ever taxed directly.
My risk drive is driven by this heavenly grace which promotes my goals and objectives.
In order word, I based my risk on fundamental aspect of Nigeria economy.
I do not run after the performance of companies based on their quoted prices on to the exchange.
For instance, The problem of power generation would one day be solved by the private sector, this is what motivate me to acquire Transcorp.
For your information, the most potential companies that can turn N1000 to N100,000 in the next 5;years regardless of the direction of Nigeria economy is Mr TRANSCORP.
Bookmark this page.
People haven't realised that the potential in Transcorp outweigh the risk.
This is how I invest my sweat and blood.
Also, Meyer and Morison could be bought with fund/s that is not going to hurt you.
Invest and invest, set target of unit accumulations for yourself.
Start with few units, buy high and low.
I remember, about 10years ago, when I was a novince investor, I contacted a Nairalander named feelamong, I pleaded to him in an email correspondence, he recommended UCAP that was trading at sub N2.00.
I started buying and buying, and in those days, you could only buy on Morgan platform by sending email request. The Morgan platform of today was not mobile compliant then, and the lady that usually reply our mails before the advent of Yemisi, once asked me what did you see in this UCAP? there are better stocks.
Fast and forward, the then 500,000 units in UCAP is still at average cost price of N3.5.
From this I can tell you confidently that there are hidden values in all Tony Elumelu governing companies that had remain static at current prices.
In other word, UBA, Africa Prudential , Transcorp, UCAP.
I'm moderately strong in these companies.
They do not make sense to fundamental and Technical analysts.
They are always greenish in my portfolio.
My portfolio is a thing of joy 2me.
Wishing you all the very best in our uncertain Nigeria economy where boys are now men, where generational wealth are being built.

10,000% in the next 5 years? Please lets be guided when PREDICTING the future! I wonder why we did not see all these posts until recently whe Ote$ started hismanipulations.

BTW, the UCAP you used as an example only returned 450% to you and UCAP is like the only major triple+ bagger example I see on here but some how Transcorp is goin to do 10,000%.
