Politics / Policeman Killed As Gunmen Abduct Three Chinese In Nigeria by adonisNEW(m): 8:56pm On Mar 14, 2015 |
Gunmen abducted three Chinese workers after a shootout that left a police officer dead in the central part of the country, police said Saturday. "Three Chinese nationals were abducted by some unknown gunmen within the early hours of Friday," a senior police officer told AFP, requesting anonymity. He said the gunmen had stormed a quarry outside Lokoja and engaged the policemen on guard in a shootout. "One policeman was killed while another sustained gunshot wounds," he said. He said the assailants escaped with their hostages on foot through the bush, adding that police were on their trail. It was unknown whether the kidnappers were planning to demand a ransom. Kogi state has seen a wave of abductions targeting foreigners this year. Two weeks ago, two other Chinese nationals were kidnapped in the state, while an American missionary was taken from her school last month. Also read: Unidentified men abduct beer distributor in Ogun The missionary, who works in the village of Emiworo where her Free Methodist Church runs a community organisation, was released last week. State police said they were unaware of any ransom paid for her liberation. Foreign nationals have often been kidnapped in Nigeria by local gangs who typically release hostages following a ransom payment. Such abductions are especially common in the southern, oil-producing Niger Delta, where expatriates working with large oil companies have been a frequent target. A number of foreigners have also been kidnapped in the north of the country, but those attacks claimed by Boko Haram or the linked Islamist group Ansaru are considered a different phenomenon, and not necessarily motivated by a desire for ransom. A number of people seized by Nigerian Islamists have been killed by their captors, while others have died during botched rescue operations. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/Policeman-killed-as-gunmen-abduct-three-Chinese-in-Nigeria-20150314-3 |

Health / Revealed Truth About Sugar, What Kind Of Sugar To Take And Why by adonisNEW(m): 10:13pm On Mar 12, 2015 |
Time immemorial, sugar has earned a very bad name with its various connection to some diseases, however, here is what you need to know about sugar! Sugar has been linked some diseases like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and many more. However, the truth is that sugar is not only important for your body, it is also important for your life. However, it is important to understand what kind of sugar is good for you and what is not. However, there is need for you to understand ‘sugar’ itself. According to Times of India, the sugar sold in grocery stores is an unnatural substance, i.e. it is produced by industrial processes mostly from sugar cane or sugar beets. It is refined with chemicals such as sulphur dioxide, phosphoric acid, calcium hydroxide, and activated carbon, and stripped of all the natural nutrition it originally had. By refining it down to sucrose and stripping away the vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes and other beneficial nutrients, what is left is a concentrated unnatural substance that the human body is not able to handle, let alone use. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that the acclaimed ‘raw sugar’ (which most people think is natural) is also refined. Once the cane juice crystals are washed, boiled, filtered and dried. This makes the fibre and beneficial elements in the original crystals to get completely lost. The sugar then becomes refined, with no nutritional value. Needless to say, artificial sweeteners are more harmful than refined sugar. However, as highly beneficial sugar can be, it is a deadly if one gets addicted to it. This is because refined sugar stresses the pancreas, emptying the supply of chromium in the body. A common symptom of chromium deficiency is sugar cravings. Satisfying these cravings further lowers chromium and increases cravings. Refined sugar also reduces all the Vitamin B in your body. Sugar also dramatically removes calcium from your hair, bones, blood and teeth. As if that is not enough, it also affects your body’s digestion. It ferments in your stomach and stops the secretion of gastric juices, inhibiting the stomach’s ability to digest. Weight gain, mood swings and irritability are some of the major effects of too much intake of sugar. Sugar plays a major role in altering one’s mood, this explain the terminology -‘Sugar rush”. Refined sugar has a chemical reaction on the brain by releasing serotonin – the ‘feel good’ hormone; this tricks the body into a temporary high, causing a rise in blood glucose levels. This ‘feel good’ lift is followed by the crash where you feel tired, irritable and even depressed. So what kind of sugar should you take? Intrinsic sugars are natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables. These sugars are not harmful to your health nor are they fattening. Natural sugars found in honey, fruits and vegetables are unprocessed and therefore rich in fibre and nutrients. A diet high in fruits and vegetables will ensure that your body gets the small amounts of sugar it needs, while providing you with far more health benefits than refined sugar. 1 Like

Health / 7 Evidence-based Health Benefits Of Drinking Water by adonisNEW(m): 10:13am On Mar 03, 2015 |
Our bodies are around 60% water, give or take. It is commonly recommended to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day (the 8×8 rule). Although there is little science behind this specific rule, staying hydrated is important. Here are 7 evidence-based health benefits of drinking plenty of water. 1. Water Helps to Maximize Physical Performance If we do not stay hydrated, physical performance can suffer. This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat. Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. However, it is not uncommon for athletes to lose up to 6-10% of their water weight via sweat. This can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, increased fatigue and make exercise feel much more difficult, both physically and mentally. Optimal hydration has been shown to prevent this from happening, and may even reduce the oxidative stress that occurs during high intensity exercise. This is not surprising when you consider that muscle is about 80% water. So, if you exercise intensely and tend to sweat, then staying hydrated can help you perform at your absolute best. Bottom Line: Losing as little as 2% of your body’s water content can significantly impair physical performance. 2. Hydration Has a Major Effect on Energy Levels and Brain Function Your brain is strongly influenced by hydration status. Studies show that even mild dehydration (1-3% of body weight) can impair many aspects of brain function. In a study of young women, fluid loss of 1.36% after exercise impaired both mood and concentration, and increased the frequency of headaches. Another similar study, this time in young men, showed that fluid loss of 1.59% was detrimental to working memory and increased feelings of anxiety and fatigue. A 1-3% fluid loss equals about 1.5-4.5 lbs (0.5-2 kg) of body weight loss for a 150 lbs (68 kg) person. This can easily occur through normal daily activities, let alone during exercise or high heat. Many other studies, ranging from children to the elderly, have shown that mild dehydration can impair mood, memory and brain performance. Bottom Line: Mild dehydration (fluid loss of 1-3%) can impair energy levels and mood, and lead to major reductions in memory and brain performance. 3. Drinking Water May Help to Prevent and Treat Headaches Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraines in some individuals. Several studies have shown that water can relieve headaches in those who are dehydrated. However, this appears to depend on the type of headache. One study of 18 people found that water had no effect on the frequency of headaches, but did reduce the intensity and duration somewhat. Bottom Line: Drinking water can sometimes help relieve headache symptoms, especially in people who are dehydrated. 4. Drinking More Water May Help Relieve Constipation Constipation is a common problem, characterized by infrequent bowel movements and difficulty passing stool. Increasing fluid intake is often recommended as a part of the treatment protocol, and there is some evidence to back this up. Low water consumption appears to be a risk factor for constipation in both young and elderly individuals. Carbonated water shows particularly promising results for constipation relief, although the reason is not entirely understood. Bottom Line: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent and relieve constipation, especially in people who generally do not drink enough water. 5. Drinking Water May Help Treat Kidney Stones Urinary stones are painful clumps of mineral crystal that form in the urinary system. The most common form is kidney stones, which form in the kidneys. There is limited evidence that water intake can help prevent recurrence in people who have previously gotten kidney stones. Higher fluid intake increases the volume of urine passing through the kidneys, which dilutes the concentration of minerals, so they are less likely to crystallize and form clumps. Water may also help prevent the initial formation of stones, but studies are required to confirm this. Bottom Line: Increased water intake appears to decrease the risk of kidney stone formation. More research is needed in this area. 6. Water Helps Prevent Hangovers A hangover refers to the unpleasant symptoms experienced after drinking alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you lose more water than you take in. This can lead to dehydration (24, 25). Although dehydration is not the main cause of hangovers, it can cause symptoms like thirst, fatigue, headache and dry mouth. A good way to reduce hangovers is to drink a glass of water between drinks, and to have at least one big glass of water before going to bed. Bottom Line: Hangovers are partly caused by dehydration, and drinking water can help reduce some of the main symptoms of hangovers. 7. Drinking More Water Can Help With Weight Loss Drinking plenty of water can help you lose weight. This is due to the fact that water can increase satiety and boost your metabolic rate. In two studies, drinking half a liter (17 ounces) of water was shown to increase metabolism by 24-30% for up to 1.5 hours. This means that drinking 2 liters of water every day can increase your total energy expenditure by up to 96 calories per day. The timing is important too, and drinking water half an hour before meals is the most effective. It can make you feel more full, so that you eat fewer calories. In one study, dieters who drank half a liter of water before meals lost 44% more weight, over a period of 12 weeks. It is actually best to drink water cold, because then the body will use additional energy (calories) to heat the water to body temperature. 1 Like |

Politics / Kidnapped Chibok Schoolgirls Notfound In Sambisa Forest by adonisNEW(m): 1:23pm On Feb 26, 2015 |
More than one week after air bombardment and ground tactical operations commenced deep inside the dreaded Sambisa forest, the nation’s Special Forces have failed to locate the more than 200 students kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents on April 14, 2014, from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State. Military sources said Special Operations Forces, who raided parts of the forest last week soon after war planes bombarded the wooded area to neutralise the insurgents, including dozens of landmines and other bobby-traps that the terrorists used to secure the area, could not trace the missing girls and all efforts to find them in the area have been fruitless. It was gathered that the soldiers were, however, baffled by the sheer number of tunnels, open, long trenches and defensive ridges dug in the forest by the terrorists to shield them from frontal ground attacks or air raids by outside forces. The sources stated that the insurgents were really prepared for a long stay in the forest and made adequate arrangements by planting numerous land mines round the enclave to defend the place from invasion by troops, adding that aerial surveillance of the area had alerted the Armed Forces of the insurgents’ protective gear and was partly responsible for the long delay in attacking the place. Military personnel are working on the theory that the terrorists may have moved the girls out of the forest as soon as the bombardment started last week. Quoting some of the fighters captured by soldiers as saying that their leaders and their families have moved to caves in the Cameroon mountain region with some captives, the sources said the search would now shift to those areas. This is not the first time that the military has tried to locate and rescue the Chibok girls who have spent more than nine months in captivity. The first military operation to free the girls was in May 2014 and it was launched with international backing, but it failed to locate or rescue them. The operation failed even when the government signalled that it was willing to negotiate with Boko Haram to secure freedom for the girls. Boko Haram leader, Sheikh Abubakar Shekau, has repeatedly maintained that the girls will only be released in exchange for jailed insurgents. In one of his videos, he said, “I swear to almighty Allah, you will not see the girls again until you release our brothers that you have captured.” Although members of the #BringBackOurGirls led by former Education Minister, Mrs. Obiageli [Oby] Ezekwesili, have been forced to stop their daily vigil at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja, in support of the abducted girls, government officials have since rejected suggestions that the girls may have been married out to Boko Haram members or sold into slavery in north and central African countries. Coordinator of the National Security Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, believed that all the girls are alive and are still being held somewhere within the Nigerian territory. He rejected criticism that the government does not know where the girls are detained, saying, “When the Americans wanted to get their hostages in Iraq, they knew where they were and it took them 200 days. We don’t want ours to take 200 days. One thing I feel certain of is that the mystery of the missing girls will be unravelled soon.” When the case of the girls was raised with the Defence spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade, during an interview during the week, he said the military has not abandoned the effort to rescue the students. The operation, the general said, was still ongoing even as he appealed to members of the public to continue praying for the girls and the Armed Forces. Olukolade said although the military has lately concentrated more in denying the Boko Haram terrorists the freedom of action that they enjoyed previously by destroying every cell of the fanatics, wherever it may be located, the search for the girls will continue until they are located. He also said troops are increasingly gaining an upper hand in the counter-terrorism operational theatres of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, stressing that the insurgents are in disarray since the Armed Forces deployed several new equipment and weapons which encouraged better mobility of combatants and amplified the fire-power of soldiers on the battle field. “We have made serious progress in the counter- terrorism effort. In the field in the last few weeks, there have been lots of successes on the part of the military in checking the freedom of action that the terrorists have enjoyed before now. Terrorists are enemies of the society and their target is to destroy our society. This is why they should not be allowed to operate anywhere. “Their cells and enclaves are being destroyed and troops are moving to every location, any area where there is a terrorist cell will be raided. We have made some progress considering that many of them have been arrested. Many of them have died and their weapons and installations destroyed or captured in the process of ensuring that their activities are curtailed,” Olukolade stated. He said the military has succeeded in destroying terrorists’ enclaves in five communities namely, Baga, Gwoza, Sambisa, Bama and Pulka. The Director of Defence Information said the attack was carried out jointly by the Air Force and ground troops, assuring that the military operations had been very successful. [Mynewswatchtimesng] |
