Please why is that

Depending on how they sense voltage, one will always perform slightly poorer than the other. Battery voltage is a major determinant of how charge controllers work. Once two or more charge controllers are giving conflicting voltages, however slight, one or more will overestimate the state of charge of the battery and slow down.

Even the parallel configurations don't change the outcome much. I once wasted money on another Outback charge controller because I thought it will work better with the one I was then using.

All you can do is to ensure that the set voltages are the same, use same wire size and length from the controllers to the battery and stop worrying about the differences you will note, usually towards the end of the day or when your battery is full.

I strongly believe you had a 24v nominal system at this time? This would mean relatively high amps passing through the CC - any amps above the CC's clamp current rating and the battery disconnects for any reason (operator error, el cheapo breaker randomly tripping under load) the CC goes kaput immediately.

Truly the Morningstars are designed for industrial situations with heavy duty DC breakers that will not nuisance trip - someone here suggested a work around - use of a double pole breaker where you pass positive PV through one pole and positive battery through the other - if the breaker ever trips, both PV and CC disconnect together, a second breaker can be used for the actual PV disconnect.

Another way is to use a DC contactor (such as used for BMS ) with the contactor coil powered off battery voltage whereas the PV passes through the contactor's main contacts (common and Normally Open) any loss of battery immediately disconnects the PV too.

Finally I think MorningStar made firmware updates to help this problem - by now they may have upgraded their component spec to deal with such an issue.

True, I was using a 24V system at the time. Never realised that system voltage had a role to play in what was a major calamity.

I had a sad experience with the Morningstar MPPT Charge Controller. Two got destroyed in my early solar years because of battery disconnect issue. I swore for them since then. They appear to be the only one with that problem since I never had that issue with any other charge controller.

i think you have completely lost it, when we talked i told you how much you wanted to buy a MPP 8kw inverter for 450k which i already know i was going to fix because the display board was defective i had other things doing which i couldn't fix i wanted to give an mppt board as JARA and you are here ranting you must totally delusional saying what you did, ask a boy of 19 to come and cheack and you called him an installer,
must be dreaming. mind you he came to my house if i anted to scam you will i do that you must have lost something in your oblongata, even gave the poor boy money for tansport

I'm not going to get into silly name calling with you. That will be beneath me.

A boy of 19 is a man. He is a qualified installer. Maybe you think that people need to be 100 before they can become an installer. By the way, how did you know his age?

Yes, you apparently wanted to scam me. Thank God I sent someone who knew what to do.

Please deny any of these facts.

1. You advertised the inverter for sale. No indication that anything was wrong with it.

2. I dropped my number and asked you to contact me.

3. You called me to negotiate the sale. We negotiated 450k.

4. During the call and several other calls thereafter, you never mentioned that anything was wrong with the inverter.

5. You actually told me that you used it only for about a month.

6. I asked you to tell me when you will be available. You said from Tuesday.

7. On Tuesday morning, I called you to confirm if you are available. You said yes.

8. Just before the guy set out I called you to ask for the address. You gave it to me.

9. At no time during all these interactions did you mention that the inverter was not working.

10. It was only when the guy asked to test the inverter that you started telling him stories.

11. When he called to tell me, I called you back to confirm and you said you needed to replace one board and fix the display. You then asked if I wanted all these fixed and that you will not take 450k anymore, but 500k once you fixed it up.

12. Having seen that you are not reliable, I asked the guy to leave the place immediately. I was even scared you may harm him. I waited until he was on his way back to Ibadan before I shared my experience here.

Finally, I shared my experience simply to warn others who may make the same mistake I almost made. I thought that you are a honest person and you posed no threat of fraud. I was going to send my younger brother with no knowledge of inverter to come and pick it up. I suspect that you would have just packed the damaged inverter for him to bring for me.

I will refrain from responding to other needless comments you made. You clearly intended to dupe me, otherwise, you had many opportunities to come clean about the state of the inverter.

If you had intended to repair it before giving it to me, you wouldn't have allowed me to send someone from Ibadan only to start telling him stories. You wouldn't have also changed the price when you offered to repair it.

I hope that I have created enough awareness for anyone hoping to buy this or any other thing from you; they must shine their eyes.

willing to sale my MPP 8KW Inverter at clearance price

Anyone trying to buy this from this guy should be careful and do their due diligence.
I just wasted 10K trying to buy it only to realise that the inverter is not functioning and will need to be repaired.
I contacted the guy and we agreed on a price. I then sent an installer to go and test the inverter and bring it back to Ibadan for me. That is when the story changed. It was a good thing that I sent an installer who asked for a test, a different person could have brought a non-functional inverter back home for 450K.

People who are part of this fraternity need to be upfront about the condition of whatever they are selling, otherwise it will look like a scam.

I think you meant to say "cheap overhead cost". With more manufactured volumes and automated assembly and manufacturing process, the overhead expenses should come down significantly compared to a one room, one man factory like Valto's. Yet they lie to us about the capacity.

In addition, they can also get the cells at cheaper prices by virtue of their volume purchase.

If you have a load below 500w going 12v makes more economic sense...by the way kWh is not unique to lithium it's a unit that is applicable to power measurement

But, if you ever plan to grow your setup, it is better to do 48V. I started out with 24V thinking about the cost of battery. I ended up moving to 48V when I scaled up, but I was stuck with a high-end 24V inverter that I couldn't dispose at a good rate.

Thanks so much. So are hybrid inverters really the substitute for micro inverters? Trying to avoid the case where the inverter develops a fault and all systems shut down.

Inverter is often the most catastrophic failure point. Once it goes down, you are in the dark. My trick is to always have a spare inverter. About 2 months ago, I was to travel to Abuja and night before the day of my flight, my inverter packed up. A thunderstrike took out the inverter. I had to set up the spare that night or my people will have no reliable electricity till I return.

So, have a backup inverter if your system is critical to you.

Micro inverters are not common in Nigeria. Besides hybrid inverter has taken over Nigeria basically does the same converts dc to ac .

I will personally not recommend microinverters for several reasons.
1. Cost. It is likely to be more expensive as each panel will have its own inverter. If you add more panels you need to buy more microinverters.
2. You end up with more failure points.
3. It is more technically involving and I doubt that our local installers have experience with it.

Well if my years of experience of living with LA in the real world is not testing them, I wonder what is.

Anyway, as the goal here is for all of us to learn the easy way (through experience prefeably than experiments that are costly)... I am sharing another video with more "English" and more expensive LA batteries used apparently....but its still the same findings which is consistent with what we LA users live with and know.

Not as easy and simple to follow as the other video, but still points to the same thing, which if I can use Ojesky's word,"LA batteries will not perform magic" no matter how expensive.

So I still stand by the claim earlier, "you cannot get 120A from a 100AH LA for 20 mins or anything close to that in real life use".

Obviously we await your test or any other test debunking this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy3hga_P5YY&feature=youtu.be

The most important thing to take out of this needless argument is that anyone who has the means should go for Lithium from the world go. LA has unfortunately become an expensive lottery, especially with the low quality Indian and Chinese imports.

Savvy folks like you should be wary of putting out info in this manner so as not to mislead non technical people.

One could run a 120a load on a 100Ah Lithium bank or a 100Ah AGM bank no trouble - in both cases the backup time will be super short (less than 1 hour) as peukert is real for all battery chemistries.

What am I trying to say? It is impractical to use a battery this way in a residential setting as people want a battery to carry them over several hours - practically, most people will not use their battery above an average C10 discharge regardless of the type.

With the Lithium packs, we all know that there is the integrity of the connections to consider as things may get hot very fast at high C rates - yes Lithium is the superior chemistry and will last longer than similar lead acid under harsh use conditions but no one I know uses his Lithium battery pack 1C or more in a residential setting.

Bolded is not true bro. With 100A out of 100AH AGM, your voltage will sag so crazily that your inverter will shut down. One reason why people can take large amp out of even a small lithium battery is that lithium maintains a good voltage until almost the bitter grin very end. Lead acid on the other hand will lose voltage quickly as you load it.

100A out of 100AH AGM will probably last you about 5 minutes before you voltage becomes too low to sustain your inverter!

Go and Verify! grin

Hi All, please does anyone know how to handle this. My inverter reads a higher volt than the BMS/meter on the battery. This just started a couple of days ago but it has happened last year.

Can’t remember how it sorted itself out. Sometimes, the inverter volt gets so high that the inverter trips off for overloading. Meanwhile, the BMS app says it’s fine and there is no overload. Has anyone experienced this before?

The first 29.3 is the battery volt shown by the inverter. It trips off at 30. Usually when the battery is full. The second is the meter on the battery which shows 26.4 volt and what the BMS app also says.

@ojeysky
@mcfopt
@Valto
@earthrealm

Anyone with this experience please your input is needed.

An interesting situation. Use a meter to determine the true voltage of your battery. If your inverter is the one displaying wrong voltage, check the battery terminal on the inverter and be sure it is properly tightened.

If that did not work, check if your inverter has a voltage calibration menu and adjust as necessary.

If none of this works, your inverter may need repairs.

I think you have not been really reading through the thread, you pick what you like. No one is disputing lithium capacity.
If someone ask a question, na crime to ask if it is not lithium , or answer the question on lead acid . Let me ask my brother do you have 5 years on lithium use.

Actually, this question of 5 years is a fake question. You are asking knowing fully well that Lithium for solar became practicable/affordable only about 3 or so years ago, especially in Nigeria. However, if you are asking for experience with lithium batteries in general, then the answer is yes, even you are likely to have used lithium battery for more than 5 years.

At this time, lithium battery will still be at about 53V at least.

One thing people don't fully appreciate in lithium chemistry is the improved charging efficiency. Lithium charging efficiency can be as high as 95% or more compared to about 80/85% for lead acid. So, you waste less solar power to charge your lithium batteries and on poor solar days you fill your battery more quickly.

Lithium is just superior to lead acid in every way, people saying otherwise are just being purely dishonest or poorly informed.

I have never sold a single ah of lithium or lead acid battery, but I have used Gel, AGM and flooded lead acid battery and they can not be compared to lithium.
