Sports / FIFA Reveals Bizarre Reason Why Egypt’s Salah The Best Votes Didn’t Count by agfastlink: 10:00am On Sep 27, 2019
FIFA has explained why some votes for Mohamed Salah to win The Best FIFA Men’s Player award were not counted. Liverpool star Salah did not finish in the top three of the ballot, with his nominations from Egypt’s captain and coach not included. Salah appeared to be upset when FIFA’s full list of voting was released without his country’s selections. He reportedly removed a reference to Egypt from his Twitter bio and posted a cryptic message that read: “Whatever they do to try to change my love for Egypt, they will not succeed.” MORE: PSG suffer first home league defeat in over a year FIFA moved to clarify why those particular votes for Salah were not counted in a statement released to Omnisport on Thursday. The governing body said: “During the monitoring of the votes submitted by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) on August 15, it was remarked that the signatures on the voting forms were in capital letters and thus seemed not valid (not authentic). The voting forms were also not signed by the general secretary which is mandatory.” FIFA added the President’s Office of the EFA, which has undergone recent structural changes, was contacted about the issue, with no response received in time for the votes to count. Sports / Manchester United Vs Arsenal Headlines Weekly Schedule by agfastlink: 9:34pm On Sep 26, 2019
Which of these two troubled Premier League teams will enjoy the better, While Manchester United and Arsenal enjoyed differing fortunes in the Premier League last weekend, it’s clear that these two behemoths of English football are in the midst of testing periods. The excellent form the Red Devils enjoyed during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s caretaker tenure as head coach quickly dissipated once he was appointment, and the malaise of previous managers appears to have set in once again this term. Of course, there have been good results — notably the 4-0 victory over Chelsea — but United’s limitations were laid bare in defeat against West Ham United last weekend, not to mention the 1-1 draw with Rochdale in a midweek EFL Cup clash. Editors’ Picks Against the Hammers, who dispatched United 2-0, Solskjaer’s side demonstrated the disorganisation, lethargy and lack of focus as they had in last April’s 4-0 defeat by Everton, and while not quite as bad as that performance, this raised questions about whether there’s been any progress at all at Old Trafford. Certainly, this is a side in transition — they have been for years — but the arrivals of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka do not yet appear to have boosted the team’s defensive solidity, nor have the departures of various big names allowed the youngsters to blossom. Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez have departed for Internazionale, while Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling and Ander Herrera have all been allowed to depart, yet their replacements are yet to truly hint that they can step into their shoes. Scott McTominay has promise, certainly, but was outplayed alongside Nemanja Magic when up against the Hammers’ trio of Mark Noble, Declan Rice and Pablo Fornals. Similarly, Jesse Lingard has neither a goal nor an assist in 2019, while Marcus Rashford appears shorn of confidence, exhausted and the goal scoring touch that characterized his early performances with the Red Devils. No one is denying these youngsters have talent, but with a lack of quality around them, and perhaps a lack of confidence in their own abilities, they are being left to flounder. Since the victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last term, United have lost seven of their subsequent 15 matches in the Premier League, and they appear more vulnerable than ever ahead of the visit of Arsenal. However, this Gunners side have some failings of their own, as they demonstrated against newly promoted Aston Villa last weekend. Once again, the defensive limitations that had prompted such ridicule against Watford were clear as John McGinn had given Villa the lead and Ainsley Maintland-Niles had been dismissed, while the midfield of Matteo Guendouzi, Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka had offered little in the way of poise or control. However, what Arsenal have — which United do not — is a striker of the ilk and in the form of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and it was the Gabon international who bailed them out again when Villa came to the Emirates Stadium. The Central African’s late winner took his tally for the season to six in six, and there are few pure strikers in the world who can match the former Borussia Dortmund man today. Will he again prove to be the difference-maker when Unai Emery’s beleaguered troops travel to Old Trafford .While that Premier League blockbuster rounds off the weekend, the action begins on Friday in Pretoria, where Mamelodi Sundowns host Cote d’Or in the Caf Champions League. Having won the first leg 5-0 away from home, Pitso Mosimane’s side are in a strong position as they look to progress towards the group stage, and Friday’s meeting represents an opportunity for him to give some of his fringe players a run out. The first leg was an opportunity for Downs to flex their muscles and showcase the depth of their squad, and the return fixture is another chance for the domestic heavyweights to help some players return to full fitness while giving others the time they need to rediscover their sharpness. Andile Jali is one such name who could come back into the fold, while the Cote d’Or clash represents a valuable opportunity for the likes of Phakamani Mahlambi, Oupa Manyisa and Aubrey Ngoma to get some competitive minutes under their belts. Will any of these players prove that they ought to be key men moving forward under Mosimane? Finally, Madrid derby, as Atletico and Real collide in an early La Liga showdown. These two giants sit first and second in the league, with Real one of only two sides yet to lose in their first six fixtures, but they haven’t been entirely cnvincing starts to the campaign — even if any problems have paled in comparison to Barcelona’s struggles. Article continues below Atletico were defeated away at Real Sociedad, and held at home by Celta Vigo, but they’ve generally fared well as Diego Simeone looks to integrate the new faces following a summer of significant departures. Real are rebounding after last season’s misery, and while the 2-2 draw away at Villarreal and the 1-1 at home against Real Valladolid were unconvincing, there are caveats here too, notably the sluggish recovery of Eden Hazard, who’s only played 74 minutes to date. Will the Belgium superstar steadily adapting to life in Spain, expect Zinedine Zidane’s Real to continue to improve after last year’s turmoil, even if Saturday’s clash represents a stern test for a team that can still look brittle.

Manchester United face a trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the fourth-round of the Carabao Cup and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joked about how the tie fits in nicely with all the travelling they have to do at the end of October. Four days before the clash with Chelsea, United take on Serbian side FK Partizan in Belgrade and after the trip to the capital United are still on the road as they play Bournemouth at Dean Court. United almost didn’t make it past the third-round, as they needed penalties to beat League One side Rochdale, after being held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford after normal time. Mason Greenwood scored the first goal of the game, when his powerful strike from inside the box beat Rochdale’s keeper Robert Sanchez. If you want to win it then you have to beat the best However, the score was tied when Rochdale’s 16-year-old Luke Matheson volleyed the ball home with 14 minutes left in match. United dominated possession and had 31 shots at goals during the game, but struggled to find a way past Sanchez. Paul Pogba missed a clear chance to give United the lead in the first half, while unmarked in the Rochdale box, he headed the ball over from a Greenwood cross. And after the game Solskjaer said he is looking forward to facing Chelsea. Man Utd news: Solskjaer is relishing taking on Chelsea in the next round Paul Pogba missed a clear chance against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup “If you want to win it then you have to beat the best,” he said. “We played them first game of the season this year, we played them in the FA Cup last year. “It slots nicely into a couple of weeks with loads of travelling! “That’s how it is and we’ve got to make the best out of it. “I’m sure we are because that’s the type of group this is, that’s the type of club we are. “We’re not gonna say, ‘Ahh!’ – we’re going to relish it and look forward to it.” As for Chelsea, they made easy work of Grimsby Town as they beat the League Two side 7-1 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. And after the game Lampard said he was relieved to be given a home tie against the Red Devils. “It is a big draw obviously. It is two big teams. I am pleased we are at home and we will see,” Lampard said. “I think a lot can happen in football in a short time. “This next round of the draw isn’t coming around tomorrow. “We have to respect that they have good players. They beat us 4-0 albeit it wasn’t a 4-0 [on performance]. “I am not going to sit here and talk down Man United because it will be a tough game no matter what way you look at it.” The two clubs last met on the opening day of the season when United thrashed Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford but the last time they met in the League cup was back in 2012, when Chelsea beat United at 5-4 at Stamford Bridge.

Education / Plateau SUBEB Boss Decries Absence Of N-power Teachers In Schools by agfastlink: 7:09pm On Sep 23, 2019
The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has condemned the absence of teachers posted to the Federal Government’s N-power scheme to teach in public primary schools in the state.                                                                                                      A classroom with students :Prof. Mathew Sule, the Executive Chairman of the board, who made the remark while monitoring resumption of schools at Obasanjo Model School, Hwolshe, on Monday in Jos, said the teachers’ truant act was detrimental to the objective of the scheme of complementing the state government’s efforts at improving the standard of education.“This is morally wrong, where people are posted to schools and they do not attend to their responsibilities, we have no choice but to report them to the appropriate authorities.“If they cannot come to school, they should be taken to other places, we want orderliness, they must go by the school rules and create a conducive learning environment for the children,” Sule said.He alleged that some of the N-power teachers have multiple engagements, thus unable to have time for the teaching scheme, saying they were not justifying government resources given to them through the project. He, therefore, advised them to disengage from the scheme if they could not cope with its responsibilities, saying they must justify the allowances given to them as many unemployed persons were looking for such opportunities. The chairman, however, commended parents for the large turnout of pupils in the schools, saying it was evidence that they heeded to the board’s plea for the early resumption and immediate take-off of the 2019/2020 new school session. He urged the pupils to be punctual to school, be of good conduct, respect their teachers and study hard to improve on their last session’s grades.                                                                                                                            He said he would ensure that the teachers adopted the improved pedagogical skills to improve learning and enhance SUBEB’s monitoring exercises, to ensure good performance by teachers. In her response, Mrs Martha Gyang, the headteacher of the School, pledged their commitment to discharge their duties diligently and report teachers who failed in such compliance.Blessing Marcus, a Grade four pupil of the school, thanked her parents for providing her with textbooks while promising to get better grades in the new session.News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the SUBEB boss monitored school resumption in Obasanjo Model School Hwolshe compromising of Schools A, B and C in Jos South Local Government Area.

Romance / How To Actually Follow Through On The Relationship Advice You Get by agfastlink: 7:57pm On Sep 22, 2019
How to Actually Follow Through on the Relationship Advice You Get. He argues that the key to happiness is to not care about most things, and choosing a few specific, values-based things to actually care about. It’s an approach the Hollises agree with. “We think the most important foundation for a couple is establishing your relationship values,” they said. “Essentially, deciding which things matter most to you together so you know where to put your time and your effort.” The thing about forming new habits is that the behaviors themselves often aren’t intrinsically motivating. But if we can connect to the underlying values behind those actions, that can be much more powerful. You’re not just making an effort to give your partner more compliments or do the dishes without being asked; you’re working on becoming a specific kind of partner, like a sensitive, kind or trustworthy partner.
To identify the values in your relationship, try having a conversation with your partner about the following questions: “What do you think defines a great relationship?” “What qualities in a relationship are most important to you?” “What would you like more of in our relationship?” Get curious about your partner The reason I know my husband loves cuddling so much is because I asked him, “What are the top three ways that you like to be shown love?” After 12 years together, I think I know the guy pretty well, but I still like asking him those kinds of questions. For me, the concept of curiosity keeps me on my toes and prevents me from settling into complacency. It means there is always something new that I can learn about him. If you’re having trouble identifying core values in your relationship, or you want to start a bit smaller, the “top three” question is a great one to begin with. Pick a starting place Instead of trying to overhaul your relationship in one fell swoop, try to pick one specific starting place for improvements. The Hollises said that laughter is one of their core values. They told me, “It may sound cheesy but we are best friends first and laughing together is what made us friends in the first place.” From there, they brainstormed ways to bring more laughter into their lives. “Can we watch a comedy special, can we play a game, can we go on a road trip, do something we’ve never done before, add a date night on the calendar, plan a trip? There are all sorts of roads that will get you to your goal but you only see the available paths when you’re looking for them.” Once you have a list of possibilities, pick one to start with. Barrie Davenport, author of “Mindful Relationship Habits,” said in an email: “It’s impossible to successfully make several changes at a time because we’re rewiring our brains to accommodate new behaviors. Just one new behavior can feel overwhelming until we groove new neural pathways to make the behavior automatic.” Having trouble picking your starting place? In his book “The All-or-Nothing Marriage,” Mr. Finkel outlines eight “love hacks” that are effective at bringing couples closer together. Mr. Finkel recommends picking a specific love hack with your partner, then creating a concrete game plan for putting it to work. I asked Mr. Finkel to share a few of his favorites, and he outlined three: 1. Reappraise conflict: The basic idea behind this is to “think about conflict from the perspective of a neutral third party who wants the best for everybody.” In other words, if a therapist was in the room with you, what might they say when you and your partner are arguing?

Education / Positive Movement In Nigeria Film Industry – Ifeanyi Akogo by agfastlink: 6:55am On Sep 22, 2019
I see positive movement in Nigeria Film Industry – Ifeanyi Akogo .Nigeria is a country endowed with human and natural resources, blessed with eco-friendly vegetation. Being one of the largest populated black regions in Africa it has overwhelming human potentials in virtually all areas of endeavour, namely sports, music, film industry, science, business and education among others. If you recall the statement allegedly credited to Mr. President that ‘Nigeria youths are lazy’ which trended for some time, and elicited massive reactions; a Nollywood actor, Ifeanyi Humphrey Akogo, claims that it is a misconception of the reality on ground.

Speaking on issues concerning youths and vices among other things, he stated that the country is one of the most popular entities in the world that has all it takes to build a strong economy if the youths can really think out of the box, explore and channel their creativity positively.

How National ID Day’ll help Nigeria achieve legal identity for all in 2030

Ifeanyi Humphrey Akogo is a former banker turned actor and broadcaster, currently anchoring a radio show, an evening drive show programme called ‘Music and moments on 99.3 Nigeria Info fm Lagos.

He is also a popular face in the Nollywood industry with series of primary roles to his credit. He played the role, ‘Mr. Midas’ in the popular Tinsel TV series on the Africa Magic Television. He has made successful contributions in the Nollywood industry, also featuring in various television drama series and movies, like the ‘Battleground’ and ‘Choices’ among others.

Speaking on the strength of entertainment sector which he belongs, he stated: “I see great positive movement in the film industry in Nigeria. It’s an industry that was self-created and flowered into something that has been appreciated across the world. That is a Nigeria project for you. The standard is getting higher and it has evolved. The production quality is such you can compare with movies done in advanced countries despite the fact that it has not gotten the kind of support other film industries across the world enjoy.”

Akogo, using his formative years to draw points, stated, that no background could be used as a yardstick to measure success if there is determination and focus: “I grew up in a humble family of seven siblings and I am the first. My upbringing was a complex one, but the experience was quite exciting. My parents are from Ukwuani, Ndokwa West in Delta State, but I was born and raised in Ibarrapa area of Ebute Metta and later moved to Orile Iganmu, all in Lagos mainland where I stayed with my grandparents till the later days in my life.

Initial, life challenges did not deter me from forging ahead and as it stands today, success to me is a recount of positive steps taken from the time past,” he said. Akogo also attributed his success story to his grandfather who he calls his idol: “My grandfather was just an awesome fellow. He gave me the room to be me.

I was his errand boy and he encouraged the artiste in me. I can truly say that he inspired what I am today. He gave me the freedom to explore life and he also told me stories that shaped my life. He was a retired Sailor with the Merchant Navy, so he had seen the world across many seas and he told vivid stories too.”

Ifeanyi sees every Nigerian youth as potentially endowed and see no reason such talents cannot create wealth positively. He bemoans the trending “Yahoo, Yahoo” phenomenon that is slowly eating the fabric of the society, and challenged the same to channel such ingenuity into meaningful goals.

“I am a creative entrepreneur involved with creative works on radio and TV productions. My acting experience started in the church. My background basically started when I was in primary school but I never knew that it was a direction I was going to go. I went to St John’s Secondary School in Lagos and finished at Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Back then in School, I was the President of the School’s Literary Society where I had lots of opportunity to act on stage. I was also the school’s dancer. Thereafter, I went to Delta State University where I studied Health Education.

Journey into acting

“It was an innate thing because right from primary school, I participated in various drama groups that moved round the country to perform. This was when the interest grew and sharpened my desire to participate in stage plays. I did about 20 stage drama then. I also found out that while I was in the banking industry, the art was brewing underneath me. By the time I was leaving the corporate world, I discovered that I always felt at home talking to people or dramatizing events in an expressive way to make people laugh. My class session was always fun because I mixed up teaching with drama.

VDT deepens internet market with new experience centre(Opens in a new browser tab)

“I did my first production in 2006 called ‘Choices’. It was a film that was produced under the auspice of the late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya of the Fountain of Life Church, Lagos. She put the story together that featured lots of big names in the Nollywood and it was the first movie we did commercially, directed by Don Pedro Obaseki. I also featured in a movie, “Tango”, another production of the Fountain of Life Church; a 26 episode series that ran on local television in Nigeria.

“My first break on mainstream TV production came when I had the opportunity to play the character “Mister Midas” on Tinsel episode in 2015. “Mister Midas’ was a crooked character that had a part of him stealing from the person he was managing. Because he was crooked in the series, he got more attention, and of course, Tinsel is huge, showing in almost 50 African countries – with that visibility people started knowing the face and it eventually became a brand.

After that, getting acting offers for films started rolling in. I have done films for Rok Studios directed by Desmond Elliott, and others by Mike Ezuruonye, Iyabo Ojo, and Fehintola Ogunlana to mention but a few. They were all primary roles having major actors in it.

Describing the projects, Ifeanyi disclosed: “So far, the biggest role I have ever played, from my own perspective, was in the movie “Battleground”. It is a TV series that ran for 2 years. It was an African Magic Production and the second part which was, “Battleground – Final Showdown” which just ended.

In the movie, Battleground’, I played the role of “Boniface” who was the General’s henchman. He did all the dirty jobs for him. It was the hardest character I have ever played because “Boniface” didn’t say too many words but he elicited a lot of fear with his facial expressions and body language, there was huge action behind the role.

The role I played in Battleground really elevated my status as an actor. It was a great story that people watched and it however gave me an edge because I have been severally accosted by people both within and outside the countries saying “I know this face.”

Inspiration

“Watching the casts in the rested Nigeria Television Authority NTA’s weekly comedy, ‘The Masquerade’ inspired me. As a child, I used to love the character played by the late Claude Eke (Prince Jegede Shokoya). He was an Igbo man playing a Yoruba man fluidly and another character was ‘Natty’, the hungry guy. He does not say much, but when he appears, his expression and body language says much. Another person was the late Justus Esiri of the ‘Village Headmaster’ among others. The fact that one could live a certain life in a film and still maintain his real life outside is what inspires me most. In movies, I could be any person and play any role, but outside movies, I am simply Ifeanyi.”

Experiences and its impact in film productions

“I must say that this is one area that helped me in my acting career. There are certain productions that would not be able to pay me what I should earn, I mean low budget productions, but sometimes, I do such production because of the names behind it. It is a win-win affair; you have to give this and take that. I have done productions that paid less money but it was done because I needed to be involved with the big names behind the production for visibility sake.

“As an entrepreneur, I have managed funds and time, and when it comes to acting, it helped to check my desire for production deals. In the industry, some actors may take roles regardless of how much they are paid. Some may even take peanuts for a role because there is no standardized mode of remuneration. For me, I was very independent as an entrepreneur before going into acting and that was an edge, because I could be careful in choosing the roles I play.

Attributes to success

“I have been gifted and favoured on that part of the art. It’s been good. I have moved on from doing some sort of low budget films to large ticket productions. When I was chosen to do my first TV movie in “Tinsel”, one of the qualities the producer noticed in me was my voice. I was asked to read a script and well… I can say my voice announced me.Read more

he Producer was impressed and told me, except someone has a better voice, you are already chosen, and I was, eventually. I think my voice has some magic that projected me. I have also been able to work as a Voice Artist on many projects out there. Other things are my facial expressions and body language. These things come to me naturally. The producer once commented that he liked the way I handled roles because I go the extra mile to project the character beyond expectations. He said I own every role I play. For instance, when I was given a minor role as ‘Boniface’, I did it so well that the producer kept writing me into the story till the end.Having won some awards and hoping for more he lamented that Nigeria Nollywood needs some re-strategizing to help the industry grow further. “One of the things that needed urgent attention is the project planning and logistics process in the Nollywood industry. A lot of time and resources are spent while shooting movies. So many avoidable obstacles impede quality productions which is not good for the industry. The lack of adequate infrastructure for producing movies as obtainable in other clime is a major burden to the industry.

For instance, if you are supposed to be on set to shoot for five days but because of the commercial constraints, you work beyond your limit to do it in three days, while other climes, you may be given just one role and you will be paid for 3 months prior to shooting just to research and get into the character very well, so that you can perform flawlessly.

Here in Nigeria, who would want to pay you to spend a long time just to get into a character? We have not gotten there yet. However, I am hopeful that these types of improvement will happen soon in the Industry”.

NYSC / My Nine Steps To Success As A Phd Student In Nigeria by agfastlink: 4:35pm On Sep 21, 2019
My nine steps to success as a PhD student in Nigeria. Nadia Bormotova/Getty..In 2014, I left the United Kingdom after earning a master’s degree in medical physics at the University of Aberdeen, followed by clinical training at the Royal Marsden Hospital hospital in Sutton, London. When I returned to Nigeria, I enrolled in a PhD programme, also in medical physics, at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife.My nine steps to success as a PhD student in Nigeria.

I came home to be closer to my family, and to develop medical physics and advance the fight against cancer in Nigeria.

My decision to pursue a PhD met with the following reactions from friends and acquaintances:

• “So, after getting an international degree, why do you want to get a doctorate in Nigeria?”

• “A PhD is the highest academic degree, and where you get it matters a lot.”

• “Please leave the PhD for the men and focus on your family. Remember, you are a woman!”

• “With the incessant strikes by university staff, it takes about eight years for a serious person to get a PhD in Nigeria.”

• “There is no good equipment in the laboratories, so you can’t do good research.”

• And my favourite: “Aren’t you supposed to be planning your marriage? Don’t forget you are a woman; you wouldn’t look attractive to prospective suitors with a PhD!”

There are many stories about how Nigerian research is not on a par with that of developed countries — in part because of scant research funding, the poor state of the country’s education system, limited access to international journals, unreliable Internet services and a lack of the modern facilities and equipment needed to conduct meaningful research.

But researchers in Nigeria can navigate these problems. I did so by reading articles written by past and present students about their PhD experiences, and asking colleagues at home and abroad how they overcame the obstacles they faced.

I discovered that you can achieve almost anything if you commit yourself to it. Even with the best research facilities and supervisors, success depends largely on applying yourself and making the best of whatever situation you are faced with.

I learnt that finishing my programme ‘alive’ was as important as doing engaging research that solved a problem in my locality. Here’s how I overcame the following challenges along the way:

1. Finance

I had a job to fund my tuition, study and research. If you do not have a scholarship, fellowship, stipend or grant — all of which are hard to come by at most Nigerian universities — you will need a stable source of income.

2. Well-being

I took care of my emotional well-being. Nigerian culture still often considers the idea of mental and emotional health to be a ‘foreign’ concept. I was often depressed, angry and frustrated during my PhD — largely on account of problems with broken lab equipment, missed deadlines, my fluctuating weight, frequent travel abroad to use other institutions’ equipment, sleepless nights trying to understand what exactly my research was about, and the stress of working and studying at the same time.

I couldn’t afford a psychologist, so I talked things through with my parents, supervisor, siblings and friends. I had a strong support system, and shoulders to cry on when I needed them. At the click of a mouse, I could also get help from colleagues within and beyond Africa.

3. Support

An online network of former classmates, supervisors and senior colleagues was at hand to give me advice and help through e-mail, Skype and other social-media platforms. Also, friends overseas could download articles for me if my institution didn’t have the necessary journal subscriptions. When developing your own network, you can also consider connecting with people who are working on, or who have worked on, projects that are similar to yours to get much-needed guidance. A simple Google search on researchers in your field can work wonders.

4. Networking

I hung out with other research students to get information about upcoming conferences, seminars, workshops and similar events. The research students you interact with do not have to be in your department, or even in your university. You might be surprised by how much information circulates among students on campus.

5. Pragmatism

I chose a realistic project. If, like me, you are a perfectionist and bookworm, you will understand the urge to want to do a ‘star’ project. But I can tell you from my own experience that it makes more sense to consider the environment you are in before you choose a research topic. I had to change my project topic four times, because I found that there was no way I could have finished if I had gone ahead with my first three ideas. If possible, carry out a feasibility study of your project — discuss your ideas with your proposed supervisor, and listen to their opinion. You both have to be on the same page.

6. Hidden costs

I considered the costs before setting out. A PhD is an expensive journey financially, emotionally and psychologically. You are investing at least three years of your life in a ‘business’ that might not yield the profit you hope it will. The probability of isolation and frustration is very high; stories of students who take their own lives, who become clinically depressed and who can’t complete their programme abound online. You have to prepare for the hidden costs of what you are getting into.

7. Life

I tried to keep in mind that life happens. Unexpected difficulties such as illness, grief and disappointment came up during my studies. I had to overcome these. You are never really prepared for what life brings, and things don’t always have to go the way we plan. Detours are sometimes OK.

8. Mentors

I realized that choosing the best supervisor for me was more important than choosing a particular institution. My supervisor, Fatai A. Balogun, had been my mentor for years, and was one of the few medical-physics professors in Africa. I heard many stories of bad supervisor–student relationships, and I wasn’t going to put myself through the pain of having a supervisor from hell, or one who just didn’t like me. Balogun had my best interests at heart, and I went the extra mile to ensure things were ‘smooth sailing’ — by not missing any of our appointments, for example.

9. Help

I sought help when I needed it. A few times, I got stuck trying to understand a concept or method, and I wasn’t ashamed to ask colleagues at home and abroad for explanations. My monthly income wasn’t enough to fund my research and meet my needs, and when I asked my loved ones for help, they were able to come to my rescue a number of times.

I tried to avoid feeling intimidated by the professors. You can do this, too. They have all travelled the same path that you are now on. They were once students, and one day you might be in their position.

I made up my mind to complete my programme in a maximum of four years, and drew up a timeline that I stuck to as much as possible. With the right strategy, supervisor, mindset and determination, it is possible to do good research in Nigeria, and to finish your PhD within a reasonable time frame. I got mine in 2018! Remember, the major factor in your success is you.

Business / Book On Gendered Encounters In Nigeria And Abroad by agfastlink: 1:38pm On Sep 21, 2019
Book on Gendered encounters in Nigeria and abroad .The Thing around Your Neck Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie New York: Anchor Books/Random House, 2010 Pp. 218   The twelve stories in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “The Thing around Your Neck” are a virtual kaleidoscope reflecting the contemporary reality of Nigerians, with occasional reversions to the past. Half the stories are firmly grounded in Nigeria, while the other half unfold in the United States. The book tells that almost no story is without reference to the US, showing what an important immigration destination it has been, especially for educated, upwardly mobile Nigerians. There is nothing generic or predictable in Adichie’s animated prose which literally sparkles with significant details that pile up to point to big, overarching issues, from government corruption and police brutality, to false prejudice and pretentiousness. Every character is individually drawn, every scene is very specific, as the stories reveal what separates people and what unites them. Adichie’s adeptness at portraying the interaction between her characters is the key to the stories’ fascination and impact. Sometimes, a chance encounter opens a whole new horizon. Unlikely friendships provide succour to the hurt and confused. Each story has multiple themes—love, spirituality, child upbringing, cultural and class differences, colonial remnants and more, yet gender is ever present. Two stories foreground a sister’s resentment of the preferential treatment her brother receives, but the families involved are totally different and the stories end in totally different ways — a consequence of Adichie’s expansive imagination and her apparent perception that every case is different.  Jobs at UBA BANK Apply.                                                                                   The “Big Men” phenomenon, as it plays out in Nigeria and the US, is the focus of three stories wherein women discover the fallacy of blindly following their husbands’ or partners’ every wish and struggle to reclaim their lives. These stories also cover the immigrant experience and different strategies for adjusting to life in the US. Navigating Americans’ assumptions about Nigeria can be tricky. As one immigrant concludes: “white people who liked Africa too much and those who liked Africa too little were the same — condescending”. (p. 120) It is not only Nigerian men who can be overbearing. Another story portrays a writers’ workshop in South Africa run by a British “expert” who tries to tell the aspiring, young African writers what subject matter is genuinely African and what is not, all the while engaging in sexual harassment, which he claims is not a suitable topic. Adichie counters his insidious assumptions with several stories where sexual favours are demanded of women in order to get jobs or a place to stay.  There are shocking outcomes to human frailty and greed, and heart-warming cases of empathy and kindness. A pivotal story shows an upper-class, Christian, Igbo woman and a poor, Muslim, Hausa woman who are trapped in a small space when seeking cover from a riot that pits these two population groups against each other. The understanding that springs up between them defies news reports on ethnic conflicts and convinces the Igbo woman of what her sister has been saying: “Religion and ethnicity are often politicised because the ruler is safe if the hungry ruled are killing one another.” (p. 48) “Ghosts” is arguably one of the most subtle, intricately structured stories in the collection, dealing with memories, dashed dreams, the failures of the corrupt ruling system, the contradictions between education and feeling, and the fluid boundaries between the “real” world and the spirit world. A retired university professor encounters a man he had thought was dead, a man who had been an energetic political organiser for Biafran independence in the 1960s, a man, he realises, “who carries with him the weight of what could have been”. (p. 66) Though the two exchange reminiscences, the professor doesn’t reveal that his only comfort now is “the visits” of his deceased wife, because, as he thinks, “We are the educated ones, taught to keep tightly rigid our boundaries of what is considered real.” (p. 66-67)  “The American Embassy” features differences in African and Western perceptions. Nysc Requirements For Registration/Mobilization.                                          A Nigerian woman, whose baby was murdered by soldiers coming to arrest her journalist husband, finds no solace in the US asylum system. Still in shock, she is unable to document the crime and unwilling to barter her dead son for a visa to safety.  The exception to the contemporary stories is “The Headstrong Historian” that reverts to the time when slave traders and missionaries invaded Africa. An interesting thing about this story is that it reveals well-developed self-governing structures among tribal Africans, but sometimes these bodies couldn’t stop particularly greedy tribesmen. This led a resilient woman to send her only son to the missionaries’ school to learn English, so he could stand up for his rights in the courts, but instead she lost him to Western culture. “Nwamgba knew that her son now inhabited a mental space that was foreign to her,” but she lived to see her granddaughter who will restore her African pride.  Adichie has become an internationally acclaimed author for her vibrant prose and her ability to articulate complicated human relationships, whether cross-cultural, inter-African or man to woman (sexual politics). Her writing is a potent literary protest against cruelty, lost potential and the stifling of freedom, but more than that, it holds out hope that people can recover their humanity by compassion and courageous actions. These stories are rich enough to be read and reread.
