Education / Re: Share Your Experiences As A Postgraduate Student In A Federal University! by aigjoey(m): 12:53pm On Jan 08, 2017
Absolutely an interesting discuss, our Dr and prof are obsolete. Hence, MSc depends on 80% of self effort. I am from delsu. The delay is partly the students fault and partly the school. In delsu, lecturers are mild from my experience but there are some stupid ones who believed they are demi gods and will always fail you. God is already dealing with them anyway. Also, the new vc is trying to organize the program and the improvements are laudable. The acceptance fee is 45k and school fees is 111k. Returning students pay 95k. Give delsu a try but ur personal effort counts.
Foreign Affairs / United States Agreeing To The UN Resolution To Condemn Israeli Settlements? by aigjoey(m): 1:54pm On Dec 28, 2016
What do think about the United States agreeing to the UN resolution to condemn Israeli settlements
Well, I disagree that the US didn’t “agree”. Given that the U.S. had the opportunity to veto (as did Russia, China, France and the UK, who voted in favour), the decision to abstain was huge. It was a calculated vote that echoed what the Obama administration has been saying for eight years - the settlements and the “two-state” solution are mutually incompatible. Although it didn’t agree with the resolution, it essentially agreed that the rest of the Security Council had a valid point.

And, indeed, the settlements are indefensible if Palestine is supposed to be a sovereign state. It’s not like there aren’t other isolates in the world (like parts of Belgium inside the Netherlands) but in all of those cases, those are historical accidents from a time before sovereign borders existed. The settlements were all built in what used to be Jordanian territory that, officially, is still “occupied territory” from the 1967 war (that’s almost 50 years now) that even Israel will admit isn’t “officially” part of Israel. Israel has annexed part of the occupied territories (which, although imperfect, isn’t really more problematic than Russia re-annexing Crimea) but, technically speaking, neither the settlements nor the land between Israel “proper” is “Israeli territory”. It’s territory that Israel says will one day be Palestine.

Now, the problem with the settlements isn’t that they contain Israeli citizens. I would see no problem with a rule that Israelis can live wherever they want in Palestine (without citizenship rights) and Palestinians can live wherever they want in Israel (again, without citizenship rights). That’s the situation in the European Union right now. The problem with the settlements is that they insist they’re part of Israel and not part of Palestine (even though, technically, they’re in Palestine). It’s like if English people moved into Calais and started claiming that French claims over it were invalid. The settlers are there because they want Israel to annex the West Bank and they don’t want Palestinians there at all.

Now, the only reason this works is that Palestinian authorities know that, if they tried to dismantle a settlement, the IDF would be on them like white on rice. Israel has made it clear that they will defend Israeli citizens in the settlements. Israelis in those settlements know that, so they keep expanding the settlements with the tacit (if not explicit) approval of the Israeli government.

Ideally, all the Israelis in those settlements could be relocated into Israel proper. That’s not going to happen. The settlements are really nice, and a lot of time, money and effort have been invested in them. If, for some reason, the Israeli government tried to dismantle one, it might start a civil war. In fact, they’ve tried that with disastrous effects. It’s also clear that the fears of Israelis in the settlements about how they will be treated if Israel abandons them are very justified.

So, as long as the settlements exist and the Israeli government supports them, Palestinian sovereignty is meaningless. Everyone knows that. Israel knows that. However, Israel continues to officially maintain that Palestinian sovereignty is still possible despite the existence of the settlements.

As such, the UN is pushing again for a “one state” solution - one country with both Israelis and Palestinians with, perhaps, a federal system and strong local control. Belgium is a good model - half French Catholic and half Flemish Protestant with Flemish speaking cities in the French countryside, French speaking cities in the Flemish countryside and a single capital - Brussels - where numbers are roughly equal. Now, the French and Flemish in Belgium hate each other probably a little less than Jews and Arabs in the Middle East do, but federal systems have worked for diverse populations elsewhere - in Canada, in Switzerland, and even in the United States.

However, Israel has consistently rejected the possibility of a single state. They do have a point - the demographics are working against them (much as the demographics in the US are working against white people). However, they seem to want it both ways and, at present, there is very little pressure on them. Part of the reason is that the United States gives more foreign aid to Israel on both an absolute basis (it gets more than any other country) and a per capita basis. The U.S. isn’t about to cut off Israel any time soon (one reason, a lot of that money comes back to the United States for things like weapons). Furthermore, the U.S. is committed to making Israel viable (which it increasingly is). However, despite the fact that the U.S. has literally been working for forty years to find a workable solution, at present, things are arguably worse in that part of the world than they ever have been with no end in sight.

In truth, Israel has little to worry about. Trump is likely to be very supportive of Israel. The vote was largely symbolic. However, the Jewish vote on Israel is getting less important as time goes by. Jews supported Hillary Clinton by a larger margin than African-Americans did. Most Jews in the United States are not very supportive of Israel any more. That’s largely because Jews tend to be more liberal, are unlikely to have any direct connection to the country, or actually left Israel because they disagreed with their policies. Things could change drastically for Israel in a few short years (as they did for Cuban Americans in the last two) and if the U.S. government does finally say “enough” they had better come up with a cunning plan.. and fast.

Foreign Affairs / What Is The Electoral College And How Does It Work?us Election Explained by aigjoey(m): 12:19pm On Nov 02, 2016
Really, it's not that complicated
Us Presidential elections aren't the same as our elections. Here's our guide to how America decides who's won

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/what-electoral-college-how-work-9177613.amp

There's just a few days to go until we find out if Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will replace Barack Obama as President of the US - and the results are going to be complicated.

US Presidential elections aren't the same as our elections - for a start they vote for their Congressmen and women separately from the president.
And even then it's not quite as simple as "first past the post".
It may seem a pretty convoluted way to decide who runs the country.
But it's not that hard to get your head around, and it mostly makes sense.
You can even be the most popular person at the election night party by explaining it to everybody else.

Here's our guide to how America will decide who won.
Wait, they don’t just count the votes and whoever gets the most wins?
Nope. And you can (mostly) blame this guy.
The US founding fathers decided they wanted a "buffer" between the population ant the selection of a President. They feared a tyrant would be able to manipulate public opinion and seize power.
They also had to make a compromise with some of the small states, who felt
they would lose influence because of their small population.
So how does it work?
Each state gets a certain number of "electors" - essentially votes - which is roughly proportional to the size and population of the state.
Most states award their electoral votes on a "winner take all" basis. So if most people vote Democrat in Florida, the Democrats get their 29 electoral votes.
Maine and Nebraska dish their votes out proportionally.
In total there are 538 electoral votes spread across the states, and a candidate needs a majority of 270 of them to win.

US Election States map

If they get less than a majority, Congress gets to pick.
Technically the electors are actually people, who cast a vote each for president and vice president, but in reality, they usually go with how the state votes. There have only been a handful of occasions where an elector has gone rogue, and it's never decided an election.

The 11 states that could decide the result of the US Presidential election

Has anyone ever won the popular vote and lost the election?

George W. Bush is a big fan of the electoral college system

There certainly have, most recently in the 2000 election, where Al Gore won the popular vote by about half a million votes, but still lost out to George W Bush when the courts decided he’d won Florida.
Before him, Benjamin Harrison denied Grover Cleveland a second term in 1888, despite getting a narrow majority in the popular vote.
Rutherford B Hayes was outpolled by Samuel J Tilden in the 1876 election, but ended up striking a bargain and winning the presidency after a massive row over electoral votes.

And John Quincy Adams (1824) won neither the popular contest nor the electoral vote - but because neither won a majority of electoral votes the House of Representatives got to pick the winner.
They decided to make Adams the President, and rival Andrew Jackson was rather upset about it. He proclaimed the election of Adams a “corrupt bargain.”

Foreign Affairs / Trump Closing On Clinton Amid Fall Out From Fbi Email Bombshell by aigjoey(m): 12:17am On Oct 31, 2016

Latest polls show Trump closing in on Clinton amid fall-out from FBI emails bombshell
Capturing Florida would give Trump a viable, if narrow, path to final victory
David Usborne New York Sunday 30 October 2016

Donald Trump addresses supporters in Las Vegas on Sunday AP
There are signs that the race for the White House is tightening amid continuing fall-out from the 11th-hour announcement by FBI director James Comey that he was assessing new emails potentially related to the use of a private email server by Hillary Clinton while Secretary of State.

Most notable were two new polls showing that her Republican rival, Donald Trump, may be finding a way back into the contest by becoming newly competitive in Florida, a key state with a large trove of Electoral College votes, without which he would have no plausible path to victory.

Additionally, a new Washington Post/ABC poll showed Ms Clinton leading Mr Trump by a perilously close two points nationally in a four-way race including Green Jill Stein and Libertarian Gary Johnson at 47 per cent versus 45 per cent, which is inside the margin of error. The same poll had Ms Clinton enjoying a huge 12-point lead just six days earlier.

But it is the movement in his favour in Florida that will particularly encourage Camp Trump. A New York Times Upshot/Siena poll released on Sunday had the GOP nominee up four points in Florida in a four-way race, 46 percent to 42 percent. While Ms Clinton has various ways to reach the 270 Electoral College votes necessary to clinch final victory even without Florida, that is almost certainly not the case for Mr Trump. He has to win it.

Hillary Clinton attacks FBI handling of email review
All the new polls were conducted before Friday when Mr Comey dropped his new emails bomb, the precise impact of which remains uncertain. However, the anxiety it has created in Ms Clinton’s circle is tangible as one after another of her allies called on Mr Comey to clear up the confusion over what the new emails may or may not contain.

Their existence came to light in a brief letter sent by Mr Comey on Friday to leading members of Congress. It was extremely scant on detail, saying nothing beyond the fact that they may be “pertinent” to the investigation into her email server which the FBI formally concluded in July.

While it is now known that the new emails were found in devices shared by Huma Abedin, one of Ms Clinton’s closest aides, and her husband, from whom she is estranged, Anthony Weiner, there has been nothing more from Mr Comey on why they may be of interest. It even appears that many may be duplicates of emails the FBI has already analysed.

"We never thought we were going to say thank you to Anthony Weiner," Mr Trump declared at a rally in Las Vegas on Sunday, virtually taunting the Clinton campaign on the issue. "Corruption is corrosive to the soul of a Democracy, and it must be stopped. We have one ultimate check on Hillary’s corruption, and that is the power of voting. The only way to beat the corruption is to show up and vote by the tens of millions, including millions of people voting for the first time in their entire lives."

Adding to Democrat frustration has been confirmation that before he sent the letter, Mr Comey was strenuously advised to desist by the Justice Department which argued it would violate long-existing groundrules about not doing anything close to an election that could change its course.

It seems that Mr Comey may not even have seen the emails in question. In a subsequent email message to FBI employers on Friday, he said, “we don’t know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails”. Meanwhile, if he does decide to re-open his investigation, any new findings may not emerge until after election day.

“As far as we know now, Director Comey knows nothing about the content of these emails. We don't know whether they're to or from Hillary at all,” Tim Kaine, her running mate, said on Sunday. He added that if Mr Comey “hasn't seen the emails, I mean they need to make that completely plain. Then they should work to see the emails and release the circumstances of those once they have done that analysis.”

Ms Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta, said the director’s handling of the matter was “inappropriate”. He also urged Mr Comey to be more transparent because the disclosure came “in the middle of the presidential campaign so close to the voting”.

Late on Saturday, meanwhile, a group of four Democratic senators – Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Dianne Feinstein of California, Thomas Carper of Delaware and Benjamin Cardin of Maryland – wrote to Mr Comey and Attorney General Loretta Lynch demanding a full explanation of the FBI’s actions by Monday at the latest.

“We request you provide us with more detailed information about the investigative steps being taken, the number of emails involved, and what is being done to determine how many of the emails are duplicative of those already reviewed by the FBI,” they wrote.

The battle for the Supreme Court will continue for Clinton
The first sign of Mr Trump closing the gap with his Democratic rival in the Sunshine State came in the middle of last week, when a Bloomberg News poll gave him his first lead there for several weeks. Sunday also saw the release of an NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll that had them essentially tied in Florida with Ms Clinton at 45 per cent and Mr Trump at 44 per cent.

Ms Clinton was in Miami this weekend. On Saturday night she joined Jennifer Lopez on stage at a concert held in support of her campaign and on Sunday she visited a Miami restaurant to urge Democrats to vote early. As patrons ate Sunday brunch, she said she wanted to get them “fuelled up” to head directly to early voting stations and cast their ballots.

Africans are laughing at the US elections on Twitter.

Allegations of sexual assault, high-level corruption and vote rigging are normally found in less stable countries, but this year's presidential race is testing the resilience of America's electoral system. Nigerians in particular have found the irony of the world's foremost democracy slipping into embarrassing feuds and demagogic threats too hilarious to resist.

Thousands have been picking events apart on Twitter under the hashtag #Nov8AfricanEdition - a reference to the date of the election.

Under the hashtag, Nigerians and other Africans have been flipping the script and imagining how events in America would be reported if they were happening in Africa, with fake "breaking news" headlines and sarcastic support.

The tag began trending after the third presidential debate, in which Donald Trump hinted he might not accept the election result if Hilary Clinton wins. The jokers saved their best material for Trump's claim that the US campaign is "rigged."

The tweet storm was whipped up by prominent Nigerian satirist Elnathan John:

On Nigeria's most popular chat forum, Nairaland, a number of posts specifically targeted Trump in a thread named "What does Donald Trump hope to achieve by calling the election rigged?" The conversation was heated. "It is obvious the [Republican Party] is fraudulent," read one comment, while another shot back: "Trump will make a fine president that will restore America back to its glory."

Some felt the jokes were too close to the bone, including one Nigerian government official who resented the self-deprecating tone of the #Nov8AfricanEdition posts.

But the overwhelming majority of tweets were light-hearted. Nigerians, in particular, appear to be enjoying the calamitous US election as it unfolds.
