Thanks snazzygirl..I thought about all your questions and the answers to them is 50/50..my programme is 2yrs..I have decided to stay since am here already.I really appreacite your time.
Snazzygirl:

Mheeen...sounds like you have some serious decisions to make. Your story just gave me questions, so I probably don't have a solution for you #sorry. This is the first thing that popped into my head....if you go back and complete your contract, what will you do till fall 2016 after completing the contract? Can you extend the contract? Will you stay at home till August next year doing nothing?
On the other end, I'm assuming you signed a six months contract. Is it wise to burn your bridges? Will the company be ok with you quitting "politely"? If you decide to stay put here, you'll probably be fine on $700 a month for a while if you cut your "suit" according to the "fabric yards". How many years is your program? Do some calculations based on how much you have right now in your account + TA pay, do u think u'd be fine for the length of your program? Do you think you need another job? Where do you want to be, what do you want?

Pardon my one million questions, just sharing my "weird thought process" grin. Anyways, go back to the drawing board, answer all the questions above, make a decision FAST and communicate the decision to the parties negatively affected (with apology). Good luck! smiley

Thank you Sir..Honestly my coming here was fire brigade approach.Came back to naija on Saturday..had interview on Monday and collected my passport on Thursday.. Travelled on Saturday...All in the name of retaining the TA position..Someone advised me to discuss with the Prof about my remaining contract with my company. I woudnt mind going back dats if I can get a TA/RA come fall 2016.
biikeys:

Well..change doesn't always feel good initially-you're not alone there.
I was the only African in all my classes throughout. That's a typical situation in a lot of schools..you just need to mix and interact with people. Trust me, the Indians and Chinese have lots of information. You need to get close to take advantage of that. Some of them also make really good friends.
And...you're already here. My advice is to just complete what you've come for-it's a worthwhile investment! You're a TA which is even better. If your school allows internships, you can start applying to companies for CPT after your first semester. That way you can go on internship after two semesters. You'd probably lose your TA but then you will have to do some analysis to see which one benefits you more.
But then, it's your decision!

My story continues...Honestly people should listen to gurus here for advice..prepare wella before coming..I am in a temporary accommodation here organized by international centre but I smell some difficulty ahead because we are just five Nigerians here.. I dnt even knw who to share apartment with..Na white community,I am thinking of going back now..please I need advice.. This is my story.. I was not doing pretty well in Nigeria before,so I decided to opt for a master degree in order to boost my profile..After the process had reach 95%..I got a contract outside naija.. Whx was $5k/per month, the contract was suppose to be 6months but I discovered payment voucher is being raised every 3months..I got TA offer in school, school resumption coincide with visa expiry.. Because of fear of unknown I came to US..so that I won't lose on both sides.cos my second. Payment might or might not be raised..I have resumed my TA job, started classes..I have even started discussing RA job with the prof in the future but my company is asking me to come back and finish my contract... I am thinking of deferment but I dnt want to look bad to the prof becos i need this kind package wen nxt am coming back..I am confused as hell..Ojap,imperrilox,Msnas and other gurus..i need help..I only came to US with $10k(two salary wey I do) so I am scared as hell. Tuition $6k for one yr becos of the TA position I got..TA position/$700 per month, cost of living is low here too.I can only take care of myself for a yr..na the other yr dey make me fear ..na why I wanted to change to Canada the other time but I dropped it cos of advice here..make una no abuse me oh..abegi una..I fit use $25k build house for my village and do masters in SA and still come back to US..na confused human being I be..lol..less I forget, one naija guy working with the prof..told me some people were praying I shdnt come cos they needed my fund too..I can defer till fall 2016 cos I can't make spring again..maybe I can work more and come back next yr but I still need TA/RA position.. How best can I break the news to him..abi make I sit down jejely since I don land.

Thanks Nsnas, the reason why I want to work is to be able to foot the bills as well as studying.. A friend of mine in Canada was able to do dat..I am just scared the way people talk abt US here though I can't stay back too..I just wanna give it a shot togeda with option B.
MsNas:

Like OjaP said, Canada is always the worst hit when oil prices fall. They fire almost immediately and the retrenchments are always massive. I know a couple of people who are living in Canada, got fired because of the oil prices mess and are currently applying to jobs in the U.S. I'm not a geologist but I've got geologist interest. Lol

You mentioned that you are looking for ways to save as a student. Might I remind you that you're a student, your main reason for being either in the U.S or Canada is to study and not to work? Which means even if you have a part time job while working in school you will just be cutting it close in terms of finances. No student can save millions of dollars while on a student salary, either Canada or America. There is no much difference between the standard of living in the U.S and Canada. Infact I found stuff in Canada more expensive than the U.S (or maybe I'm just too stingy. Or maybe that store was just expensive smiley ) Plus it was freezing in Canada in May....when it's summer in the U.S... sad Lol, j/k

You also need to take your finances into consideration. You mentioned that you have an Assistantship here. Do you have one on Canada? Or do you have the promise of one? To me, a bird in hand is worth a million in the bush. Weigh your options.

Lastly, think about career prospects. Last semester, I was there with my advisors conducting interviews for the new GAs in my department and one of them got talking about her brother in Canada. My professor who worked in Canada and is a Canadian PR (he's Taiwanese though) said he moved to the U.S because career advancement was just not forthcoming. You might wann think about your job prospects after graduation.

Do your list, weigh your pros and cons and I pray God leads you aright.

Thanks boss,is half GA But I can foot the bills for now..Lolv
anikemoses:
you are even lucky to have a GA,check the terms of the GA,if its Gpa based, that means u will have to maintain a certain gpa to retain it,should it also be full tuition waiver,u are good to go,I was also in ur shoes, just know that every great achievement started with a quantum leap..

Ojap and GboyegaD,God bless you boss..Let me make my case open here. There is nothing to hide at the moment..I really need serious advice before I miss out.I was initially working before I got these admissions and GA offer.I chose to study at the moment becos my PO renewal isn't feasible as it is.School resumption date and PO renewal time coincide, so i decided to study in order not to miss the GA offer.I am thinking of going to Canada because I heard is easy to save in Canada as a student than US.I am going to US with all my fortune and I dnt want to fall out of status.. That is one of the reasons I am thinking of crossing to a country I can use my skills to work and also study. I am really scared with all this analysis from Bigfrancis..though I have savings to survive for time being but i wish to put my skills to work.Canada school resumes in jan. o
OjaP:

What program are you currently in here? I'm hoping that you know that the oil industry is in a complete mess at the moment. I hope you also know that thousands of people have been laid off and companies are not hiring like before again. In case you don't know, Canada oil companies are always the worst affected whenever oil prices go down. The reason is simply because their operating cost is too high (heavy oil) and anything they do may no longer be economical in a sector majorly controlled by the market place. This is not the best time for the oil industries and I would suggest that you have a rethink. I pray that whatever decision you eventually make would be best for you.

Good luck.

I already have admission in Canada(Petroleum related)but not in graduate school. How possible is getting the visa from US before I waste my money on the acceptance fee.
GboyegaD:

I don't know about transferring at graduate school level however, you can apply into a graduate program afresh and apply for your study permit right there from the U.S.
Graduate school curriculum differs across schools most times because different schools have their research focus but you could look for a program whose interest is in sync with what you are doing and give a very good reason on why you are seeking transfer.
