The commercial nerve centre of Onitsha, Anambra State was agog recently during the inauguration of the 11th President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA). At the event, the new ONICCIMA boss, Uche Apakama, a renowned pharmacist and the managing director of Pax Pharmacy Group, promised to unite all chambers in Anambra State to establish a single state trade-fair. He said that he was seeing a situation where the three chambers would have one-voice to enlighten and unite traders and manufacturers more. Apakama said that the state should have a unified trade-fair yearly, which would be tagged “Anambra International Fair,’’ which would not just promote trade and commerce but also enrich the culture of the state He said that the chamber would vigorously pursue an effective and responsive leadership guided by consistent interventions on issues bothering on the business community in Anambra and the entire South-East. “I would make it imperative that all industrialists, business operators, service providers, market associations and professional bodies in Onitsha and environs realize and appreciate the need to belong to the chamber so as to speak with a strong and unified voice in matters of common interest,” he said. The new chamber boss said that he would work for the realization of the “the Four- Point Development Agenda of Governor Willie Obiano-led administration in Anambra State”. He said that the chamber would relate with relevant ministries, agencies, and departments, as well as development partners to create opportunities and assist in driving Obiano’s dynamic developmental plan. He said that the chamber would strive to play a leading role in the drafting and fashioning of Anambra economic policies by establishing a formidable team of experts that would advise and complement effort of the government. “ONICCIMA under my watch is determined to establish cordial working relationship with the Anambra State House of Assembly in her onerous task of giving good legislation to the state, just as it will play an active role in preparation of the state budget. “ONICCIMA is equally poised to facilitate trade in Onitsha and environs, we shall continue to offer service like letters of reference and processing of travel documents such as visas for members seeking such. “Our chamber in collaboration with NACCIMA will provide opportunities for members in international trade through trade missions in and outside Nigeria and assist in reaching bilateral trade agreement with interested parties. “We will aggressively advocate for the development of Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSME) in the state and work towards being the focal point for the development of MSME in terms of access to funds, assistance with feasibility studies and business plans,” he said. Also speaking, the Director-General and Chief Executive of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr Ike Odumodu, challenged Igbo traders not to compromise quality and desist from importing into the country sub-standard products from China and other countries at cheap prices so as to make enormous profit at the detriment of people’s lives and the local consumers. Odumodu revealed that when he visited China, he asked them why they dump into Nigeria products they cannot use in their own country, and the Chinese told him that it was some Nigerian businessmen who gave them specifications in order to produce products at cheaper rate for them. He lamented that Nigeria lost leading multi- national companies like Berec, Michelin, and Dunlop, among many others, due to this massive importation of cheap and substandard products into the country. He also said that this has made Nigeria to lose opportunities to employ their teeming youths in such businesses and local ones, stressing that no nation can survive and grow to become developed economy by concentrating in imports as Nigeria is currently doing. He then advised Nigerian businessmen to work hard for their products to meet international standard if they want to gain access to the global market. In his speech, the Anambra State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Commerce, Mr Ifeatu Onejeme, said that declining oil revenue has made it imperative for the diversification of the economy, which he said Governor Obiano has started. He said that with the prevailing situation, members of the chambers who are entrepreneurs should see it as an opportunity to join hands with the state government and the governments in the South-East zone for economic revival and emancipation. Taking full cognizance of the dwindling fortune of oil revenue in the country and the deflationary effects of economic activities, ONICCIMA called on the governors of the South- East to step up moves toward creating enabling environment for the promotion and growth of export business in the zone. The chamber in a communiqué issued after the annual lecture series tagged: “The Onitsha Perspective,” pleaded with President Muhamadu Buhari not turn off his eyes on the 2nd Niger Bridge project which was awarded to Julius Berger by his predecessor, asking him to as a matter of urgency complete the project. The chamber also urged the governments of the South-East states to fast-track the growth and development of non-oil export business in the zone, stressing the need for the state governments to quickly revive, empower and strengthen the committees on export in their various states for more effective actions on export business henceforth. The communique was signed by the President, Mr Uche Akpakama, the Director General, Mr Dominic Ajibo and other top officials of the chamber. In a chat with notable transporter and the Chairman of GUO Group, Chief Godwin Okeke, he urged traders to think of diversifying their businesses beyond buying and selling in order to catch up with the global developments in business. He pointed out that businesses such as farming, fast food, confectioneries and exportation are currently paying off than importation because of inflammation in exchange rate, high level of competition among importers and fakery of imported goods. He regretted that Onitsha was yet to realize its potential in business because of over dependence on buying, selling and importation. Okeke, however, noted that the security challenge, which hampered and jeopardized the potential and growth of Onitsha over the years, had been resolved by Governor Obiano. “The major challenge facing Onitsha is lack of steady power; if not, the commercial city has enough potential to catch up with Lagos and other major commercial cities in the world. We appeal to President Muhamadu Buhari to put more effort on power generation and distribution,’’ he said. Okeke thanked ONICCIMA for organizing the lecture, adding that the lecture was not just thought provoking but also an eye-opener. sunnewsonline.com/new/onitsha-chamber-of-commerce-inaugurates-11th-president-charts-new-frontiers-in-business/ 1 Like |
Politics / Re: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by AnambraDota: 7:20am On Sep 30, 2015 |
The way things are going in East, the North may wake up one day and see no trailer loads of cattle or livestock is heading to East. East has embraced agriculture more than anybody, am still looking shaa. For poultry farmers in Enugu State and the South-East region – their major headache – travelling far distances to get day-old chicks has been completely cured. Before now, the farmers had relied on hatcheries in the South-West and other regions of the country for their farms. But last week, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and other relevant stakeholders officially commissioned the ultra-modern Animal Health Farms and Hatcheries, a privately-owned hatchery built in partnership with the state government through the Commercial Agricultural Development Project (CADP) and the World Bank. The commissioning of the hatchery has seen poultry farmers in the region now heaving a sigh of relief. This is as the hatchery, which is capable of producing 30,000 eggs in a week, would reduce the hardship experienced by poultry farmers in the state and the South-East geo-political zone in travelling far distances to buy day-old chicks from other regions. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony and first roll out of Day-Old Chicks (DOCs) of the hatchery, Ugwuanyi commended the establishment, describing it as a laudable gesture which would greatly enhance poultry farming in the state. The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Water Resources, Mike Eneh, noted that aside relieving poultry farmers in the state of the stress of going to the South-West to procure DOCs, the hatchery would also help in providing jobs for the teeming youths of the state. His words: “This is the second hatchery in the South-East and also in South-South and from what we have seen so far, I think people from Kaduna and Kano also take their own chicks from this direction. Apart from reducing the stress witnessed while going to buy DOCs from outside the state and the risk of transporting them, another thing it did was that it reduced the cost of day-old chicks from 250 to about 180. So, we are quite delighted. We thank the World Bank and commercial agriculture project for their support in this too. “Initially, poultry was nothing in Enugu. But thank God that today, it has grown in leaps and bounds, being the fourth in the country and second in the South-East and South-South. Last year, I recall that the net addition of the poultry industry, outside hatchery, to the economy of Enugu State is about 1.48 billion. The reason is simple; Enugu has one of the best weather conditions for poultry industry in Nigeria. So, we hope to invest more in poultry production in the near future.” The governor also disclosed the state government’s plan to initiate policies aimed at the overall development of other areas of farming such as cashew production. According to him, “Enugu State has one of the best cashews in the world in terms of quality. There are two important things we need to do. One is the aggregation center which we proposed to build in Obollo Afor and the second thing concerns geo-products.” He said that he would “support any community that is willing to give us land, so that we can train these farmers, give them seedlings so that they can plough them in five hectares as an enterprise and also create jobs”. Also speaking, the National Coordinator of CADP, Dr Babandi Amin, praised the management of the company for deeming it fit to establish the hatchery, pointing out that it would go a long way in boosting poultry farming not only in the state but also in the entire country. Dr Amin harped on the need to sustain the venture, saying that the issue was not really on establishment but in making efforts to sustain what was already on ground. “We should also be looking at the results we are getting. Are the results commensurate with the inputs we are making or are they below the expectations? We should also look at the demand of poultry in the state and be able to determine whether what we have on ground already is meeting these demands or not. It is when these things are considered that we will be able to say we are reaching our goals of making these poultry products available to our people accordingly,” he said. Also speaking, the Manager, Animal Health Farms and Hatcheries, Dr Benjamin Oguejiofor, explained that part of why the hatchery was established was to compensate for the treatment meted to day-old chicks distributors, especially those from the South Eastern part of the country by already existing hatcheries that are mostly located in the South-West. He noted that due to the fact that over 80 per cent of the hatcheries in the country are located in the South-West, people from the state while going to purchase DOCs, usually involve in great risks which he listed as threat to lives occasioned by night travels, exposure to armed robbery, road accidents, chick mortalities, among others. According to him, the vision of setting up the hatchery was actualized with the emergence of the state Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP), which he said has played a great role to seeing that the hatchery was established. “The success story of CADP intervention is why we are here today, to celebrate dream come true”, he said. While pointing out that the hatchery has a total egg capacity for 95,040 with a multi-stage setter capable of handling 30,000 eggs every week, Dr Oguejiofor expressed hope that the hatchery would not only provide poultry farmers in the state with quality and viable day-old chicks, but would also provide over 100 jobs mostly to natives of Enugu State and others by extension. He, therefore, called on the state government and other relevant stakeholders in the state to key into the idea of improved poultry production in the state, adding that “if we are able to improve on the little we already have now, Enugu State will soon emerge as one of the best states in terms of poultry production”. Also commenting, the state Coordinator of CADP, Mr Robinson Nduaguba, expressed optimism that the hatchery was a sign of more good things for farmers in the state, adding that “this is a form of provocation to the youths in Enugu State to go into a project that will keep them very busy and make the state to be a food security zone. “I know that Enugu State is already creating an enabling environment for private sector investors and the example shown by this establishment is quite challenging. We will do everything possible to make sure that this establishment doesn’t relax. Instead, it will continue to improve and by so doing meet the expectations of our people.” 24 yrs boy started importati sunnewsonline.com/new/poultry-farmers-smile-as-gov-ugwuanyi-commissions-hatchery/ 7 Likes |

Igbo population should be decreasing, or at worst stagnant, we don't need t o many people around it will breed evil and other social vices due to lack of jobs and other social issues attached to over population. Smaller but healthier families should be the anthem now. 2 Likes |

NAIJASOM: Thanks bro, we need to raise the consciousness in Igboland, we need not Rochas, Obis or Obianos to make progress, we need Okparas, Mbakwes, Ibiams to set Igboland on a strong and solid footing. Increase the consciousness decrease the number of household, Igbos need healthier households than populated cities, towns and villages. If governments in Igboland will go on massive enlightenment campaign on the need to have smaller households of not more than (3) three children half our problems will be solved, stop polygamy, check teenage pregnancy and promote adoption, Igboland will be a 2nd world nation in 15 years to come. Ban street begging, child labour, increase compulsory education and open more technical and vocational schools, ban street trading but increase agriculture and tree planting, promote sports and social activities and make sure the children always have one competition or the other to compete inorder to keep the busy. 1 Like |

chino11: The issue is that many of you don't know Ojukwu. Ojukwu believed in Nigeria just like Zik but the Massacre of Igbos was the event that prompt for his leadership and he was already an administrator and one of the highest ranking surviving officers Igboland after the massacre. Ojukwu believe in Nigeria just like Zik. The core and unapologetic tribalist was M. I. Okpara, though he was a Zikist but doesn't give any fucck about whether Nigeria was burning or collapsing. MI Okpara was the most uncouth and visible tribalist among them the reason why his development agenda benefited the entire Eastern Region. Okpara was outspoken against the Nigeria State, he rejected everything even where Zik would seek for compromise Okpara don't. Even the mad Gambari prof Angl Abdulahi attested to it that Okpara was the biggest stumbling block in having a workable Nigeria. Ojukwu's emergence was just by circumstance, he was not a tribalist but the massacre and FG silence brought out the beast in him. Ndigbo need an MI Okpara not an Ikemba to move foward. We need core Biafrans, the current crop of Igbo leaders are nothing but birds of passage, Ohakim, Pita Obi and OUK with their massive investments outside Biafra won't go against the grain to make Biafra great, they will protect their business interests first before Biafra interests. 10 Likes |

OdenigboAroli: Am very very disappointed with this statement of yours, your inciting Nigeria troops to shoot MASSOB and IPOB, these are someone's children, parents and breadwinners. Have you seen Yorubas asking FG to kill OPC rather Mimiko told the world Yorubaland is safer in their hands, Buhari openly campaigned for Boko Haram while tagging every military clampdown on them anti-North, how many Niger Delta did you see condemn militancy but its only in Igboland that people like you and the drunk at Agu Awka call for the killing of Biafrans. Am neither a member of MASSOB nor IPOB but calling for the killing of someone's children is the greatest evil I have ever seen when these groups are not armed. Obiano called for killing of IPOB but Ibaji people were there beheading his kinsmen at Aguleri but he couldn't do anything, Boko Haram inmates were relocated to Anambra State under his watch yet he couldn't do anything until traders started agitating. Its very very unfortunate how you guys are being this Nigeria, Anambras and Igbos in relation to others. Its stinks, its sordid and detestable which should be properly condemned. Those who lived in stone houses shouldn't throw stones. I saw where Chino was threatening MASSOB and IPOB people that if they try it in Anambra State they will be given Ezu River treatment, I felt like shedding tears, I was disappointed, I was devastated over the comment, kill someone else because you don't believe in his ideologies yet he pose no security threat to you.
