NIGERIAN LADY MAKING THE FIRST WASHABLE/ REUSABLE SANITARY PADS IN NIGERIA Sexual abuse experiences are usually indelible. Having 9 years cruel, incredible and sour experiences, the founder of Pad-Up Creations, Olivia Onyemaobi raised a campaign against child sexual abuse in July, 2015, educating and rehabilitate children, especially the ones suffering from sexual trauma in Nigeria. In September, 2015, she published a fiction-“The missing star” which addressed the consequences of not speaking out when a child is sexually abused, which she used as a campaign tool to schools. She and her volunteers addressed and counseled over 1500 girls aged 7-17 in October, 2015. During the course of counseling and rehabilitating the girls, she discovered that many of the girls are exposed to sexual abuse because their parents could not afford some of their material need one of which is “sanitary pad”. She also discovered that out of the 1500 girls counseled: * 68% had infections due to the use of unhygienic materials during menstruation (Use of leaves, rags, old foams, dry grass, sitting on sand, etc). *79% are usually absent from school during their menstrual week because they could not afford sanitary pads. *97% of them lacked self esteem *70% regret being girls because of their menstrual flow. *95% of the girls counseled have had sexual intercourse at least twice in exchange of material needs, one of which is sanitary pad. *42% of the girls counseled were lesbians at that age. All these issues and more led her into research to find the most affordable, healthier and eco friendly menstrual solution for the Nigerian women and girls. Hello, I discovered that using disposable sanitary pads have exposed a lot of women and girls to several health issues like Urinary Tract Infection, Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases, Toxic Shock Syndrome, adverse and allergic reactions, burns, irritation, rashes, etc. Most of these diseases are as a result of the chemicals in the pads they use or the use of unhygienic materials to care for their menstrual flow. Most disposable sanitary pads contain synthetic fibers, petrochemical additives and dioxin. Rayon is a synthetic made from sawdust and a byproduct of it is dioxin, which the EPA says is likely cancer-causing substance. The US Environmental Protection Authority published reports shows that dioxin is linked to: *Abnormal tissue growth in the abdomen and reproductive organs *Abnormal cell growth throughout the body *Immune system suppression *Hormonal and endocrine system disruption. Have you wondered what is in disposable pads that absorb the blood? Have you questioned what turns the blood on your pads to gel? What effect do you think it has on your body? Why are most of the sanitary pads and panty liners made by Longrich and other big sanitary pad manufacturers NOT FOR PREGNANT WOMEN? A number of disposable pads are plasticized.
