Nigeria has suffered enough in the hands of Argentina, its high time we return the favour.

African Footballer of the Year 2017: Victor Moses profile

When Victor Moses looks back on his career, the Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder is more than likely to see the 2016-17 season as a major turning point.

After years of loan moves, the 26-year-old finally cemented his role at Stamford Bridge - so much so that he became an integral member of their Premier League-winning team.

The date Moses might look back on is 1 October when Chelsea coach Antonio Conte, following comprehensive defeats by Arsenal and Liverpool, switched to a 3-4-3 system and fielded Moses in an unfamiliar right wing-back role at Hull City.

It was his first league start for the Blues in over three years but Moses was far from overawed - producing a man-of-the-match display with his natural attacking instincts and desire to track back.

The Hull victory was the start of a record-equalling 13 consecutive Premier League wins for Chelsea and 22 consecutive league starts for Moses, until he briefly succumbed to injury in April.

The previous month, the onetime drifter had anchored himself to the Blues by signing a new contract - completing his remarkable turn of fortune at a club he joined in 2012.

While this was largely down to Conte giving Moses a new lease of life by seeing something in pre-season that others never had, the 26-year-old still had to take his chance and - in one of the season's least expected narratives - he fully did so via stamina, strength and speed.

As well as winning the Premier League, Moses also received an FA Cup runners-up medal after Chelsea lost to Arsenal in a final where the Nigerian tinged his successful campaign with a red card.

Moses played only three internationals this year, but in his first he scored in a sensational 4-0 destruction of Cameroon that knocked the African champions out of qualifying and smoothed Nigeria's eventual passage to a third straight World Cup.

Now Moses could become the first Nigerian since Jay-Jay Okocha in 2004 to win the BBC award.

Saraki and Dogara returned to Aso Rock and met with Buhari alongside Vice-President Yemi Osinabjo, Ita Enang and Sulaiman Kawu, presidential aides.

President Muhammadu Buhari has tendered an apology to members of the national assembly over a row with security personnel earlier on Thursday.

Led by Senate President Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, the legislators went to the presidential villa for a meeting with Buhari.

The meeting was about the 2018 budget.

However, the lawmakers reportedly left the villa in anger after security operatives insisted on screening them.

Buhari later reached out to them but majority of the lawmakers had left the residence of Saraki where they converged after the embarrassing encounter.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, October 20, in Istanbul urged D-8 leaders to prioritize incentives and measures aimed at increasing trade and investments among member countries.

Speaking at the ninth summit of the D-8, President Buhari said the private sector and business communities in the economic organization must be assisted with incentives to widen economic cooperation among member-states.

He said:

‘‘As the D-8, we need to intensify our activities with a view to enhancing various measures and incentives introduced to promote trade and assist the business communities from Member States to invest in our countries and widen our cooperation.

‘‘We need to work hard to establish integrated manufacturing structures and markets. I will like to reiterate the importance of increasing trade and investment among our Member States.’’

According to a statement, the president reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to international trade and development even as he affirmed the country’s readiness to host the meeting of D8 ministers of industry from November 14 to 17 in Abuja.

Highlighting the attractive business and investment opportunities in the country, Buhari stressed the need for prospective investors to take advantage of the Federal Government’s new policies on trade facilitation.

He said:
''Nigeria is committed to, and is actively pursuing a policy of trade and investment facilitation for growth. The gains from trade are reflected in greater competitiveness, improved productivity, job creation, consumer welfare and prosperity.

‘‘Economies that grow fastest and at more sustainable rates are those that actively promote trade and attract investment. We are committed to creating an enabling environment and making Nigeria an attractive place for business and investment.''

The president also urged D-8 member countries to support the efforts of the African Union (AU) to establish the first ever single market for trade in goods and services on the continent. He described the AU-backed Continental Free Trade Area for Africa as a ''win-win for all, including member countries of the D-8.''

He added: ‘‘I am pleased to inform you of positive market developments currently in Africa, that will support our efforts as Members of the D-8 to enlarge our markets, facilitate our trade and investments, and develop our economies.

‘‘In Africa, we are on the threshold of finalizing negotiations to establish the first ever Single Market for Trade in Goods and Services on our Continent, in the Continental Free Trade Area for Africa. This will be a win-win for all, including member countries of the D-8.

‘‘As partners, I urge that we work together to support this effort of the African Union that will have a positive effect on global economic development and integration.''
