Politics / Buhari Cancels Wednesday’s FEC Meeting by Baze1(m): 1:50pm On Apr 19, 2017 |
ABUJA-The Wednesday edition of the Federal Executive Council, FEC weekly meeting has been canceled. But the presidency said that it was not planned to hold in the first instance. The Presidency also refuted claims of fresh concerns over the health of President Muhammadu Buhari, a speculated possible reason for the cancellation of the FEC meeting. It will be recalled that President Buhari stayed away from the meeting last week contrary to every expectation. His Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo functioned in his place. The spokesman of the government and Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed at the end last week meeting told State House correspondents that the president was not ill. Mohammed said that the President delegated the power to preside on Osinbajo having considered the agenda of the meeting light. He added that the president was also in the country and was attending to “other issues”. The Minister however assured that the president who was at his official residency would resume duties in his office later that Wednesday or Thursday (yesterday). He said: “Clearly when we came in this morning, Mr President was not in the chambers but the Vice President did preside over the council meeting. Understandably, that has sparked a lot of controversies and imputations in the mind of people. “I just want to make this clear, Mr President is in town. Mr president is attending to other issues. Mr president looked at the agenda, it was a very light agenda and decided that the Vice President should preside. “It’s not unusual for the kind of interest that is shown especially given the fact that Mr president was away for a while on medical treatment and is not. We are not surprised that people will be wondering is he ill again? “He is not ill, he is not sick. I am sure that later in the day or tomorrow morning, he will be back in the office. I just want to clear that misconception. “It is not unusual even if Mr president is hail and hearty and everything is going on well, for the VP to come and preside over meetings of the federal executive council. “The fact that Mr President is not in the office does not mean that he is not working. I have just been told now that the secretary to the government is already with him in the residence working. So, the fact that you did not see him in the office does not mean that he is not working at all.” But it was learnt that the President was also absent from office on Thursday as there was no known function he attended. He however attended the Junmmat prayer Friday last week at the Presidential Villa Mosque. Asked to confirm the cancellation of Wednesday meeting, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina said that it was not scheduled to hold in the first place. He said: “It was not to hold in the first place. It was not cancelled. You cancel something that you have planned to hold. There was holiday on Friday. There was holiday on Monday. So, it was not planned to hold. There is no law that says that FEC must hold every week.” In the similarly vein, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said that the Easter holiday was a possible reason why the meeting did not hold. He said that memos were not circulated to the Ministers by the FEC secretariat. “The staff on the Council secretariat resumed on Tuesday after the Easter. There was no time to prepare and circulate memos to ministers. By practice, the ministers receive council memos two or three days ahead of meetings because they must read them and sometimes undertake research. It is not a rubber stamp council. So everyone must prepare themselves well for debates”, he said. The Presidential spokesman also dismissed assumptions of a health breakdown, saying “”That will not be fair.” Recall, however, that the President was flown to London, United Kingdom January 19 on a medical vacation. He returned to the country March 10. Since his return, President Buhari has remained literally indoors, only meeting with some government officials who briefed him on some matters including security. His only “big” function was the launching of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERGP which held at the Council Chamber inside the Presidential Villa penultimate week. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/buhari-cancels-wednesdays-fec-meeting/ |

Politics / We’re Chasing Those Who Stole Our Money, Adeosun Tells World Bank by Baze1(m): 4:32am On Apr 19, 2017 |
Finance Minister, Mr Kemi Adeosun, yesterday, told the World Bank and parliamentarians from across the world that the whistle-blowing policy of the Federal Government was very successful. Speaking at the global parliamentary conference hosted on the sidelines of the World Bank and IMF spring meetings in Washington DC, the minister highlighted Nigeria’s economic reform agenda and the need for strong executive and legislative collaboration. She said: “We are going after those who have stolen our money. We have put in place a very successful whistleblower programme that is delivering results, and allows those who report illicit activity to receive up to 5 percent any funds that we recover. “We are also significantly improving our financial management controls to ensure that it is considerably more difficult for public funds to be diverted. We have to do more though and that means collaboration with the legislature. “We need tighter tax and financial reporting legislation and to ratify bilateral agreements so that our enforcement agencies are empowered to deliver the results that we need.” The whistle-blowing policy has aided the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in making recoveries across the country. Adeosun also called for greater focus on collaboration in battling illicit financial flows from Africa, adding that this was a core pillar of the government’s strategy to significantly enhance domestic government revenue and deliver sustainable economic growth. She said: “The government is focused on resetting the Nigerian economy by addressing our traditional over-reliance on oil revenues and establishing the basis for sustainable non-oil revenue growth. “To improve non-oil revenues, we have to address illicit capital flows. When stolen money is transferred from Nigeria, or other African countries, there are too few questions asked by those countries that receive the funds, but when we identify those funds as stolen and seek to recover them, there are too many questions being asked. “There is money sitting in foreign bank accounts that we have spent over a decade trying to recover. That is money that could deliver significant value for Nigeria as we seek to increase spending on critical infrastructure and establish a basis for long term sustainable growth.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/chasing-stole-money-adeosun-tells-world-bank/ Cc lalastical mynd44 1 Like

Business / Dufil Prima Foods, Makers Of Indomie Noodles Takes Over Dangote Noodles. by Baze1(m): 4:21am On Apr 19, 2017 |
DANGOTE Flour Mills, yesterday, announced it has exited its noodles business and has sold the assets of Dangote Noodles to Dufil Prima Foods, makers of Indomie noodles. The company said in a statement that its regular business portfolio review reveal that the noodle business was not strategic to its vision. It stated, “As part of its regular business portfolio review, Dangote Flour Mills (DFM) has exited its noodles business as it does not consider it strategic. The company has sold the assets of Dangote Noodles to Dufil Prima Foods, makers of Indomie noodles. To smoothen the transition, DFM has offered Dufil the use of some of its facilities on an interim basis. The noodles business was part of Dangote Flour Mills which the Dangote Group recently re-acquired from Tiger Brands.” Group Managing Director, Dangote Flour Mills, Thabo Mabo, said the divestment was part of strategies of focusing on core areas of flour and pasta production where the company has substantial market share. He said that with the divestment, Dangote Flour will now focus on its strengths in flour and pasta and become more profitable by improving in areas of quality, distribution and marketing. Mabo said,“The transaction which became effective last Monday is a win-win situation for Dangote Flour Mills, Dufil Prima Foods and staff of Dangote Noodles, as Dangote Flour stands to boost more market presence through robust marketing.” He described the sale and transfer of assets as one of the most perfect divestments, with Dufil Prima Foods taking possession and kicking off production immediately, stressing, “Under the terms of sales agreement, Dufil Prima Foods, will continue to produce and sell noodles under the brand name, ‘Dangote Noodles’ for two years before changing the brand name.” Chief Executive Officer, Dufil Prima Foods, Deepak Singhal, confirmed the deal and described the acquisition of Dangote Noodles as strategic as they continue to seek more dominance of the noodles market. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/dangote-flour-divests-noodles-business-cedes-assets-dufil/ 2 Likes

Education / Bill To Abolish Discrimination Between First Degree, HND Passes Second Reading by Baze1(m): 8:44am On Apr 13, 2017 |
A Bill for an Act to abolish the discrimination between First Degree and Higher National Diploma (HND) in same profession passed second reading in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The bill, which was sponsored by Rep. Ali Isa (Gombe-PDP) and Rep. Edward Pwajok (Plateau-PDP), seeks to prohibit the existing dichotomy between both certificates. Contributing to the debate, Pwajok said a research he carried out on both certificates, showed that the discrimination had no moral justification. He said that the unfortunate situation would make the international community to look down on the status of educational institutions in the country. The lawmaker said that it was unfortunate that such discrimination existed in a critical sector required for national development, regretting that there was a lot of segregation at employment level. According to him, those with first degree are placed on Grade Level 8, while those with HND are placed on Grade Level 6 or 7. He said that in some organisations, degree holders were paid N100, 000 at entry level, while their counterparts with HND were paid N70, 000. But, the lawmaker said, in other countries, technical experts were paid higher than administrators, adding that “the reverse is the case in the country’’. He said that if the private sector must develop, proper recognition must be given to polytechnics and similar institutions in the country. After the debate, the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara, forwarded the matter to the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services for further actions. Recall that The Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), aligned the salary scale of officers with Higher National Diploma (HND) to Grade Level 8, equal with holders of university first degrees. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/bill-abolish-discrimination-first-degree-hnd-passes-second-reading/ Cc lalastical |

Politics / Breaking: Ex-ebonyi Governor, Martin Elechi Decamps To APC by Baze1(m): 9:28pm On Apr 09, 2017 |
The immediate past governor of Ebonyi, Chief Martin Elechi, has defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Elechi, a two time governor of Ebony, registered for the APC at his country home in Echialike, Ikwo Local Government Area, in front of national party leaders. The party leaders were in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi capital, for a thanksgiving church service for the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari from his ill-health, after which they moved to Ikwo. According to Elechi, he decided to join APC due to his love for Buhari and the current state of the PDP occasioned by its protracted crisis. “I knew Buhari 49 years ago when I started the movement for the creation of Ebonyi as he intervened during my arrest with nine other comrades, by officers of the defunct Nigerian Security Organisation (NSO). “I was interrogated while standing for nine hours and he as the Brigade Major in Abakaliki at that time, ordered our immediate release. “I thank God for his health as he had favoured the people of Abakaliki and will triumph in his onerous task of rescuing the country from misrule.’’ Boko Haram and corruption issues could have been indescribable if God had not brought Buhari to power, he said. The former governor said that he was proud of the PDP due to the democratic ideals of its founding fathers, but its present leaders have truncated the ideal. “I was elected governor on two occasions under its platform as it used to be the pride of Africa, but was suddenly ravaged by self-inflicted crises and afflictions. “In 1983 when I was the Secretary of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the old Anambra, the budget for the national elections in Anambra and Imo, now South East zone, was N170,000. “In 2015, however, the budget for my impeachment was N3 billion and this was followed by the distortion and malpractice recorded in the primaries and congresses to elect the PDP candidates.’’ He described the APC as the alternative for Ebonyi people and the Igbo race and thanked the party for offering him and his supporters, a political platform to identify with. “Three years ago, I would have attacked anyone who said Ebonyi belongs to APC, but currently, me identify with PDP–God forbid,” he said. Dr Ogbonnia Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, thanked Elechi for the decision and noted that President Buhari will be pleased to receive the news. “What you did today will never be forgotten in the history of the state as we all should support President Buhari to actualise all his objectives for Nigeria. Elechi was the leader of the campaign team when Onu contested Ebonyi governorship in 1999, on the platform of All Peoples Party (APP). Alhaji Kasheem Imam, APC National Leader called on the Igbos to identify with the APC. Mr Emma Enukwu, the APC South East Zonal Vice Chairman, noted that he was in the state on the orders of the National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun to ensure that Elechi registers with the party. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/breaking-ex-ebonyi-governor-martin-elechi-decamps-apc/

Politics / Northern Nigeria Will Be The Poorest If... Emir Of Kano by Baze1(m): 9:02pm On Apr 05, 2017 |
Emir of Kano, Sanusi Muhammad II says if Nigeria were to break up into components today, Northern Nigeria would be the poorest countries in the world. The Monarch said this in his key note address during the opening ceremony of Kaduna State’s Investment and Economic summit (KADINVEST), titled ‘Promoting Investment Amidst Economic Challenges’ in Kaduna state today April 5th. Emir stressed that it would be a disservice to use the standard of living of Nigerians residing in oil rich Niger Delta or commercially viable Lagos and business oriented south-east, to compare that of the North. According to the Emir, the North East and North West regions are the most poorest regions in the country and even in the world. "As far back at 2000, I looked at the numbers, Borno and Yobe states, UNDP figures, Borno and Yobe states, if they were a country on their own, were poorer than Niger, Cameroon and Chad. Nobody saw this because we were looking at Nigeria as a country that averages the oil-rich Niger Delta, the industrial and commercial-rich Lagos, the commercially viable southeast, and you have an average.Break Nigeria into its component parts, and these parts of the country are among the poorest, if it were a country. And we do not realise we are in trouble”he said Continuing the monarch said "Other Muslim countries have pushed on. We are fighting culture, we are fighting civilisation. You tell me that you should not write love book in northern Nigerian. What is the crime of those books?” he asked. He decried the burning of science books in some parts of the Nort due to religious beliefs. On the culture of marrying more than one wife and given birth to children without proper Family planning, Sanusi said “Of what benefit is it to the north, having three million children roaming about?” he asks 2 Likes |
