I was reading an article on the effects of smoking and taking in harmful substances and I can only be grateful to God I don't have any of those. I was an extremely intelligent girl in school, my teachers and family would say I was a gifted child. The sky wasn't even my stepping stone at the rate my brain functioned.

At the time I wrote National Common Entrance I was number three in the whole nation and my parents actually expected more because they knew what God had bestowed upon me. When I got into secondary school, I was still doing well but I had become a 'Gucci girl'( a clique in school). We were among the funky/cool/popular ones. In most sets, there's always that clique. We hung out together, partied a lot and became very unserious with my academics.

By the time I was leaving school, with all my truancy and misbehavior I nicely got 4Ps and 4Fs. That could never get me into any institution. Before then, I went for the holidays in Kano to stay with my older sister and so when I heard my result was out, I bluntly refused to return to Lagos because I knew my oldest sister who had slaved to send me through school will reset my brain with a few strokes of the cane.


RELAPSE
So somehow I read and wrote my exams again and passed. Then I mixed with a few friends. I got curious about cigarette smoking and then I became worse than the people I learnt from. I have always been a happy person, so partying was inevitable. I got into drinking as well, and then heavy drinking. I stopped going to class mainly because I was either tired from partying hard all night or hung over from excessive alcohol. Inevitably I dropped out of the first University. I remember a time where I woke up in the morning on the street with the sun shinning so bright over my head. I somehow gathered myself and went to another University where I finally managed to graduate.

I remember eavesdropping on a conversation my friends were having about buying me a birthday gift, and one of them suggested a roll of cigarettes and the rest of them were in agreement and trust me, I was happy and thought they were the most thoughtful people I had ever met. That would save me a large sum of money because of course that was what I did with all my cash.

I moved to Abuja and met a new set of friends who were into substance and prescription drugs and I got sucked in so fast. At that time, my sister had opened a travel agency which I was managing and I contributed largely to the shutting down because I continued in my destructive ways of substance taking, heavy drinking, smoking and partying and I mismanaged the agency because I was always hungover and coming in very late.

At the time, I had an ambition of making sure I had #1200, which would buy me my fix for the day. After taking that, I would become totally useless to myself and unproductive and that was how I lived my life until I became very unhappy with my life style ‎and became very lonely.


RECOVERY
One day, I ran to the only friend I could run to and she introduced me to a woman who I opened up to and that was the beginning of my walk to freedom from the chains of drugs. I dedicated my life to Christ and since then miraculously my cravings disappeared . It has been 5 years and I've never ingested any of those things I thought I couldn't live without.

I am now so passionate about helping people especially women get out of addiction, I am an inspirational speaker, I have a blog where I reach out to young people and women. I try my best to make sure I talk about it every opportunity I get so young people can learn from my story of how I wasted productive years in addiction.

There’s no denying it: Women are calling for change. They’re mobilized, invigorated, and determined to make sure the future is one that supports them both in their personal and professional pursuits. But a recent study says there’s one glaring area where women aren’t standing up for themselves. And that’s a huge bummer.

Only 34% of women negotiate their job offers, compared to 46% of their male peers, according to a recent survey of more than 2,700 workers by global staffing firm Robert Half. And actually, from my experience as a corporate recruiter, I’d say the discrepancy is even greater! We expect today’s modern women to be more vocal and fearless than previous generations, so this news is especially bewildering.

As someone who has been on the other side of the desk in countless job-offer negotiations, I can tell you this: Everyone should negotiate their salaries.

With all of that in mind, I thought I might offer some insights for women on how to approach this kind of discussion with confidence. You might be surprised to find out it’s really just a simple conversation. Let’s break it down.
Go in knowing you’ll ask

Yes, even if the original offer is a good one. Yes, even—especially!—if you feel awkward asking. I’ve experienced candidates who were completely confident and self-assured, as well as candidates who stumbled over their words. While the latter individuals were clearly uncomfortable, guess what? They still managed to ask and, yes, they almost always got more money. They stepped out of their comfort zone and reaped the rewards.

In your head, try to make this an essential for the job-search process, just like wearing a suit to the interview or writing a thank-you note afterwards. If you’re afraid you won’t follow through, tell someone else—like a trusted mentor or friend—and get that person to hold you accountable.

Need motivation? Bear in mind that women still earn only roughly 80 cents to every $1 that men do—the figure drops to 63 cents for African American women and 54 cents for Hispanic women. And every time you don’t negotiate your salary, you’re likely growing the pay gap even more between you and your male colleagues.

How would you feel if you knew the guy in the next cube over who has the same title was making 21% more than you were? Or better yet, how happy would you be with 21% more money in your biweekly paycheck?

Another way to think about it: When you negotiate your starting salary, you’re setting a baseline. The higher you start, the higher your salary will be with each incremental raise you get at that company. (Oh, and if you don't see a raise after two or three years, definitely start looking for a new job.)
Be prepared

In order to know what you should be asking for when negotiating your salary, do your research ahead of time. Start by looking up your job title and geographic region on Salary.com or Payscale.com. This will give you a starting point.

Next, initiate conversations with former colleagues, as well as with mentors and industry organizations you belong to. State something like, “I’m excited to pursue new job opportunities, but it’s my mission to get paid what I’m worth. In the spirit of sharing information—I’m not asking you what you specifically get paid—but what do you think the going rate is for my title and my years of experience in this area?” The more conversations you have, the more educated you’ll become, and ultimately, the more comfortable you’ll feel talking about salary in general.

Lastly, speak to your HR department and/or look online at your company’s intranet. Many employers have become transparent in terms of sharing salary ranges for different levels and titles. You may be able to find out what your going range is.
Ace the conversation

Here’s how you want to play it when the job offer comes in:

Recruiter: “Congratulations, we have exciting news! We’d like to extend a job offer to you for the role of XYZ, starting on Monday, August 15th, with a salary of $75,000.”

Two things to remember: 1) You may be jumping up and down on the inside, but do not accept that offer on the spot! 2) This should be a friendly, collaborative conversation. Treat it as such—meaning, don’t go in ready for a fight.

You: [Pause.] “That’s great! I’m honored by the offer, thank you!”

Specific: What exactly do you want to do? Ensure that it is well defined. Have specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goals.

Measurable: This simply means that you identify exactly what you will see, hear and/or feel, when you reach those goals. It means breaking your goals down into measurable elements. Defining the objectives of your goal makes it clearer and easier to read.

Attainable: What needs to happen to achieve the goals? Are the goal achievable, considering the circumstances around you such as environment, resources, time etc.?

Realistic: There are some goals that are simply not realistic; a goal has to be something that is reasonable and can become a reality in our lives.

Time Oriented: Every goal must have a time frame attached to it. It must have an end i.e. a definite time in which it is planned to be accomplished. With no time frame attached to it, there is no sense of urgency.

How often do you get a work report or Life Report? I mean those kinds of reports that will rattle the foundation of your existence. I got one few days back. The funny thing was, I knew it was coming but because of self denial and most times laziness I didn’t do anything about it. It felt like a strong wind brushed my face when my boss landed a big one on me, she said “Williams, let me tell you something I have noticed about you. You are willing but the body is weak”. That’s all she needed to say, my mind played out the rest; my inner alarm went off and within a few seconds, It felt like I was going into a subatomic state and my whole life was flashing in front of me. Each word in that sentence landed on me like I was in the ring with Anthony Joshua of course you know who wins in that context. My inner peace was disturbed; I could feel sweat dripping down my forehead even though the Air Conditioner has been on all day. The Air conditioner couldn’t hide my sweat and that was because she told me the truth I have been avoiding to tell myself.


Remember I said I saw it coming, yeah I did. I had neglected my scorecard. After reading the 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork by John C. Maxwell. I adopted the 11th rule – The Law of the Scoreboard. It talked about having a scoreboard to track, adjust and monitor your progress. After adopting that rule I was on fire for months. Checking my scoreboard every night before going to bed. But gradually I begin to relapse till I totally stop checking. That sucker punch from Mrs Tokunbo Fasoro reminded me why I should go back to my scoreboard. The scoreboard is essential in many ways:

1. Understanding: When I adopted the 11th commandment in The 17 indisputable Law of Teamwork I understood what I needed to do on a daily basis to bring me closer to my goal. It was a reminder of what I have done, what to do next or the next action to take to achieve a desired result. Having that understanding gave me a sense of purpose which made me focus. I lost that focus when I stopped checking my scoreboard.
2. Evaluation: You need to constantly evaluate your progress at every point in time. Your scoreboard will do that perfectly. Football just like any other game has a scoreboard. You don’t have to watch the game to know how the match is going. The scoreboard gives you all the necessary information you need. If you walk into the game at stoppage time you can get all the information on how the game went on the scoreboard.
3. Decision Making: The quality of the decision we make determines the quality of our lives. Your scoreboard shows you where you are most effective and where you are lagging behind. It shows you where you need to make a drastic decision. Pin point where you need to improve or change.
4. Adjusting: Knowing when it’s time to make a decision affects how fast we are able to adjust. I consider this the hard part for me because you can go through 1 – 3 without making necessary adjustment to get you to 5. In my case, I knew what my scoreboard was like. In fact I had decided to make necessary adjustment but I never did until I got sucker punched.
5. Winning: “In the end, nobody can win without a scoreboard… John C. Maxwell”. No one can achieve anything without a plan, understanding what the plan is. Constant evaluation of the decisions you make results to the adjustment you make to achieve your goal. Therefore no one can jump from 1 to 5.
