Investment / Micro & Retail Lending: A Sea Of Untapped Opportunities by BizWatch: 8:08pm On Mar 07, 2019
A large population of over 170 million people, a cash and carry economy and tough hurdles to access financial services, all combine to provide a sea of opportunities for investors in the retail financial services sector of the Nigerian economy. Commercial banking presents stiff regulations for entry and more people are seeking alternatives to commercial banking halls and platforms.

Recent statistics from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) indicate that at least 37% of Nigeria’s population are unbanked. This means that at least 62.9 million people do not have access to financial services, even when they are very poor and require micro credit and other services to create wealth and survive.

Politics / Nigeria On The Verge Of Losing $9 Billion To UK Firm by BizWatch: 4:33pm On Jan 28, 2019
…As Firm Moves To Enforce Court Judgement
Nigeria is on the verge of losing over $9 billion owing to a ruling by a UK Arbitration Tribunal which found the Federal Government culpable of breaching an agreement it signed with a gas recycling firm, Process & Industrial Development Limited in 2010.
The plaintiff is seeking redress for the payment of $6.6 billion in damages, including a staggering $2.3 billion in accumulated interest, totaling $9 billion. The debt is a fallout of Nigeria’s alleged non-compliance with its contractual obligations under a gas supply and processing agreement it signed with P&ID.
The case is up for further hearing at a UK court on February 15, where it is expected that the plaintiff might push for the enforcement of the earlier ruling awarding judgement against the Federal Government. Should this happen, Nigeria’s foreign assets will clearly be at risk of seizure in any part of the world.

Business / 5 Profitable Business Opportunities In The 2019 Election Year by BizWatch: 2:48pm On Jan 10, 2019
“If money go before, all ways do lie open,” according to William Shakespeare, and all politicians across the globe seem to follow this simple formula, of spending money to win. In Nigeria’s 2015 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says that an estimated N1trillion was spent by INEC, political parties and candidates.

We expect that as much, if not more, money will be spent in the 2019 general elections. The number of registered voters has increased from 70million to 100million, and so has INEC budget increased to N228billion.

Secondly, the law has been amended to increase maximum spend for each candidate and officially, a presidential candidate can now spend up to N5billion, while a candidate for the National Assembly seat can spend up to 70million.

Business / How To Participate In The $350 Billion Global Furniture Industry by BizWatch: 1:06pm On Nov 30, 2018
While world production of furniture is worth a whopping $350 billion and creates huge employment opportunities and foreign exchange in developed economies, many people in Nigerian see the business as activity for the uneducated. Furniture making is left in the hands of carpenters and semi-skilled craftsmen who often churn out poorly finished products.

The Nigerian middle and upper class is expanding rapidly with a growing population of generation X and Y who are either starting a family in a new house, moving houses, or replacing old furniture. The growing economy also means businesses are opening or expanding and require furniture to meet office needs. All these leave a wide demand gap for quality products for offices and individuals, which some foreigners have been profiting from. The economy thereby loses plenty foreign exchange to foreign companies who export furniture to service the Nigerian market. Local entrepreneurs who can make or assemble quality furniture therefore have a vast market to play.

Business / Processed Starch Presents A $45m Opportunity For Entrepreneurs by BizWatch: 6:06pm On Nov 02, 2018
There are many paradoxes in the Nigerian economy which leave observers baffled. For instance, why is there so much poverty despite an abundance of resources? The country loses about $45m annually by importing starch from other countries to meet the needs of local industries.

Why this is a sad irony is because Nigeria is renowned to be the world’s largest cassava producer, with annual output of over 34 million tons of tuberous roots. And cassava is the most in-demand source of starch owing to its advantages over other close substitutes like maize, wheat, sweet potato and rice. Starch from cassava is easy to extract, has high paste viscosity, high paste clarity, and high freeze-thaw stability which many industries seek to improve the quality of their products.

Nairaland / General / 4 Smart Money Lifestyles For Nigerian Millennials by BizWatch: 8:25am On Oct 13, 2018
Without a doubt, you must have been acquainted with the word Millennial also called the Generation Y born from the 1980s up till date. They are the trail setters, they are technology savvy, they are the digital innovators, they are the fashion icons, and they are the Mark Zuckerberg, the Jessica Alba, the Debola Lagos, the JJ Omojuwa and the groundbreaking entrepreneurs of our time.

A report shows that over 91,000 businesses are registered yearly in Nigeria, but barely one percent make it through the first year. This shows that millennials are always up to something new, redefining what already exist to suit the digitally inclined generation.

Notwithstanding, it is noted that a large number of millennials end up with nothing because of their flamboyant lifestyle to keep up with the trend.

Education / Nigerian Students Express Their Readiness To Solve Africa’s Challenges by BizWatch: 7:46am On Sep 19, 2018
• InterswitchSPAK holds Masterclass for Nigerian science students
• 81 finalists emerge from National Qualifying Exams

Thursday, September 13, 2018. The InterswitchSPAK Masterclass 1.0 might have come and gone but the experience will linger on in the minds of the 81 finalists who participated in the project.

The Masterclass which was held on Monday, August 27, 2018 comprised three 45-minute sessions where top-notch speakers engaged the students in lectures on various subjects.

The students were intellectually motivated by high-profile speakers led by Mr. Mitchell Elegbe, GMD, Interswitch Group who discussed: ‘Emotional Intelligence and the Leadership Responsibility of Youths’; Mr. Yinka Sanni, CEO, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Ltd, focused on ‘Social Innovation – The Power of Transformative Ideas’ and Eloho Omame, MD, Endeavour Nigeria, on the topic ‘Entrepreneurship – A Tool to Creating Impact in Our Society’.

The students certainly had very rewarding experiences from the Interswitch Masterclass 1.0. Some of them were willing to share;
‘I have decided to study Medicine to stop politicians from travelling abroad for medical treatment’ – Rasheed Yekini, from Demonstration Standard College, Okene, Kogi State.

The word ‘medical tourism’ has become commonplace in Nigeria, no thanks to government officials and their likes travelling abroad for every little health challenge. This is the reason why Rasheed Yekini of Demonstration Standard College, Okene intends to study Medicine and Surgery.

“The other day, a former Minister fell sick and was flown abroad for treatment. Recently, the governor in my state had an accident and travelled abroad for medical attention. From the Masterclass, I learnt that I can achieve anything I want by putting my mind to it. I also learnt that people from poor homes have a better chance to see opportunities and find solutions to them”, he said.

‘The Masterclass has helped change my mind about running away from Nigeria’ – Glory Okoli, from Ambassador School, Ota, Ogun State.
Although she also dreamt of relocating abroad for greener pastures, Glory Okoli has had a shift in mindset, thanks to the inspiring sessions at the Masterclass 1.0. “When I saw people like Mitchell Elegbe and Yinka Sanni who against all odds, schooled and made it here in Nigeria, I changed my mind about ‘running away”, she said. An aspiring pediatrician, Glory wishes to study at the John Hopkins University, USA, but promises she would return home as a qualified pediatrician to help save the lives of Nigerian children who are most susceptible to diseases.

‘The Masterclass made me understand that by inventing new things, I can solve existing problems’ – Uchenna Okoro, from Incubators Academy, Kaduna.

Uchenna Okoro has always had the desire to create new things. He said: “The Masterclass made me understand that by inventing new things, I can solve existing problems and make the world a better place to live”. On why he entered for the InterswitchSPAK science competition, the aspiring Genetic Engineer sees the platform as one that will fully groom his potentials.

‘It is more beneficial when one person grows a business to employ thousands of people; than many small businesses of two, three people’ - Kosiso Ugorji, from Lagoon Secondary School, Lekki, Lagos.

The aspiring biomedical engineer has big dreams of inventing something that will revolutionize the entire medical system, beginning from her state (Imo State). However, she learnt the importance of not just starting small, but steadily growing a business to become large-scale. She said: “I really gained a lot from the session by Ms. Eloho Omame where she talked about scaling I learnt that it is important and more beneficial to the society when one person grows a business to become an employer of hundreds and thousands of people; instead of many small businesses of two, three people”.

‘My takeaway from the sessions is the need to imbibe principles, values, skills, wisdom and knowledge for a successful life’ – Asusu Cookey-Gam, from Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Rivers State.

For Asusu Cookey-Gam of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Rivers State, coming to the competition was scary but the Masterclass was interesting and impactful. He said: “I learnt how to use technology to solve societal problems.

‘I plan to create a software which will help Nigerians become more tech-savvy’ - Feyisayo Adeaga, from the Ambassador School, Ota, Ogun State.

Feyisayo Adeaga, a student of The Ambassador School, Ota, was enlightened about the need to create a solution to a societal problem during the Masterclass. Speaking on his experience, Feyisayo stated that he was ready to accept Mr. Sanni’s challenge of helping the country solve real problems to improve the lives of fellow Nigerians. “I plan to become a Software/ Computer Engineer because I realize that many people in Nigeria are technologically illiterate.”, he said.

‘Life goes beyond Physics, Chemistry and Biology; a good attitude is important’ – Oreofe Daniel, from Ambassador School, Ota, Ogun State.
For Oreofe Daniel, the Masterclass was super fun and interesting. The 15-year-old, who incidentally scored the highest marks in the InterswitchSPAK national qualifying examinations, also learnt that beyond knowing and passing Physics, Chemistry and Biology, it was important
to apply the knowledge acquired to real-life situations and to develop a good attitude to life in general.

‘I want to impact my love of Math’s on the younger generation’ – Anuoluwa Aruleba, from Ambassador School, Ota, Ogun State.
Worried about the dearth of trained teachers in Nigeria and the resultant brain drain of Nigeria’s best educators, Anuoluwa Aruleba of The Ambassador School, Ota, wants to become a Mathematics teacher. “Mathematics is my favourite subject and I want to impart my love and knowledge of Math’s on the younger generation”, she said. Her key takeaway from Mitchell Elegbe’s session of the Masterclass was that people will have expectations and perceptions about you and things around. She said: “Expectations cannot be controlled but can be managed, so try to change people’s perception instead of lowering their expectations.”

‘Creating a positive impact is more important than making money’ – Gift Ukpoweh, from ECWA Model College, Oyo.
Ukpoweh Gift is a 14-year-old student of ECWA Model College, Oyo State. Probably one of the youngest finalists, Gift’s vision in life is to become a frontline architect due to her love for drawing and a desire to improve the field of architecture. Her participation in the Masterclass further enhanced this vision as she learnt that impact should be the major reason for any venture. She said: “I learnt that in everything we want to do in life, we should have a vision. I also learnt that in any field we want to go into, we must not go there only because of profit. Creating a positive impact is more important and should be our number one goal in life. That is what I intend to do when I become an architect”.

Commendably, Interswitch has sparked off a huge ripple from this 135 minutes of mentoring at the InterswitchSPAK Masterclass. There is no doubt that the forum has changed the mindsets of the students that participated, rekindling their interest in STEM and helping them to refocus their purpose and career paths.

Indeed, the InterswitchSPAK project has all the trappings of a revolution that will hopefully change the face of STEM education in Nigeria, leading into the future.

Food / Price Of Rice Gradually Reversing To Its Old Order by BizWatch: 10:34am On Sep 11, 2018
Nigerians would need to brace up for another round of hardship, with the soaring price of rice, considered as a staple food for households in the country.

Based on feelers from industry analysts, according to the Guardian the price might escalate in few weeks to come and may last till December or beyond if urgent provisions are not made to address the challenges.

Currently, a 50kg of parboiled rice initially sold between N12, 000 and N12, 500 has risen to between N13, 000 and N14, 500, depending on the area, in the last two weeks.

Business / Scrap Iron & Aluminum Supply: A Gold Mine In Nigeria by BizWatch: 12:05pm On Sep 10, 2018
Iron mining and steel manufacturing have all but collapsed in Nigeria, so the rolling companies rely heavily on waste metal and aluminum as raw materials. This situation therefore opens up opportunities for entrepreneurs to make millions from hunting and supplying scraps.

You do not have to scavenge refuse dumps in neighborhoods and soil your hands like many young people we see rummaging through piles of waste. All you have to do is create space for a scrap yard and get the ‘metal and aluminum scavengers’ and other suppliers to dump their materials there.

The toilet is one of the most used part but least taken care of. Bathroom etiquette is essential for a healthy living space so here they are._
There are some of the things you thought you were doing right but trust me after going through this list, you’ll be surprised.

#1: Flushing The Toilet With The Lid Up

According to Charles Gerba, a microbiologist from the University of Arizona, Fecal matter and urine can fly as far as six feet away from the toilet bowl during each flush. Close the lid before you flush to keep those gross particles in your toilet and out of the air.

#2: Sitting For Too Long On The Toilet Seat

People tend to use their toilet time to books, magazines or scroll through social media. Sitting on the ceramic throne for too long can cause hemorrhoids because the seated position places a lot of pressure on the veins in your lower rectum which can swell or bulge.

Business / IQ Is Necessary But Not Sufficient For Success – Mitchell Elegbe by BizWatch: 10:08pm On Aug 29, 2018
The Group Managing Director of Interswitch Group, Mitchell Elegbe, has said that although having a high intelligence quotient (IQ) is necessary, IQ alone isn’t enough to make a headway in life.

He was speaking to the 81 finalists of the InterswitchSPAK National Science Competition during the InterswitchSPAK Masterclass 1.0, held in Lagos on Monday, August 27, 2018. Speaking on the topic ‘Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Responsibility of Youths’ during the Masterclass, Elegbe stated that emotional intelligence has become a necessity in today’s world, explaining that many people are getting more interested in the ‘softer’ skills.

He said: “Emotional Quotient or Emotional Intelligence is very necessary in today’s world. What this means is that your high scores and academic brilliance might have gotten you this far but you need a lot more than that to be successful in life. The reason is that Nigeria continues to churn out highly intelligent people every day, so the only thing that will stand you out in life is that extra quality. This is where emotional strength, which includes attitude, good character and so on, come into play.”

He admonished the students not to set expectations that are too high for themselves and others, explaining that when people fail to meet set expectations, dissatisfaction was inevitable.

Elegbe challenged the students to break out of their cocoons and strive to be the best in their chosen careers, noting that challenges create opportunities for growth, as many innovators in the world today identified problems in the society and then proffered solutions to them.

He said: “If you come from a poor home, you are in a better position to see problems that need to be solved because those challenges are always around you. So, my advice is just be focused and be the best you can be.”

Other speakers at the event were MD /CEO Stanbic IBTC Plc, Yinka Sanni, who spoke on the topic: ‘Social Innovation – The Power of Transformative Ideas’. In his presentation, Sanni noted that most of the wealthiest Nigerians made most of their money right here in the country. He said: “I hope you students will accept this challenge to generate ideas that will help the country solve real problems to improve the lives of your country men and women. This country has real problems and social innovation starts with you seeing a specific problem and finding a solution to it.”

Eloho Omame, MD Endeavor Nigeria, addressing the topic ‘Entrepreneurship – A Tool to creating Impact in Our Society’, challenged the students to start businesses that will grow and have high impact by providing employment for many people, as this was the only way to grow the economy.

Also speaking at the Masterclass was Group Product and Marketing Officer, Cherry Eromosele. She spoke about the Innovation Challenge, which is a unique session where the students are presented with everyday societal problems to which they are required to proffer solutions to using technology.

At the Innovation Challenge, the students divided into groups of nine, would be given three topics addressing problems facing Nigeria in the areas of health care, public transportation and education, especially concerning out-of-school issue. Here, the students would be expected to research and discover solutions to these problems through the knowledge and deployment of technology. Each team is mentored by two team captains who are members of staff of the Interswitch Group to guide the students. The winning team of the challenge will get the Founder’s Award.

The Masterclass was a full-day of knowledge-sharing and engagement sessions where the students were inspired by these successful people as they discussed germane topics. It was a heartwarming session for the students as they had a good time listening to the experiences of these successful individuals in our society.

InterswitchSPAK project is a CSR initiative of the Interswitch Group, a leading Pan-African electronic payment and digital commerce solutions Company. Following the Innovation Challenge is the TV quiz competition around STEM subjects for home viewers, targeted at students aged between 14 and 17 years in SS 2. The winner of the TV Quiz competition gets a whopping N7.5 million scholarship over five years in a tertiary institution. The second prize is N4.5 million in scholarship funding over three years of tertiary education while the third prize is N1.5 million scholarship for one year.

Investment / 9 Highly Profitable Franchising Opportunities In Nigeria by BizWatch: 1:07pm On Aug 27, 2018
Starting up a business from scratch is not easy but when there is already a prototype and brand to adopt, then you can hit the ground running. Buying a business franchise gives you a quantum head start, as it saves you the trouble of building a brand from scratch and acquiring customers. It also eliminates huge marketing costs, start up mistakes, and places you right in a revenue model that works.

Franchising is an arrangement where one party (the franchiser) grants another party (the franchisee) the right to use its trademark or trade-name as well as certain business systems and processes, to produce and market a good or service according to certain specifications. For instance, an entrepreneur can buy the franchise of a leading fast food restaurant making waves in Lekki, Lagos State (IJKliser) and open the same model of business in another city like Benin (IJKliser Benin outlet). The franchiser usually expects the franchisee to uphold the same standards of the business, including same branding and recipe.

Politics / Hilarious! Ngige Campaigns For Fayose At Fayemi’s Campaign Rally by BizWatch: 12:17pm On Jul 11, 2018
Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister for Labour and Employment, made a loud call for the re-election of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, in what was clearly a slip of the tongue during the All Progressives Congress (APC) mega rally in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday.

The Minister intended to put in some good words for Kayode Fayemi, the flagbearer of his party in Saturday’s governorship election in the state, but he instead repeatedly mentioned ’Fayose’ instead of ‘Fayemi’.

Sports / Thierry Henry The Double Agent, Faces Home Country In Semi-final Clash by BizWatch: 1:17pm On Jul 09, 2018
He may have been a quiet presence up to now, but the Belgium team has one man’s DNA all over it — that of Thierry Henry.

Wednesday’s semi-final promises to be a bizarre occasion for the legendary striker, one of France’s all-time greats.

Now assisting Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, Henry is plotting the downfall of his own country 20 years after he won the World Cup with France.

By all accounts Henry has been happy to remain in the shadows of Belgium’s campaign, but in the build-up to the semi-final he has unsurprisingly been pushed into the spotlight.
