Politics / “it Will Take Nigeria 70 Years To Pay Off N6.6 Trillion Debt” – Henry Boyo by busoye19: 10:28pm On Jan 15, 2013
EMOTIONS ran high, Monday, as foremost Economist, Mr Henry Boyo, lamented the country’s huge debt profile estimated at N6.6 trillion, fearing that it might take about three generations to pay the debt.

Speaking at a roundtable dialogue to mark the first anniversary of Occupy Nigeria protest with the theme: “Nigeria’s fiscal and monetary crisis: The way forward,” in Lagos, Boyo said: “It will take the Federal Government a little over 70 years to be able to repay its official debt which presently stands at N6.6 trillion.”

Boyo, who disagreed with officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over inflation rate, management of excess liquidity and other monetary policies affecting the economy, accused the CBN of not taking necessary steps to galvanise the economy.

He spoke as the apex bank countered that it was doing all within its power to regulate the economy.

Boyo listed high interest rates, depreciating naira, high rate of smuggling and capital flight, low capacity utilization, low employment and inadequate power as factors responsible for the dwindling state of the economy.

He said: “We have a total of N6.6 trillion as debt and you must know that they will be paid by our generations yet unborn. No economy can grow with these factors. All these factors I have mentioned are triggered by poor framework and responsible for the state of our economy. The CBN is also not doing anything to galvanise the economy.”

Politics / Nigerian Farmers Need Cell Phones – FG Insists by busoye19: 9:24am On Jan 15, 2013
The Federal Government on Monday insisted that despite the deluge of criticism trailing its plan to provide 10 million farmers in the country with cell phones, they actually needed the communication equipment.

The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, made the government’s position known at a news briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said despite the media war launched by those he described as detractors claiming that the Federal Government would spend N60bn on the cell phones, he would not be distracted from his resolve to “rebuild the broken walls of Nigeria’s agriculture and unlock wealth and opportunities for our farmers.”

Adesina said when he took over as agriculture minister in July 2011; he inherited a corrupt and totally inefficient fertilizer sector, where the government was spending huge amounts of money on direct procurement and distribution of subsidised fertilizers but with less than 11 per cent of the farmers getting the input.

He said a similar situation held sway in the seed sector, where middle men and rent seekers were the ones benefiting from the billions of naira spent every year by the government for subsidies.

The minister said it was clear to him at inception that there was a need to end the corrupt system, if the nation must free Nigerian farmers from the shackles of rent seekers and opportunists, who had for decades disempowered the farmers and hampered the growth of the sector.

He added that with clear directive and support from President Goodluck Jonathan, his ministry ended four decades of corruption in the fertilizer sector within 90 days of his assumption of office as minister.

This, Adesina explained, was achieved by getting subsidised high quality fertilizer and seeds to rural farmers through the introduction of the Growth Enhancement Support scheme in April 2012.

He said the GES scheme delivered inputs to farmers directly by using their cell phones.

The minister said, “In the first year of the GES scheme, 1.2 million farmers received their subsidised fertilizers and seeds via their cell phones. We expect to have reached 1.5 million farmers by the end of the dry season. Let me say that this singular effort to get inputs to farmers directly resulted in the addition of an estimated 8.1 million metric tonnes of food to the domestic food supply.”

Celebrities / Patience Jonathan Goes To Germany For Medical Checkup Again by busoye19: 9:16am On Jan 15, 2013
Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, was on Monday flown to Germany for what a Presidency source said was for a check-up.

Fears over Mrs. Jonathan’s health spread last year when she was away from the country for weeks.

She was said to be in critical condition in a German hospital.

Although she looked pale, she denied being admitted to any hospital when she finally returned on October 14, 2012.

Her husband later confirmed that she was sick but had recovered.

The President’s wife had to cancel a thanksgiving service and reception she initially planned in honour of former Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa and ex-National Security Adviser Andrew Azazi, and others, who died in a helicopter crash in Bayelsa State on December 15.

Although an online news portal, Saharareporters, reported that Mrs. Jonathan was flown out of the country, a Presidency source told our correspondent that she only travelled on Monday for a check-up.

“You will recall that since she returned last year, madam has not travelled out of the country. This trip is just for a check-up, nothing more. Any report that she had been hurriedly flown abroad is far from the truth,” the source said.

Patience attended the inter-denominational service held as part of activities marking this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja on Sunday alongside her husband and mother-in-law.

She looked healthy throughout the service.

Efforts to get her media aides for comments on the telephone were unsuccessful at press time.

Crime / 26 Year Old Computer Wiz & Co-founder Of Reddit Commits Suicide In NY Apartment. by busoye19: 8:47pm On Jan 13, 2013
Internet whiz kid and Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz, facing trial in February in a controversial computer-hacking case, committed suicide in his Brooklyn bedroom, cops said Saturday. Swartz, 26, left no note before his Friday morning death in the seventh-floor apartment at a luxury Sullivan Place building, police sources said. His girlfriend, Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, found Swartz’s body hanging from a belt just inside his bedroom window, sources said.

Swartz’s death, ruled a suicide by the city medical examiner, came two years to the day after his arrest on allegations of breaching a computer network to download millions of pages of documents kept at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His trial on federal felony charges, which carried a possible 35-year prison sentence and $1 million fine, was set to begin in February. Swartz had pleaded not guilty. Grieving family members said the federal prosecution drove Swartz to suicide.

“Aaron’s death is not simply a personal tragedy,” his family said in a statement. “It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach. Decisions made by officials in the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office and at MIT contributed to his death.”

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who could not be reached for comment, paid his respects to the Swartz family via Twitter. Other colleagues remembered Swartz’s exceptional mind. “He was brilliant, and funny,” said friend Larry Lessig, a Harvard Law professor, in a blog post. “A kid genius. A soul, a conscience.”

Health / Nigeria’s University Of Benin Unveils ‘cure’ For HIV/AIDS by busoye19: 3:58pm On Jan 08, 2013
A cure for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, AIDS, has been discovered, a Professor at the University of Benin said on Tuesday.
Isaiah Ibeh, the Dean of the School of Basic Medical Science of the University, said in Benin that the herbal drug has undergone “series of successful tests”.
“We are at the threshold of making history, in the sense that we seem to have with us something that will permanently take care of what over time seems to have defied all solutions.
“We are talking about the latest discovery of an oral drug made from plants extraction in Nigeria for the possible cure of the pandemic, HIV and AIDS virus,” he said.
Mr. Ibeh said research on the project started in 2010 and culminated in the development of “Deconcotion X (DX)–Liquid or Bioclean 11 for the cure of HIV and AIDS”.
He said that while the existing retroviral drugs are intervention drugs for the management of AIDS, the new discovery is a possible cure.
“We have tried to look at the product first; its toxicological analysis and discovered that it has a large safety margin. This means that if animals or human beings are exposed to it, they will not suffer any serious harm at all from the exposure.
“It also helped us to know the quantity we can conveniently give to animals and will feel secure that nothing untoward will happen. We have also done the bacteriological analysis on it, after which we looked at its effect on the virus and the result was quite revealing and refreshing.”
Mr. Ibeh also said that the drug had been exposed to series of medical examination both in Nigeria and in the USA.
He added that the drug had performed well on patients with the HIV virus and had shown evidence of total restoration of damaged tissues.
“The result showed an increase in the body weight of the individual administered with DX,” he said. “The body weight was statistically significant when compared with the control group.”
He said that further tests were being conducted to determine the point at which “a patient becomes negative after being administered the drug?”
“This verification is necessary because it is what is used to measure whether infection is still there or not. So we need to know the siro-convention time.
“But preliminary results showed that of the five latest patients orally administered with the drugs, our findings is that up to seven months , three of them were siro negative while two were sill faintly positive,” he said.
Mr. Ibeh appealed for support from the Federal Government and relevant bodies to assist the university with relevant equipment to sustain the research.

Politics / “fear Not. We Will Pay Up”- Okonjo Iweala by busoye19: 3:48pm On Jan 08, 2013
Earlier reports in the media appeared to suggest that a looming Fuel shortage was in the offing because oil marketers who had approached the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) for payments for product lifted, had returned empty handed because the Finance Ministry was yet to remit the recently approved sum of N161billion meant for oil subsidy payments to the apex bank.

A few marketers had been quoted as saying that they were told by the CBN that the subsidy account was virtually empty. But in a press release just made available to us from the Finance Ministry, Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala who oversees the economy has swiftly moved to refute the allegations. She noted that the sum for subsidy payments had since been made to the CBN and processes of transaction are responsible for the apparent delay.

Politics / Jonathan’s Christmas Message Draws The Ire Of His Facebook Fans by busoye19: 6:22pm On Dec 26, 2012
Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Christmas day came under immense criticism from his Facebook fans on after he posted his Christmas message on the social networking site.

The President in the message said he “personally” instructed government officials to make conditions favourable for Nigerians to celebrate the Yuletide.
The airports, he said, for instance, had been given a “facelift”, adding that the terminals were rehabilitated and the runways upgraded ahead of the festive season.
He wrote, “I want to seize this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance. I feel the pains of Nigerians and that is why this Yuletide I have personally instructed that our roads be worked on to enable you and your loved ones to travel safely for the holidays.
“Not done, we ensured that for the first time in decades, the cross country services (Lagos to Kano with stops in cities along the route) of the Nigerian Railway Corporation were revived just prior to the holidays to provide Nigerian masses with an inexpensive alternative to road and air transportation.
“This administration also took steps to increase power generation by remaining true to the Timelines of the Roadmap to Power Sector Reform, which has seen history made on Friday, December 21, when Nigeria’s power generation hit an all-time high of just over 4,500 MW.”
But no sooner had Jonathan posted the message on his wall than it was greeted with a barrage of criticisms from his friends.
While a few praised and advised the President on how to tackle the numerous problems confronting the country, many others faulted his submission.
One of the president’s fans, Kaycee Aloy-Obi wrote, “Mr. President hold your greetings. You and your family are having great celebration. A litre of petrol is sold at N110-N120, against N97 which is the official price. There is unprecedented traffic jam on Ore-Benin road due to bad roads.
“People cannot go around to visit love ones because of insecurity. Bury your head in shame with your 4,500 MW when South Africa is generating 50,000 MW. It is paradoxical that many Nigerians are having dry Christmas in midst of plenty.”
Yusuf Suleiman, asked the president to match his words with actions, adding that his “advisers are not telling you the true picture of what is happening.”
He said, “In Nigeria today, under your watch, the country recorded the highest looting of our treasury, and you didn’t do anything. We also have seen how citizens were massacred, in fact, the highest since civil war ended (and) your government is not doing enough to stop that.”
One Bethel Vincent, wrote, “Haba! Mr. President, you know say lie no good at all. Why post something we have not witnessed, yet you refer to us as friends and fellow Nigerians. As I am talking to you, my flat is running on generator; Benin-Auchi road is filled with potholes and you are talking about airport, how (many) Nigerians can afford air transport?”
Another fan, Ajoba David, wrote, “Sir, congratulations! Merry Christmas and a happy new year. What do we expect as a New Year gift come Tuesday, January 1st? Well, I hope it is not going to be another fuel subsidy razzmatazz like we experienced last year.
“Nevertheless, Nigerians have yet to recuperate from the fever that was injected into their veins last January as a result of the purportedly and verbally(sic) removal of the fuel subsidy which Nigerians have yet to see any sign of seriousness in bringing (those) culpable to book.”

Politics / Obahiagbon On The Jubilation In Kaduna Over Yakowa's Death by busoye19: 2:23pm On Dec 20, 2012
"Whilst I feel tongue tied that we are witnessing another 'air mishap' that has taken the lives of fellow Nigerians, I am utterly shocked to hear of the jubilation in certain Northern political quarters and muslim youths in Kaduna State. Just too too cruddy and it is beyond the fugacious razzmatazz of the moment.

"I seriously call attention to the rutilanting and coruscating modus vivendi of Master Jesus the Christ and I dare pontificate that save and until we viscerally emblematize the virtues of self-immolation, quintessential abnegation, eulogizeable simplicity, humility and immerse ourselves in a platonic emotionalism of agape love and communalistic service and head to unity as one nation," the Edo State law graduate stated.

Politics / Anti-corruption Network Exposes Five Properties Owned By Minister Orubebe by busoye19: 6:25am On Dec 19, 2012
An anti-corruption group led by former House of Representatives member, Dino Melaye, has revealed five properties purchased by the Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe.

The choice properties were acquired in the last three years that Mr. Orubebe has been a minister, first under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and later as one of the most powerful figures in the cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Melaye’s group revealed that a construction company, SETRACO, built and delivered a brand new mansion to Mr. Orubebe less than six months after the company received a contract to build part of the East-West highway in the Niger Delta region.
Mr. Melaye’s group obtained documents indicating that Mr. Orubebe was the owner of the properties they identified. One of the documents is the certificate of occupancy for Plot 2722, Kyami District in Abuja. The plot contains 1883.63 square meters. Another certificate of occupancy obtained by the group shows that Mr. Orubebe owns Plot 2460 in the notoriously expensive Maitama area of Abuja. In addition, the minister, who is reputed as one of the most corrupt associates of President Jonathan, also owns Plot 1736 in the Guzape area of Abuja. The certificate of occupancy for the plot was issued in 2008. The Minister for the Niger Delta also acquired Plot 2057 in the Asokoro area.
A source at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told SaharaReporters that he was not aware that the anti-corruption agency had opened any investigation into Mr. Orubebe’s land deals or other financial activities. “As far as I know, the EFCC is not investigating Elder Orubebe,” said the source, adding that the agency was unlikely to act “unless the Presidency specifically orders us to go after him.

Family / He’s A Terrorist – Enraged Nigerian Woman Lied Against Her Husband. by busoye19: 3:45pm On Dec 17, 2012
Okieze Ukaegbu, 58, seized at airport gate after wife, Eunice Ukaegbu, 50, told authorities that he was a terrorist

Husband released after interrogation and allowed to board later flight

A New Jersey man was grabbed by police at Newark Airport yesterday after police were tipped off that he planned to ‘blow up’ a Delta Airlines flight to Paris.

But authorities now believe that the information, that came from the suspect’s wife, was a false accusation following nothing more than a domestic dispute.

The New York Post reports that Eunice Ukaegbu, 50, rang police on Okieze Ukaegbu, 58, because the couple had just had a big fight and she didn’t want him to leave the country without her.

Eunice told the Post that she just thought she was just acting on her civic duty. ‘He told me he was going to blow up the airplane. I did what an honest citizen would do,’ she said.
The NJ nurse claims her husband ‘is a little secretive.’ Her story is that she first became concerned as Okieze had been acting distantly.

When she couldn’t open his suitcase, Eunice felt she had to warn authorities. Police and federal agents rushed to the Ukaegbu family home in Union, New Jersey, to question the possible ‘terrorist.’

Luckily for Okieze, the couple’s daughter overheard the incident and rang her father to tell him that police were on the way to apprehend him at Newark Airport.
Okieze had already passed through security and was waiting for a Delta flight to Paris, the first leg of his trip to Nigeria.

He remained at Gate B45 until authorities arrived, then calmly told them that his wife was lying and had an ‘alcohol problem.’

Police took Okieze in for questioning, pulled his luggage off the plane and checked it with bomb detection dogs.

This caused the man to miss his flight but sources at the Post claim other travelers did not experience significant delay.

After interrogation and searches, Okieze was released and cleared to take a later Delta service to Paris.

While his wife claims she contacted police out of genuine concern, they don’t believe her story. Authorities now say they plan to charge Eunice Ukaegbu.

‘It looks like that marriage went up in flames,’ a police source told the Post.

Jobs/Vacancies / 800,000 Jostle For 1,500 INEC Jobs - Phd Holders Seek Graduate Slots by busoye19: 7:54am On Dec 14, 2012
About 800,000 graduates have submitted applications to the Independent National Electoral Commission seeking to be employed to fill only 1,500 available job slots in the commission, competent sources told Daily Trust in Abuja. INEC placed vacancy advertisements in newspapers on November 19, inviting applications for the positions of legal officers, system analysts, architects, engineers, estate officers and registration area officers on grade levels 07, 08 and 09.
Only applicants with first degrees, Higher National Diplomas and National Certificate of Education (NCE) were invited to submit applications, but an official at the commission told Daily Trust that a number of PhD and master’s degree holders also applied.

The official said INEC was alarmed by the huge inflow of applications into its website, as well as the calibre of applicants, some of whom are clearly “over qualified” for the jobs they applied for.

“In the first week alone, we had about 300,000 applications. We were alarmed,” the official said.

“In fact there are PhD holders among the applicants; some of them have two master’s degrees. That is a reflection of the job situation in the country.”

He also disclosed that INEC contracted the recruitment exercise to a consultant, NEXIR, which is expected to sort out the applications and invite only 8,000 applicants for examination. That translates into just 1,000 out of every 100,000 applicants.

From the 8,000 who sit for the examinations, the consultant has been mandated to recommend 3,000 candidates to the commission which will then select 1,500 out of the number to fill the available vacancies.

When asked to give details of what number applied for each position, the source said he could not because everything had been turned to the consultant to commence sorting out the applications.

“The IT department has collated all the applications (which were submitted online) and handed them to the consultant. And I am sure that some, especially those with PhD and master’s degrees, will be screened out because they are over qualified. Don’t forget that the positions advertised are entry points into the civil service,” he said.

Daily Trust also learnt that the recruitment is expected to be concluded this month because it is captured in the 2012 budget.

“The recruitment was captured in the 2012 budget so it has to be concluded this December,” the source said, adding that the commission will consult the Federal Character Commission and the Presidency before the final recruitment.

Politics / Is There Any State Called Ekiti In Nigeria? by busoye19: 10:14pm On Dec 09, 2012
Is there any State called Ekiti in Nigeria? If there is, I doubt if President Jonathan and his cabinet members know it. What played out on Wednesday (5th December, 2012) at the budget defence by the Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) before the Senate Committee of Works called to question the knowledge of President Jonathan and his cabinet members about States and their capitals in Nigeria. States and capitals are one of those things pupils are taught and as one grows up, it naturally sticks without having to stand up and recite them to mum and dad at home or the teacher at school. However, the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, seemed to forget his States and Capitals and needed to be nudged by the Senate Committee of Works.

Just as it is done every year when ministries, departments and agencies of government come before the federal legislature to defend their budgets, the Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency took the stage before the Senate Committee of Works on Wednesday, but what played out was nauseous, so much so that one begins to wonder whether President Jonathan knows there is any State called Ekiti in Nigeria, or probably the President and his cabinet cannot draw a line between governance and politics. It could also be that there is a sinister plot to intentionally under-develop Ekiti State which his party, the PDP, lost at the Appeal Court.

Although events since that loss at the appellate court have shown the President and his party members as bad losers, trying fruitlessly to discredit Justice Ayo Salami and smear the judiciary, the events of Wednesday at the Senate dwarfed the earlier ones.

In the Federal Ministry of Works budget for 2013, Ekiti has the least number of roads to be constructed. While some States were “lucky” to get 25, 15 and 10 respectively, only 4 were listed for the Land of Honour and all 4 are fake. The four “roads” to be constructed in Ekiti are Ogbomoso/Oko-Ologbo/Osogbo road (Osun), Ikorodu/Imota road (Lagos), Ido Ani/Idogun/Imeri/Ayegunle road (Ondo) and Lafia/Doma road (Nassarawa). These are the roads the Honourable Minister Mike Onolememen listed as roads to be constructed in Ekiti State. Unfortunately, none of these roads are in Ekiti. They are probably drain-pipes, like the subsidy malaise.

This is not a first. Year in year out similar frauds have been perpetrated in the name of Ekiti State. Even when projects are undertaken in Ekiti, it is either they are underfunded or not funded at all. This year for instance, critical roads in the State were listed for repairs in the FERMA budget, but what is on ground is a far cry from what is on paper. N280 million was budgeted for the repairs of critical failed sections of Akure/Ado and Ekiti/Omuaran roads, but only N83million was released. Maintenance repairs of Ifaki/Ikole, Omuo/Oyin/Ondo roads should have gulped N386million, but only N57 million made it out of government coffers. N334 million was budgeted for the general maintenance, repairs and pavement strengthening of Ado/Aramoko/Itawure/Osun border roads, but like the others, N50 million was released. Also, N25 million was budgeted for the special repairs of critical sessions along Ado/Ikere/Ondo State border road;nothing was, however, released. The special repairs of critical sessions along Ifaki/Odo road should have gulped N24 million; also, nothing was released.

Had Senator Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central), who is a member of the Senate Committee of Works, not raised objections to the fake roads listed in the name of Ekiti State in the 2013 budget, it would probably have been the same old song.

If this is the type of people who surround Jonathan, what is the fate of Nigeria, or probably the Southwest?

Were it not for the intervention of the Vice Chairman of the Works Committee, Senator Mohammed Bashir Garba, who chaired the session, it could probably have become uglier. The Vice Chairman ended the open session and directed that it go into a close session where the Minster of Works allegedly apologised and promised to correct the fraud they could have committed in the name of Ekiti State.

Onolememen and his ministry are not the only ones involved in this deliberate attempt to consign Ekiti to the background, there are others. Sometimes, I wonder if Caleb Olubolade (Jonathan’s Police Affairs Minister, who some say is interested in the governorship seat of the State) is from Ekiti. Is this the kind of records he intends brandishing on his CV to garner votes of Ekiti indigenes come 2014?

Like I earlier said, the deliberate marginalisation of Ekiti State goes beyond the Ministry of Works. Stories abound of how indigenes of other Yoruba-speaking States are tutored to claim Ekiti in the recruitment into the armed forces. Some of these impostors allegedly became army generals.

Recently, I drew the attention of Nigerians to the anomalies in the Federal Civil Service recruitment. While 2, 230 were shortlisted from Benue State, 1, 600 from Anambra, 1, 300 from Edo, out of the 1, 500 who applied from Ekiti, only 199 were shortlisted.

With events like these, one wonders whether Nigeria belongs to us all and if Ekiti is indeed part of Nigeria. Even if federal character is no longer in effect, the qualification of Ekiti indigenes for these jobs can never be in doubt. What then is the problem? What I think is that there is a deliberate effort by Goodluck Jonathan administration to sideline Ekiti. For whatever offence, I don’t know.

One is also tempted to ask whether President Jonathan has launched a battle against the Southwest, as the Southwest, with its deadly pothole-adorned roads, has the least number of roads to be constructed and repaired in the 2013 budget. Is there more to this anomaly? Is it a war between the PDP and the ACN, or rather between Jonathan and Tinubu and recently, between Jonathan and Obasanjo? If so, should the ordinary Southwest people who ply these roads suffer for what they know not?

I think these are the questions Goodluck Jonathan and his cabinet members should answer. These are the questions all Ekiti and Southwest people should ask him and his cabinet. Senator Babafemi Ojudu has unmasked the masquerade; other Ekiti federal lawmakers should follow suit in their respective committees. This way, crooks in government will stop using the name of Ekiti as a drainpipe.

Education / WAEC To Release Nov/dec Results In Two Weeks by busoye19: 10:51am On Dec 08, 2012
Deputy Director, Public Affairs, West African Examination Council (WAEC), Mr Yusuf Ari, had disclosed on Friday that the 2012 Nov./Dec. Senior School Certificate Examination result would be out in two weeks after the Examination had been concluded.

Ari made this disclosure during an interview in Lagos.

He said that the examination body had reiterated its commitment towards ensuring that the results were released as promised by the Examination council.

The Deputy Director said “I want to express satisfaction at the conduct of this year’s examination. We had finished the marking exercise for the Nov./Dec. SSCE for private candidates since Nov.

“The entire process of conducting and collating was quite impressive because there were no negative reports from any of the centres nationwide.

“We used limited logistics, and this to a great extent relaxed the pressure we normally had during the May/June examination, “ he said.

Ari, had also warned the candidates and other concerned individuals to watch out for criminal activities around the examination offices, calling on government and individuals to assist in fighting against the activities of touts.

“We all need to join hands in fighting these fraudsters who stay around our offices, looking for innocent people they would mislead by issuing fake certificates.

“We have made a lot of efforts to sensitise the public concerning the activities of these people, but still wonder why many people still go to them for transactions.

“Candidates and other stakeholders have been told over time not to transact any form of business with anybody outside our perimeter fence.

“They should walk in straight to our offices and they would be provided with the correct information.

“We do this to prevent them from losing so much in the bid of trying to get their certificates and other relevant information that could determine their future, “ he said.

Speaking further on the need to collectively fight the menace of touts, he said “I think we should all join hands in intensifying efforts to rid the system of these set of people.

“We should also embark on this continually in other to prevent the heartache their activities usually cause the victims, “ Ari had avowed.

Religion / Mother Sets Son Ablaze For Failing To Learn The Koran by busoye19: 10:40am On Dec 06, 2012
This is the mother who murdered her young son then set him on fire when he struggled to learn the Koran off by heart.

Sara Ege, 32, leaves court today preparing to face life imprisonment after being found guilty of murder.

Ege, 32, used a stick to beat her seven-year-old son Yaseen ‘like a dog’ when he couldn’t recite passages from the Islamic holy book.

A court heard the beatings were so brutal he died from his injuries and his mother tried to burn the body to destroy the evidence.
Fun-loving Yaseen was originally thought to have died in a tragic accident in the house fire.

But a post mortem examination showed Ege had been beating and abusing her little boy in the months leading up to his murder.

Prosecutor Ian Murphy said: ‘When the smoke had cleared it emerged that Yaseen was dead before the fire had started.

‘He had suffered significant abdominal injuries that were the cause of his death.

‘There were multiple injuries including fractures which were non-accidental.

‘Sara Ege made no attempt to seek the medical attention he so obviously needed.

‘He clearly suffered terribly. She started the fire to hide what she had done.’

In a police interview Ege told officers she was trying to teach her son the Koran but he was not very good.

University graduate Ege said: ‘I was getting more and more frustrated, if he didn’t read it properly I would be very angry – I would hit him.

‘We had a high target, I wanted him to learn 35 pages in three months. I promised him a new bike if he could do it.

‘But Yaseen wasn’t very good – after a year of practice he had only learned a chapter.’

Cardiff Crown Court heard Ege and her taxi driver husband Yousef, 38, had enrolled Yaseen in advanced classes at their local mosque.
They wanted him to become Hafiz – an Islamic term for someone who memorises the Koran.

Ege told the court: ‘Memorising the whole of Koran is a great reward for the whole family.

‘It brings honour and increases the standing of the whole family in the local community.’

But mischievous Yaseen preferred to play with his friends and got behind with his studies.

The schoolboy was coming to the end of a three-month trial period at the mosque and Ege was keen for him to impress his Imam.

The court heard Ege become more and more frustrated with her son’s inability to learn the passages he needed to.

She told officers: ‘I was getting all this bad stuff in my head, like I couldn’t concentrate, I was getting angry too much, I would shout at Yaseen all the time.

‘I was getting very wild and I hit Yaseen with a stick on his back like a dog.

‘He would be doing his work and wouldn’t complain and I would hit and hit him more and more.

‘He was a good boy but I used to get angry and he wouldn’t even stop me or say anything to anyone.’

The court was told how Ege would hit Yaseen with a stick, a hammer, a rolling pin and a slipper as well as repeatedly punching him.
In the months after Yaseen’s death Ege told her GP she had been told to kill him by Shaitan – an Islamic name for the devil.

She said: ‘It is Shaitan – it is the devil which is telling me to do all these bad things.

‘I have become so harsh, I even killed my own son.’

Ege told her doctor she felt ’100 per cent better’ after her seven-year-old son died.

Notes kept by her GP record her as saying: ‘It is like something has been released. For three or four months I have not been normal.

‘Voices told me to hit Yaseen and then hit him more and more.’

Police and the fire service were called to the family’s home in Pontcanna, Cardiff, in July 2010 after a blaze ripped through the top floor.

Yaseen was pulled from the blaze by firefighters who fought to revive the schoolboy.

At first Yaseen’s death in the fire was treated as a tragic accident.

But a post mortem examination discovered Yaseen was dead before the blaze began.

Pathologists found multiple injuries on Yaseen’s body including broken ribs, a fractured arm and a fractured finger.

Barbecue lighter fuel was found on Ege’s clothing when she was arrested after the post mortem examination.

Ege initially denied murdering Yaseen and burning his body to hide what she had done.

Later she said she burned her son’s body after discovering he had died in the house and panicked.

Her story changed again when she admitted beating little Yaseen in the months leading up to his death and burning his body to hide the injuries.

But Ege finally retracted all her previous confessions and told police they had all been lies.

She said her husband and his family had threatened to kill her and her family is she didn’t take the blame for her son’s death.

Her husband denied causing or allowing the death of a child by not stopping his wife’s beatings of Yaseen.

The five-week trial heard Mr Ege would drive Yaseen to mosque for his Koran practice before and after school.

He said he had never seen his wife raise a hand against Yaseen and that she was a ‘perfect mother’.

He told police: ‘The last time I saw my son he looked fine.

‘He was very happy and had written out a list of things he was going to do in the summer holidays.’

Her husband was cleared of causing or allowing the death of a child by failing to protect him.

The jury returned unanimous verdicts after eight hours of deliberation.

As the verdict was read out Ege broke down in the dock, holding her head in her hands and crying.

Her husband showed no emotion as he walked free from court.

Ege’s parents, who had travelled from Hyderabad in India, sat in the public gallery quietly as the jury returned.

Judge Justice Wyn Williams told Ege she faces a term of life imprisonment.

But he said he would determine a minimum sentence in the New Year after a medical report had been completed.

Sara Ege remains in medical custody at the Llanarth Court Hospital in Gwent, South Wales.

Business / Agege Bread Takes London By Surprise by busoye19: 10:29am On Dec 06, 2012
The entrepreneurial savvy of the average Nigerian is not to be taken for a joke or trifled with. When our correspondent came across an Agege Bread shop in London, he was stuck in disbelief. Undoubtedly Agege Bread has infiltrated the cosmopolitan city of London.

Agege Bread is a loaf of bread made popular by the bakers from the same Lagos suburb that make the bread. Millions of Lagosians are familiar with the delicacy and have it as a regular part of their balanced diet.

Now some savvy entrepreneur has taken the concept to London, England and is making a small fortune baking and delivering Nigerian styled loaves to lovers of baked products in the Queen’s own country.

One noticeable difference about the difference in the London made Agege bread is the packaging is more professional and appealing than the locally made version. However that is simply a testament to the enabling environment that a country like Great Britain affords its citizens and migrants.

According to the website of the company, “The idea of providing home away from home in England for an average Nigerian in diaspora, to enjoy quality and home taste Nigerian conventional food at the lowest possible price, was our aim that gave birth to London Agege bread. In 2005 from the East end of London, the dream was born and has since spread across the UK and Europe. From a dream, it has grown to become a household name all over London, Northern Ireland and Europe, a corporate brand and a quality standard in the bakery/confectionery industry in England offering quality, comfort and home taste satisfaction in diaspora for Nigerians and Europeans also other Africans individuals, groups, churches, mosques and other corporate organisations.”

At its South East London, Deptford Street address, diners can not only buy bread, they can choose from a plethora of other soulful dishes that immediately transport the diner mentally to a Bukka in Nigeria.

Politics / Sack Yourself First, Labour Tells Okonjo-iweala by busoye19: 9:12am On Dec 06, 2012
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has said that the Minister of Finance and coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala should sack herself first before talking about sacking civil servants.

Recently CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi also called for the sack of about 50 percent of the civil servants because 70 percent of the nation’s resources are consumed by them.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu in his reaction said that there was no plan to sack workers and added that government is doing everything to generate more jobs for the teeming youths in the country.

However, the  Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Nkonjo-Iweala was on Monday quoted to have said that there was no going back on the planned mass sack of civil servants.

While reacting to the statement attributed to Iweala, Chairperson of TUC in FCT, Comrade Abdul Hakeem told LEADERSHIP that, “we will mobilise our members to resist such plans because sacking workers cannot improve the economy as envisaged by agents of death”.

Comrade Abdul said that it was unfortunate that government was talking about sacking workers when there was growing insecurity which was as a result of youth unemployment and poverty.

He said that such comments show a high level of insensitivity on the part government.

“The Minister should first sack herself because whenever they need money to waste, they will remember civil servants are too much. The President at the beginning of the year said he would cut down the salary of political office holders and number of personnel going on overseas trip but nothing was done in that regard.

Business / Dangote Cement To Shut Gboko Plant by busoye19: 8:03am On Dec 06, 2012
Management of Dangote Cement Plc on Wednesday concluded arrangement to temporarily close down its four million metric tonnes per annum Gboko plant, as a result of glut in the cement market.

A statement by the Group Head, Corporate Communication for Dangote Group, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, stated this in Lagos.

He said the move was necessitated by the glut in the market, which arose from the success presently being recorded with the exponential increase in local production of cement and further compounded by continued importation of subsidised cement into the country.

He said that the production figure for the first 11 months of the year showed increased local production level with supply now surpassing demand.

Total supply of cement to the market at the end of November, according to him, when compared to the same period last year, has shown a record increase of 11.4 per cent, the highest ever.

He said it was, therefore, disheartening to note that despite the glut in the local cement market, cement importation had continued, although at a reduced rate. According to him, this calls to question the rigorous implementation of the backward integration policy introduced to encourage local production.

Giving reasons for the choice of BCC for a temporary shutdown, the Dangote Group image maker said, “With the dumping of subsidised imported cement in the South Eastern market, there is no way our Gboko Cement plant can survive. In fact, employees have been put on forced leave, pending when the situation improves.”

Politics / The Enemy Within: Jaji Bombs Were Made Inside The Barracks by busoye19: 5:43pm On Dec 04, 2012
Eight days after the bombing of the church inside the Jaji military formation in Kaduna State, Daily Sun learnt that the bombs used in the act might have actually been manufactured within the quarters.

This new lead came just as the Board of Inquiry (BoI) set up by military authorities to investigate the bombing commenced work. “There is high possibility that the terrorists actually manufactured the Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) right inside the massive cantonment”, a source confided.

While the Jaji ugly drama unfolds, security agencies have continued to comb and demolish suspected hideouts for terrorists in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

There are also indications that the investigation of the attack by Boko Haram of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) headquarters in Abuja is raising another unprecedented controversy within the force high command.

Nonetheless, there seemed to be no let down in activities of the terror group as suspected gunmen went on rampage at border post in northeaster Nigeria, setting ablaze churches and border posts.

But in Azare township of Bauchi State, an intense fight between the terrorists and security agents has led to the death of a soldier and several civilians.

In respect of the Jaji incident, Daily Sun got facts that some confessional statements of the arrested soldiers indicatesd that the suicide bombers might have been residents in the large cantonment and actually manufactured the IED right inside the barrack, thereby making it easier for them to have driven straight to the church without being detected.

The initial theories on the blast suggested that the bombers might have infiltrated the barracks through the back borders said to be very porous

The source also said preliminary investigation showed that it was possible the explosives were assembled on the day of attack, reason the attackers came a little after the church dismissed.

The source said that but for some of the members who ran back to the church on hearing the first blast, the casualty figure would have been less before the second bomb planted in a car at the parking lot went off.

The aim of the terrorists according to the source, was to wipe out the entire congregation with the hope that while the first blast would kill members right inside the church, the second would take care of those trying to run out of the church.

Education / “Face Your Book And Desist From Facebook” – VC Tells Students by busoye19: 5:30pm On Dec 04, 2012
Prof. Olusola Oyewole, Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has advised students to stop wasting their time on social networks, especially facebook at the expense of their studies.

The VC disclosed this through the former Head of Department of General Studies and Communication, Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale, at a seminar tagged: Role Modeling Lecture for the Girl-Child, organised by a Ph.D student and 2010 Award Fellow, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlolu-Akinyemi, Oyewole and sponsored by African Women in Agricultural Research and Development.

He said, “Facebook and other social networks are good, but I will advise you to leave Facebook and face your studies.”

Mrs Oyewole advised female students to desist from procrastination and to understand the importance of time than money.

She however tasked them to learn how to politely and constructively say ‘no’ adding that they should judge each day by the seeds sown and not by the harvest reaped.

“You know yourself more than anyone else, so desist from comparing yourselves with others,”she concluded.

The institution’s Councillor, Mrs Modesta Ofodile, said students should always use some of their free time as private periods to study, adding that those periods could also be used to refresh and renew their energy.

Ofodile however, advised the students to manage their time well, saying that “if you waste your time thinking there is time, examinations will catch you unawares.”

She noted that serious-minded students rarely get into trouble.

Furthermore, the Head of Department, Food Service and Tourism, Dr. A.M in her lecture informed students about availability of scholarship opportunities they can benefit

Politics / Obasanjo’s Call For Revolution by busoye19: 6:31pm On Dec 01, 2012
President Olusegun Obasanjo shocked his audience by openly calling for a revolution in Nigeria.

Also, it will be recalled that the former President called Nigerians to come out en masse for a Nigerian type “Arab spring (revolution)” during a workshop on economic diversification and revenue generation in December 2011 at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo’s call was hinged on the prevailing high rate of youth unemployment, which he estimated to be about 72 per cent. If the audience in Dakar was shocked, then the residents of Warri in Delta State were utterly astonished when he commented on President Goodluck Jonathan’s handling of the crisis in the North.

Most Nigerians are unable to understand why and how a former President could incite the people to the path of revolution as a measure to check unemployment.

They become jittery when such comments come from a retired Army general of the calibre and stature of Obasanjo. His insistence on a revolution has become an unpalatable cliché that Nigerians must decipher.

Obasanjo’s statements are more unsettling because he has unrestrained access to Aso Rock to advise and even brief Jonathan on such issues relating to national security.

Also, he has the opportunity to meet Jonathan one-on-one during their monthly National Council of State meetings in Aso Rock. And so why does the former President rage and attempt to pull down what he has helped in building?

Like all human beings, the former President has his own shortcomings. The most prominent of these is his pay-back mentality for any request scorned or denied.

He believes so much in the myth that he is a superhero. As Nigeria’s patron saint, he believes that he is the best President this country ever had.

Today, Obasanjo’s call for a Nigerian type Arab Spring has revealed his short-sightedness.

The Arab Spring or Arab Uprising started in Tunisia on December 18, 2010 when a Tunisian unemployed graduate Mohamed Bouazizi set himself ablaze to protest police corruption and brutality.

The ensuing protest spread throughout Tunisia with increased violence. The result was that the then Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was forced to flee to Saudi Arabia on January 14, 2011.

The protests spread through North Africa and the Gulf States engulfing Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria. Echoes of the Arab Spring resounded in Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Djibouti, et cetera.

Today the dregs of the Arab Spring are yet to settle. President Hosni Mubarak was forced to flee on February 11, 2011. And till date, Egypt does not have a stable government as Tahrir Square has become a symbol of the peoples’ solidarity.

Even with the democratic election of President Mohammed Morsy of the Moslem Brotherhood, Egypt is as unstable as an ancient blackboard standing on three legs, with the hind leg broken off.

Obasanjo’s call for a revolution because of youth unemployment is misplaced. People like him should not pray for a revolution, not even for their children because revolutions are cataclysmic, destructive and unpredictable. The no-nonsense former President needs some tutorial on revolutions.

In his recent role as the moderator for Bishop Ayo Oritsejafor’s 40th anniversary on the pulpit, he lambasted President Goodluck Jonathan’s weak response to the Boko Haram crisis.

Obasanjo flaunted his genocidal and criminal demolition of Odi in Bayelsa State,  where unidentified militants killed 19 soldiers. Some day, he will appear at the War Crime Tribunal at the Hague to answer for heinous crimes against the residents of Odi.

The former President speaks of unemployment, but he has forgotten that he laid a solid foundation for this by wasting $16bn on electricity generation without any impact on Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution.

At the time he handed over to  the late Umaru Yar’Adua, Nigeria’s electricity megawatts  was a paltry 2000 for a population of 140 million people while South Africa boasts 50,0000 megawatts for its 45million people.

Industries started folding up and relocating to Ghana during Obasanjo’s government with hundreds of thousands of workers thrown into the unemployment market. He built a personal library in Abeokuta worth N7bn and coerced Nigeria’s richest businessmen, some of who are his business partners, to bank-roll the project which he cunningly named the Presidential Library Project.

What more can we mention now? Is it the pauperisation of Nigerians due to the increase in the price of commodity items like rice, sugar, cement, flour and noodles, which were licensed to only one man to import, or the quarterly increase in the price of petroleum products?

God save Nigeria.

Health / Taraba Governor Danbaba Suntai Reportedly Brain-damaged. by busoye19: 10:20am On Dec 01, 2012
Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State, who was seriously injured when his plane crashed on October 25 in Yola, capital of Adamawa State, has reportedly suffered extensive brain damage and even failed to recognize members of a presidential delegation that visited him at a hospital in Hanover, Germany, an authoritative source has told SaharaReporters.
A source close to a senior member of the delegation which was led by Senate President, David Mark, included Governor Ibrahim Yakowa of Kaduna State, President Goodluck Jonathan’s chief of staff, Mike Oghiadomhe, also on the delegation was John Kennedy Opara, the secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) and the Chaplain of the Presidential Villa Chapel, Venerable Obioma Onwuzurumba, described the trip to see Mr. Suntai as highly secretive. SaharaReporters learnt that members of the delegation had officially traveled to Vatican City in Rome to witness the consecration of Archbishop John Onaiyekan as a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. After the ceremony in Italy, the delegation then made a quick detour to Germany to see the injured Mr. Suntai.
Our source said members of the delegation were shocked to see Mr. Suntai in a vegetative state. “His condition was so bad that they could not publicly disclose his condition after they returned to Nigeria,” said the source.
Since Mr. Suntai’s airlift to Germany, officials of the Taraba State government have engaged in propaganda, claiming that the governor was making remarkable recovery. But our sources, including an official of the state government, admitted that Mr. Suntai’s mental faculty had deteriorated since the accident and that his memory was virtually impaired.
“It is possible that he suffered brain damage because there was some delay before he could be taken abroad,” said a state official.
A Taraba-born political activist who is based in Abuja, has likened the present hide and seek game on the status of the Taraba state governor to the days of late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua when his true state of health was concealed from Nigerians in order to prevent his vice, Goodluck Jonathan from being sworn-in as acting president.
According to him: “We all know how President Umaru Yar’Adua’s people continued to deceive Nigerians that the man was recovering well and how they even brought him back in a comatose state and declared that he was in control of Nigeria,” said the activist. He added: “I hope President Jonathan and the PDP are not planning a similar scenario whereby they will declare that Governor Suntai is in control – until they find a malleable successor who suits them.
“The fact that the people of Taraba have not heard from or seen the governor since the air crash on October 25 2012 means that the man is no longer fit to govern them,” he said.

Politics / Jonathan; Citizenship Must Replace State Of Origin by busoye19: 8:14pm On Nov 30, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that it is time for Nigeria to ”dismantle the idol of exclusivity” and discard issues that focus on state of origin rather citizens of nation and this change will be carried out with the ongoing review of the nation’s constitution.

Delivering the President’s remark at the 13th Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe lecture which focused on developing ethnic policy for national integration to address the issue of indigenes versus settlers, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Prof Viola Adaku Onwuliri, who represented Dr. Jonathan stated emphatically that “things just have to change.”

”In the plan for nation building, the joy for all patriots is for all citizens to enjoy the rights of citizenship” the President stated, as he acknowledged that ”there is a dangerous growth of indigeneship versus settlership crises” and ”these are enemies of Nigeria which we must aggressively not tolerate” he added.

”There is hardly any ethnic group in Nigeria which does not have a sizeable amount of its people residing outside of their ethnic communities” the President noted as he explained how is his native Ijaw tribe (whom he claimed are predominantly fish eaters) have been taught how to eat and source fresh beef by Fulani herdsmen that have settled in their communities.

”This strong cosmopolitan is the future of Nigeria” the President affirmed as he declared that ethnicity must give way to citizenship as granted by rights of the Nigerian Constitution, and this I will defend with all my power as President” he declared.

“We should glory in our diversity because it is our strength” the President added.

He also admitted the fears of communities that, they might be swamped by others but he explained that every effort will be made to ensure that their culture is preserved and that “where the laws are ambiguous, we will address that with the ongoing review constitution.”

This is coming as hundreds of lives are lost and property destroyed in recent inter-communal clashes in cities and states across the country such as Plateau, Benue, Nassarawa and Lagos.
