History Tuesday:10 things that were different in the 80s

There are so many awesome things about the world we live in today; the incredible access to information, the innovations in technology, and the way we can communicate to anyone, anywhere in the world. Now is an awesome time to be alive, but, you know, the 80s had something to offer too, even if some of us will not take money to go back and live in that time. However, let’s take a look at the following…

3 Expert Reasons Why Your Business Should Have a Plan

https://insidify.com/discovery/going-with-the-wind-stop-your-business-should-have-a-plan

To start a business, you must have at least a business idea. That’s what makes an entrepreneur. While some entrepreneurs are however only concerned with starting a business and making some money, some are about building their businesses into global brands.

Really successful businesses thrive on a lot of things, but one of them is definitely preparing a good business plan at the start of the business. So if you are an entrepreneur looking forward to building a global brand, here are three reasons why you should have a business plan.

Asking Africa’s Premiere Wealth Coach, Mrs Omilola Oshikoya about the importance of having a business plan, she replied with the popular business quote “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” According to her, it is important as with anything in life to create a business plan as a prospective entrepreneur. In some cases however, you can start your business while you are working on the business plan.

This means that while you may start preparing your plan from the inception of your business idea, you don’t have to delay starting until the plan is ready. Whenever you decide, the most important thing is to have a plan. Below are three reasons why:

3 Everyday Words That Make You Sound Pretty Rude in Emails

https://insidify.com/discovery/3-everyday-words-that-make-you-sound-pretty-rude-in-emails
Every now and again, we type away on our computers/phones trying to get a message across through our emails. What we fail to do sometimes is check if our words convey the right message or not. This article sheds light on what to be done to avoid misinterpretation.

In one week, I’ve dramatically improved my professional communication skills.

Yes, I know, that’s a big claim—but it’s true. And the best part is that the changes I made were simple. I cut three words from my vocabulary: “actually,” “sorry,” and “me.”

1. Actually

My inspiration for getting rid of “actually” was Carolyn Kopprasch, Chief Happiness Officer at Buffer, who wrote a great blog post on the word.

Turns out that when I use “actually,” it’s usually because I’m correcting someone. The proof is in a recent email I sent to my editor.

Erin: That wording felt a little misleading, so I changed it.

Me: Actually, I pulled that sentence from the [company] website!

It’s not an awful response, but a better one would’ve been:

Thanks for your feedback! I used that sentence because I found it on their site.

The second communicates the same info while sounding more respectful and friendly.

“Actually” Alternatives: Definitely, got it, I see, great point, makes sense, understandable

2. Sorry

I try to stay away from saying ”sorry” in situations that don’t merit it: when I make.....

History Tuesday: 8 Times Fela Anikulapo Kuti Gave Us Useful Insights On Living

Today, (2nd of August) in 1997, the legendary musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who was a multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the afrobeat music genre, human rights activist and political maverick, died at the age of 58. The following are quotes from the legend that convey important lessons that we sometimes dismiss with a wave of the hand but are definitely worth adhering to.

“My people are scared of the air around them, they always have an excuse not to fight for freedom”

There’s a saying that goes “if you ever find yourself in the wrong story, leave”.

This is an exclusive power that every individual has over themselves. We have the right to disagree with certain developments as we deem fit.

Who do you think should win The Voice Nigeria 2016?

I have a confession and it will shock you!

No offences intended but it’s because of my belief –

It’s allowed to follow, imitate but NEVER Xerox

You know what I mean by ‘Xeroxing’, yeah?

Here’s more to it:

When Africa Magic announced that The Voice (the reality singing competition that started as The Voice of Holland) was coming to Nigeria (3rd of March, 2015), I was like, ‘whaaaaaat? How will the Westerners ever respect us when all we do is IMPORT?’ When will we start exporting our own … like Ten Ten, Tales by Moonlight etc.?

You know by now that the list includes toothpick and the legendary HB Pencil.

That’s a story for another day.

Cut the long story short, here I am 4 months later after the competition began its Blind Auditions, writing about who I think will emerge winner.

Oh Me!

But, you’d agree, regardless of whatever name any host decides to call it, Nigeria’s Got Talent!

In a few more sentences, I’ll tell you who would get my vote and who I believe would win and of course, I’ll tell you why.

These 5 Apps Will Make Work Easy For You

If you are not reading this from a computer screen, then I am assuming that you have a smart phone. For that reason, I’d say congratulations. Why? Just as my friend’s mum has insisted that there will be no blender in their house because using the local grinding stone, aka omo-ilota makes the stew sweeter; so have some people refused to embrace the advent of technology and have stuck with the Nokia ‘torch light’. So, congratulations. You have made things easier for yourself.

Now, do you know there is so much to your phone than photos and music? For a start, there is the Play store, which is like a depot of different applications you can download and use. While some of these applications are relevant, some others are not. However, as an individual seeking to be more productive at work, these five apps have been tried, tested and are guaranteed to help you achieve just that, even while you are up and running.

LOOKING FOR A JOB? ASK YOURSELF THESE 2 QUESTIONS.

There are diverse categories of job seekers, I’ve met a handful though.

1. The ones who have lost hope

2. The ones who hold misplaced confidence in themselves.

3. The ones who have actually had their brains filled with wrong ideologies – and they can’t be blamed.

4. The ones who still make efforts.

If you are a job seeker and you don’t fall into any of the categories above, good for you.

I have learnt over time that in most cases, those who end up in a good place or at least end up being happy with themselves are those who are flexible and constantly engage in the act of self-reflection. I believe everyone should be their own biggest critic as this aids self-improvement.

This involves asking yourself questions, proffering answers, having a deep thought and getting help when you’re stuck. This will help you to proceed.

There are myriads of questions you could ask yourself when you’re in a situation such as this but I have here, 2 vital questions that’ll aid you in reflecting on self.

What am I doing wrongly?

Career / Things To Do Before You Lose Your Job by Bustybee: 9:27am On Jul 27, 2016
https://insidify.com/discovery/expect-the-best-prepare-for-the-worst-what-to-do-before-you-lose-your-job.

So, I heard that a branch of an oil and gas company closed up it's Abuja branch recently. I didn't know how to react to the news because I didn't want to blame the company (I mean, we're in a recession). But I also didn't know what to do with the thoughts that were running through my mind; what will the staff do? What preparations did they make for them? What compensation will they get? And then I thought, maybe they got a heads up, but really, is there anything like that?

If you're like me, and you believe there's nothing like a heads up, you prolly have an exit plan already. But if you believe you'll get a warning and you don't have an exit plan, then you need to step back and have a rethink, because if you’re in a paid employment by someone that’s not you, you’ll need an exit plan.

An exit plan doesn’t mean you leave your employer stranded. On the other hand it’s more of understanding from the day you were employed that the system is not designed to make you prosper, rather you must capitalize on the system and bring out your success.

Don’t shoot the messenger, but I’ll like to say that companies sometimes, to improve performance or productivity, periodically review and adjust their business plans and processes. Hence, the emergence of new capital, changes in ownership, or changing economic circumstances can often lead to re-organization and restructuring within a company. So, it is not uncommon for job losses to result, and in some cases it may be the only way for a company to move forward and thrive.

Thing is, as employees, we fail to realize that there are other stakeholders, in fact, the ultimate stakeholders are the shareholders / business owners.

What to do?

About seven hours ago, Tolu saw his friend Richard board an aircraft at the international wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, en route the United Kingdom. Richard just alighted the craft at the Heathrow Airport, London and called to inform Tolu about his safe trip. Don’t get excited just yet, Tolu hasn’t gotten home - your guess is as good as mine; he is stuck in TRAFFIC!......

7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE FRIENDS AT WORK
https://insidify.com/discovery/this-is-why-you-should-make-friends-at-work
1.You spend a lot of time at work.

Face it, most of your waking hours are spent at work! You see your co-workers more than you see your partner and family. If you’re not close with anyone at work, it would make all of that time intolerable. Seeing a friendly face will make the time pass more quickly than if you’re isolated in your cubicle.

2. You’ll enjoy work more.

Everyone has had a bad job that makes you dread getting up in the morning. (And if you’ve not, clap and dance) It’s nice to look forward to going to work, if only because you want to share a story from the weekend with a friend. Having a friend at work can make any duty seem not so bad because you can either work together, or talk about it later on a break. If you work in different departments, or have different job titles, you can help each other out more. Has there ever been a disadvantage to being friends with the IT guy? (I know… not all of them are bad)

3. You’ll have a support system.

You might already have a built-in support system in your partner or family, but do you really want to spend your time off the clock talking about work? (I know I never want to) Plus, regardless of how supportive your loved ones are, they don’t really understand your job. Having a friend going through similar things helps because you won’t have to explain as much each time you start a story. They already know what you’re going through, who you’re dealing with, and will have valuable suggestions for how you can solve problems and accomplish goals.

4. You’ll feel a sense of belonging.

No one likes to feel lonely. Humans are social creatures, and that doesn’t change just because you’re on the clock. Having a friend, or a group of friendly faces, will help you feel like you belong at work. You’ll feel more open about sharing problems or successes, and this openness will create a great environment for communication. Besides just being beneficial for individual employees, it will be beneficial for the company because it builds a network for all employees to feel nurtured and that their suggestions and concerns will be taken to heart.

5. Loneliness reduces motivation and productivity.

Being isolated in your cubicle will suck your motivation for your job. You’ll feel disconnected from your co-workers and your job duties. Having friends at work has been shown to increase employee satisfaction up to 50%!

6. You’ll care more about your work.

(Strange as that sounds) Your job just isn’t a list of tasks once you have friends surrounding you. You will care about the people you’re working with, the community you’re building within the company. This will show in everyone’s passion for their job. It will also show to the community outside of work. Word will spread that it’s a good company to work for, and the new hires will be more quality, friendly people like those who are already employed.

7. You’ll improve your communication skills.

Talking with friends may be different than talking with your supervisor, but every little bit of communication helps. Having friendly conversations at work opens you up for more communication, so when it is time to face the boss, you’ll already be on a roll. Having friendly conversations might also help reduce your stress, so when you’re one-on-one with the head honcho, you’re more relaxed and less likely to jump the gun or act irrationally. You never know—it might help you see your boss as more friendly, too! (Bite me!).

Hence, get out of your comfy cubicle and get comfortable being friends with your colleagues because there’s more you stand to gain than lose.

Ever had a bad experience with colleagues because you got friendly? Please share and help others do better with office relationships.
