GBAM! That is what a responsible C-in-C would do; go to the frontlines and delegate non-critical Earth Summit-like engagements to his lieutenants.

Weak leaders delegate critical issues. Insecurity is critical in today's Nigeria. GEJ is weak. (Na only with UNILAG students e sabi do strong-head! Rubbish!)

Captainajama: This is arrant nonsense! So these GEJ haters want the government to play into the hands of these social deviants called boko haram? Or are they saying tha we should cancel our international engagements because there is no hierarchy and order in government? Why do we have chains of command? In my opinion, the first step was to calm the situation and stop reprisal attacks(that was done)and people.....there is a sitting government in Kaduna. I hate it when people deliberately air their stupidity and ignorance for all to see. Next thing, you people will suggest that should withdraw the joint task force and go with his cabinet members and legislators to fight boko haram insurgence. Do you even understand the essence or meaning of the earth summit? Do you really know why the food chain, eco balance and endangered species should be saved? Maybe, we have to open a sub forum on nairaland to educate people first before they start commenting on important local or global issues. Stop showing us how dysfunctional you are. Come to think of it, no government grinds to a halt because the head of ha government had to attend one important function or the other, because some pessimist, haters and uncoordinated bad belle critics will never see anything good in others save what they and their principals do.

Cool down abegi! Earth Summit is NOT farming or food production. Even Canada backed-out of Kyoto Accord when it saw that it will affect jobs and productivity.

How can your citizens be under siege, are unemployed, are poorly educated/uneducated, impoverished, have no power, and poor productivity, and all you prioritize is a freaking UN conference?!!!??

Mr. President, you should have delegated Earth Summit, not Nigeria's security (or lack of it)!

ogbeidejude: The President can actually rule this country from anywhere in the world. He is away to Brasil but the constitution of the land has made it easy that even when the number 1 man is away his fuctions and duties can be carried out by the number 2 man. Which is in place now. He is in on track and doing well as a president. Let's not politicise everything in Nigeria. All is on track as this is not his first trip away. God bless Nigeria.

Shoeless Clueless GEJ, updating your Facebook status does not count as ruling a country in crisis! The former needs Internet connection, the latter needs a leader's hands-on attention.

afam4eva:
Majority of Nigerians have benefitted from correuption in their own little way. If you have bribed a police officer, you're corrupt. If you've slept with a lecturer to get good grades, you're corrupt. If you've broken traffic rules you're corrup. If you've syphoned money meant for other people, you're corrupt. If you're at the helm of affairs and you pay lip service to fighting corruption, you're the corruption.

Hmmmm. . .I see your point. While the majority practice corruption "in their own little way" (waiting for their big break), the lives of future generations are mortgaged by the big players, AKA cabals.

Using the English football league system as an analogy, most Nigerians "play" in the lower/less popular/inferior 140+ English leagues, while those in government are in the Premier League of corruption.

What the people cannot envision will forever remain elusive - We have come to accept corrupt practices as the norm, with everyone waiting for his/her turn. But like the mega-lottery, 99.999% of the population will NEVER benefit from it.

Family / Father Kills Man Who Molested Daughter - What Would You Do? by canuck(m): 2:40pm On Jun 14, 2012
Father Kills Man Who Molested Daughter

A Texas father may have been within his rights when he beat a man to death after allegedly catching him in the act of molesting his four-year-old daughter.

According to reports, the incident took place Saturday while the little girl's family was hosting a get-together at their home in rural Shiner, Tx.

While many of the guests left the house to attend to the family's horses, the four-year-old remained in the house, according to Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon.

When the father returned and discovered the alleged attack taking place, he reportedly struck the man in the head several times, killing him. According to preliminary autopsy reports the man died due to blunt force head and neck injuries.

The alleged attacker was pronounced dead at the scene, and the daughter was taken to a hospital in Victoria, Tx. for examination.

The sheriff said she was "OK, besides the obvious mental trauma."

The name of the man who was killed is being withheld, along with the identities of the father and daughter.

Harmon said the father didn't intend to kill the man, whom he considered an acquaintance, but may not have broken any laws by doing so.

"You have a right to defend your daughter," Harmon told media. "He acted in defence of his third person. Once the investigation is completed we will submit it to the district attorney who then submits it to the grand jury, who will decide if they will indict him."

The killing may be justified under Texas' Defense of Third Person law. The law allows citizens to use deadly force against anyone committing or attempting to commit sexual assault and other crimes.

"The actor would be justified under Section 9.31 or 9.32 in using force or deadly force to protect himself against the unlawful force or unlawful deadly force he reasonably believes to be threatening the third person he seeks to protect," said a description of the law on the Texas penal code website.

A story on CNN's website had received more than 8,000 comments as of Wednesday morning, many of them supportive of the father's actions.

Someone posting under the name Sozojeff summed up the tone of many of the commenters: "I can't help but think of the suffering of countless other little girls and/or boys this father has probably stopped or prevented from happening. Hats off to you dad," he wrote.

On Twitter, many expressed similar sentiments.

"To the Texas Dad that beat the creep to death for molesting his 4yo daughter, where would you like the Father of the Year trophy sent to?" asked @TheMichaelRock.

It is normal Naija lingo to say, "I will slap you if you . . .", "I will kill anybody who. . .", but do you really see yourself doing this?

Politics / Re: Is Nigeria A Poor Or Rich Country? by canuck(m): 11:37am On Jun 14, 2012
@OP - You see, it depends.

NIGERIA'S RICHES (Overflowing in abundance):
1) Corruption
2) Fraud
3) Poor leadership
4) Poor planning
5) Short-sightedness
6) Tribalism

NIGERIA'S POVERTY (Grossly lacking):
1) Forthrightness/Integrity
2) Selfless public servants
3) Long range planning
4) Discipline
5) National interest
6) Civicism - Population that holds public officers accountable

Nigeria's riches/poverty is not in the budget; it's in the people.

The entire confusion may stem from too many Federal agencies chasing down corruption:

1) ICPC - Independent Corrupt Practices Commission
2) EFCC
3) Nigeria Police (Special Fraud Unit)

And now SSS?!? What has a thiefing legislator got to do with threat to state security??

In those countries you dont battle fibre vandals causing service failures
In thise countries you dont pay multiple taxations to all the organs of government.
In thos countries you dont communities making multiple demands on your base stations.

the networks are spending billions of dollar to expand and maintain the network. the investors are the most impacted in terms of revenue loss.

Yeah, yeah! Nigerians already pay more than 10 times the call rates of Kenyans, and there is no regular power in Kenya, Al-Shabab terrorists are blowing up Nairobi, etc.

Check-out the Telcos' profit margins in Nigeria versus other countries and you will see that Telcos are milking Nigerians dry!

Telcos should pay-up and step-up their services to the people jor.

Lujan: Money...I was a promising science student & wanted to study medicine bt my sweet parents aren't bouyant enough to bear d "expenses" & upon their candid advise, I switched to arts class in my SS2 with d hope of studying Law. When I bought my JAMB form, I filled Law as first choice & Eng. Lit as 2nd choice with EBSU as my 1st & 2nd choice of institution (because my parents cant "pay" if I study outside my town). Fortunately my name came out on the merit list of both Law & English, but because "money no dey" my parents advised me to go for d latter. I'm now a learned final yr student of English Lang. & Lit., courtesy of Jah's grace.

Money yab man!

You may still go back for Law, if the interest is still there, after hammering smiley

Most (good) schools only admit first degree holders into Law anyway, so your English degree will still serve you well.

All the best.

Knowing that 100 Million Indians live in slums like this in Bangalore, 900 Million (77% of Indians) live on less than $0.50 a day, and that India does not have constant power supply, I dare look this gift horse in the mouth.

Our shameless leaders should do the right thing for once - Say, "Shukriya - Thanks, but no thanks!"

And I am tired of Indians saying, "Nigeria today reminds me of India 20 years ago!"

Moves like this make Nigeria a laughing stock in the comity of nations.

Nigeria is not a basket case in need of charity - Nigeria is a sorry case in desperate need of leadership.
