I think the issue is with the fertility of the land. A handful of manure per plant would have changed the whole story if done on time

Never assume your land is fertile enough for cultivation. The smallest dosage of manure if applied correctly can solve a lot of problems for the plant

Lepidopteran Pests
Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) are the second most diverse pest insects after beetles. There is hardly any cultivated plant that is not attacked by at least one lepidopteran pest. As pollinators of many plants, adult moths and butterflies are usually beneficial insects that feed on nectar using their siphoning proboscis. The caterpillar, however, almost always has chewing mouthparts that are suitable for feeding on various parts of a plant causing production losses. Most caterpillars are defoliators or miners of succulent plant tissues.

Some (for example wood moths) can cause gum pockets and introduce rot resulting in timber degrade. They bore large holes in stems which can leave smaller trees susceptible to wind damage.
They can be severe pests of seedlings in the nursery (for instance cutworms or armyworms) which can cause partial to complete defoliation and bending of the seedlings.

MKP (0-52-34) is the fertilizer, which contains highest amount of major elements,
among other soluble fertilizers. Its formula is KH2PO4. As it contains no nitrogen, it is
appropriate for plants that require intensive use of fertilizers. MKP fertilize can be the
most suitable source of potassium and phosphorus when nitrogen use is
contradictory. In other times it is also the preferred type of fertilizer as it can be
given together with any kind of nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium, nitrate or urea
nitrogen containing fertilizers).

As MKP fertilizer contains no such hazardous elements such as chlorine, sodium or
heavy metals, it can be applied safely to all kinds of products. It is demonstrated
that MKP fertilizer application via leaves prevents fungi growth. When mixed with
pesticides it is shown that it increases the effectiveness of such pesticides.

Application method

MKP fertilizer is suitable for application via leaves. As pH value of water used via
sprinkler systems can be maintained at around 4,5, thanks to MKP fertilizer
absorption of all major and trace elements is facilitated. Thanks to low EC value (0,7
mS/cm) risks for burns in leaves are too low and therefore it may even be used in
high concentrations. It may be mixed with any soluble fertilizer; yet should not be
used together with fertilizers containing calcium (Ca).

Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) is a widely used source of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N).* It’s made of two constituents common in the fertilizer industry and contains the most phosphorus of any common solid fertilizer.

MAP has been an important granular fertilizer for many years. It’s water-soluble and dissolves rapidly in adequately moist soil. Upon dissolution, the two basic components of the fertilizer separate again to release ammonium (NH4+) and phosphate (H2PO4−), both of which plants rely on for healthy, sustained growth. The pH of the solution surrounding the granule is moderately acidic, making MAP an especially desirable fertilizer in neutral- and high-pH soils.
