scholes0:
Some tems need some updating, you need to collaborate with versed Yoruba linguists from Unilag, Lasu, UI , OAU or Unilorin.

Cheese in Yoruba is Warankasi.
Orange - Orombo (or Osan)
Okra - ila
Horse (Esin - prncd Eshin)

That's an idea, would you happen to know of any Yoruba Linguists who I could get into contact with?

How to pronounce words in Yoruba

Yorùbá is a tonal language meaning that some syllables are pronounced in a higher pitch and others in a lower pitch.

Accents are denoted on top of vowels (or the letter ‘n’) to show whether to pronounce a syllable with a lower pitch or with a higher pitch.

The three tones of Yorùbá are:

Dò is the lowest tone which is displayed by a grave accent (downwards facing).
Re is a neutral tone (normal speaking voice) which is shown by the absence of an accent.
Mí is the highest tone and is displayed by an acute accent (upwards facing).

One way of memorising the three tones of Yorùbá is through the Do Re Mi song from the sound of music.

To pronounce the word Yorùbá first look at the word, you can see that there’s no accent over the ‘o’ so it has a neutral tone, there’s a downwards accent over the ‘u’ so it has a low tone and there’s an upwards accent over the ‘a’ so it has a high tone.

In other words

Yo rù bá
Re Dò Mí

I have created a site on learning Yoruba because I realised how little information is online about the language, compared to other languages such as Spanish or Japanese. On the site I give tips and tricks on how to learn Yoruba, I have studied aspects of grammar in Yoruba and have broken them down into a simple and easy to understand way on the site to hopefully encourage others to learn Yoruba.

Please let me know what you think.
