President Muhammadu Buhari has again stated that he can't wait to hand over power to the next president.

Buhari spoke on Tuesday at a farewell meeting with the outgoing United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

President Buhari said he cannot wait to retire to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, to look after his farms and take care of his cattle, adding that he plans to be a big landlord back at home.

“I plan to be a big landlord back at home, working on my farms and tending to more than 300 animals. I am eager to go,” he said.

Buhari lauded the outgoing ambassador for the enormous achievements recorded in Nigeria-US relations in the three-and-half years she had been here.

In her remarks, the American ambassador said she was impressed with the progress made in Nigeria-US relations in those three–and–a half years.

She cited the recent institution of a five-year visa regime between the two countries; active collaboration in security and the supply of military hardware including warplanes and the soon-to-come fighter helicopters; and also cooperation in the health sector to fight HIV and COVID response as some of her achievements in office.

[b][/b]We Will Impose Visa Ban On Political Actors Undermining Nigeria’s Democracy – US Govt.

The United States Government has said it is planning to impose visa ban on politicians who undermined the just concluded general elections.

The US government stated this on Tuesday after observers said Nigeria’s 2023 elections fell short of the standards upheld in previous cycles in recent years.

Recall that an ally of the President-elect Bola Tinubu, Musiliu ‘MC Oluomo’ Akinsanya, had warned Igbo voters residing in Lagos to stay at home if they were going to vote against the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the same vein, one of Tinubu’s media aides, Bayo Onanuga, publicly called for violence against Nigerians of Igbo origin in Lagos, saying the nation’s commercial capital belongs to the Yoruba ethnic group.

Onanuga, in particular, defied widespread condemnation to back down on his dangerous rhetoric, insisting that the Igbo ethnic nationalities have no place in Lagos politics and government.

Thousands of Igbo residents were reportedly turned back from various polling centres by political thugs allegedly loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress, with many voters being asked to speak Yoruba before being allowed to access the ballot.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was reelected on the back of the suppression of opposition votes, has sued for calm following his victory, saying he would make efforts to mend fences and stymie ethnic divisions across the state.

“Nigeria carried out the second round of its electoral process with gubernatorial and state assembly elections on March 18.  The United States is deeply troubled by the disturbing acts of violent voter intimidation and suppression that took place during those polls in Lagos, Kano, and other states.  Members of the U.S. diplomatic mission observed the elections in Lagos and elsewhere and witnessed some of these incidents first-hand.

“The use of ethnically charged rhetoric before, during, and after the gubernatorial election in Lagos was particularly concerning.  We commend all Nigerian political actors, religious and community leaders, youth, and citizens who have chosen to reject and speak out against such violence and inflammatory language, affirming Nigerians’ commitment to and respect for the democratic process.

“We call on Nigerian authorities to hold accountable and bring to justice any individuals found to have ordered or carried out efforts to intimidate voters and suppress voting during the election process.  The United States likewise will consider all available actions, including additional visa restrictions, on individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Nigeria.

“Following the February 25 national elections, the United States joined other international observers in urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve voting processes and technical elements that experienced flaws in that voting round.  The March 18 elections appear to have had significant operational improvements, as polling stations generally opened on time and most results were visible on an electronic viewing platform in a timely manner.

“The United States renews its call for any challenges to election results to go through established legal processes, which must not be interfered with.  We further call for Nigeria’s people to work together as they participate in and continue to strengthen the country’s vibrant democracy.”

Chimaroke Nnamani, the senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,

He announced his exit from the PDP after he lost his senatorial bid to the Labour Party.

Nnamani also expressed appreciation to his constituents for the unalloyed support over the years.

The former Enugu State governor’s formal exit from the opposition party was contained in a statement he signed on Monday.

The PUNCH reports how the senator was expelled by the PDP on February 10, 2023, alongside some other key party members for alleged anti-party activities. This is also as he lost his bid to return to the Senate to his rival Kelvin Chukwu of the Labour Party.

Nnamani stated that he had consulted with his associates and constituents alike and had decided to quit the PDP on account of irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party.

Speaking further, he noted that he had moved on and hoped that his modest contributions to the development of his constituency would be the building block on which his successors could build on.

While reaffirming his acquaintance with the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, he promised to continue to partner him.

Two of the supporters of Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, have been arrested bu the operatives of the Department of State Services.

They were nabbed for allegedly inciting violence in Kano State.

The secret police has also deployed its crack detectives to other states of the federation to “track down any politician with the mindset of inciting violence ahead of March 18 gubernatorial and State Assembly elections”.

The spokesman of the secret police, Peter Afunanya, who disclosed this Thursday morning, explained that the duo of Sharu Abubakar Tabula and Isma’il Iliyasu Mangu, were tracked down after the suspects had separately messages recorded inciting messages, which they shared through various social media channels.

Afunanya, who also shared the inciting video with Daily Trust, called on the concerned party to shelve it forthwith or be ready to face the consequences.

He added, “In those potentially harmful messages, they specifically championed certain political interests and directly called on their supporters to violently attack those opposed to them, including security personnel during the 18th March, 2023 Governorship and House of Assembly election in the State.

“As a result of this development, a particular political party in Kano has threatened to organise protest march in the metropolis as well as storm offices of some of the security agencies on 16th March, 2023 in solidarity for the suspects.”

The DSS spokesman stressed that the secret police will not idly watch “misguided persons or groups undermine the peace and security of the state”.

According to him, the leadership of the said party should rein in its members and urge them to desist from conducts capable of causing a breakdown of law and order in Kano and its environs before, during and after the scheduled election.

He further stated, “Meanwhile, the Service is collaborating with sister security agencies to ensure that adequate security is provided for a successful electoral exercise.

“Aside Kano, the service recently arrested similar subversive elements that threatened violence in other States of the Federation. It would be recalled that it had on 8th March, 2023, enjoined politicians to engage constructively and shun violence, fake news and hate speech.”

He called on the political players to abide by the letters of the electoral Act and guidelines, adding that all and sundry are advised to positively contribute to the sustenance of peace and democracy in Nigeria.

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress is currently leading in Rivers State.

 

He has won 10 of the 13 local government areas in Rivers State so far collated in by the Independent National Electoral Commission for last Saturday’s presidential election.

 

Among the 13 won by the APC is Ikwerre, the LGA of the former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

 

The Collation Officer for Ikwerre LGA, Prof. James Kpolovie, disclosed this while presenting the result to the state collation officer, Prof Charles Adias at the INEC office in Port Harcourt on Monday. 

Recall that Amaechi was absent during the presidential rally of the APC in Port Harcourt prior to the elections.

From the results, the APC polled a total of 9,609 to defeat the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party which polled 8,752 and 4,869 to come second and third respectively.

The other LGA’s won by the APC so far are Opobo/Nkoro, Asari-Toru, Abua-Odual, Bonny, Omuma, Gokana, Emuoha, Eleme, Tai, Akuku-Toru.

Meanwhile the Labour Party had won in three LGA so far; Bonny, Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni.

The PDP on its part has so far won three LGA’s namely; Andoni, Okrika and Ogu/Bolo

The state Collation Officer for INEC, Prof Dias has called for a break pending when the remaining LGA’s, including Governor Nyesom Wike’s Obio/Akpor will turn in their votes.

[b][/b]BREAKING: US Extends Tourist Visa Validity To 5 Years For Nigerians.


The United States has announced that starting March 1, 2023, it will increase visitor visa validity from 24 months to 60 months for Nigerians who want to enter the United States temporarily for business and/or tourism.

This was contained in a press statement by the US Consulate General released on Monday.

The PUNCH had reported that the Federal Government had directed the full implementation of a new visa reciprocity policy for citizens of the United States of America with effect from March 1, 2023.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said the directive was issued following approval for the implementation of the new Bilateral Consular Policy Agreements between the two governments.

According to Aregbesola, the agreements amongst others include the reciprocity of five-year tourist visa validity for American Citizens pursuant to Section 30 of the Immigration Act, 2015; Extension of visa validity to three years for diplomats and government officials between the citizens of Nigeria and the United States of America.

The statement by the US Consulate also assured that the cost of the visa fee still remains the same.

The statement reads, “Effective March 1, 2023, the U.S. Mission will increase visitor visa validity from 24 months to 60 months for Nigerians who want to enter the United States temporarily for business and/or tourism.

“The visa validity extension allows Nigerians to use the visa for 60 months to make short trips to the United States for tourism or business purposes before having to renew their visa. The visa application fee, currently USD160, will not increase as a result of the increased visa validity.

“Increasing visa validity is one of several initiatives taken by the United States to reduce visa appointment wait times in Nigeria. The U.S. Mission continues to offer No-Interview Visa Renewals to those who meet the eligibility criteria. Appointments for No-Interview Visa Renewals are readily available.

Gunmen have killed an official of the Independent Electoral Commission.

 

According to Punch, the official was reportedly sho dead in Delta state while some corps members sustained different degrees of injuries.

 

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Delta State, Mr. Monday Tom, confirmed this to journalists on Monday shortly after the result of Ukwani Local Government Area was taken.

 

He said, “There were incidents of attack in Ukwani Local Government Area where one of us died on their way coming after the election.


“The gunmen opened fire at their bus and unfortunately killed one INEC official and injured the corps members.


“The corpers are now receiving treatment but we are planning on how to move the corps members who were injured to a hospital in Asaba”

 

Meanwhile, 14 local governments have so far been officially announced by the INEC with LP winning in 10 while the PDP won in four.

According to Italian media La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 24-year-old activated his goals bonus in his contract after scoring his 20th goal of the season, which saw him earn €130,000 (N64m).

Osimhen scored in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League round of 16 to take his tally for the 2022/23 season to 20 and unlock the €130,000 bonus (N63.6m).

The Edo born striker has been instrumental in helping Napoli maintain their spot at the summit of Serie A and has scored 21 goals and four assists in 25 games for the Naples-based side this term.

Security operatives have arrested a member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Chinyere Igwe after he was caught with $500,000 Cash.

Igwe, a serving member who represents Port Harcourt 2 Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber, was intercepted with the huge sum of money and immediately detained.

[b][/b]R.Kelly Sentenced To 20 Years Imprisonment For Child S3x Crimes While Already Serving 30 Years.


Embattled R&B singer R. Kelly, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in a Chicago federal courtroom on Thursday, following his conviction last year on charges of child p*rnography and enticement of a minor.

The 56-year-old is already serving a 30-year prison term for his 2021 conviction on racketeering and s3x trafficking charges in a New York federal court.

US District Judge Harry D. Leinenweber said in court Thursday, Feb. 23, that 19 years of the 20-year prison sentence would be served concurrently, or at the same time as his other sentence. One year would be served consecutively, or after that sentence is complete, he said.

Kelly was convicted in September on three counts of production of child p*rnography and three counts of enticement of a minor to engage in criminal s3xual activity. A motion for a new trial was denied last week.

Prosecutors had asked for a 25-year sentence to be served once his other 30-year prison sentence is complete.

“Robert Kelly is a serial s3xual predator who, over the course of many years, specifically targeted young girls and went to great lengths to conceal his abuse of Jane and other minor victims,” prosecutors said in a filing. “To this day, and even following the jury verdict against him, Kelly refuses to accept responsibility for his crimes.”

The defense said in its filing that Kelly is already serving a “de facto life sentence” and asked for any sentence be served at the same time as his 30-year sentence in the New York case.

“In the unlikely event that Kelly was to survive his 30-year sentence, there is no reason to believe he would reoffend as a geriatric in his mid-80s,” his attorneys wrote. “The overwhelming majority of Kelly’s criminal conduct was committed a quarter century ago.”

The sentencing hearing is the culmination of nearly three decades of allegations Kelly had s3xually abused underage girls.

Chelsea board will look to sell attacking midfielder Mason Mount this summer if he fails to agree to a new contract at the end of the season.

Government of Ogun State has appealed to commercial banks in the State to reopen for business following their total shutdown on Wednesday.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that banks in the Gateway State refused to operate on Wednesday to avoid another attack similar to that of Tuesday, when banks and their facilities were vandalised by angry protesters.

Angry Abeokuta residents rioted on Tuesday to express their displeasure over the lingering scarcity of the new naira notes and petrol.

Our correspondent reports that all banks and ATMs were totally shut down across the State yesterday, making it impossible for residents to access banking services.

Some customers also complained of their inability to make use of their bank apps and USSD to make online transactions.

But, the Ogun State Government has appealed to the bankers to return to work, assuring them of adequate protection.

The government also promised to continue to engage the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and proffer lasting solutions to the issue of cash shortage.

The Commissioner for Finance in Ogun, Dapo Okubadejo, spoke at a meeting on Wednesday with the Bankers Committee in his Oke Mosan, Abeokuta office.

According to Okubadejo, the scarcity of the new naira notes, as well as the refusal of banks to open for business is “hampering economic activities in the State,” stressing that the government is prepared to forestall any further destruction of banking facilities.

While assuring of improved security across all financial outlets, Okubadejo described Tuesday’s destruction of some bank’s ATMs as unfortunate, saying it was as a result of the frustration caused by the unavailability of cash to the citizenry.

He revealed that the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, had earlier held a meeting with the Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria in Ogun State, Mr Wahab Oseni.

He charged residents of the State to exercise patience and desist from attacking banks and bankers.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria has indicated that it would give money to the various banks, so as a State, we are using this opportunity to appeal to the Bankers’ Committee to ensure that people have access to their funds, for the smooth running of economic activities across the State,” Okubadejo said.

Reacting, the leader of the Bankers’ Forum, Mr. Adeniran Oladele, revealed that the crisis was caused by misinformation, saying it has led to the banks losing revenue as a result of the closure.

He called for aggressive sensitisation of the masses on the availability of the naira notes, adding that this will help in reducing public unrest.
