6 takeaways from Juventus’ dominating home win over Barcelona

Juventus beat Barcelona 3-0 at home in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup. Paulo Dybala grabbed a brace, and his compatriot Lionel Messi came away empty-handed, but what did we learn from this clash?

Allegri won the tactical battle

Massimiliano Allegri clearly took notes from PSG's two legs against Barcelona. His team struck the perfect balance between pressing the Blaugrana and keeping them from establishing a good rhythm in possession, sitting deep and stymieing Barça's possession play, and attacking with intent when they did get the ball. Barcelona just couldn't get out of their own half for the first 10 minutes of the match, and they never recovered from going down early. It was a masterclass from Allegri, in stark contrast to Luis Enrique's failures on the other side.
Paulo Dybala was the star of the show

There was only one Argentine star on the pitch as Juve took on Barcelona, and it wasn't Lionel Messi. Paulo Dybala put Juve ahead with two early goals, and he didn't stop working for 80 minutes as Juve extended their lead and labored to keep Barcelona off the scoresheet. Dybala's finishing was inch perfect on the day, and he was a constant threat on the ball. Dybala's been compared with Messi over and over again in his young career, and up against his countryman for the first time, he somehow surpassed expectations.
Luis Enrique was always going to struggle to replace the suspended Sergio Busquets' influence in the middle of the pitch, and one of the biggest questions ahead of this match was who he'd pick to step into that role. Lucho initially lined Barcelona up in their typical 4-3-3 formation and went with Javier Mascherano as the holding midfielder, but it wasn't a successful shift in the slightest. Mascherano was decent defensively, as would be expected, but he couldn't come close to matching Busquets' tempo-setting ability. Barça's midfield was all but nonexistent, and it took a switch back to a three-back system for Barcelona to even look like threatening Juve.
Gonzalo Higuain didn't get on the scoresheet but he did his job

Gonzalo Higuain was bought to score goals. Juventus paid a record fee for him to do that, but against Barcelona, he wasn't able to find the back of the net. That's ok, though, because Higuain did exactly what Max Allegri asked him to, running his socks off, pressuring the Barcelona defenders, and working tirelessly on both sides of the ball for the benefit of the team. He's not just a poacher — he's an all-around team player — and he showed those qualities against Barça.
Jeremy Mathieu was emblematic of Barcelona's issues

Jeremy Mathieu was awful against Juve. Lined up at left back against Juan Cuadrado, he was torn apart time and time again, and he probably shouldn't have even been on the pitch to start. Barcelona were all over the place defensively as a unit, and uncharacteristically poor in possession and Mathieu was the worst of the bunch. It's no surprise he was hauled off at halftime, but he wasn't the only player to come out of this match with a blemish on his record.
This game could've been a lot different if Buffon didn't come up huge to deny Andres Iniesta early. A goal there could and would have changed the whole complexion of the match — and the entire tie — but Buffon came up big once again. He didn't do a single thing wrong against Barcelona, and at 39 years old, he looks like he's fine to keep going until 45.

Manchester City eye move for Monaco star Mendy

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has earmarked Monaco ace Benjamin Mendy as a top summer transfer target as he looks to bolster his full-back options, reports France Football, via Get French Football.

Mendy, 22, has enjoyed a sensational campaign for Monaco this season and impressed in both legs of their Champions League round of 16 triumph over Manchester City earlier this season.
Guardiola is expected to be extremely busy in the summer after coming up short in his pre-season targets and his defence has become a clear area of reinforcement following some shambolic defending during the season.
City have a number of player out of contract at the end of the season and Guardiola will not only need to find a new long-term left-back, but he will also have to strengthen the right side of his defence with Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta out of contract this season.

Monaco are bracing themselves for a plenty of interest from their European rivals in the summer following what has been a superb campaign for the club and Leonardo Jardim’s side will look to command in excess of €35m (£29m) for Mendy, having only paid £17m to secure his services last summer.
Only Vincent Bessat (48) and Lucas Lima (40) have completed more crosses (excluding corners) in Ligue 1 this season than Mendy (32).

Sorry for your ordeal, but I must tell you that the CBP officer was magnanimous not to have issued you an order of "expedited removal" because he/she has the authority to do so. The permission to withdraw your application for admission is a privilege and not a right.  It is solely within the discretion of the CBP officer.

Since you were allowed to voluntarily withdraw your application for admission which means you have not been banned and can re-apply at anytime even though it may raise concerns and questions by a consul. Be prepared to argue your case with your strong ties and hope for a visa officer that will be patient enough to listen to your stories at POE.

Why I won't blame your uncle is the lack of preparedness on your own part.

Did you call your "supposed host" a day to your arrival? Apparently you didn't, otherwise you should have been informed of their relocation and what have you. A hotel booking of less than 2 minutes would have been sufficient.

Why were you sent to secondary in the first instance? You must have given conflicting answers or CBP officer wasn't satisfied with your preliminary answers.

At secondary inspection; was there any incriminating messages found on your phone? What about your baggage? Any work document?

I need to ask because it is rear for a passenger with enough funds coming to the U.S on holiday be turned back at the ports.

You failed to prepare. Good luck reapplying
. The major issue was the man didn't make adequate arrangement for reception. I think it was as a result of the event that was taking place. However he has suggested he want to write a letter to homeland and the USA embassy in Nigeria explaining the situation and he wants to re-invite me in Dec. Is this the right thing to do, if not what is the best way for him to go about this. At least I want my name cleared with those homeland guys. Please @all will appreciate your response and advice.

Hello democrat4. That's a long, unfortunate story, but I don't see a question in there. The visa allows you to knock on the door of America, but only CBP can determine whether and how long to let you in. They don't turnaround people lightly and without cause. Wherever you are traveling in the world, it's behooves you to have a concrete plan of what you are going to do there. It sounds like your plan was found wanting.

. @ VO, thanks for your response. My relative that I was planning to visit did not make proper arrangement to receive me at the poe. However he has suggested he want to write a letter to homeland and the USA embassy in Nigeria explaining the situation and he wants to re-invite me in Dec. Is this the right thing to do, if not what is the best way for him to go about this.

. There was nothing on my phone. The real issue was the address, I even suggested that I will make a hotel reservation. Now, what are my chances if I reapply.

Dear VO
I had a terrible experience in new York airport. I was refused entry. Reason been my relative address had changed from when I applied for the visa. I was supposed to stay for 13 days. The officer tried to contact the number and address on the form without success. My uncle had told me his wife will receive me. The number he gave me was that of the girlfriend in new York and I think that's where the problem started. The reason for this I guess its because of the wife's attitude problem. But the officer new she was not exactly the wife. When he went tru my uncles status he was able to get his wife number
At that time the wife was already trying to reach me. The wife was in california and she told the cbp officer that she will buy me a ticket to LA. But at that point the guys mind was made up. I had to withdraw my visas voluntarily so as not to be forced out and banned. The officer said i can contact the VO in Nigeria. My questions

Can I explain what happened to the Vo and still be able to apply in the future. If yes how do I go about it. I was only made to know i was refused entry. I don't know if I was banned.

If I still want to attend the visit coz am currently on 4wks leave wish just started. How do I go about it. This was my first trip outside Nigeria and I had boasted about in the office. Just don't know how to face that. Lol.

I also want the record set straight as I will be eligible for secondment overseas in my firm next year. It might be in our USA office. I don't want it to affect me when the opportunity comes.

Need your advice please

All I can say is Pele. Next time, just jejeje book hotel and collect hotel booking. Also if I may ask did you travel without cash? Also did you have an itinerary of places to visit as a tourist?

Cos if your uncle isn't picking you up and you got like $2k on you no cbp will turn you back cos you will tell them its disappointing your uncle treated you this way, but you came on holidays and you would like to continue your plans so you will stay in a hotel.

I just remembered my last poe experience in NY... Those guys aren't mean at all, it's only unfortunate this happened to you.

My last trip I made the mistake of not declaring my foodstuff at the machine. When I met the cbp officer he asked me if I had foodstuff I said yes, a lot! And he was like you didn't declare it at d machine I was like mogbe modaran!

The guy was like its alright because I had just told him and he wrote something on my paper and told me to tell them at the front I had food to declare. After collecting my luggage, I saw a few officers checking luggage before you step out and I went to one and explained, on the system, I didn't declare food by mistake but the CBP officer said I should meet you guys here, he was like he's the same officer I met in front...

I was like oh, great and he directed me to agric where my bags were checked and cleared. I still saw him on the way our where he waved and smiled at me.

I suggest we all tune in to CBS reality border security: american front line to know what to expect at the poe because your case isn't supposed to be an issue if you were well informed.

The CBP sent you home because they felt you will be stranded in the US and become a burden to the state if the person picking you was unavailable. It is a frequent occurence on the show.

It was on the show I learnt not declaring food can cost you a fine of $300 hence the moku modaran! And they will gladly colllect cash or credit card. grin
. I had more than 2k dollars on me. I even suggested that, but at a point I noticed his mind was made up
