That's because phones sold in Nigeria are unlocked.(Not tied to any carrier) But in most advanced countries, the carriers sell their phones on a contract basis ranging from some few months to 2 years, and as such it often comes cheaper, with bogus softwares, and some terms of contract.
Phones / Re: Apple Unveils 4G iPad by Djcn: 10:24pm On Mar 08, 2012
kudos to apple for trying to keep their heads up.

The most impressive feature is the screen resolution.

Two independent reviews complained of the processor speed. Takes long to load some apps.

Hardware wise nothing new, the strength of the ipad is the ios.

I had long predicted 2012 as the breaking point for the ipad, especially this summer, when windows tablets will take the stage, along with a flurry of other tablets, until then i keep my fingers crossed but can bet apple will be struggling to maintain a 50% market share.

DMA is not an I/O device. Isn't DMA just a buffer? I/O devices connect the processor to the outside world. Also, I'm not really sure I/O devices can bypass the processor except if it has its own processor and using its own resources; otherwise, there would be contention issues on the time line.

I stand to be corrected as I never paid attention in my computer architecture class that I took eons ago.

DMA is not an I/O device. You are right sir
Isn't DMA just a buffer?. No Sir, it is not.

In simple terms, it means that data being transferred directly between a drive (or any supporting device) and memory, without using the CPU as an intermediary. The opposite of DMA is PIO.

It's like this basically

In the US/Canada/Europe, it's only about iPhone or Android. The only people using BlackBerry are those who use it for business, their company gives it them due to secure email on the go. Their personal phones aren't BB. And apart from that, people obsessed with BBM (mainly young teenagers and students) also use it, and people who want to buy a cheap smartphone.

In places like Nigeria, and other developing markets, BlackBerry dominates. Why? Cheap, simple to use, and an obsession with BBM.

Follow the news. Android handsets (Samsung, htc, etc) dominate in the US and RIMs market share price has gone down 80 per cent cos they can't compete. Apple phones are twice are expensive as blackberry but still people prefer it. But in places like Nigeria not everybody has that kind of money to buy an iPhone 4s or Samsung s2

Read this article, in the UK it is now a two horse race
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobile-phones/8972934/Apple-iPhone-prospers-in-Britain-but-suffers-in-the-eurozone.html

The US/Canada/Europe are not the only users of phones in the world. Most people there use android because it is a cheaper smartphone, Learn to always get your facts right. Those region still has a higher bb penetration than Nigeria. Now this link gives the bb market share. It accounted for 3% of all phones shiped as against apple"s 4.6 and Most companies had a higher shipment last year than this year, Why

While i not in support of ostentatious display of phones.I was an early adopter of the bb and it greatly enhanced my business then, that there are better smatphones now is normal, cos the world keeps changing.

BB ruled the smartphone world for years, and the carriers were the ones that promoted it, it came to nigeria late
and as such we just embrasing it.
It was the arrival of the iphone with the touch user interface (that stole d show).
The truth is bb users is increasing worldwide and dont know why some naija people are just ignorant. if you dont like a phone, stick to what you like and use it.
most users of bb can afford android but our carriers dont flag it, and others dont need it because it doesnt offer what they want, or they are simply not interested in it. If your phone makes you happy be happy and if you think you ve got a better phone than my nokia 1280, just ensure it doesn't fall on my iron tiles.

Not much of a tablet lover. Anyway apple has lead the market for good two years but i see them losing more than 30% of their market share next year, not to samsung anyway who makes impressive tablets but cant make inroads.

Looking forward to ULTRABOOKS in 2012.

i still cannot fathom this thing about being scared of rooting.

what do u pple think dis rooting thing is anyway? i just dont get. . . . . . . . . .

to be honest if u scared of rooting your fone, u prolly shouldnt be on android tech boards. prolly everyone who goes there has rooted, unlocked their bootloaders and flash roms and radios like almost daily. hanging out with them might be a problem

besides im still yet to hear anyone brick his fone by rooting. of which even if that occurs is going to be a softbrick, which a simple flash will solve.

nokia still makes fine fones u know, really

rooting isn't for everyone and the fact that u do it n possible enjoy it doesn't make it risk free.

1. the process is sometimes irreversible
2. void ur phone warranty
3. might destroy the phone (seen some cases)
4. open up more security risks

for anyone interested, just be patient to get as much info as necessary about ur phone.

@lynxnoon

Funny enough, it's mainly the poor gaming situation on Android that is keeping me away for the moment.
My main timewaster game is Street Fighter IV on iOS. It's been out for well over a year on iOS but won't hit Android until next year (and that's exclusive to LG phones for 6 months)
Next up is FIFA 12. That isn't on Android. Championship manager and Football Manager are on iOS. Android lacks these games.
I hope the situation improves next year but for now it's not ideal. I'm waiting for CES 2012 before I decide if im getting an Android phone.

It has to do with the developers and not the phone hardware or platform. Epic once blamed the carriers for having too much bloatware earlier this year.

Don't see that happening and don't know why that should happen for a top of the line tablet.

@pappy2000
CDMA is Code Division Multiple Access is what CDMA operators use to allow you the users to access their network. It does not really take time into the equation while GSM uses TDMA Time Division Multiple Access which uses time to determine your access. So you can see why GSM operators are not very willing to give you uncapped time access, you will tie-up their precious resources.

However that is changing as more and more GSM carriers are using hybrid systems that utilize both CDMA and TDMA. We will get uncapped data access but how soon and how cheap I can't predict.

A funny and crude explanation up there. A number of GSM operators offers unlimited data caps.

'Bigoted iFan'?!
Don't make me laugh. Just because I can confidently tell you that this is not nearly an 'ipad killer' i'm now a 'bigoted iFan' abi?

You seem to struggle with English language. You claimed that the Kindle Fire has 'so many cool features'. I've asked you to name them, especially excluding the Amazon exclusive features that will not be available in Nigeria. Instead of rising to the challenge you're taking the easy way out.

Most likely you seem to enjoy a cycle of never ending debate. That issue has long been answered only if you had patiently read through. What other features do you expect the tablet to have considering the price tag. Features does not exclude content, be broad minded.
Ipad is not the most sophisticated tablet or one with the highest specs but d apple store delivers on content and that's what the world needs content.
The kindle fire is definitely cool and that has been proved by maintaining the top spot in amazon store and the large nos of pre-orders will run into millions even before it becomes available.

texazzpete:

I implore you to flee from lies. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has not been released anywhere in the world. Always strive to speak the truth at all times.

I have always warned you earlier, never be too fast to pull the trigger, its not a first shooters game. A mix-up with 8.9 which doesn't ve much difference with 7.0 and 7.7.

texazzpete:

We are talking about this Kindle Fire NOW, not any future version. Please restrict your analysis to this.

Yes the kindle fire has all it takes to sour above every other tablet in terms of sales purchases. This will be proved soon and They say Customer is always right.

texazzpete:

I don't know what you're smoking, but in case you've forgotten, data bundles in Nigeria have crippling data limits. I'd much rather have my 10Gb of music and videos on demand instead of having to stream them  every time I want to play music.
Cloud storage would be useless to you when you have to take a trip by road from Lagos to Benin.

Pipe low, don't make so much noise cos Some few years ago systems had a total of 6GB HDD. Make do with what have, no matter what storage can can never be enough.Even the ipad2 cant contain just 3 blueray movies. So what's the shouting about?

texazzpete:

Cool story, but what has this got to do with this article?
The device was not made considering Nigeria factors. So stop asking the importance of the device for Nigerians, even at that a lot of Nigerians will get one considering the hiccups.

texazzpete:

iPad Rival =/= iPad killer.
Show me how many analysts called the Kindle Fire and iPad killer.
Just google Ipad killer, post the hits.

texazzpete:

iPad Rival =/= iPad killer.
Yes, the Kindle Fire will take some sales away from the iPad, but it's much more likely to hurt sales of regular Android tablets.

English Language, English Language, English Language,
All of these are technical jargons ipad killer, ipad rival, ipad destroyer, Apple shivers, apple re-strategies etc. It all depends on the meaning you want to give to those words. If the tables sours above the ipad in terms of sales, it will have killed the ipad in the sense that the Apple ipad currently maintains from 50% to 90% of tablets sold in different countries each year. so what are we talking about

This should only move apple to consider a lower pricing for the ipad while delivering on content or produce a lower end device to capture the market. yes i foresee one of these options.

texazzpete:

You speak with wisdom!
As someone who purchased over 4 Nook Colors in the past, i'm looking forward to buying a couple of Kindle Fires just to play around with. They'll make excellent gifts too  grin

Wont be surprised if you're congratulating yourself  shocked, so you mean you can manage to use one in Nigeria.
I think i only need the kindle touch with 3g.
I'm back to the farms
Phones / Re: Amazon's Kindle Fire Tablet: Ipad And Galaxy Tab's Possible Rival by Djcn: 10:45pm On Oct 03, 2011
4llerbuntu:

its WIFI only, just like the nook color.

whilst its not a total deal breaker for me, (i can mifi with my fone), it is for the absolute majority of pple in nigeria.

plus just 8gb? with no expandable storage. and it wont be developer friendly too coso of the absence of SD card. one would need a pc everytime to do anything and recovery will be difficult in the event of mishaps.

so its a niche device, its primarily a reader with fancy bells and whistles and some color.

Its not like the nook colour cos the nook was initially shipped without an app store and was really designed to be an e-reader first. It was only rooted to serve as a tablet, but the fire has  Amazon's Appstore for Android built-in from the get-go and is truly a multi-use tablet with integrated video and music apps along with gaming capabilities. Again you dont need a pc everytime, you can easily sync with the cloud or a wireless storage.

nateevs:

Absolute crap. What's the point of it? Save for the tight integration with Amazon services it's DOA.
Why buy a device you cannot access Android market with when you can find one with access the the market and then download a Kindle app.
Dont be clueless, you can access the android market but not the Google Android Market, you can be rest assured that some top apps will be replicated on the Amazon App Store soon, and the device can be rooted to have access to the full android store.

dtw_sola:

It's ok for what it is. and the price point. The 7" fire was not meant to be an ipad competitor. It is simply a device to access Amazon's media services. I think the size is perfect though. I am one of the few that thinks the iPad is to big for continuous use, so I might get one of these. I'm pretty sure it will be hacked to access the Android marketplace soon after arrival, but my main gripe is the lack of a camera (that alone kills a lot of possible apps). I suspect the 10" kindle fire (2012 release?) will be an actual competitor of the Ipad, but not this one. But since it doesn't have 3g, it's pretty much useless in Naija.

Sure, rooting has been confirmed. An android is an android. With close to a 100,000 pre-orders from America ONLY on the first day of release it will be a tablet to beat. The greatest draw-back is the 3g version but i see one coming up next year along with the 10'' kindle.
Phones / Re: Amazon's Kindle Fire Tablet: Ipad And Galaxy Tab's Possible Rival by Djcn: 12:13pm On Oct 03, 2011
texazzpete:

Here's a quick tip: Do not be so eager to air your ignorance out in public.

The Amazon kindle fire is nowhere near the 'best 7 inch table in existence'
it lacks a microphone, bluetooth and camera. It has only 8GB and is not expandable. It has no access to the Android market

There are several 7 inch Honeycomb tablets out there with the full google experience and better hardware specs. Not to even mention the imminent Galaxy Tab 7 with a 1.5Ghz dual core processor.

What the Kindle fire has going for it is its price and its access to Amazon's goodies. But as i said earlier, this is nearly useless to Nigerian customers who will not be able to stream music and video from Amazon Prime.

So I ask you again, apart from the price, what other killer features does it have for the Nigerian customer?

Nobody (and I repeat NOBODY!!) is daft enough to call the Kindle Fire an 'iPad Killer'. It probably will help kill several other Android tablets, though, but the iPad will sit very prettily on the top for a while to come.

Looking at your posts, it is very clear, that you are a bigoted ifan and that has always made it difficult for you to adress issues objectively and realistically. Learn to control ur "iemotions" so as to refraim from insults and address issues accordingly.

Firstly. I'm sorry, you have nothing to tell me about the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 which has been my bedtime pet for some days. But ask yourself despite all the buzz, ads and waves, what are the sales indices?

Secondly, be patient enough to read my posts before being prickly. I had earlier mentioned that it won't have everything (u've mentioned then) did you miss that? The ipad1 sold for a premium but lacked the basic camera which was already a feature in basic phones, or u've forgotten. This is Fire1 why not be patient for the next fire since you know its gonna be an annual affair?
Besides, you need to know that the real solution to storage is the cloud, so what are you shouting about? when you have unlimited storage space in the cloud. Guy, u should know better.

Thirdly, I dont know if Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, HTC and the other top players consider the Nigeria market factor before making their premium devices. Why is your iphone not subsidized by a telecoms operator? What's the no of ipads sold in Nigeria during the last quarter? Why cant you purchase directly from ebay and other online retailers? Why do a number of websites deny you access with your nigeria IP even when you are willing to pay for the services? The list goes on. We're to develop our content tex. The Nigeria market contributes less or nothing and have always lacked the necessary support from the local players and lacks accurate stats for planing and implementation.

Well i might not call it an ipad killer but was perplexed with the dozens of leading newspapers, magazines and blogs titling the "ipad killer", so maybe you should consume them up.

PCmag columnist C.DVORAK, who have always been an apple fanboy since the 80's even said this is the only ipad rival, he has seen.

Before making your next post, why not take in a deep breadth of cool fresh air, think and then post.

Please mention the 'so much cool features' you're talking about.

The main killer points are the price and the tight integration into Amazon's services. You've already mentioned the price before and the Amazon services (streaming music, video etc) are pretty much US only at release. So what other features?

You are asking of Its cool features, well i thought you should know better cos i ve sought of been in an island.
its not just about the price tag, its about offering premium products at non-premium prices.
For a tablet of this kind, its actually worth much more than the price tag.

The kindle fire is the best and most affordable 7'' tablet in existence.

For the ff reasons

Lightweight (almost half the weight of the ubiquitous ipad2)
Fits comfortably in one hand
It has flash
8hrs of battery life
Amazon Silk (loads web pages faster)
Free Amazon Cloud Backup
WhisperSync For Movies and TV Shows
wireless mirroring and native streaming media

Whats more, all these with an Amazon Prime membership, there's definitely no better bargain.

Hey, i sure know it doesn't include "everything" and that's why we'll always need a 2nd generation but for now the
Kindle Fire is a 7-inch tablet in a 10-inch tablet world the Ipad's killer

Android vs Iphone vs Blackberry vs etc, on and on it goes
Interesting i use none of these, but use what serves me best, i have always observed that the best phone might not be the most expensive and not the most popular.
Well Android is fast gaining ground and will continue as such and have overtaken over iphone in the Top 5 EU countries.
There is no basis for comparison between the  galaxy s2 and iphone 4 as the s2 surpasses it in every respects. Even at that, i when it comes to the user experience, that's a different ball game altogether. So its up to you to get what serves you best.
