Phones / First Blackberry Flip Smartphone by Djcn: 8:59am On Oct 14, 2008
While the smartphone world is moving toward touchscreen technology, Research in Motion on Monday partnered with T-Mobile to announce the first BlackBerry flip phone.

The Pearl Flip 8220 boasts multimedia capabilities, including RIM's mobile push e-mail solution, text and picture messaging, mobile Web browsing, and built-in W-Fi that targets consumers who frequently share pictures, check sports scores, and access social-networking sites.

Beyond the flip design, the new model also boasts advanced multimedia capabilities through video recording and playback, a 2.0-megapixel camera with digital zoom, stereo Bluetooth support, and an external memory card slot.

"The BlackBerry Pearl Flip takes all the advanced features and refined usability that customers have come to expect from BlackBerry smartphones and makes them available in a friendly and innovative design

Computers / World's First Unbreakable Encryption Unveiled by Djcn: 8:35am On Oct 14, 2008
Perfect secrecy has come a step closer with the launch of the world's first computer network protected by unbreakable quantum encryption at a scientific conference in Vienna.

Quantum cryptography is completely different from the kinds of security schemes used on computer networks today.

These are typically based on complex mathematical procedures which are extremely hard for outsiders to crack but not impossible given sufficient computing resources or time.

But quantum systems use the laws of quantum theory, which have been shown to be inherently unbreakable

All quantum security schemes are based on the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, on the fact that you cannot measure quantum information without disturbing it," .

"Because of that, one can have a communications channel between two users on which it's impossible to eavesdrop without creating a disturbance. An eavesdropper would create a mark on it. That was the key idea."

In practice this means using the ultimate quantum objects: photons, the "atoms of light". Incredibly faint beams of light equating to single photons fired a million times a second raced between the nodes.

Can the world expect perfect encryption and secrecy?
Computers / Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by Djcn: 8:21am On Oct 14, 2008
The setup is actually across two different OS platforms. Leopard to Vista.

Well, can others come up with threads to solve problems on other OS? Ex, bigrover and co?
Computers / Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by Djcn: 5:07pm On Oct 13, 2008
Thx with this thread, i've really benefited a lot.

An issue i still face is setting up my VPN to work with vista. It doesn't get through.

MY point is,
He achieved a feat and he's viewed as a genuis.
No one invented the internet.
Blacks should appreciate their fellows and even promote them rightly.
Computers / Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by Djcn: 11:37am On Oct 13, 2008
It's interesting to note that, i haven't even mention my most used OS, which is neither Mac or Vista. Many at times it is ridiculous for TV and Film producers to say thrash about OS, nothing they know anything about.
Do u know what it takes to program a single digital display, learn that and ur orientation will change for the rest of your life. Or better still concentrate on ur TV and Film productions cos they are still below the minimum standards.

@Bigrover, Thx 4 ur posts, i have never favoured an OS over another, different folks for different strokes but i don't get impressed when computer illiterates just speak as if they knows what such tasks involves. U shd know what that means.
Computers / Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by Djcn: 9:32am On Oct 13, 2008
It's now, u're talking. It's ur opinion and ur opinion is a fallacy and i have nothing to do about that.
Kudos to Nairaland for giving u d opportunity to speak abusively of someone u know nothing about.
many of u SHOUT on forums but simply know nothing, if u're up for a contest i can meet with u, and maybe we'll meet someday.
Computers / Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by Djcn: 7:48am On Oct 13, 2008
@Sojio, You post is a very short one but shows you lack even the fundamantal knownledge of Computing.
For you information, no OS is trouble-free and no company claims such, U don't know much about Mac as much as i do, and i can even send u my programs and source codes that i developed for the mac platform six years ago, when u don't even have a mac.
and i would'n bother posting after this, because u've already failed the first test and u know nothing about programming.
Computers / Re: Philip Emeagwali – Genius Or Crook? by Djcn: 7:19am On Oct 13, 2008
I hope every thread will not turn out to be a D and E thread.

Most of the issues u raised were already thrashed in my earlier post.

When he won the award, he had his computer cranking over more numbers per second for doing geophysical simulations than anyone else had in the past.

Supercomputing is not a "narrow field." Historically, the supercomputer of today is the computer of tomorrow. The supercomputer is to the computer what the heavy champion is to boxing. The latter may not be pound-for-pound the best fighter, but punch-for-punch he is the toughest.

It simply means that applications in super computers will most likely end up in desktops some day, do u admit to the fact that the so called supercomps of the 2nd generation is equivalent to ur system?

My question is can the White House, CNN, BBC, Inventors directory Time Mag, and even Apple Corp all be wrong. They all claim he made a contribution.
Supercomputiing and the Internet are two different ball games but depending on how u look at it they can still share some similarities.

My dear friend let's not mix up political issues with scientific ones. The perceptive of Bush's statement is a different issue from this one and your statement only goes to show that the western world blackmails the black continent. My cousin once told me of watching programs in US TVs that potrays blacks as people living on trees.

I can give u dozens of individuals that many persons thought of as achieving the first feat but that would not really help here.

Santos who achieved the first flight in the world and is promoted by the brazilians but the American press promotes the Wright Brothers.

You think Thomas Edison invented the Light bulb? Sorry he was not. Joseph Swan did but the  American press continues to promote Edisson even though the US court ruled in favor of Joseph Swan.

Now tell me, how will all these notions be corrected?

Emegwali achieved a feat, that was not achieved until he did.Did you did was considered at that time to be one of the 20 national grand challenges in science and engineering at that time?

It is very easy to say, his achievement has no impact, fine but how many of us can achieve that feat, why didn't the Americans did it even though they owned the Connection Machine.

How many persons have the savvy to go though a 1000 pages of complex maths.

Ex, how about ur FPS game developement, How's is it going? We would want u to give us a feat that has not been achieved.
I ve been much involved in on some research involving quantum computing. It is a completely abstract science invloving abstract maths and maybe with abstract applications. I know what i'm currently going through and if i achieve something at the end of the tunnel. i hope to be celebrated.
Thx
Computers / Re: Philip Emeagwali – Genius Or Crook? by Djcn: 9:46pm On Oct 12, 2008
Well, this is a nice and interesting topic, but funny enough i can be on any side and still give facts for my posts.
Actually, the man has some controversial history and that is so because of various writters and views.
In the light of the above, it is very easy to get the facts, for one i always tell anyone that the internet has more falsehood than truth in it, and so the fact that a website contains some information does not necessarily mean it is true. I can create a website and feed it with whatever information i like.

even at that, there are sites which are official sites, and they contain authentic information,
Well, i dont want to be involved in a debate with anyone, but i find some flaws almost in every posts in this thread concerning Philip Emeagwali.

Starting with the poster, Philip Emeagwali won the Gordon Bell prize alone in the year he won it. He was the only individual to win the Gordon Bell Prize alone while eight researchers from MIT shared the other Gordon Bell Prize. The fact is that an 8-man MIT team tied with only one-man. Check the Gordon site for details.

The word "fastest computer" can be used in a relative sense and could sometimes be a confusing term. For those who care, check out facts about fastest supercomputers ever built and you will see that most times it depends on the purpose of the comp and who the criterias used for assessment.

As far as I'm aware, he's never designed or built a computer in his life, and there is no claim to that even in his website. The Gordon Bell prize he won was for a numerical achievement; the highest number of floating point operations per second achieved when using the computer for a particular application domain. In other words, at the time he won the award, he had his computer cranking over more numbers per second for doing geophysical simulations than anyone else had in the past. This was not an influencial project because there was no published papers for this research.

The Gordon bell's prize can be viewed as a "supercomputing's Nobel Prize". The Gordon Bell prize has $5,000 while the Turing has $25,000 while the Nobel Prize has one million dollars. The Field's Medal is called the Nobel Prize of mathematics yet it has zero financial reward. So the cash rewards doesn't matter.

The Turing Award is not a supercomputing award. For the record, the Gordon Bell prize is supercomputing's top prize and by default the Nobel Prize of supercomputing. The IEEE Gordon Bell Prize-winning works are published in IEEE publications and publicly defended at the annual Supercomputing conference which draws 10,000 attendees. The Turing Award is a private closed-door selection process.
Both awards are of different classes, has a link with ACM and the Turing awards also boasts of the equivalent nobel in computing.

His biography [emeagwali.info] claimed "41 discoveries" while  secondary sources claimed " patents."  The fact remains that he filed patents has never been disputed by any sources even the USPTO.

You have submitted 41 inventions to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office concerning seven technologies. Can you give us expanded details?

Philip Emeagwali - Inventors are reluctant to provided expanded details of their inventions until they receive full patent protection. The reason is that the Patent and Trademark Office can deny patents to inventors that publicly provided details of their invention. More on the inventors site

http://inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa111097a.htm

Philip Emeagwali was never a "father of the Internet" and made no significant contributions to the Internet's development. Philip Emeagwali did not invent the Internet. Pls don't forget that there are myths that about Tim Berners-Lee, and Al Gore also inventing the internet. No one invented the internet. Contributors includes

Leonard Kleinrock
J.C.R. Licklider
Larry G. Roberts .
Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf
Radia Perlman

There is a difference between the web and the internet, someone is credited for inventing the car but wheels were already in existence even before the car was dreamed of, and so it goes. The web is the most integral part of the internet. The Time magazine, CNN, BBC and white house could not all have been wrong. They acknowledge his contributions to the internet.

If he is hailed as one of the fathers of the internet? The question i often ask is who are those hailing him? If the professionals are those hailing him then everyone should keep his mouth shut, otherwise the reverse also becomes true.

Nevertheless, based on the Bell Prize, he has since received numerous further awards, ranging from one from the World Bank-IMF Africa Club to being voted the "35th-greatest African of all time" in a survey by New African magazine. He has a number of awards.

His achievements were quoted in a speech by Bill Clinton as an example of what Nigerians could achieve when given the opportunity. The President of the United States as you know has computer scientists review the transcript of his televised speech for technical accuracy.

There are a dozen University of Michigan publications hailed Emeagwali as a genius whom the university officials spent three years courting. In the citiation below, the university's flagship publication called "Michigan Today" (February 1991) devoted a special issue on his work. The latter issue on Emeagwali was mailed to the university's 400,000 alumni.

Americans promotes theirs, the Britons do the same and sometimes i always come to realize that there is so much hype by western media of their nationals, many of which are untrue and we are forced to believe such. If nobody hypes Philip, his records speakes for himself and he has managed to survived in a stiffed-neked American society, who can sometimes view blacks as non-achievers.
Most of the websites serves as distractions and this applies to many others, if u read some posts about Bill gates, Steve Jobs, Linux Tolvards and others u think they not accomplished anything in this world. I know you would understand better.

SOURCES: Documents from the IEEE, Association for Computing Machinery, the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, The White House, seven universities (including the University of Michigan), dozens of books in Amazon.com.

Pls some persons are used to quoting from websites published by anonymous authors. Confirm such claims first.
If the university of michigan says he was a genius, i would not argue.

I believe everyone is a genuis.

Corrections are welcomed.

Sneak Peek

The Company's General holds the sixth and final Scylla card.
Sara has the opportunity to take revenge for her suffering at the hands of Gretchen.
Don Self and Scofield meet Gretchen in a church of all places - and agree to unite.
T-Bag has an unwanted visit from Mr Phang.
Sucre and Burrows plan to stage a very important car crash.
Several of Scofield's gang pose as paramedics.
One of the key cast members is shot. But who??

Self and Michael stroll down the aisle in a church. Self tells him to relax. They step forward and we see Gretchen. “First off, Panama was a job,” Gretchen says. “Some other time,” Michael says. He asks her about Scylla and why she wants it. She says she wants the same thing, to bring back the Company. Michael tells her great, hand over the papers.

Gretchen says that she wants some money first. “It’s a package deal. Are we partners?” she asks. “Partners,” Michael says with daggers in his eyes.

Back at GATE, T-Bag tells Gretchen that he can’t trust Michael. “Trust me, Scofield will use you and then bury the knife in your back for what you did to his lady friend.”

In walks our friend Mr. Feng. “Where’s Scylla?” they ask. A gun is quickly pointed at T-Bag’s head.

Michael and Sara sit in a car. Michael calls Sucre to see how they are doing. He’s sitting with Lincoln in another car as a police officer rolls past. Mahone looks through binoculars and tracks a car. Radios everyone to say, “the general is leaving.”

Sara preps her needle for the car accident. Lincoln tells Sucre that it doesn’t take two people to crash a car.

It's very good that everyone has something to say. Everyone with different views and ideas. I think the argument should be between AMD and Intel cos the pentiums is already history. Turions perform better than any pentium system, cos they employ different technoloy and are of different processor generation. It'll make more sense comparing comparing the duo core with the turions. turions are still been developed and now we have the Turion Ultra which is a high end mobile chip.
Phones / Re: From Benin To London: Glo Bids For Newcastle Fc Too? by Djcn: 10:54am On Oct 08, 2008
The Chairman of Glob-acom Limited, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., has denied any link with a Nigerian consortium bidding for the take-over of English Premier League side, Newcastle United.
Adenuga said he had never at any time discussed nor met with any agent linked with the club.
A statement from Ade-nuga’s office described as false recent reports linking his name and business to the said transaction and warned that the public should discountenance the reports.
According to the statement, “the report linking the name and business of Dr. Mike Adenuga to the proposed take-over of Newcastle United is patently false and misleading. Dr. Adenuga is not part of any consortium bidding for Newcastle and he has never met any agent or group concerning the said take-over.”
The statement said for the avoidance of doubt, Adenuga was at present committed to raising the stature of African football and that explains his deep involvement in the sponsorship of the annual Glo-CAF Awards and readiness to sponsor other football events on the continent.
It also pointed out that Adenuga’s passion for African football had manifested in the sponsorship of the game in West Africa, noting that, “he will continue to support all agencies and stakeholders to ensure the continued development and promotion of the game across all levels on the continent”.
Globacom, founded by Adenuga, was in 2002 licensed as the Second National Carrier to operate a bouquet of telecommunications services and products in Nigeria.
The company, which has acquired over 20 million subscribers since it rolled out its mobile services in 2003 in Nigeria alone, has since expanded to other African countries such as Benin Republic and Ghana.
Globacom has been the Official Sponsor of the Nigeria Premier League known as the Globacom Premier League.
The firm is also the Official Sponsor of all the National Teams of Nigeria and exclusive official partner of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The sponsorship fee of the Globacom Premier League rose from N500 million for the first four years (2002-2006) to N4.2 billion for the next four years (2006-2010).

Thanks for your tips but you to note the following.
I think the issues of vlite and nlite has already been treated by microsoft.
I had installed it in feb 07 but later had to remove it.

Note the following.

Microsoft does not recommend using any tool to strip out applications from Windows Vista prior to installing it on your system, as it may affect your ability to download future Windows updates and service packs, and may cause your system to become unstable.

You may experience more problems when your system begins to misbehave.

As advised by the poster, u have to be a geek or u might end up toying with ur system.

Anyway good software.

While i was in V.I, i get speed of 300kpbs but since i'm out the services have been very poor and could only browse on the GPRS platform. They should role out rapidly.
Computers / Re: Why Buy Hp When There's Acer? by Djcn: 12:25pm On Oct 03, 2008
For the online gaming, Our desktops and laptops can better serve that purpose.
These guys can still be connected online for playing online games. Basically the most damanding component is the GPU and as u said if the netbooks are fitted with 3D advance gaming capabilities that can be compared to those in notebooks, then what i see is a gradual progression from notebooks to nettops, and this is very logical, computers in the first generation were as big as houses but the power can be compared to those in mobile phones today, systems are becoming more powerful but smaller, the least of systems manufactured today far exceeds any in the fourth generation, Laptops are now paralleing their desktop counterparts and as i've said before, notebook sales have now exceed their desktop counterparts, and this is expected to continue.
If all cloud computing will do for us is to help us execute threads and processes "up in the cloud'' then we dont really need much processing power.

Now netbooks is replacing the terms "small and light notebooks, ultraportable and ultralight laptops"
Processors are becoming smaller, 32nm in the making, GPUs more powerful and memory more plentiful, i know we ll get there,

i got this from a site while comparing notebooks vs netbooks

Netbooks versus Notebooks: The New Age Mindshare Battle

While the lines between notebooks and netbooks have been drawn, it's still hard for most people to appreciate the differences between both machines. Most people still consider the burgeoning netbook market as part of the notebook market, while few see it for what it really is, another segregation of the already saturated portable market with yet another device gunning for your consumer dollars.

Netbooks and notebooks aren't any different when you get down to the basics; both devices share pretty similar features, which is why most people tend to lump them both together in the same category. Designed with portability in mind, netbooks and notebooks are computers for users on the go with programs for both work and entertainment. Factor in a keyboard, a LCD screen, hard drive, speakers and internet capability, the line between both machines becomes smudged despite our earlier statements to the contrary. The key difference the netbook offers is its smaller form factor and leaner hardware for longer useage periods, but is limited in its processing capabilities and is more optimal for simple Internet-based usage. These however will change in the future.

4 the iphone 3G, well let's hope we ll get there but i thing MTN is capable of bearing the charges as they did in S.A.
The G1 is due for sales in two weeks time and there is already a hot air blowing around. well, we'll see when we get it.

Computer Games
There's been much news on this PC gaming stuffs, On BBC, Skynews, Discovery and CNN. It is proposed that gamers that drive may get insurance benefits in the US. I think there's now some good sides to PC games than was formerly realised.

It's true building a gaming u can use softcooling or the newer Air conditioners, simple yet very very effective. i hope the PC will not produce ice blocks. grin grin grin

You got some nice work to do. I'm mostly interested in non-action games and adventures and have never though of building one.
I think u kind of need a server if u're much interested in games creations. A high end system indeed

UDP vs TCP
The truth is that as long as u dealing with games u forget everything about TCP.
UDP is much faster than TCP because there's no extra overhead for error-checking.
Online games require constant fast transmission of data will require UDP.
The major difference is drawn between fast transmission and reliability of data. For Reliability then TCP.
Thx

Computers / Re: Why Buy Hp When There's Acer? by Djcn: 8:57pm On Oct 02, 2008
@Ex, most times, i feel more comfortable when people refer to the particular kind of OS they use instead of generalizing it. Someone can be using Windows, mac, Linux etc but it makes more sense saying u're using Tiger, XP, Redhat and the others, was just trying to make a point,

That Acer stuff was really cool, but i'll still prefer building my gaming rig with my bare hands, the only problem is the unavailability of component parts in this country. This is a kind of country where the consumers are ahead of the marketers. When i requested for a Quad core processor in Lagos some few months ago, i was told they not heard of something like that.

Now imagine, if the Apple 3G phone can be released in countries like mali, Egypt and other poor countries, i dont know why it's not been released here despite the large consumer base.

on the cloud stuff, it is only natural that we make progress, and i know with time we will get there. there has been much support of this concept with the likes of Amazon, IBM, yahoo and google doing what they know how to do best. The cloud is the next step, but then the laptops and desktops will still play their roles, cos the netbooks and nettops cant make up for the gamers machines.

Do someone out there know that computer games can actually help improve your maths, well u can check on the link above for a BBC report.

Computers / Re: Why Buy Hp When There's Acer? by Djcn: 2:58pm On Oct 01, 2008
@flyuche, as expected it's always normal for everyone to express his or her feelings concerning a particular project. Those criticisms are valid but however they can assist in redefining cloud computing.
Most times if guy are not in aggrement with others, all they do is tounge lashing a particular project.
When Intel withdrew from the OLPC project, it blasted the project and embarked on a similar project.
When Apple, IBM and others decided to create the Taligent stuffs, Microsoft kicked against it.
In the world today, most guys are just fighting for their own interests.

The emergence of Netbooks is even seen as a treat to established companies like Microsoft, IBM, Apple, HP and others. The fact remains that most are cheap in the market.

I was watched a documentary some time ago on two cars with 99% similarities in the making but with different brands, the manufacturers know quite well about this, but to you and i, we will keep arguing on that matter.

@EX, u had spoken of FreeBSD earlier, i last worked with version 4.0 a long time ago and ever since lost interest. running 3 OS on my desktop system i'm considering installing the FreeBSD OS again, cos it has really become cooler, secured and with much more support. I'm however struggling with a slow internet connection from my ISP and downloading above 10MB is a nightmare.
I was chatting with a guy in Finland who was speaking of downloading full HD DVD movies in just a few minutes. I just wonder where that can be done in this country. I've got a lot of work to do but still squezzing out time to write proposals for broadband access in this country. we surely need it. I know the western world have gotten there as japan is even offering Home users 8Mbps subscription services. In Nigeria i wounder how many so called ISP's can even boast of that bandwidth.

INFO ON LINUX.

You spoke of Linux as being suitable for Netbooks et al, well Linux is a GENERIC term and has over 300 different distributions ranging from servers to microcontrollers.
From embedded systems to supercomputers.
What i'm trying to say is that in any hardware platform Linux can be designed or modified to suit that need.

Linux is supported by corporations such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Novell, Oracle Corporation, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems and a host of companies, so it is a universal thing. It remains the most widely ported OS.

it now runs on a more diverse range of computer architectures than any other operating system: It is now used on mac systems despite the closed arch,
in the hand-held ARM-based iPAQ
the mainframe IBM System z9,
The µClinux kernel fork can run on systems without a memory management unit.
MS sometime created their own version
All these are achievable not becos of anything else other than the kernel and the developers.

Microsoft has a proprietry windows xp OS for netbooks, i don't know if u've seen the one on the OLPC project which can dual boot with a version of Linux.
Following the confirmation of 20 OEM to deliver windows xp on netbooks, a press statement was released, i believe some 3 months ago to continue to offer windows xp far more than the 2014 date fixed before.

Pls note: This applies only for Netbooks and Nettops, and an aggrement was recently signed with the world's leading OEM for this contract. xp still tops in the no of installed os.

Phones / Etisalat Launches New Service Called Homezone. by Djcn: 9:46am On Sep 30, 2008
With more than 11 million hits for its uchoose website in a single week, etisalat Nigeria's 5th GSM company has come with another offer called HOMEZONE. The Network is already set to launch its services in October.

Homezone is an innovative feature from Etisalat that will empower customers with the power to choose and register any area of their choice nationwide in the launch cities, and in other cities subsequently, as their Homezone. On this highly unique plan, calls within the registered Homezone attract discounted costs compared to calls made in other areas. This means that customers can register any area they spend most of their time as their Homezone and thus enjoy discounted call rates every time they make calls from this zone.

http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=123917

Homezone can be anywhere there is Etisalat network coverage and they can make calls at anytime of the day or night from this zone and pay less; no on or off peak time to worry about, he said. Hear him, "Anyone can take advantage of this opportunity to truly talk more for less as long as they register their Homezone on the Etisalat network. It costs nothing to register but the benefits are immense for the customer.

For instance, workers who spend a large percentage of their days in their offices can choose their office area as their Homezone. Businessmen can choose the areas where they spend a greater percentage of their time as their Homezone. Market men and women can do the same. Students can choose their schools as their Homezone. In short, you can register anywhere as your Homezone."

After giving Nigerians the opportunity to choose numbers that have a special meaning to them with 0809uchoose for free. This is the first time this has ever happened in this market. We are further reinforcing the power of choice that we offered with 0809uchoose by giving them an opportunity to talk more and pay less when they register their Homezone on the Etisalat network. The Homezone can be anywhere they spend the majority of their time. For every call they make in this zone, they save money because they pay a lot less than anywhere else

The Homezone will be as flexible as the lifestyles of the various customers.

well, i'll prefer these guys to work at home cos there's still much work to be done. If half of that investment is pumped into globacom, forget it they ll become a world class brand. instead of buying some English clubs with millions of dollars they should work at home.
They should not compare themselves with those arabian guys, those guys have golden teeth and besides the economy of their country is well stabilized.

@EX, u're right, 90% of hardware manufactured pass through asia's factories and then maybe couppled or packaged elsewhere. Americans and Europe don't manufacture stuffs like that but only contact these to companies in Taiwan, China, Malaysia and others. The companies only follow the instructions and details of the manufacturing process, these are later advertized to the American market, who are the world's greatest shoppers and the trend moves on and on.

Do someone out there knows that ur display screen, processor, memory and other chips are made of SAND. Yes, i mean SAND.
The next time u buy that cool and geeky gadget, just know that sand was processed to bring out the beauty in it.
