Washington (AFP) – United States President Barack Obama voiced his anger and sadness after the country’s latest deadly shooting, this time at an Oregon community college, and made another impassioned plea for gun control legislation.
“There has been another mass shooting in America,” a stony-faced Obama said in reaction to the shooting by a male gunman at Umpqua Community College in rural Roseburg, which left 10 people dead.
“Somehow this has become routine,” said the president. “We become numb to this.”
“The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine,” said the president, making his 15th statement on a mass shooting since taking office in 2009.
“And what’s become routine, of course, is the response of those who oppose any kind of common sense gun legislation.”
Obama reiterated his frustration at the failure of the Republican-controlled Congress to back new gun control measures, and threw down the gauntlet to lawmakers.
“Prayers are not enough,” he said. “We can actually do something about it, but we’re going to have to change our laws.”
“This is a political choice we make,” Obama said. “This is not something I can do myself. I have to have a Congress and state legislatures and governors who are willing to work with me on this.”
“It cannot be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun.”

A 33 year old woman from New York, Jennifer Berry, has been charged with murder in the death of her newborn baby girl after the child was allegedly thrown to her death from a 7th floor window on Monday.

The infant girl was found dead in the courtyard of Jennifer Berry boyfriend's apartment, and police report indicates that she still had her umbilical cord attached when she was found.

The boyfriend of the accused told the police that he was in another room when the whole incident happened and did not know when Jennifer gave birth or threw the baby from the window. He further said that he did not even realise his girlfriend was pregnant.

Meanwhile, the police are yet to figure out the time frame between the baby's birth and her fall from the window.

A twenty-four year old Nigerian, Bobai Ephraim Kato, has built a fully functional artificial intelligence robot for his final year project at the International College of Business and Technology (ICBT) in Sri Lanka.
After his secondary school education in Nigeria in 2009, he wrote JAMB exams twice trying to get an admission into Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria to study medicine, but all to no avail. He couldn’t get into the remedial school at ABU, and Kaduna State University (KASU) did not accept him either. It was not until he started a program at KASU’s remedial school that opportunity presented itself through the NIIT (National Institute of Information Technology) scholarship exam. Kato’s success story took shape over the next four years as he eventually ended up in Sri Lanka and studied Software Engineering.


Kato admits that the idea of artificial intelligence was random. The knowledge he gained from previous classes on Artificial Intelligence Systems set the pace for his work with the robot. His first work with Artificial Intelligence was “Wine Quality Test”, a piece of software which uses artificial intelligence to determine the quality of wine. When the directive came to his class to create software that uses Artificial Intelligence for predictions and solutions, he couldn’t think of anything. It was not until he did some research that the idea of a robot, which could solve puzzles struck him.


A Nigerian Software Engineering student, Kato personally built and developed the algorithm that enabled the robot to solve a Rubik’s Cube in a matter of minutes – a feat he admits to have never achieved himself.
Kato, who hails from the Atyap tribe in Karina said, “ My first 5 tests were a failure. The robot always shot a scanning error, and this was a week to my final submission. All I could do was pray. I didn’t know what to do again. I was confused and restless. I kept grinding and it finally started working. At that stage, the robot wasn’t intelligent enough and I had to train it to solve many puzzles to get more skills to save in the database.”
Kato spent two nights building the robot. After construction, he installed the software which served as the brain into a memory card for testing. A week to Kato’s final submission, the robot was still not functional. It took six tries to get the robot to work, and then a few days to increase its intelligence quotient. It was hard work for Kato, as he could not solve the Rubik’s Cube himself.
In the spirit of giving back, his new focus is on forensic computing, cyber security, and digital investigation, which he hopes to put to full use when he goes back to Nigeria.
“I’m happy to return back to Nigeria as a Cyber Security and Digital forensic Tech,” he says. “If anything, that’s what Nigeria needs more. We need people who are savvy and sincere in Digital Investigation, Cyber Security and Forensic

Dozens of Nigerians care workers have been arrested in immigration raids across long and being held at various removal centres. The care workers were arrested for allegedly over staying their visas and have been told they will be forcibly removed from UK on a charter flight on Tuesday, reports The Guardian.


The UK Home Office Confirms that immigration enforcement officers conducted a simultaneous raids at residential addresses across London on 7 and 8 September, arrested and detained 34 care workers while another 21 were served with immigration documents and placed on temporary release.

“The intelligence led operation was conducted in response to allegations that foreign nationals have been using forged documentations to gain employment illegally as carers,” said a spokesman for The Home Office.

Australia is set to deny Chris Brown's visa application to tour the country, in a bid to tackle domestic violence, according to the country's Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton.


The American artist, who was convicted in 2009 for assaulting his then girlfriend, Rihanna, was issued with a "notice of intention to consider refusal", just a day before tickets to his "One Hell of a Nite" tour were due to go on sale.

Brown has 28 days to present his case as to why his visa application should be approved.

Peter Dutton also said, "Decisions on whether a visa will or will not be issued are made after the 28 days time frame and consideration of the material presented to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection".

The decision to ban the 26 year old performer was suggested by recently appointed Minister of Women, Michaelia Cash, on Friday as new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull unveiled a 100 million Australian Dollar (US$70 million) package to address violence in families.


It should be recalled that Chris Brown had previously toured Australia in 2011 and 2012 and is due to perform in four Australian cities of Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, from December 9-16.

As reported by AlJazeera, at least 21 people have been killed and 100 wounded in Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic as Muslims and Christians clashed in a mainly-Christian neighbourhood, medical officials and witnesses have said.

According to a witness, the attack, which happened on Saturday came after a Muslim man was killed and his body was found dumped in the street.

Two years of violence, which erupted after Muslim Seleka rebels seized power in the majority-Christian country in 2013, has killed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes.

The fighting divided the country when Muslims were chased from the south.
There had not been any attacks in Bangui, which is secured by French and UN soldiers, for months until a grenade attack earlier in September.

In Saturday's incident, angry Muslims left their stronghold in the 3rd district of Bangui and attacked the largely-Christian 5th district using automatic weapons.
Residents fled to other parts of the capital and attackers burned houses and cars, witnesses said.

UN helicopters, part of a peacekeeping force, were seen hovering overhead.

An art student in Japan named Amy Goda did something amazing that leaves many people jaw dropped. She created gigantic arts works from the leftover straws from the harvest of rice on-going in Japan


Amy Goda, an aspiring artist of Niigata Prefecture in Japan created two enormous dinosaurs, a monstrous hissing cobra, a giant pinchy crab, an amazing praying mantis, and a giant duck that's actually flowing in water.

There is no doubt that Amy Goda is greatly talented.
