When regionalism is introduced, the center will become less powerful and unattractive. People will fight to become their various regional heads than become the president.

Are you really sure? Was that what happened during the time of Zik, Awo and Sarduana when we had regionalism?

afam4eva: I hate quota system and rotational presidency with a passion. The only way we can get rid of these archaic practice is to go back to regionalism where every region will be responsible for it's citizen, then they can run their regions the way they want.

Even if regionalism averts quota system at the national level, I do not see how it solves the question of rotational presidency. Each region will still want to have a go at ASO Rock.

Dudu_Negro: neither my friend. it continues to be an issue because we remain together. i advocate and support splitting nigeria so we are no longrr distressed by the pains of marginalisation.

If you split the country, are you guaranteed that subsets of groups in the different countries that will emerge from the carcass of Nigeria will not ask for rotational presidency and quota system?

Anyways, the aim of this thread is not to advocate splitting of the country but to find out why people who seem to be at home with quota system are not so with rotational presidency.

Dudu_Negro: they are both concepts of "equal opportunity". when you talk of equal opportunity in a society you are admitting there is a superior and inferior relationship, an imbalance of sort. when opportunity to participate is unevenly distributed then certainly some will be "discriminately" gated out.

discrimination is natural and physiologically is part of the survival kit in human gene. life is fair, it is never equal. equality can never be achieved in a country as ours, each part or people will always have and exercise their superiority or comparative advantage in the econo-socio-political landscape.

Do you support both or one?

Rotational presidency in relation to quota system:
The North wants quota system in everything (education, employment, political appointments, etc) to enable their subset catch up with the south
The East (and South South) want rotational presidency to enable all zones participate equally in leadership at the presidential level.

Do you support quota system but not rotational presidency? If so why?

actually, there is. It's called affirmative action. Special consideration is given to blacks, minorities and women above the mainstream white. Its been in existence for over 40 yrs now and many successful blacks benefitted from it. However, I'll admitt its very unpopular and calls have been made to end it. Some have even challenged it in court.

Affirmative action in the United States is meant for marginalized people. Is the North marginalized in Nigeria? They have ruled more than 3/4 of the time since independence. If anyone in Nigeria deserves quota system, should it be the North? BTW, what is your opinion on the issue of rotational presidency in relation to quota system (that you support)?

Hahahaha! The oil in Ondo is offshore. The North is fighting hard to abrogate the onshore-offshore dichotomy. When that happens, Ondo will be zero.

Hundreds of pregnant women and infants below the ages of one and three months, have been ejected from the industrial town of Ota in Ogun State.

They were asked to leave the ancient town for their various states like Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, etc. in observance of the Ogbodogi festival, a version of the popular, but dreaded Oro festival in the town.

There are conflicting reports about how long the annual festival would last. While some said it would last three weeks, others said it would last up to three months.

P.M.News learnt that the festival started last weekend, and there will be curfew from mid-night to about 4 a.m., each day throughout the period.

Pregnant women and infants were strictly warned to leave the town during the period of the festival. In a chat with the Moslem leader in the town, Alfa Abdulraheem Ola Ajifenwa, he stated that the festival had been modernised, adding that in the past it used to last for three months.

He further said that he did not foresee a clash between the traditionalists and Moslems in the town during the Ramadan, for the festival will last till the Muslim fasting period, for about two days.

Said he: “The traditionalists have a lot of respect for Islam because the Olota of Ota, Oba Moshood Alani Oyede, is himself a Muslim.”

P.M.News further learnt that the monarch used his influence to reduce the duration of the festival. Pastor John Okiki, who also spoke with P.M.News, revealed that many of the landlords in the town have put their houses under lock and key pending the conclusion of the festival.

Okiki explained that those travelling to their states are those who don’t have relations or friends to put up with in neighbouring towns like Ipaja, Agege, Abule Egba, etc.

As at the time of filing this report, the king was said to be unavailable to comment on the festival. But his secretary, Mrs. Busirat Lawal, said P.M.News can call tomorrow morning, to speak with the Oba.

We need legislation to eradicate rituals, cannibalism - Erelu Lola Ayonrinde -Raises posers on Oba Funso Adeolu’s corpse

Erelu Tunwase AyonrindeErelu Tunwase of Ode-Remo, Chief Lola Ayonrinde, who is the Otun Iyalode of Shomolu and Lagos District, and also the Yeye Akinrogun of Ikeji-Ile Ijesa was twice Mayor of the London Borough of Wandsworth. She talks to AYO-LAWAL GBENOBA on her campaign against human sacrifice and cannibalism in Nigeria. Excerpts:

WHAT is your campaign all about?
The ‘Say No To Cannibalism In Nigeria’ campaign is aimed towards eradicating the ancient and obnoxious practice of mutilating the bodies of traditional rulers after death. The rituals and sacrifices parts of the body of a dead king, especially in Western Nigeria, are used for are barbaric and a disgrace to the country in this 21st century. The movement is out to stop these evil practices which are not in consonant with the will of God and against the fundamental human rights of the affected traditional rulers. When a king dies, they say they have to give his heart to his successor on the throne to eat. They explained that it will make the new king strong and courageous but, is that not deceit? How can eating somebody’s flesh give courage to another person? They mutilate the remains of these kings and engage in fetish and obnoxious activities which add no value to anybody or the society in general.

Why do you need to feed an incoming royal father with the heart of a dead one? This cannibalism started with Christopher Colombus who believed that when a king ate the heart, or some other parts of a dead ruler, some major attributes of the dead was transferred to the new king. This is sheer cannibalism and has no place with God. And, I want the chiefs, the traditional rulers themselves and other stakeholders to know that any tradition that does not recognise God is doomed. The government must put a stop to this cannibalism going on in some parts of Nigeria because, it is even against the constitution of Nigeria. Section 38 subsection 1 of the Nigerian constitution gives every citizen the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, while section 17 subsection 26 declares that the sanctity of the human person shall be recognised and human dignity shall be maintained and enhanced. Where is the sanctity of the human person in all these? Where is human dignity?

What motivated this campaign?
I was very close to the late Alaye of Ode-Remo, Oba Funso Adeolu, the popular Chief Eleyinmi of the rested Village Headmaster soap opera. Few months after his death on August 21, 2008, he started appearing to me and I had months of traumatic haunting. In his lifetime, Oba Adeolu was a Christian and he made it known that he did not partake in anything fetish during his installation as king. He explicitly, several times, demanded that when death came calling, his corpse should be handed over to his family so that he could be given a proper Christian burial. However, his corpse was not released to the family. After his death, he appeared to me several times, and kept telling me about many things. He said his corpse was handed over to the ‘odis’ (slaves) who treated it like that of a criminal. They took bits and pieces of his remains for their own use while some parts were distributed to the four corners of the town.

It was while going round that I discovered what happened and I met some chiefs who confessed what happened but asked me to forget it because there was nothing we could do about it.

All the ‘odus’ of Ifa do not approve using human beings as sacrifice, the constitution does not approve and to crown it all, God Almighty frowns at this practice, they are doing it to appease whom? Some of the kings today are enlightened and those who are born again Christians, like Oba Adeolu, are renouncing these things. So, why hold on to an obnoxious and barbaric act? Oba Adeolu believed he would be given a decent burial and that is why his ghost has refused to rest. Even in Ijebuland, these things were abolished years ago and Ijebuland under the Awujale agreed they would bury kings according to their religion.

So, how do you hope to stop the practice?
We are canvassing that our traditional rulers should be buried whole, without being mutilated and it should be in the open. There is secrecy because of the evils attached. It is untenable scientifically that the heart is eaten for so and so reasons. To start with, let us have the installation of kings in the open, no aspect of the installation should be shrouded in secrecy. It should be a celebration of our culture so, why should it be shrouded in secrecy? When everything becomes transparent, it will even help younger ones to know more about our culture and we will be able to restore some of our societal values. Why should obas be laid to rest in a paganic manner? If a governor gives staff of office to a king, giving him recognition and authority, that king is under the governor so, why should the government condone barbarism in this age? The ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs should do something about this, if not, the government is endorsing cannibalism. True that some of the kings went through these rituals during installation but those who opted out should be given that grace of opting out of the rituals in death. They should be buried according to their faith. The practice is a disgrace to the whole of South West because it is common there.

We are appealing to the traditional rulers who were installed through cannibalism to renounce it publicly and declare they don’t want their hearts to be eaten or other parts of their bodies to be used for any form of ritual. Abolition of slave trade took place years ago. So, why do we still have some people in Ode calling themselves slaves (‘odis’)? We need legislation to stop the barbaric act and we are appealing to our lawmakers to rise up to this task of eradicating cannibalism in Nigeria. There should be a law backing a king to opt out of fetish installation and burial and it should become an offence for anyone to tamper with the remains of a king, for whatever purpose, or to give the body to the ‘odi’ for rituals. The penalty should be without an option of fine so that the perpetrators would know how grave the offence is. The ‘odi’ in Ode can be given money to buy goat, ram, cow, or whatever they need for sacrifice, if they must, but there must be total abolition of human sacrifice in the country. Efforts are being made by some Ogun State traditional rulers to stop it but some feel the fetish practice must be protected. The government must detach itself from it.

Internationally, human sacrifice, cannibalism, witchcraft and sorcery are illegal so, why should it be done with impunity in Nigeria, a country that is known as the giant of Africa? Infact, politicians should begin to include the abolition of cannibalism in their campaign programmes, and party manifestos by 2010.

What efforts have you made so far to network and get people involved?
We give glory to Almighty God. I have spoken to so many kings who secretly don’t want it and we are telling them that they should make an open declaration against these evil practices. The campaign would be boosted if they do because people believe they all knew and agreed to these evil practices before being installed. We now call on the royal fathers again, in the name of Almighty God, to declare publicly that they don’t want these fetish practices to continue. I have carried the campaign to the international level so that Nigerians of affluence who are in diaspora would lobby the lawmakers and get a legal backing for the campaign to eradicate human sacrifice and cannibalism in Nigeria. A number of international media like the BBC have aired my interview on the campaign and some Nigerian people abroad are involved in the lobbying for a legislation to stop the obnoxious practices.

We call on the ‘oluwos’ and ‘odis’ in Ode to review the entrenched ill that has no value to the society. We appeal to them to accept cows and goats and allow our royal fathers to be buried according to their beliefs. Then, it was about time that the royal fathers are constituted into the House of Royals, like the House of Lords, so that they would have more power, say and patnership in governance. This would help them to contribute meaningfully to issues affecting them and the society at large.

Inside human parts market in Lagos.

More Stories on This Section
Jankara market is self- effacing and deceptively ordinary. Located close to Idumagbo area of Lagos Island, the market is just a stretch of an old street.

Ears on the ground
Like other streets and markets, canvassers and touts hang around the place pitching for customers and mugus (gullible people). Though low in reputation, touts are an essential segment of this time – honoured market. Over the years, the place has come to be known as a place where any thing goes. And so, the touts come handy here.
They have their ears on the ground, and therefore know all the goings-on.

Book and wait
A week ago, our reporter posed as a juju priest who was in dire need of human body parts for urgent rituals. After about four hours of waiting and being passed from one “contact” to another, and played around like ping-pong, the reporter got a dealer who “booked” him. The rule here is, if you want a fresh human body part, you book and wait. If your order is for dry parts you get instant delivery.
But you must be an expert in human anatomy to decipher the parts you want from man’s closest animal relations – gorilla, chimpanzee and monkey.

Dark secret
But don’t jump to a hasty conclusion, there are genuine traders and honest businessmen and women at Jankara. They perhaps don’t even know that the place also habour a dark secret. A police post even looks over the place. A signpost calls it Oko Awo Police Post. An office on the counter there stared at our reporter angrily when he asked him if the police know about the wheeling and dealing in human body parts in the area: “What kind of question be this? I beg go, no be for here—o” the police officer retorted angrily.

Menumo
This expression when translated literally means “seal your lips” in Yoruba. The term is said in whisper and hushed tone — menu…mo .When you say the first syllable, you pause, look around to be sure there’s no third party or curiosity cat eaves dropping. When a deal is struck, you will be taken to some dank shanties and courtyard for your consignment.

The business is all about raw cash. A fresh human head has a street value of N250, 000. Fresh internal organs like heart, lung, kidney, and so on go for 500,000 a piece.
Other vital parts like manliness, womanliness and bosom costs N50,000 each.Fresh tongue is sold at N100,000.
Sunday Sun learnt when a tongue is “ritualized and jujufied” that it “works well” for traders and people who apply for visa to go abroad “when well prepared, no one go question you for embassy and even your working place”, a dealer whose alias is Baba Ibeji revealed.
Toe and finger, Sunday Sun further learnt are good for travelers and business people. “ The toe is for traveling without falling.
The finger is to make money. Any thing you touch turns to money”, Baba Ibeji said.
Fresh toe and finger goes for N50,000 each.

Ritual animals
Even animals considered endangered species are not spared in Jankara. Herbalist beside the area’s butcher shop openly sell a wide range of animals. Imprisoned in wire-mesh cages are live animals like eagles, tortoise, chamellion, alligator and so on. A live eagle goes for N10,000.
Dead and dry one costsN500,000. Live Tortois costN5,000 while ordinary empty one is sold for N2,500.
Live chamelion costs N2,500. Dead and dry one goes for N2,000. The lizard-like creature, Sunday Sun learnt, is in demand by Advance Fee Fraudster —419. “When the thing is worked”, it means the more you look, the less you see, you will never caught,” one of the dealers who declined to give his name said.

Tough-skinned
The dealers know their terrain and the world they inhabit. They smell and sense danger in the air all the time. They are inclined to do business with you if you mention and have a prove of a regular Juju priest and customer. Even at this, they will still carry out a check on you. There’s no physical search. Under the pretex of “bringing your thing”, they will call your guarrantor and run a check on you. Any discovery of falsehood, they will cancel the deal and melt out of sight, leaving you to wait forever

Where missing people go
Jankara might be the possible place where missing persons in Lagos resurface but reduced to faceless, liveless body parts. As though to corroborate this, the managing director of Lagos State waste Management Authority (LAWMAN), Mr Ola Oresanya told Sunday Sun in an interview that hardly a day passes in the city without street sweepers and refuse collectors picking dismembered corpses and body parts.

“The corpses and body parts may be the handwork of ritualist and hit-and-run drivers”, he said.
Meanwhile Sunday Sun learnt that the morgues in the city are brimming with unclaimed dcorpses. There’s no more land for mass burial. So cremnation is the only option,” the source said.

Talking about Yoruba cannibals

Lagos - A Nigerian man has been arrested after he killed a woman and ate her stewed intestines in a bid to cure an abnormally persistent Attention, police said on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Osun state police said 50-year-old Folorunso Olukotun had led officers to his victim's disembowelled body in the bush near his home village in south-west Nigeria.

"According to the man's story, his private organ always has an Attention and it doesn't go down," Oluwole Ayodeji said. "Someone advised him to kill a woman and eat her intestines."

Olukotun ambushed his victim, a woman in her forties unknown to her attacker, on a path near her village. He attacked her with a machete, killed her, and took her intestines home, Ayodeji said.

'He seems to have believed them'
"He cooked them like a sort of stew and ate them with pounded yam," he said. "When the police arrived he was very open, we have his whole confession on tape and he has been remanded in custody."

The spokesperson said that police believe that someone had jokingly suggested cannibalism as a cure for Olukotun's problem, in the belief that he would never carry out such a killing.

"He seems to have believed them," he said. Police could not say whether the Attention has now subsided. - Sapa-AFP

The Federal Government has sacked the Bi-Courtney Consortium from its Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement to reconstruct the Lagios-Ibadan Expressway, citing breaching of the terms of the concession agreement signed by both parties on May 26, 2009.

Bi-Courtney, ownded by billionaire businessman, Wale Babalakin, had been the butt of complaints by the government and the public due to the slow space of works on the road which had often caused long stretches of traffic between Lagos and Ibadan.

It would be recalled that President Jonathan had recently handed down an Executive Order to the Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, to ensure that the nation's roads are in top form for the Christmas holidays.

The government, while announcing the revocation of the contract with Bi-Courtney, said both Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and RCC Nigeria Limited had been hired to do the job.

The minister said, “Due to the senseless carnage on this important expressway, which is part of Arterial Route A1, the Federal Government has also decided to embark on the Emergency Reconstruction of the expressway.

“Consequently, the Federal Ministry of Works has engaged the services of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and RCC Nigeria Limited to commence work immediately on the reconstruction of the expressway.

“While Julius Berger would handle Section 1: from Lagos to Shagamu interchange, RCC Nigeria Limited will be responsible for Section II: from Shagamu to Ibadan.

“The Federal Government wishes to assure (Nigerians) that while it will continue to uphold the sanctity of contracts entered into by the Federal Government, it will not shy away from implementing provisions of the contract agreement dealing with non-performance on the part of the contracting party.

“The legal implications of this termination have been carefully considered by both the Federal Ministry of Works and indeed the Federal Government. If you recall we have been on this issue for quite some time now and we have meticulously followed the concession agreement, the provision of relevant clauses of the agreement.

“We have complied fully with the provisions of this agreement. We have had cause even in the past to write the concessionaire to detail the breaches which it had committed in this agreement in this particular transaction and we have also followed the minimum and maximum number of days the contractor was expected to remedy the situation but failing which the Federal Government had no alternative but to take this course of action,”

Ogun teacher wins US visa lottery, replaces herself with her daughter

by ADEOLA BALOGUN

An ongoing verification exercise in the Ogun State Teaching Service has opened a can of worms, writes ADEOLA BALOGUN

There are strong indications that the fate of about 800 Ogun State teachers is hanging in the balance, going by the current audit in the state.

A total of 19,146 teachers' records are being vetted in the screening and accreditation exercise, which began last September.

Some teachers may however be lucky to return home having lost their means of livelihood if found wanting, but others may not be so lucky, because they may end up in jail for various acts of forgery and cheating.

Documents obtained by Saturday PUNCH from the exercise showed among others, a bizarre case involving a former teacher, who won the US lottery and relocated to the United States.

But, rather than informing her employers about the development, she instituted a regime of cheating in her family. She recruited one of her daughters to replace her, regardless of her educational status.

Unfortunately for her, her daughter was caught when the verification exercise commenced: she could neither present any certificate nor mention any higher institution that she had attended.

Instead, the young lady wept profusely and pleaded for leniency. She confessed, explaining that it was a plot to sustain the family while her mother was away.

Saturday PUNCH found that this scenario is a reflection of many other cases of teachers, who have been drawing undeserved salaries for years and compounding the problem of their pupils.

In another case, 620 teachers claimed that they had graduated from the same institution (name withheld), but it turned out that only 484 were certified to have studied there. The remaining 136 had only tried to deceive the audit team by presenting forged documents.

In a rare show of desperation to retain her job, one of the teachers reportedly confessed to have paid N30,000 to procure her forged certificate.

To start with, the teachers were asked to present their credentials and other academic records for biometric documentation. About 223 of them boycotted the directive for fear of being exposed, while some absconded midway. Originally, the exercise was meant to last for just two weeks, according to the state Universal Basic Education Board officials.

But with the unearthing of disturbing revelations, the state government decided to employ the services of a consulting company, Corporate Institutions Training Consult, to confirm the various higher institutions attended by its teachers.

Overall, about 62 universities and colleges were contacted to confirm the validity of attestation letters and statements of results presented by the teachers.

According to a SUBEB official, some of the teachers, who claimed to have graduated as far back as 1978 presented statements of results and attestation documents in lieu of certificates.

"It was a harvest of absurdities of no mean measure," says Yusuph Olaniyonu, the state commissioner for information.

The consultants were said to have compiled the papers of the 19,146 teachers in the state's employment and forwarded same to the various schools that they claimed to have attended and graduated from.

In some of the documents obtained by Saturday PUNCH, out of the 35 names and documents sent to the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Oto-Ijanikin, Lagos, for verification, the school wrote back that it could only confirm 25 to be authentic. It said others could not be traced and labelled them as fake.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the authorities of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, were said so alarmed and invited the police when they discovered the number of forged results and certificates of the school presented by some of Ogun State teachers.

Giving a background to the exercise, which exposed a harvest of fraudulent practices in the state, Olaniyonu, a former editor, ThisDay on Sunday, told Saturday PUNCH that the exercise affected every worker in the state, government, including Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

"We started with a biometric data of every worker of Ogun State. We started first with the civil servants. The governor underwent the exercise despite being the number one worker in the state.

"The actual purpose of the exercise is for the state government to scientifically and physically determine how many people make up its workforce; their biometric data and to capture other details. After the biometric data of the civil service, it was decided that it would be reasonable to have the teaching personnel in the state detailed and verified to determine their suitability.

"But along the line, the state government decided to examine the suitability of its teaching employees, particularly with a view to taking education to the old era when Ogun State used to be number one in the country.

The commissioner said that the quest to upgrade the teaching personnel and its efforts to revive the educational standard in the state led to the current exercise, which eventually threw up the fraud being perpetrated by some of them.

"After the final results of the exercise from our consultants, we may have to hand over the file to the police to handle the criminal cases. Those involved cannot run because we have them captured; we have their addresses, their bank accounts and other documents.

"They may have to face the consequence of their fraud. When a teacher is fraudulent, you can imagine what such would impact on his pupil," one of the top state officials told Saturday PUNCH.

But Olaniyonu said the state government would consider the next line of action after consulting all the stakeholders.

A 62-year-old retired lecturer, Pa Ayoola Oyesiji, has been arrested by policemen from Agugu Division of the Oyo State Police Command for drowning his two-year-old stepdaughter in a bucket of water, thereby killing her.

The incident, which occurred at Atipe area of Ibadan in the evening of Friday, 16 Novemeber, was reported to have been the aftermath of a quarrel between the man and his 22-year-old wife, Barakat Akeem, over sex.

The young woman, who is currently nursing a two-month-old baby for the retired lecturer, was said to have given birth to the deceased child before she married him in December 2011.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the woman lived in the man's family house at Atipe area, and that the man used to come there to visit and to carry out his conjugal duties.

However, things were said to have gone awry, when the man, who came to his wife on Friday, approached her for sex, and the woman refused, claiming that her baby was still young, in addition to the fact that she was in her menstruation.

Pa Oyesiji, who was said to have retired from the University of Ilorin in June, reportedly got infuriated and tried to pull his wife back into the room, but the woman fled, dropping her wrapper in the process.

Her two-year-old daughter, Aishat Mohammed, was said to be sleeping in the room then with her two-month-old baby being tended by a neighbour.

The woman reportedly raised the alarm which made neighbours to rush out of their rooms.

She pleaded with them to help her bring her daughter, Aishat, out of the room where her husband had remained.

However, their attempts to do so proved abortive as Pa Oyesiji refused to open the door, a development that resulted in the neighbours forcing it open.

After a quick scan through the room, the little girl could not be located.

This development got the mother and the neighbours agitated over what could have befallen her.

However, they were shocked when they later discovered the body of Aishat in a half-filled bucket of water in the unlit room.

As the news spread in the neighbourhood, an irate mob was said to have descended on the retired lecturer with different objects, beating him almost to the point of death, until he was rescued by a team of policemen from Agugu Division.

Sunday Tribune gathered that Pa Oyesiji is an habitual drunkard and was already drunk when he approached his wife for sex, another reason which reportedly made the young woman to have rebuffed his advances on the fateful day.

Though he admitted that he was drunk, Pa Oyesiji told Sunday Tribune that he only wanted to prevent the girl from running about, by putting her in a bucket, adding that he did not know that the bucket contained water.

When reminded that the baby was already asleep when he reportedly picked her from where she was, the man could not put up any further defence.

It was learnt that the police were yet to inform the man about the girl's death, so that he would not harm himself.

He was also taken to a private hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained in his eye during the mob action.

Oyesiji, a holder of MBBS degree, also lectured at the University of Ibadan before transferring his services to the University of Ilorin in 1996.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of administration, Mr. Clement Adoda, confirmed the story, saying that the remains of the girl had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

He added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku for further investigations.

Mrs, Abosede Ademola pleaded with a Lagos Grade 'A' Customary Court, sitting in Agege to dissolve her nine-year-old marriage on the grounds of being stripped naked by her husband, Azeez, who also tied her like a ram. The 35-year-old woman, who resides at 7, Community Street, Adiyan, Lagos, pleaded that the court grants her custody of the children.

She alleged that her husband frequently flogged her mercilessly at the slight excuse and did not respect her family. "My husband drinks to stupor, moves with bad company, leaves home in the morning and comes back late in the night. As if that was not enough, whenever he wanted to beat me, he would strip me naked and tie my hands like the Sallah ram to be slaughtered," she said.

She also accused Azeez of infidelity, saying she wanted the custody of her children so that her suffering in his house would not be in vain. Azeez, a car dealer, however denied the allegations. According to him, Abosede failed to submit herself to him and would not take care of the children.

He alleged that his wife always went out whenever she liked and returned when she pleased, adding that his wife left the house in the morning on Sallah day without cooking, and he was the one that cooked for the children. "My father died and my wife did not show any concern nor went to my family on condolence visit. "She would not give me food or take care of the children. If I continue with her, I might kill her; so I want the court to dissolve the marriage,"he said. The court president, Mr Emmanuel Shokunle, adjourned the case till November 19, for further hearing.

5 Igbo traders abducted in Owo

Sunday Kudaisi, Akure

Kidnapping which is fast becoming a way of life in the riverine oil producing areas of Ondo State, at the weekend, spread to the ancient city of Owo, as suspected armed youths abducted five Igbo traders.

The victims who were alleged to have been kidnapped on September 6 were released at the weekend after an undisclosed huge ransom was allegedly paid by the Owo Igbo community.

Those kidnapped included Messrs Okechukwu Okafor, Mike, Chigozie Nwanekezi and Monday Agboh.

Chairman of the Igbo community in Owo Mr Eze Chidozie, said several Igbos operating in the town had closed down business, adding that they will not open for business until government security agents assure them that their lives are safe.

The kidnappers allegedly consented to release of the abducted people after the intervention of Olowo of Owo, Oba Olateru Olagbegi, the Ojomoluda of Ijebu Owo, Oba……Ojomo and some notable Owo chieftains.

The Igbo community in Owo, who however protested to the State police commissioner, Charles Dawodu, after the release of their kinsmen, narrated how the militant youths alleged to be palace boys, Eyin Ogbe boys and Iloro youths made life unbearable for the Igbo people living in Owo kingdom.

Chidozie told journalists in Akure that the militant youths had in the last one year, kidnapped 16 Igbo people and demanded huge sums of money which they paid.

He said: "They just enter our stores carry our goods and ask us to pay certain amount of money before they will release the items and any attempt to argue with them, they will just bundled that person and take him to their cell.

"Thereafter, they will be demanding for money ranging from N100, 000 and above and they will not release the victim until their demand is met."

The Igbo community also alleged that the ugly development had lead to the death of two traders, saying the militants have turned it to be their rights to be entering shops operated by the Igbo traders and threatening to kill or maim them if they (the Igbo traders) don’t meet their demands.

The target of the militants is especially those that are into timber business, electronics, medicines and motor spare parts.

The intimidation and harassment he said have been reported to the Olowo and Ojomoluda but that the looting spree of Igbo shops with impunity have not been stopped.

The chairman appealed to the state police commissioner to rescue the Igbo from the hands of the militants who had turned kidnapping and looting of Igbo store to source of their daily income.

Chiedozie noted that such actions will strain the cordial relationship between the Owo people and the Igbo traders in the town. Adding that all Igbo people in Ondo State would today (Monday) storm Owo and join their kinsmen on a peace protest against the activities of the militants.

Confirming the incident, the state Mr. Dawodu said the victims of the alleged kidnapped never reported the cases to the police.

Daudu said the victims had been keeping the information to themselves, noting that now that it’s getting out of their hands that they took the appropriate step of reporting to the police.

The police boss assured the people that the criminal incident would not recur, saying he had contacted the monarch of the ancient city and other prominent traditional chiefs to stamp out the heinous activities of the illegal militant youths.
