The Peoples Democratic Party Councillors Forum has threatened to mention leaders of the All Progressives Congress who are allegedly sponsoring the Boko Haram sect in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. The Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Collins Onogu, told journalists that by their recent activities and pronouncements, the APC leaders are poised to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan. He said the Boko Haram activities in the North East became so high because most of the rural dwellers in the area are PDP members. Onogu said, “Most of those who have been rendered homeless in the North Eastern part of the country by Boko Haram are PDP members. What is their offence? The spokesperson of APC, Lai Mohammed has neglected his duty and he is now making statements on behalf of Boko Haram. The APC is calling for the probe Alli Modu Sheriff and Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika who may not even know anything about Boko Haram. Is that supposed to be his job?” This plan to make the North East ungovernable for the President, it said, will not work as the group made up of grassroots persons will “soon start mentioning names of those behind Boko Haram activities in Nigeria.” Onogu said, “Boko Haram cannot reveal their real sponsors to Nigerians, they will continue to lie. APC leaders are happy because the Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, did not mention the names of their members as Boko Haram sponsors, we at the grassroots will soon mention their names, the truth will soon be revealed. “APC has been using the media to blackmail President Goodluck Jonathan, their plan is to make the country ungovernable for him, they have plans of diverting the attention of Nigerians but it will not work out.” The Chairman said the PDP Councillors Forum is fully behind the President in his fight against insurgency and for peace to return to the country. “Boko Haram activities will soon be a thing of the past, it will not be forever, God is fighting for President Jonathan, He will fight for the PDP and the party will surely triumph in the forthcoming elections,” Onogu said. Fifa has not recognised Chris Giwa's claim to be NFF president Fifa has confirmed that African champions Nigeria have avoided a ban from global football. The threat of suspension was lifted after Aminu Maigari was allowed to continue as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). His position has been questioned by Chris Giwa, whose election last month Fifa refused to recognise. "Conditions in our correspondence of 3 September have been complied with and the NFF is not suspended," said Fifa. However, Fifa warned that further complications in holding elections will lead to a ban. Did you know? Nigeria's shock 3-2 loss to Congo in Calabar on Saturday in 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying was their first competitive loss at home for 33 years. They lost the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations final to Cameroon in Lagos but that was on penalties. Maigari's main task now is to plan for elections to be held as soon as possible for the NFF presidency and board members. "We inform you that should the electoral process be affected by any interference or mishap, the case will be referred again - and without prior notice or warning - to the appropriate Fifa bodies for immediate suspension of the NFF until the next Fifa Congress," the letter stated. Fifa's next congress is in May 2015. Giwa had claimed to have been elected NFF president on 26 August but Fifa did not recognise him and gave him a deadline of Monday morning for him to step aside. He failed to appear at the NFF offices on Monday and a case has been taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on behalf of Giwa's committee. A Fifa suspension could have led to Nigeria missing Wednesday's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in South Africa. The Confederation of African Football said last week that the Super Eagles would be kicked out of the 2015 qualifying campaign if they failed to play the fixture. The first person back into the NFF headquarters in Abuja to resume his duties was general secretary Musa Amadu resumed work at the federation's offices in Abuja on Monday. "It has been a difficult time for our football but everything is over now," Musa Amadu told BBC Sport on Monday. "Our attention should shift towards moving our football forward because the country's football has gone through a tough period. "The next step is to have an extra-ordinary assembly that will set a date for elections for the new executive committee. "It is important to emphasise that this will not happen beyond 25 September, as directed by Fifa." Nigeria were banned from global football for nine days in July for government interference in the running of the football federation when Maigari was forced out of his post by a court ruling. After his reinstatement, he was voted out of office by the NFF's executive committee a few days later. However, Fifa did not accept this and Maigari was once again back as president in August. |

Kaduna, Sept. 9, 2014 (NAN) Kaduna State Government on Tuesday said it had released N116 million for the purchase of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) detecting equipment in public schools. The Commissioner for Education in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Ali, said this at the flag-off of training for 13,000 teachers on prevention of EVD ahead of the Sept. 22, resumption date for primary and post primary schools. Ali, who stressed the need for preventive measures against the spread of the disease, urged participants to ensure strict compliance amongst staff and students on good hygiene. He said N41 million was earmarked for the training, refreshment and transportation of the teachers, while N75 million was for the purchase of thermometers. “We are training about 13,000 teachers across the three senatorial zones. Forty one million Naira has been earmarked for the training, refreshment, and transportation of teachers, while N75 million is for the purchase of equipment from the Federal Ministry of Health. “And we are purchasing 10,000 to give two to each school, and in the event where a school has more than 1,000 students, it is at a liberty to have more. The commissioner said the state government would provide more fund to the education sector, disclosing that the state emerged third nationwide in the 2014 WAEC results. “We expect to double the money we spend on teachers’ professional development. The magic is for one to train and retrain teachers every year so that they can be up- to-date. “No matter how you put the structures in the schools, if you don’t have the teaching materials, text books and embark on regular training for teachers, you are not going to record any success. “So, we are giving priority to the training of teachers so that they can impact more on students’ performance.’’ |
