Politics / We Didn’t Join APC For Leadership Positions –governor Murtala Nyako by DonColz1(m): 1:34am On Jan 07, 2014
The Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has said he and his four other colleagues, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to join the All Progressives Congress, did not do so to upstage the leadership of the APC.
The governor said contrary to insinuations in some quarters, he and his colleagues in the G5 were motivated by higher patriotic motives.
Nyako said this in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahmad Sajoh, on Monday.
He said, the governors were motivated by among other things, a need to provide Nigerians with a viable opposition platform to check the current drift in the polity.
Nyako listed the drift to include the replacement of all democratic cultures and tenets with a culture of impunity and political brigandage.
Nyako explained that the five governors were also motivated by the need to join other patriots to form a Pan-Nigerian National Platform that will serve as a veritable vehicle for the enthronement of genuine unity, peace and progress in the nation.
The statement read in part, “The governor recalls that at the time they pulled out of the PDP, several options were open to them.
“They could have formed a new political party; they could have joined a newly registered party or any of the other existing political parties in Nigeria.
“But they opted to join the APC because it represents a broad-based coalition of democratic forces built on the ideals of progress and development.
“These ideals are very important and should be respected by all members of the party nationwide.
“It is, therefore, imperative that all members of the APC hold on these ideals at all times. Under such circumstances, there should be no reason to disagree on anything; least of all leadership of the party at any level.”
Nyako expressed the belief that it was only by the coming together of progressive forces that Nigeria would be saved from the vice grip of a cabal that had held the presidency captive and had continued to provide excuses for countless failures.
He accused the unmanned cabal for unwittingly reducing all arguments about the future of Nigeria to non issues, such as ethnicity and religious bigotry.
Nyako also observed that under such circumstances, the progress of the nation had stagnated, leadership focus had become clannish and mediocrity had taken over serious business of government.
These, he added, the real challenges before all patriots and these were the motives behind the move by the G5 Governors and all other patriotic forces within the National Assembly and other sections of the polity.
While reacting to a statement issued by the PDP on Sunday, Nyako accused the PDP leadership as clannish ethnic chauvinist and religious bigots, hence they described others in the same manner.

Politics / Re: President Jonathan’s 11th Private Jet! - Waste Of Money or Not? by DonColz1(m): 1:31am On Jan 07, 2014
It is lamentable that at a time when we still haven’t seen the infrastructural dividends promised with funds freed up from the partial fuel subsidy removed, the President is more concerned with splashing billions on banqueting hall, renovation of residential apartments and covert medical tourism trips abroad.
This waste in the face of limited resources extends to the federal bureaucracy that has brought about an increase in the number of ministries from 21 to about 40 with the number of ministers jumping in equal quantum or even more.

Politics / President Jonathan’s 11th Private Jet! - Waste Of Money or Not? by DonColz1(m): 12:36am On Jan 07, 2014
The Presidency has made a proposal for an upfront deposit of N1.5billion for a brand new private jet, which will become the Presidential Air Fleet’s (PAF) 11th aircraft. This figure is contained in the details of the 2014 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan through the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The Federal Government has budgeted another N1.52b for the maintenance of the 10 aircraft currently in the PAF in 2014 and it is now set to spend just about that amount on a new one. This prodigious squandering of taxpayers’ money is reckless and unacceptable.

The PAF already boasts two Falcon 7X jets, two Falcon 900 jets, Gulfstream 550, one Boeing 737 BBJ (Nigerian Air Force 001 or Eagle One), and Gulfstream IVSP. Others are one Gulfstream V, Cessna Citation 2 aircraft and Hawker Siddley 125-800 jet. The combined estimated value of the PAF is about $390.5m (N60.53bn). According to industry experts, it costs a minimum of 20 per cent of that figure to maintain them annually. So we’re looking at about $58.57m (N9.08bn) yearly for maintenance. Private jets are money guzzlers either in the air or on land.

The proclivity of this administration for frivolous spending is well documented. The government has been severely criticised in the past for the colossal amount of embezzlement, rip-off and wastage that have been its hallmark. The rationale behind this new aircraft in the PAF must be condemned .

Apparently to hush the cacophony of voices that will rise in opposition to the proposed new jet, the Presidency in its usual deceitful manner, has made part payment for what can best be described as a completely unnecessary toy of comfort. The Nigerian PAF is already bloated. If he can’t travel in any of the 10 jets in PAF’s possession, then there’s absolutely no need for an eleventh one.

At a time we would think the numerous editorials and op-eds have succeeded in curbing waste and frivolities which this government now symbolises, then came this new proposal. We must continue to resist their recalcitrance. This lavish lifestyle must be checked.

The waste in government is also demonstrated in the large entourage that accompanies Mr. President on his foreign trips. One can only imagine the millions spent on hotel bills and estacodes that accrue to the government officials. According to reports, world leaders are stunned at the strangely large number of such entourage. The recent trip of President Jonathan in the first week of January this year to Kenya and the hullabaloo about his entourage are apt.

It is shocking that the same people who have budgeted millions for this new flying toy are aware that the country has no national carrier as I write. It is shameful that the PAF has about the third largest fleet of aircraft in the country with a total of 10 aircraft, coming closely behind Aero Contractors with 12 and Arik Air, the largest commercial airline in Nigeria with a fleet of 23 aircraft. Nigeria happens to be one of the few countries in the world with such a large PAF. It is ridiculous that this is happening in an aviation sector that is dominated by foreign airlines.

Nigerian carriers are going under due to cash constraints. Countries with visionary and focused leadership like Malaysia, Ghana, South Africa and a host of others across Europe maintain only one aircraft in their PAF.

As the much publicised take-off of the proposed national carrier before the end of the year failed, it won’t be out of place to make a case for the government to seriously consider converting the PAF to a national carrier, retaining one or two for use by Mr. President and his co-travellers. The private jets can form the hub of the charter aircraft.

What better example than the one given by a national leader like British Prime Minister, David Cameron, in 2010 when he slummed it in business class of a commercial airline flying from London to Washington. He was caught on camera swanning around the world in hired jets. He flies around the world on British Airways! Had it been in Nigeria, security risks, flight delays are few of the sundry reasons government officials would have given for not flying commercial airlines. The U.S. President, Barack Obama, reportedly pays for his food, ours spends almost a billion naira to entertain himself and members of his government yearly.

It amazes many Nigerians who watch in utter disbelief the profligate nature of government.
This government has embarked on some white elephants like mere renovation of official residences with billions of naira. We can recall the uproar that greeted the N2.2billion allocated to the construction of a plush banqueting hall, last year, with the lame excuse that what the country had was way smaller than what other tiny African countries have.

Politics / Mentally ill Woman Delivers Baby At Rubbish Dump In Lagos State (Pics) by DonColz1(m): 1:19am On Jan 06, 2014
For four years, she was known to wander the street of Badejo Kalesanwo, Oduduwa Community, in Mushin Local Government Area Lagos State.
She slept on the road, ate from bins and went about in tatters.
Some months ago, people saw her with a protruding belly and dismissed it as fibroid growth.
However, on the morning of December 25, 2013 the unknown mad woman, who identified herself toPUNCH Metroas Amudatulai, a native of Ibadan in Oyo State, went into labour and self-delivered a baby girl as residents watched in awe.
Eyewitnesses said she immediately named the baby girl Mariam Olorundamilare Odunayo (Olorundamilare, means God has given me the victory, while Odunayo means, the year of Joy).
A resident, who identified herself simply as Mama Adoyo, said Amudatulai delivered the baby by the dump site situated along the newly-tarred road.
She said, “I have known her for a long time. She used to sit and sleep on that road. When we saw her protruding stomach, we didn’t know she was pregnant. We thought it was fibroid. But around 6am on Wednesday, she was crying and screaming my name and other people’s names in the area because we play with her a lot.
“I later moved close to her and when I saw it was labour pains, I asked her to let us go to the hospital, but she said no, insisting that she could see people bathing her baby, whereas she had not delivered by that time.
“I kept my eyes on her as she was screaming. Suddenly, the baby came out. We didn’t know on time, but a driver who was passing by called our attention that we should move closer to her because she had given birth.
“We had to quickly call a nurse who came to cut the placenta. The nurse later injected her and cleaned her up.”
Mama Adoyo said one of the community leaders donated money to assist in buying some materials, as other people in the neighbourhood trooped out with old and new clothes for the mother and child.
A female worker with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Mrs. Modupe Salami, who cleans the street, told our correspondent that although Amudatulai still raved after the delivery of the baby, she was generally well behaved and could be rescued with a good medical help.
PUNCH Metro learnt that a man who claimed to be a brother of the new mother had been calling some of the residents on the telephone to keep an eye on Amudatulai, adding that he would come to take her back to Ibadan.
The said brother was also said to have claimed that Amudatulai had three other children in Ibadan.
A community leader, Alhaji Babatunde Shittu, appealed for the intervention of relevant government agencies before an imposter took advantage of the situation.
Shittu said, “I must say that we all are concerned as to how she came about the pregnancy. We don’t even know where she came from since she came here four years ago. Government should take care of both the mother and the child. There is no way you can compare someone who is sane with someone who is not. Again, she is homeless and needs good accommodation. People are only guessing that her family members are coming. If this lady has good medical care, she will be normal.”
Our correspondent observed on Friday that she was being sheltered along with her baby in a shop on the street.
The dimly-lit wooden structure had a mattress and a mosquito net for the new baby.
Our correspondent also observed as excited residents gathered round the shelter to catch a glimpse of the baby and give her money.
Our correspondent asked Amudatulai how she felt about her new baby, and the attention she was getting.
She said, “I am so happy today. I know my portion is joy in this Lagos. And my joy will not end…” At this point, she began to rave and abuse a woman beside her, asking for papers to show ownership of an unidentified portion of land.

Politics / Ekiti Governorship Election Holds In June 2014 – INEC by DonColz1(m): 12:32am On Jan 06, 2014
The Independent National Electoral Commission will conduct the Ekiti State governorship election in June this year, while that of Osun State will be held a few months after,The PUNCHhas learnt.
The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, who disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, said that the timetable for the elections would be decided within the timeframe prescribed by law.
He said, “The schedule for the elections will be announced when the commission formally decides on the timelines – certainly, within the time frame prescribed by the law relative to the expiration of respective tenure.
“The elections won’t be held at the same time, since the tenures are not expiring at the same time. The general projection is that Ekiti will be held by mid-year 2014, and Osun shortly thereafter.”
The former Peoples Democratic Party governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni, was on February 19, 2009, sacked by the Court of Appeal in Ilorin over non-compliance with Electoral Acts 2006 in some wards in 10 Local Governments Area of the state in the April 14, 2007 governorship election.
The incumbent governor of the state who contested the election under the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, filed an appeal challenging the election of Oni at the Election Petition Tribunal where he was declared the winner of the election.
His counterpart in Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, became a governor on November 26, 2010, after he was declared the winner of the April 14, 2007 governorship election by the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan.
By the provision of section 178 (2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, an election to the office of governor of a state shall be held on a date not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the term of office of the last holder of the office.

Celebrities / I’m Proud Of My Unclad Pictures – Maheeda (An Interview) by DonColz1(m): 1:22am On Jan 05, 2014
Background

My name is Caroline Sam but my stage name is Maheeda. I am an orphan. I really did not know my mother and I never met my father. My mother died and I was all alone. When I was 14, I decided to hit the streets and I started fending for myself. I did a lot of funny jobs. Worked as a bar attendant, waitress and was a prostitute just to survive. Along the line I got pregnant. I am just a very strong woman who is trying to make a difference. Maybe I started off not too good, I have realised that whatever happens in your past, you have to use it in a positive way that will benefit you and your family.

Me and music

I have always loved music and attention. I started about ten years ago. I don’t have any albums yet but I have quite a number of singles. All I can say is that the way I want to do my thing is not acceptable in Nigeria. It has been hard and it’s still hard for me to achieve. Currently, I am in Nigeria to spend Christmas and I am also seizing the opportunity to shoot a video for my single, ‘Naija bad girl’. Apart from music, I am also a model and acting is another passion of mine.

Nude pictures

It is deliberate. I know what I am doing. The pictures are not targeted at anything. It is all about attention and there is no mistake about it. This business of music is called showbusiness and I am convinced I am on the right track. I owe no apologies. I just realised this way will be a faster hit than any other way. The pictures are working for me.

Criticisms

In this life, everybody gets criticised whether you do good or bad. I have read and heard so much about me that I am now used to it. Thanks to them, they have helped me develop a thick skin.

Relationship

I am married and my husband is Dutch. What I am doing is not alien to him or his family and he understands. I met him at a bar when he just came to Nigeria. We are happily married. Even before we got married, he understood my kind of person. He was aware of my vision. He has always been supportive. He just laughs whenever he comes across any of my pictures. It’s in Africa that we attach much importance to such things and consider it sacrilegious.
My daughter can’t do this
I am 31 and I had my daughter when I was 17. I do not think this is going to affect her in any way. If my mother did something like this; there is no way it would have affected me. My daughter is not even aware these nude pictures exist even though she has seen pictures of me in bikini. She is not even allowed access to the social media. Even if she gets to view them eventually, it’s not going to mean anything to her because she has the European mentality. When my daughter is 18, then she can decide what she wants. Currently, she is under my care and I won’t let her do what I am doing.

Nude pictures and music

So far, it has worked and it’s still working. As you can see, there’s so much attention on me. All of a sudden, people want to listen to my old singles and are looking forward to my debut album.

Friendship

I have quite a few of them. Don Jazzy is my friend, Olamide and Phyno just to mention but a few. Gospel artistes? No, but I became a born-again Christian and decided that I wanted to continue with secular music. Whether people accept it or not, I am a born-again Christian and that is why I describe my music as honest music. I am not perfect but I’m just living my life in the best possible way.

Style

I like to feel comfortable. When I dress, I want to be me not caring what the next person thinks. I also like to go to the gym to keep fit. When you are fit, clothes look fabulous on you.

Politics / Re: Crisis Looms In APC Over Power Sharing by DonColz1(m): 1:56am On Jan 04, 2014
The senator explained that the major task before the party at the moment was to register as many members as possible.
He said, “There are guidelines for party registration. We will follow the rules in Oyo State. As it were, our party is in the dominance in the state. The forthcoming registration of new members is a collective effort. Everybody is involved.
“This is not the time to start talking about someone using the exercise to hijack party structure. We are all using our political strengths and popularity to get as many members as possible from other parties so that we can retain our leadership position in the state.”
Lanlehin said, “We are all mobilising and sourcing for members now. We are fishing in the same water into the same boat. It is after that that the leaders could be talking of having those that will be loyal to them in the executive of the party during the congress that will come up later.
“We are working out modalities for that but it is not what you referred to as power tussle. It is just obvious that as leader you will want to have loyalists among the executives of the party but like I said it is not an issue that can lead to crisis at all.”
Attempts to get the reaction of the interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, were unsuccessful as he did not pick our correspondents’ calls to his phone.
Also, a text message sent to him was not replied as at the time of filing this report.
But in his reaction to some of the issues raised, the former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said the apprehension among some people was understandable.
He said, “All these apprehensions will be taken care of. We understand the apprehension of people but we are going to make sure there is real equality and that no person is unduly marginalised in the scheme of things because we must build a party where opportunities for all abound.”

Politics / Re: Crisis Looms In APC Over Power Sharing by DonColz1(m): 1:54am On Jan 04, 2014
In an attempt to douse growing tension between supporters of the Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau-led former members of the ANPP and the Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national headquarters of the party has set up a reconciliation committee headed by the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari.
Yari and Masari were given the task of drawing up a workable arrangement to accommodate the two leaders and their followers, and to prepare the ground for the party’s mobilisation and registration of members scheduled to begin this month.
A party source confided inSaturday PUNCHthat the situation in Kano was “a little complicated.”
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said: “Members of the political parties that merged to form the APC are suspicious of Kwankwaso.”
They argued that even while in the PDP, Kwankwaso scuttled attempts by Vice President Namadi Sambo to reconcile him and other aggrieved party members.
“Sambo was in Kano twice and each time an agreement was reached, Kwankwaso’s group breached the terms,” the source added.
When contacted, the Director of Press to Kano State governor, Baba Dantiye, said fears about Kwankwaso’s commitment were misplaced.
“His only concern is the salvation of this country. It is not about his interest; he is committed but it will be unfortunate if they feel that way even before the committee starts its work. His Excellency has an open mind and is ready to work with everybody.”
Also speaking on the issue, Shekarau’s spokesman, Sule Ya’u Sule, said, “We have always insisted on justice and fairness to all. We are waiting for the committee to come.”
However, other chieftains of a faction of the ANPP such as Alhaji Bashir Tofa and Senator Kabir Gaya among others, have since pledged allegiance to Kwankwaso, recognising him as the leader of the APC in the state.
The situation in Sokoto State is not any different as loyalists of former governor Attahiru Bafarawa have accused a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bello Masari, who heads the state reconciliation committee, of bias.
They insist that his actions have been tailored in favour of Governor Wamakko to the disadvantage of old members.
It was also learnt that there was a power tussle between Nyako and a former governorship candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change in Adamawa State, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa.
A source admitted that teething problems were bound to occur when a new party of APC’s magnitude is formed.
Marwa expressed confidence that the national leadership of the party was up to the task of dealing with the challenge.
He said this in a short message to one of our correspondents.
He said, “These teething problems will come up but I am aware that the national hierarchy of the party is attending to the issues and hopefully, will be resolved very soon. APC stands for internal democracy any day.”
Fears being expressed by party members are not limited to northern states.
Some members of the National Assembly have also cautioned the party against allowing state governors to hijack the process.
Senator Adegbenga Kaka (APC, Ogun-East) warned that any state governor, who attempts to hijack or manipulate the party membership registration exercise would be doing so at a great risk.
Kaka said any governor who attempted to do so would incur the wrath of party members.
He said, “No governor that is desirous of building a virile party will ever attempt to hijack or manipulate the registration of party members. They will not want to incur the wrath of would-be-members. I still maintain that we are all equal until registration is carried out. All intending members are equal no matter how highly placed anybody may be.”
But the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Ogun State, Alhaji Sola Lawal, also dismissed such fears.
He said those expressing fears over the membership registration exercise were only crying wolf where none existed.
Lawal said it would be impossible for any APC governor to manipulate or hijack the membership registration process in his state due to the magnitude of the exercise.
He said, “There is no reason for anyone to be apprehensive of the exercise. For one, the process is too open for anyone to manipulate. Every polling booth constitutes registration unit. In other words, prospective members of the party who vote in a polling booth in general elections are expected to be bona fide party members in that unit.
“It is therefore impossible to deny anyone registration. The governor or anyone for that matter is not capable of manipulating things in thousands of registration centres. It will be lazy of anyone to hide behind fear of interference to fail in doing what is right to mobilise supporters for the exercise. The field is free.”
Also speaking on the issue, the Senator representing Oyo-South, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, allayed such fears.
Politics / Crisis Looms In APC Over Power Sharing by DonColz1(m): 1:53am On Jan 04, 2014
Despite its growing acceptability within the country’s political circle, all appears not to be well with the All Progressives Congress as a crisis over power sharing and control is brewing in the party.
Investigation bySaturday PUNCHshowed that the five governors, who defected to the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party, were locked in a supremacy battle with some leaders of the three political parties that merged to form the APC.
The parties that merged to form APC are the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change.
Saturday PUNCH’sinvestigations in Abuja on Thursday showed that the looming crisis was threatening the nationwide membership registration, which the party had scheduled for early this year.
To forestall problem, however, the party has set up reconciliation committees in some of the affected states.
The governors, who left the PDP for the APC, included Alhaji Muritala Nyako (Adamawa); Dr. Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano); Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Alhaji Abdufatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Mr. Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers).
It was gathered that besides the struggle for position between the defected governors and ‘old’ members of the fast growing party, the APC was also contending with various crises in the states it is currently controlling.
The tussle for power in the APC states is principally between the governors and those who are against their total control of the state party structure.
It was learnt that the problem had manifested in Kwara, Kano, Sokoto and Adamawa states among others.
Findings showed that the outcome of the party’s reconciliation efforts would determine when the membership registration would hold.
The defected PDP governors that are said to be engaged in power struggle with old APC members include Nyako, Kwankanso, Wamakko and Ahmed.
In Kwara State for instance, members of the parties that merged to form the APC have described the leader of the PDP defectors, Senator Bukola Saraki, as a burden instead of an asset to the APC. Saraki is the political godfather of the state governor.
The members are of the opinion that the party does not need Saraki to win elections in the state. A former governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Dele Belgore, is the leader of the APC members opposed to Saraki’s take-over of the party.
A leading member of the Belgore group, Rev. Bunmi Olusona, said this in a statement, in Ilorin on Thursday.
In the statement titled, “Issues before the John Oyegun mediation committee,” Olusona stated, “We aver that we do not need Bukola Saraki to win elections in Kwara. In fact, the coming of Bukola Saraki is a huge burden on the Kwara APC.
“We now have a daunting task of convincing Kwarans that we remain a part of their hope for change. Without federal support, Bukola Saraki cannot win any election!
“We will never accept the leadership of Bukola Saraki and we will never accept any arrangement that cedes the party structure to any new entrant into the party.”
Another prominent member of the Belgore group, Dr. Saad Omo-Iya, also explained the group’s stand in an interview with one of our correspondents.
Omo-Iya said, “Saraki is a soloist and (a) despot. Some of us cannot work with him. That is why we are in the APC. Now that he has come to the APC, and it is being speculated that APC has handed over the party structure to him, that means some individuals own that party.
“It equally means that the party is no longer a party. It is like a property of some individuals. That does not really reflect democracy. Basically, looking at it, you can see that there is no basis for further relations.”
He said that the structure of the party should not be handed over to an individual, adding that registration of members should be free and fair.
However, Mr. Yemi Afoloyan, a former state Secretary of the Saraki-led PDP faction, toldSaturday PUNCHin an interview that claims that Saraki was a despot were untrue.
He described Saraki as a grass-roots political leader, who stepped into the shoes of his revered father, the late Chief Olusola Saraki.
Afolayan said, “One of the best things for Kwarans and the APC in the state is the handing over of the APC’s structure to Saraki. We have the election winning machinery and we win and deliver wherever we go. We have come to the APC with an election-winning machinery and we are sure the machinery will not fail.
“It will deliver anytime. Saraki has not said he is going to the APC to take over everything. He believes in egalitarian society. The door is open for integration of all the stakeholders and shades of opinions.
“What is paramount in the mind of our leader, is the continued transformation and development of our dear State of Harmony.”
Nairaland / General / Re: A Huge Crocodile Was Captured In Omole Estate (Lagos) by DonColz1(m): 1:40am On Jan 04, 2014
However, Alli said he had been surprised by his newfound popularity status in the neighbourhood since the incident, adding that security personnel had to be more vigilant in future.
“It surprised me that everyone has been talking about the incident. But I don’t think we did anything wrong by shooting the crocodile because it could have wounded somebody. I’m glad it didn’t attack anyone, so what we did was justified.”
Wild tales
Since the incident though, the neighbourhood has had its fair share of wild tales and gossips. Different accounts of the incident with varying sizes of the animal have been rendered from mouth to mouth in the estate that the facts have been blurred somewhere between the lines.
A commercial motorcyclist in the estate, who identified himself as Musa, toldSaturday PUNCHthat the animal that was caught had even spoken in human voice.
“It was very huge and almost as tall as this motorcycle. It spoke and demanded for human being to eat,” Musa insisted.

Frenzy Over Crocodile Caught In Lagos Posh Estate

It is rare to find wild animals roaming free in neighbourhoods, so Omole estate in Lagos was recently thrown into a state of excitement when a crocodile was caught in the gated neighbourhood.

The animal, which residents described as “very large”, became a spectacle at one of the gates to the estate, on Sunday, December 22, 2013. For residents not used to seeing wild animals lurking in their neighbourhoods, the sight was unexpected.

The animal had earlier been caught by the estate’s security operatives around 2am on Omotunde Akinsola Street, by Today’s Car, after it strayed from a swampland at one end of the neighbourhood. Three bullets shot at the animal did not kill it.

So the initial buzz of excitement generated by the incident soon turned to apprehension for residents. Some of them described the crocodile which was over six feet long, as frightening.

A resident living by the swamp where the animal was caught, who identified herself as Ogechi, said she heard three gunshots that morning, and had thought they were meant to scare away robbers.

“Now, there is a general fear in the area caused by the incident. It’s amazing finding such a wild animal around where people are living; I think it’s very dangerous because a crocodile should not be going about in a neighbourhood,” she said.

“I heard three shots around 2am and I thought maybe there were robbers around. I didn’t know an animal was being shot.”

For Ogechi, however, her lifestyle was bound to change as a result of the incident. “I will be more watchful because of the incident and even stop going out in the night,” she added.

Another resident, Aanu Oladapo, feared that there were more dangerous animals where the suspected crocodile had come out from. Oladapo said he had heard stories that wild animals paraded around the swampy area in the estate, but had not believed until the recent incident.

“I’d heard that such animals sometimes come out from the swamp but I never believed until now. I saw the crocodile live myself and it was really too big to be roaming a residential neighbourhood,” he said with a measure of concern.

Although, Garba Umaru, who works as a private security guard in the neighbourhood, had no cause to fear for himself. Considering his profession, Umaru was confident that he could take care of himself.

However, Umaru’s confident stance and voice seemed to waver with emotion as he spoke about his five young children.
Umaru, who put his “help in God”, said “big crocodiles can swallow a person, so my children’s safety is in God’s hands.”

Indeed, there have been concerns raised by construction workers about the threat of wildlife to the community. The workers often sight wild animals in the community since they usually lead forays into new development sites.

A construction worker working on a new building by the swamp, Shedraq Benson, said workers often see the wildlife or their imprints on marshy grounds.

Benson said he often sees imprints of crawling snakes and reptiles on marshlands that had just been cleared for the start of building development.

He said, “Sometimes, we see large snakes and crocodiles. Once, I saw the imprint of a very large snake. By the marks left on the ground, I could see that a large snake which was more than a foot in width had just crawled on the ground. I was afraid to work on the site that day for fear of meeting it face to face.”

Benson added that he had also once seen a bigger reptile than the one recently caught by security operatives in the neighbourhood.

“Two of us saw the crocodile, but our machetes could not cut it at all. So we went to see if we could get a gun but it had gone by the time we got back,” Benson said.

Benson’s work partner, Pius Okere, killed a crocodile that also strayed from the swamp in 2012. However, Okere said the crocodile was small.
“The ones we’re killing are not the big ones; they are probably the kids. The big ones are still inside the swamp,” he said.

Meanwhile, the two security operatives who captured the crocodile have been made local heroes by their deed, even though their deed is what animal rights activists would look at with dismay.

One of the security operatives, Abu Alli, said he shot the animal three times after being notified by his colleague, identified as Itoro.
Recounting the incident, Alli said, “My colleague sighted the crocodile moving inside a residence, but he didn’t have a gun. He managed to divert the animal’s movement into a drainage, where it got stuck because it was too big.

“So he came to call me and when I got there, I shot it three times. I’m sure that one of the bullets hit it in the head, but it didn’t die. We later tied a rope round its leg and drew it to the estate gate, where residents had a view of it in daylight. The incident happened at about 2am and by noon, someone bought it from us for N20,000. The animal was still alive when we sold it.”

Politics / Nigeria Assumes Membership Of UN Security Council For The 5th Time by DonColz1(m): 1:27pm On Jan 03, 2014
United Nations – Nigeria on Thursday formally assumed the membership of the UN Security Council for a two-year term (2014-2015), making it the fifth time the nation had been elected into the council.
The nation’s term for the non-permanent seat of the council began on Jan. 1, but due to the New Year holiday, the council could not sit.
Nigeria was on Oct. 16, 2012 elected into the world body with 186 votes out of 193.
UN Council has five permanent members comprising China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the U.S. as well as 10 other non-permanent members which are elected for two years by the 193 members of the UN General Assembly.
Earlier, following the admission of Nigeria into the council, Prof. Joy Ogwu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, had assured that Nigeria would promote preventive diplomacy for peace as a fulcrum of its agenda.
The permanent representative also noted that Nigeria was driven by a deep seated aspiration to deal with issues of peace, security and development not only in Africa but the rest of the world.
“So to this effect, we will work assiduously with all members of the security council to represent all other member states and to fulfil the renewed mandate that we have received today,’’ Ogwu said.
The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, had assured the international community that Nigeria would continue to work in the area of preventive diplomacy.
Onwuliri also said that Nigeria would focus on mediation and prevention of conflict situations in Africa.
“We need to have a strong voice to help the UN to deal with issues in Africa. African issues are the majority of issues facing the UN Security Council today,’’ she said.
Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the UN, is the President of the Security Council for the month of January. (NAN)

Politics / Re: An Open Letter To CBN Governor Sanusi by DonColz1(m): 1:37am On Jan 03, 2014
The second issue you might want to take a look at concerns the problems of unemployment and the challenges that business startups face in Nigeria. All over the world, small businesses are the engine of growth and employment. They are central to economic prosperity. Although so much is said about the desire for entrepreneurial development in Nigeria, not much is being done to provide the enabling environment for businesses to start and thrive.

Reading an article about the growing success of the BRIC nations recently, I discovered that increase in new business startups is said to be40 times faster in BRIC nations than other countries, a reason for which the BRIC economies are getting more robust. According to the report, one of the factors responsible for this is the continued reduction in the bottlenecks for business registration and the governments’ conscious efforts at seeing that banks lend to small businesses at reasonable interests rates, usually not more than one digit. Two things happen in Nigeria currently: One is that interest rates are unreasonably high. The second is that banks are not willing to lend to the productive sector especially small and medium businesses. It is therefore curious that we expect our economy to grow and unemployment to diminish. You have said on some occasions that it is not possible for the CBN to dictate interest rates but will things go on like this forever? Should we continue to hope that this economy will develop in spite of SMEs which have proved to be the backbone of other economies? Is it possible to do something about this before you finally leave office?

This then brings up questions on the general application of universal banking in Nigeria. I imagine that your administration would work towards the entrenchment of mortgage banking for instance. I am of the opinion that the lack of infrastructure for the provision of the basic necessities like housing, transport and such for Nigerians partly accounts for the disgraceful level of corruption in the country.

It is therefore unlikely that the shameless stealing and compromises going on in the country will stop without securing the future of civil servants and political office holders with measures like mortgages among others.

I do not know how much of all this makes sense to you or whether it is even possible for you to do anything more before you leave office. But you should at least ensure that you do not leave us with a story of the recklessness which you said was rampant before you came into office. We recently learnt that one bank sacked 200 employees in the same week in which it spent a whopping N200m on inviting an American singer to Nigeria. I agree that organisations have a right to spend their money anyhow but I do not see how to justify such expenditure in the wake of the dismissal of such a huge number of people. That cannot be the kind of practice that you want to leave behind.

I wish you the best in your future endeavours.

Politics / An Open Letter To CBN Governor Sanusi by DonColz1(m): 1:11am On Jan 03, 2014
Dear Lamido Sanusi,

Let me start by wishing you a very happy New Year and congratulate you on the near completion of your tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. That can be no mean task, especially with the complexities of the nation and the unpredictability of politicians that you have to deal with.

I should also say that you seem to have played the politics of the office well, sometimes on the side of the people. I cannot finish telling of the number of times that you have blown the whistle on the tendency for profligacy among political office holders and the lack of accountability on the part of those in charge of our national resources. I remember your spat with the members of the National Assembly over how much they cost the nation in overheads. You can be counted amongst the few Nigerians who have identified the root causes of insurgencies and violent crimes that we see over the land. On a number of occasions, you have spoken about the dangers of not educating the children and not providing employment for millions of youths roaming our streets. You have given a mass-oriented, almost leftist bent, to the office of the CBN Governor.

I remember your philanthropic acts. I never heard any previous holder of your office who had been so kind to Nigerians, donating money here and relief materials there; you are just one in a class! You appeared ready for the politics, making some of our compatriots wonder whether you were a banker or a politician, sometimes.

Forgive me if I do not have the technical words to describe the impact of your tenure on the banking industry. I am just an ordinary Nigerian who does not have a good head for banking and finance terms. However, I am quite aware of what is going on in my environment and can break them down in the lay man’s language that I understand.

You approached your office with uncommon seriousness. Not long after you came into office, you raised the red flag about the activities of some of our banking institutions. You fired the management of five banks namely, Intercontinental Bank, Union Bank, Oceanic Bank, Afribank and Bank PHB. You did not just appoint interim management to superintend over these banks, you went ahead to change their names, a move which many say remains unprecedented in Nigerian history.

You spoke about unhealthy practices in these banks, promised that the perpetrators would pay and truly, this happened. Some went to jail for a while, some forfeited property, some went on exile while some are in court as we speak. All of this was, according to you, to sanitise the sector.

Nigeria has you to thank for the cashlite and cashless policy. That has undoubtedly moved the Nigerian financial system a tad closer to what happens in forward looking countries.

I remember the endless campaigns that you were a hatchet man. The ceaseless advertorials calling for your removal. Talk about your plan to entrench the interest of your sponsors. But those who appointed you did not dignify these campaigns as is evident in the fact that you have lived out your tenure.

I know that experts in the banking industry will soon take a look at your tenure, how you fared in office and how deeply your reforms have reflected on the economy but this correspondence has a totally different objective. As you are on the verge of leaving office, I am persuaded to send you this message with the hope that you might consider taking a few steps which might give Nigerians fond memories of your tenure.

For starters, it seems to me that the banks are just not out of the woods yet. Just before you came into office, it was an industry where a lot of young people aspired to work but that is not the case today. For so many reasons (which I cannot enumerate here), one of which is insecurity of tenure, banking is currently an unattractive industry for the best minds in the country. I suggest that you look into the extreme pressure under which fresh entrants and middle level officers in the industry work, even with no assurances that they will not be sent away without commensurate benefits the next day.

That brings me to the issue of the casualties of your intervention in those five banks. Hundreds of those employed in these banks lost their jobs in the wake of your reforms. While it is trite in labour law that you cannot force employees on an unwilling employer, it is bad that most of these people were sent away without any benefits years after they joined the employ of the banks. Imagine hundreds of bread winners suddenly out of jobs without any safety nets whatsoever. I do not think that the CBN, under you, should look the other way on this matter, given your position on the rate of unemployment especially.
Politics / Pump Price Of Petrol Will Not Be Increased- FG Assures Nigerians by DonColz1(m): 6:39pm On Jan 02, 2014
The Federal government has no plans to increase the pump price of PMS.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Danladi Kifasi, on Thursday assured Nigerians that the Federal Government has no plans to increase the pump price of petrol.
Mr. Kifasi said this in a statement made available in Abuja.
He emphasised that government has no plans to increase the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, from the prevailing price of N97 per litre.
The Permanent Secretary dismissed fears in some quarters about an impending price hike describing it as “unfounded”.
“We would like to appeal to Oil Marketers to refrain from the hoarding of petroleum products and the general public from panic buying in anticipation of any increase in pump price.
“It is equally important to state that neither the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources nor any of its parastatal is under any instruction to activate a new pump price regime as being speculated,” he said.
Mr. Kifasi further warned petroleum product marketers to desist from creating any scarcity so as to induce panic in the system in order to exploit unsuspecting members of the public.
“The relevant agencies of government including the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been directed to deal with offenders,” he said.
Mr. Kifasi assured that the government had made enough arrangements to ensure that the entire nation remains `wet` with petroleum products round the clock in 2014 just as it has been the practice in the last three years.

Politics / Jonathan Signed Single Tenure Agreement –nyako by DonColz1(m): 1:09am On Jan 01, 2014
Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako on Tuesday said that despite several denials, President Goodluck Jonathan signed a document agreeing to serve for a single term.
Nyako said this in an interview with journalists in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
He explained that genuine leaders were men of honour who would be sincere to their colleagues and the society in general, no matter the circumstance.
The governor said, “In the first place, when that agreement was brought for me to sign, I told them that this President (Jonathan), in the agreement signed in the year 2003, he was number 73.
“Did we not agree under (ex-President Olusegun) Obasanjo that the term 2007 and 2011 belong to the North?
“He was number 73 as deputy governor of Bayelsa State, so when they came, they said I should sign, they said he had agreed that he would not contest in the year 2015.
“In the first place, I said I did not believe him because he didn’t give his pledge for the agreement signed in the year 2003. They said ah, ah,Baba Maimangoro. I said ok, I will sign. So I signed.”
When asked who brought the agreement for him to sign, he said his northern colleagues, including the Niger State governor, Babangida Aliyu; and his Katsina State counterpart, Ibrahim Shema, among others.
The Adamawa State governor noted that ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo led Jonathan to ask him (Nyako) to support Jonathan, who he said had agreed to serve for only one term.
“Obj (Obasanjo) will tell you, he came here and pleaded with me to support Jonathan in 2011. He came here and virtually took an oath to serve only one term,” Nyako said.
Asked if Obasanjo came in company with Jonathan, Nyako replied “Absolutely! That he was going to serve for only one term.”
He said that when Jonathan went to Obasanjo to seek for his support for 2015, the former President reminded him of the commitment he made.
Nyako further said, “The Niger State governor has the agreement. We want to deal with people with honour, not people who want to drag us into civil war because of impunity, because of lawlessness, because of not fulfilling their pledges, that will only take us to civil war.
“Leaders must be honest with their colleagues and the greater society. I have mycraw crawfrom the first civil war and if there is need to develop anothercraw crawin another civil war I will stand by.”
Aliyu’s spokesman, Danladi Ndayabo, could not be reached for comments as at the time of filing this report.
A response to the text message sent to him was still being awaited as at the time of filing this report.
The Presidency has denied in the past that the President signed any agreement not to seek reelection.
Nyako also said the declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa State was purely political because the state had the security situation under control.
He explained that the state was not even among the first seven states, out of a list of 12, which had serious security challenges but that the President skipped several states to pick on his state for inexplicable political reasons.
