Politics / Fire Burns Down Jankara Market And Three Houses In Lagos State by DonColz1(m): 4:03am On Dec 31, 2013
Traders at the Jankara International Market in the Ijaye-Ojokoro area of Lagos State woke up on Monday to discover that a portion of the market had been razed by fire. Used vehicles and auto spare parts are sold in the market.
As the traders were mourning their losses, hundreds of people were also rendered homeless, while property worth millions of naira were destroyed in another fire outbreak at Obi Osa Street in the Itire-Ijesha area of the state.
It was learnt that the fire at the Jankara Market was caused by an electrical surge few minutes to midnight. It quickly ravaged the entire section where the incident occurred.
A trader, who identified himself simply as Steve, said due to the time of the incident, the fire had wreaked havoc before it was discovered, and by the time it was put out by fire service men, a lot of goods had been destroyed.
He said, “No fewer than 15 vehicles were destroyed, while 10 shops, where engines, gears and other spare parts were kept, were completely razed. Many of us are now in debt as the property are worth millions of naira.”
When our correspondent visited the market, many of the traders were seen lamenting their losses.
The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Fadipe Idowu, confirmed the incident.
He said, “Nine different brands of vehicles and 12 lock up shops were severely damaged. The fire was prevented from spreading to other shops and vehicles in the market.”
The Obi Osa Street inferno was said to have started around 1pm on Monday. It gutted three houses.
Panicky residents were seen battling to save some of their property from the fury of the raging flame.
According to the spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, the fire was caused by an electric spark in one of the affected residential buildings.
Farinloye, however, added that despite the huge material loss, nobody died.
He said, “Our investigation reveals the fire started after an electric spark around 1pm. We got to know around 2pm and we got there soon afterwards. Although the fire did much damage and wrecked three houses, no life was lost, except for one person who was injured.”

Politics / PDP Can Never Win In Nigeria Again — Amaechi by DonColz1(m): 1:12am On Dec 29, 2013
AHEAD of the 2015 presidential election, the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said unless the Peoples Democratic Party embraces rigging, it can never win elections in the country.
The governor, who made this remark while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday night, said with the exodus of PDP members to the All Progressives Congress, the ruling party was on its way out of power.
He said, “Most of you may have known that I have since left the PDP to a better party called the All Progressives Congress because the PDP is a drowning party and the facts remain that PDP is a drowning party.
“Watch out before March if we don’t have the numbers that we are looking for. So, you can’t call us opposition anymore because there are three arms of government and only two are electable; the executive and legislature.
“Yes, the PDP has the national executive, but we are inching close to having the legislature. Who then would be called the opposition if we have it?”
Amaechi, who predicted that more governors would defect to the APC in 2014, disclosed that one of the reasons why he left the PDP was as a result of the attempt by President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, to interfere in the governance of Rivers State.
He also cited the ceding of Rivers resources to other states, the absence of Federal Government projects in the state and bad governance as the reasons why he dumped the PDP.
“But the basic reason why we left is the resources of Rivers State. I have told all of you on several occasions that the wife of the President was not elected the governor of Rivers State. I am the governor of Rivers State and husband to Judith Amaechi.
“I left because of the attempt by the wife of the President to micromanage governance in Rivers. I said no, you can’t; so that if I fail, they will not say the wife of the President failed, Governor Amaechi failed. I am accountable to God and to men and women,” he added.
Amaechi, however, said Nigerian politicians were averse to telling the truth and blamed Nigerians for the lack of interest in knowing the truth.
Recalling his claim that the Federal Government could not account for the sum of $49.8 bn and N2.3 trn oil subsidy, Amaechi said governors, at a time, refused to collect their states’ monthly allocations for three months.
He said, “When the politician reel out numbers, you should hold him accountable to the numbers he has reeled out. If you don’t hold them accountable, he will just say anything he likes.
“When I said the Federal Government could not account for $49.8 bn, they said, Amaechi, how did you know and I pulled out the letter and said the authority is the CBN governor.
“So, let him deny it. When I said they could not account for N2.3 trn for oil subsidy, they say what is your source? I was in the meeting with the President. We told the President that under General Obasanjo, the total oil money was N300 bn. The first year of President Goodluck Jonathan, 2011, oil subsidy became N2.3 trn. Did we buy more machines, expanded Nigeria?”

Politics / One Killed, 10 Injured As Police And MASSOB Members Clash In Onitsha by DonColz1(m): 1:34am On Dec 28, 2013
One person was reportedly killed yesterday in Onitsha while 10 others sustained various degrees of injuries during a clash between the police and members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB.
According to an eye witnes, trouble started when a motorist was allegedly flagged down along the Onitsha/Owerri Road in Onitsha by a police team on surveillance and as he obeyed, argument reportedly ensued between the motorist and the police.
The MASSOB members around, who have been controlling the traffic since the yuletide season began, felt they should come to the rescue of the man and reportedly intervened. The action, it was learnt, led to heated argument which resulted in a cladh between MASSOB and police which resulted in the death of one MASSOB member instantly.
Consequently, the MASSOB members in anger barricaded the ever-busy Onitsha / Owerri road for two hours and made bonfire with fairly used tyres, forcing traffic flow to divert to the Obosi by-pass.
The corpse of the dead MASSOB member was said to have been taken to the Awada Police Station.
Contacted on the incident, the Onitsha Police Area commander, Mr. Benjamin Wordu confirmed the incident but said that trouble started when MASSOB and a rival group had a bloody clash.

Politics / Battered Pregnant Woman: Lagos Police Arrest Lebanese Boss by DonColz1(m): 1:24am On Dec 28, 2013
The Lagos State Police Command on Friday arrested Kaveh Noine, a manager with Toppan Printing Company, who allegedly kicked his pregnant subordinate, Alexandra Ossai, in the stomach two weeks ago, causing her to lose her pregnancy.
PUNCH Metrohad, on Tuesday, exclusively reported that Noine, a Lebanese, travelled out of the country when policemen attached to the Area F Police Division initially went to the company, to invite him for questioning.
Following the publication, President Goodluck Jonathan, had on Friday directed that the police and the National Human Rights Commission investigate the matter, expressing his displeasure over the incident.
However,Saturday PUNCHgathered that Noine was arrested on Friday by the Lagos State Police Command in Kano where he had fled to on Friday and brought him back to Lagos.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the story. She said, “Even before President Goodluck Jonathan ordered an investigation into the case, the Lagos State Police Command has been on it.
“In the course of our investigation, we discovered that Noine was still in the country; he had fled to Kano. Our men traced him to Kano, arrested him and have brought him back to Lagos.
“Presently, he is making his statement now at the command. The issue of bail, has not come up for now.”
Ossai had inPUNCH Metro’sDecember 24, 2013 publication, alleged that Noine assaulted her several times during her eight months stay at the company. Noine had allegedly hit Ossai in the chest a day before kicking her in her stomach over some misdemeanor by those whom Ossai supervised.
She also alleged that Noine was in the habit of physically assaulting workers at the company with anything he could lay his hands on, whenever he was angry.
The 34-year-old mother of one was said to have developed pains in her tummy which lasted for two days before subsiding. The pains were said to have begun again in the early hours of December 16, 2013, resulting into an emergency surgery at a private hospital at Fagba.
Her seven-month pregnancy was allegedly lost to the kick, as a result of a broken placenta. Ossai’s appointment with the company was allegedly terminated as a result of the incident and two of her siblings who also worked there were sacked.
Already, the Lagos State Public Advice Centre has waded into the case and offered Ossai free legal aid. The Public Relations Officer of the centre, Mr. Alex Omorodion, said, “We are going to liaise with other security agencies in Lagos State to see this matter to a logical conclusion. We also intend to visit the factory and talk with other workers to determine if more people have been abused by Noine. Then we will prosecute Noine at the conclusion of our investigation.”
WhenSaturday PUNCHcontacted Ossai, she said, “I am really happy about the arrest. The rest is left to the police and my lawyer.”

Politics / Federal Government To Recover Benin Artifacts by DonColz1(m): 12:21am On Dec 28, 2013
Efforts are underway by the Federal Government to recover Benin artifacts illegally taken away from the shores of the country.
Director General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Yusuf Usman, disclosed this on Friday when curators from northeastern states visited in Abuja.
He said, “We are engaging other museums and European countries to regain all Benin artifacts.
“We want foreign museums to accept first that these are Nigerian objects. That they were taken out of Nigeria during the colonial period when there were no laws or that they were taken through the porous borders does not reduce the fact that they are Nigerian objects.”
Yusuf said that 100 heritage sites have been discovered by the commission across the country.
He said the sites would be declared as national monuments in January by President Goodluck Jonathan to celebrate the centenary amalgamation of the country.
He said, “All the communities where the sites are located have been contacted. After the notice given out in the newspapers, which is part of the condition, we hope the President will declare them as national monuments to celebrate the amalgamation of the southern and northern protectorates.”
Usman also revealed that the commission had recovered many artifacts from the United States, France, Canada and a few others, adding that efforts were on to recover many others from foreign and private museums.
“These have been brought back to Nigeria through diplomatic channels,” he said.

Crime / Re: Car Accidents Kill 9 In Lagos And Cross River On Christmas Day by DonColz1(m): 1:44am On Dec 26, 2013
The NEMA spokesperson, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye said, “The incident happened at 8.30am, but we were not alerted till around 11.46am. NEMA was able to mobilise other rescue officials to the scene. At the end of the rescue operation, a woman and her baby with two men died, while a lady was rescued alive. She however had a fractured leg. The corpses have been taken to a mortuary in Oshodi.”

The police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back to give details on the accident.

In Cross River, four youths were on Tuesday killed, while several others were injured after a Mercedes Benz 911 truck rammed into them by the road side at the Akamkpa area of the Calabar-Ikom highway.

The incident, which occurred around the state’s college of education in Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area, left the community in mourning.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the truck with number plate, Lagos FKJ 505 XC, was immediately burnt by angry mob, while the driver, Chidi Duruba, and the truck conductor, Edwin Oragunye, were thoroughly beaten up.

Two of the injured persons are Blessing Etim and Okechukwu Mbaka. The whereabouts of the six other injured persons could not be immediately ascertained.

An eyewitness, Ekam Emmanuel, said, “About 6am on Tuesday, some youths from Mbarakom community decided to go for a road walk along the Calabar-Ikom highway.

“A Mercedes Benz 911 truck with the number plate, FKJ 505 XC rammed into them from behind and the incident claimed four lives on the spot while several others were injured.

“This incident happened at 6am when I came to clean my shop. I met the youths jogging on the highway but suddenly a truck coming from Calabar on high speed climbed on the four that died on the spot.

“As a result of the tragedy, the Mbarakom youths got angry, the truck driver and his conducter were almost killed when they stopped to see what had happened. They were seriously beaten up, while the truck was set ablaze.”

Emmanuel said another truck, marked Cross River, KAM 45 XA, was also forcefully stopped by the angry mob and set ablaze. He added that the driver escaped being lynched.

She said the anger continued as the youths further burnt another oncoming Audi 80 commercial car, adding that the intervention of the combined team of military and police patrol teams brought the situation under control.

A police officer in the Akamkpa division, Eric Bassey, who is of the traffic department, confirmed the report. He said, “The DPO got an early morning distress call that there was a riot going on in Awi. He immediately gave us orders and on getting to the scene we discovered that three vehicles were burnt and some casualties were there.

“The casualties included some dead bodies, while several others, who sustained injuries, were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“We were informed that the driver and the conductor of the truck that caused the accident were being held hostage at Mbarakom. We acted swiftly, but discovered that they had been beaten up badly. We rescued them and took them to the General Hospital at Akamkpa where they are still receiving treatment.”

He said peace had been restored in the troubled community.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, confirmed the incident, adding that the police had been able to bring the situation under control.

Politics / My Abductors Demanded Dollars – Ex-primate, Dr Peter Akinola by DonColz1(m): 1:36am On Dec 26, 2013
A former Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Dr. Peter Akinola, on Wednesday recounted his ordeal in the hands of the gunmen who abducted him, his daughter and driver on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He said that the armed men took them into a forest where they took off his shirt and shoes and then demanded dollars.
The cleric, noted for his outspokenness on national and international issues, added that his driver was not as lucky as he was stripped down to his boxers.
Akinola, who spoke to a congregation during a Christmas service in Abeokuta, said that his daughter, driver and himself, were rescued because of God’s benevolence.
The retired cleric added that he had gone to the secretariat of the youth training centre he established in Abeokuta to give Christmas presents to the workers when two armed men appeared and whisked the three of them away .
He said that in the forest, the gunmen insisted that he must give the dollars in his Sports Utility Vehicle.
Expressing surprise at the rate with which the news of the incident spread, Akinola added that Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, personally led the search for their rescue.
He said, “I left my house at about 11am (on Tuesday) for our site where we are building structures to train young people in Nigeria who are unemployed. The irony of it is that as I was coming out of the place where I had gone to give food to our workers for Christmas, two young men came out of their car from nowhere. They asked me to open the door, knocking the glass with their guns.
“I instructed my driver, Jonah, to open the door for them. They sandwiched us at the back of the car and they drove off. They told us to put our heads down and that they would blow off our heads if we looked up. They drove for about an hour, where we didn’t know until we discovered that we were in a thick forest. Then I requested to talk and informed them that there was no enough fuel in the car.
“They queried us for not having enough fuel in the car and my driver responded that we just returned from a journey. In the bush , I was surprised at how they were able to locate a filling station, bought N3,000 fuel and we continued with the journey. That was about 3pm.
“They started asking questions about dollars but I said there was none. I told them I was a village pastor that had just retired and that the car was given to me by the church. They asked about the security of the car and I told them there was none. They searched for it for almost two hours but couldn’t find anything.
“I was just praying for God of mercy to come to our rescue. I was just remembering how God saved some believers in the Bible and I concluded that if I must die, it must not be in the hands of these people.
“Unknown to us, the news had started circulating and people had started praying. Meanwhile they had taken everything from us; they had taken my shirt, my shoes and I was left with only my singlet and trousers. But my driver was not so lucky; his shirt, trousers and shoes were taken and he was left with only his boxers.
“They said I should walk; when we moved about hundred metres from the car, I was asked to take the left while my driver was asked to take the right. While inside the bush, I was hearing them threatening my driver.
“After a while, we started hearing gun shots. Apparently, the police were around. Later, we learnt that the governor, the commissioner of police and the secretary to the state government led the rescue team. When we no longer heard any gunshot, I trekked back to the footpath calling my driver.
“Not quite long, I saw them approaching me, I raised my hands and told them it was my car that they took and that I was looking for my driver. They said they were policemen and that I should come into the car.
He commended the team which, according to him, engaged the gunmen in a gun battle before they regained their freedom.
Akinola said, “The leader of the police team called TJ was a wonderful man. For the first time in my life, I doff my hat for the police for their performance. This same man, a Muslim, approached me and said they have heard about what I’ve been doing, that I should not stop, saying God has preserved my life for this purpose.
“It was just beyond my imagination that I came back in peace but was worried about my driver whom I later found out was in a hospital.”

Politics / I Fasted For 10 Months To Become Governor – Amaechi by DonColz1(m): 1:25am On Dec 26, 2013
RIVERS State Governor and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum has attributed the increasing level of insecurity in the Federal Government.
He also said God, and not man, installed him as the state governor because he fasted and prayed for 10 months before he became the governor.
Amaechi said rather than chase criminals away from the state, the police had decided to shoot innocent citizens.
The governor, who spoke at Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said insecurity in the state was growing because the police had failed to do their job in an unbiased manner.
Maintaining that his government was installed by Jesus Christ, Amaechi urged the people to disregard those who claimed to be responsible for his emergence as the governor of the state.
He said, “As a government led by me, a government installed by Christ, if anybody tells you he installed me, tell him it is a lie. Tell him that I said I prayed for 10 months and I fasted from 6am to 6pm, calling on Christ to come down and Christ came down mightily and installed me as governor.
“That is why you can see that in the face of human effontery, I have been able to stand face to face with them and I say I have Christ in me.
“You must rise in that same spirit of having Christ in you and confront those who are confronting you. You must stand up for Christ because the Bible says ‘faith without work is dead.’
“We must not die. We must live and the way to live is to celebrate Christ and the way to celebrate Christ is to confront Satan and Satan is in different forms and shapes.
“If the police shoot at you, they are satanic. If government denies you your right to live, that government is satanic,” Amaechi added.
“All these you may want to attribute to political disagreement in Rivers State; but it is not true. It is simply because of those who lead us in Abuja; because the police is an establishment of the Federal Government and they have refused to curb the excesses of the police.
“Instead of the police to chase away criminals, they are shooting at innocent citizens. Don’t stop at praying. We knew we prayed, but as you pray, you must rise on your feet and confront the challenges of insecurity.”

Crime / Car Accidents Kill 9 In Lagos And Cross River On Christmas Day by DonColz1(m): 12:23am On Dec 26, 2013
It was a bloody Christmas celebration in Lagos and Cross River states as no fewer than nine persons were killed in auto accidents on Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning.

Five people comprising a baby, her mother, two brothers and a driver died on Wednesday in the Lagos State accident, while four youths died in the Cross River accident.

In Lagos, our correspondent learnt that apart from the five people that perished on Christmas day, another lady suffered a fracture after a container which was on an articulated truck fell on a commercial bus on Alaba Suru Road in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun area of Lagos.

Eyewitnesses said the baby, her mother, the two brothers and the bus driver, who were victims of the accident, were returning from the Lagos Island.

It was said the two brothers went to purchase bangers for the New Year celebration.

The crash was said to have been caused by a mentally unstable woman, who laid in the middle of the road, thereby creating confusion for the truck driver who was on top speed.

Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the yellow LT bus, with number plate, MUS-975-XC, had also stopped by the side of the road to drop off a passenger, which precipitated the accident.

A resident, Mohammed Wasiu, said, “The incident happened around 8.30am. I saw the mad woman walking around this morning. She just decided to sleep on the road at that time.

“The LT bus was going towards Mile 2. There were about eight people in the bus. The driver decided to stop because someone wanted to get down from the bus.

“As this was going on, the truck was coming on full speed. There were two trucks; one was already ahead, so the second truck driver wanted to catch up.

“When he got to that point and saw the mad woman on the road, he wanted to avoid crushing her. As he maneuvered the truck, its side hit the bus, and the container fell on the bus.”

Wasiu said residents immediately rushed to the scene and began to cut the vehicle with saws in order to save the occupants who were in pain.

Another eyewitness, who did not identify himself, said, “The two brothers who were at the back of the bus were trapped. They had packs of bangers that they just bought. The woman, who wore a shawl, and was carrying a baby, could not also escape. They all died, including the driver.

“It was only a lady that was at the entrance to the door that escaped with a fracture.”

After the accident, angry residents were said to have seized the mentally unstable lady and beaten her up. Some of the residents said it was the second time she would trigger such accident. She was, however, rescued by policemen.

At the rescue operation scene were officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, policemen, and the Lagos State Emergency Medical Services.

Crime / ‘I Strangled My Son To Death Because There’s No Babysitter’ - Titilayo by DonColz1(m): 1:35am On Dec 24, 2013
A 20-year-old woman, Titilayo Odedele, has told an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court that she strangled her two year old child, Opeyemi, because she could not afford a babysitter for him.
The incident was said to have happened at Ajagunro, Imota Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The defendant, who was arraigned on one count of murder, said she had no one to help her take care of the child after she was impregnated and thrown out of her parent’s home.
Addressing the court in tears, she said, “I only finished Primary six, and I did not attend secondary school before I was impregnated.
“On that Friday night, I attended a vigil and wanted to drop the child there and run away, but didn’t know what to do.
“On Saturday morning, I left the place and wrapped him up in a cloth. When I saw that nobody was with us, I put my hand on his neck and started to squeeze it till he died.”
The magistrate, O.O Olatunji, who was obviously shocked by the defendant’s action, said she could have left the baby in the church for people to take, instead of killing him.
He said, “How did you kill him? Was he not crying each time you pressed his neck?”
She replied, “Each time I squeezed his neck, he cried, but I just kept pressing till he died. I don’t know what entered into me.”
It was learnt that Oladele lost her mother at an early age, and her father got married to another woman. The accused was said to have been sent out of the house soon afterwards.
The investigating police officer, Fatai Popoola, in a remand request, indicated that Odedele was arrested the day after the incident on the road.
He said she had also made confessional statements to the police.
The murder charge read, “That you, Titilayo Oladele, on November 16, 2013 at Ajagunro, Imota Ikorodu, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Opeyemi Ibrahim, aged two years, by strangulating him to death with your hands and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.”
The defendant’s plea was not taken, as she also did not have any legal representation or family member in court.
The police prosecutor, Cyriacus Osuji, applied for her remand pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Lagos State 2011.
The magistrate granted the remand request and ordered her to be put in prison pending the Directorate of Public Prosecution advice. The case was adjourned till February 3, 2014 for mention.

Politics / First Ladies Are ‘Executive Prisoners’ – Aregbesola’s wife by DonColz1(m): 12:23am On Dec 24, 2013
Wife of Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Sherifat, on Monday described all first ladies in Nigeria as ‘executive prisoners.’
The first ladies comprised of the wife of the President and wives of the state governors.
Mrs. Aregbesola, who spoke in an interview with journalists before the end of the year party she organised for children in Osogbo, said contrary to the belief that first ladies were enjoying, she said that governors’ wives had no freedom to live the way they liked.
She said that herself and her colleagues were involved in some projects in order not to be useless throughout their stay at the various Government Houses.
She said, “All first ladies are executive prisoners. They are all here now (referring to security aides) and I can’t go to anywhere without them following me.
“Who among the First Ladies is free? Who among First Ladies can go anywhere they like? All the First Ladies are executive prisoners. We can only dress like this and smile to the cameras but we are executive prisoners.”
Wife of Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime, Clara, recently cried out that she had been detained in the Government House, where she allegedly suffered depression. She has however been set free by her husband and has left the Government House.
Mrs. Aregbesola said that her husband was a very simple and caring man whom she would want to marry again.
He debunked the speculations that the governor was a religious fanatic, saying that her husband allowed children living under his roof to practice Christianity despite that he was a Muslim.
She said, “My husband is a very simple man. He is a very nice man and I wonder where those behind the rumour get their information from. I have lived with him for more than 30 years. I know him very well. He is very simple and kind. He is very passionate about the development of the state. He works so hard to ensure that things are working well.
“My husband allows everybody to practise their religions. His immediate younger sister is a Christian. Two of her children are living with us now and they go to church. I encourage them to go to church on Sunday.
“His younger brother, Rafiu, is a Christian; I mean he is a deacon. There are Ladi and Sikira who are Christians. The rumour about him being a fanatic is all about politics.”
