Crime / Man Jailed Five Years For Selling Child For N10m by DonColz1(m): 6:15am On Nov 24, 2013
A Niger State magistrate court sitting in Minna, the state capital, has sentenced one Isah Aliyu to five years imprisonment for intending to sell his 9-year-old child for N10m.
The 30-year-old man attributed his action to poverty.
The incident occurred on November 15 when the buyer, one Mallam Magaji, agreed to buy the child for N7 million.
But the buyer promised to pay half of the money and balance at a later date. The father of the child was said to have refused because of his desperation to collect the N7 million at once.
After the negotiation, the father agreed to the half payment but, instead of bringing the money, the buyer headed for the police station to report the deal.
*Court
The police then followed Magaji to the meeting place and arrested Aliyu who was still waiting for the money so that he could hand over his son. Aliyu was charged to court under the clause prohibiting selling of child in the Niger State Child’s Right Act.
Aliyu pleaded guilty and was summarily sentenced to five years imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Hassan Mohammed.
When asked why he intended to sell his son, the convict said, “The poverty in the country is biting and things are difficult for me and my family. I felt since the boy was under my custody and he is my son, I could sell him and use the money to cater for the rest of the family.”
The Chief Magistrate described his reason as inhuman, adding that poverty was not a strong reason for the father to sell his son.
He sentenced Aliyu to five years imprisonment without option of fine.

Politics / PDP Vows To Win Lagos In 2015 by DonColz1(m): 6:08am On Nov 24, 2013
The Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party has kicked off a series of strategy sessions aimed at winning the 2015 governorship election in the state.
At a seminar, with a theme: Demystifying the power of incumbency, organised by the Alimosho Local Government chapter of PDP, leaders of the party said they had all it takes to defeat the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, but had suffered electoral losses due to disunity.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of PDP in Lagos, Capt. Tunji Shelle, said members of the party had gathered to weigh their options for 2015 governorship election in the state and identify factors that had sabotaged their efforts during election.
He said, “PDP has been in Lagos since 1998 but we have not won the state. We are here to find the cause of the problem. We need to be focused and work together as a team. I believe APC is surmountable.”
Shelle added that being the largest local government in the state, Alimosho was very strategic and pledged that the leadership of the party will do everything possible to support its members in the local government to ensure victory come 2015.
Guest speaker at the event, former Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Mrs. Titi Oseni, said PDP in Lagos and the most states of the South-West had been plagued by factionalisation and poor internal democracy.
She said, “One thing that is painfully true about our party, in Lagos State in the past years, is the undeniable fact that we lack cohesion, discipline, unity and therefore at every past election worked at cross purposes. We have prosecuted our electoral battles in the past as people at war against itself. The seed of this problem, in itself, is sown by insincere leadership. We run leadership structure that is incompatible with our political nature. Imposition of candidates and ‘take it or leave it’ attitude are quite contradictory and self-defeating in a political organisation where freedom and democratic ethos are created.
Oseni added that Lagos electorate have become disillusioned and they want change from the APC government “that is anti-people; a government that is intolerant of the people on the low rung of socio-economic ladder; a government that is waging war against the poor, rather than poverty.”
She also advised the Lagos PDP to reconcile all factions and embrace openness, especially when choosing candidates.
Also speaking at the seminar, former Minister of Works, Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe, stressed the need for unity in Lagos PDP, stating that the move to reconcile with former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Bode George, would be in the interest of the party.
Ogunlewe added that there was need for the party to develop an effective house-to-house campaign strategy.
“Pick the candidate for the voters and not for the party. The question to ask is: who does the electorate love?” he said.
Earlier, the chairman of PDP in the local government area, Prince Ayodele Adelaja, welcomed chieftains of the party and hundreds of party loyalists who had gathered for the event.

Health / Re: Early Warning Signs Of Cancer In Children by DonColz1(m): 5:26am On Nov 22, 2013
Lymphoma
It starts in certain cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. These cancers affect lymph nodes and other lymph tissues, like the tonsils or thymus. They can also affect the bone marrow and other organs, and can cause different symptoms depending on where the cancer is growing.
Symptoms:
•Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin, unexplained weight loss, fever, sweats and weakness.

Health / Early Warning Signs Of Cancer In Children by DonColz1(m): 5:24am On Nov 22, 2013
Did you know that cancer is no respecter of even children? It is not only adults that suffer this horrible disease.
A recent study by scientists at the Roswell Parks Cancer Institute, United States of America, shows that it is the second leading cause of death in children younger than 15 after accidents in developed countries.
It is often detected late and misdiagnosed because when care givers, health care professionals and parents see its signs and symptoms in these children, they think it is a growth or phase that the children will outgrow.
But this is often not the case; nobody outgrows cancer growth. Rather, it should be taken out as soon as it is detected.
Head, Paediatric/ Oncology Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Prof . Adebola Akinsule says children develop cancer but if detected and treated early, they have 80 per cent chance of surviving it than adults.
Akinsuile, who spoke at an awareness programme organised by Help to Heal /Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation, in collaboration with Golden Tulip Hotels in Lagos on Thursday, notes that even though its curable, many Nigerian children die from it due to various challenges.
One of them is late detection and misdiagnosis. According to paediatric oncologist, many children have died of various cancers because of lack of knowledge on the part of the parents and the caregivers like nurses and doctors.
He says because the nature and type of cancers that develop in children are different from those that develop in adults, they are not easy to spot.
Akinsuile adds that cancers in children are hard to recognise because its symptoms mimic common illnesses like malaria, bumps and bruises which can mask the early warning signs.
He states, “Cancer in children is not as a result of the lifestyle or environmental risk factors like smoking, pollution and drinking. Instead, it’s usually the result of DNA changes in cells that take place very early in life even from the womb. This is difficult for many to accept.
“Cancer can happen to anybody even in babies. When its symptoms start, most mothers think it is malaria or measles, it is until they see the right doctor that they can know that it is cancer,” the expert stresses.
He pleads with parents to stop self medication on their children and take then to see a doctor or specialist any time they notice an usual growth or when they fall ill frequently.
Akinsuile notes, “It is parents that can help us fight cancer in children because they are the first to see it. They are the ones that will bring the child to the hospital; children don’t come to see the doctors on their own.
“Don’t be scared to take your child to a doctor if you notice that he/she has an unusual growth in any part of the body. It could be cancerous and if we need to remove it early. Today, up to 70 per cent of all cases of cancer in children can be cured, you cannot say that for adults. It is not a verdict that your child will die.”
To shed more light on cancer in children and to encourage early detection, experts on kidshealth.comtake a closer look at the top five cancers found in children and the warning signs .
L eukemia
Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow. It is the most common childhood cancer and accounts for about 34 per cent of all cancers in children. All cases occur between the ages of two and four and is more common in males than females.
Symptoms– Leukemia starts with bone and joint pain, fatigue, weakness, bleeding, fever and weight loss.
Brain Tumours and other nervous system tumours make up about 27 per cent of childhood cancers. Most brain tumours in children start in the lower parts of the brain, such as the cerebellum or brain stem. Although brain tumours are typically different in children as opposed to adults, many of the symptoms remain same. They include headache, dizziness, balance problems, vision, hearing or speech problems and frequent vomiting
Neuroblastoma
It arises from immature nerve cells in infants and young children. Primarily found in children younger than five, this disease often begins in the adrenal glands and makes up seven per cent of childhood cancers in the US. It’s more common in males than females, and only one to two per cent of children with this disease have a family history of it.
Symptoms:
Impaired ability to walk and changes in eyes (bulging, dark circles, droopy eyelids).Pain in various locations of the body and diarrhoea and high blood pressure
Wilms Tumour
It starts in the kidneys and is the most common type of paediatric kidney cancer. Wilms tumours usually only form in one kidney, but sometimes both – only in small cases – and accounts for about five per cent of all paediatric cancers. This disease is typically found in very young children – three to four years old – and is not common in children over six. There are approximately 5000 new cases and about 9 out of 10 children are cured.
Symptoms:
Swelling or lump in the belly, fever, pain, nausea and poor appetite.
Education / Strike: UNILAG Denies Pulling Out Of ASUU, Suspends 2nd Semester Exams by DonColz1(m): 1:07pm On Nov 21, 2013
The University of Lagos has denied that it has pulled out on the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The strike begun on July 1st, due to the inability of the Federal Government to execute an agreement it reached with ASUU in 2009.
According to earlier reports, UNILAG allegedly fixed a new date for its postponed 2nd semester examination regardless of the ongoing strike.
Our correspondent gathered that the strike started a few days to UNILAG’s second semester examinations.
The report, our correspondent learnt, was convincing because UNILAG was part the universities that voted in favour of the suspension of the five-month-old strike.
The speculation has it that UNILAG would commence its outstanding examination for all students before the Christmas break.
“The proposed exam as reported will be starting on the 9th of December and end on the 24th of December. We want to advise all students of the UNILAG to check it out to confirm,” an unconfirmed report had earlier said.
Apart from the speculation on UNILAG, some universities have reportedly started pulling out of ASUU strike.
Specifically, Adamawa University has pulled-out. Adamawa branch of ASUU, was said to have confronted ASUU national body without due process.
However, a top management officer in UNILAG said the university does not have any plan to pull out of ASUU.
The source said: “We are not pulling out. That is not possible. UNILAG is one of the strongest branches of ASUU and we will not disappoint. We have plans on ground to write the second semester exam, but that is after the strike might have been called off.”
When our correspondent visited the university, there was no sign that examinations will commence soon.
It was observed that dust and cob-webs have taken over most of the classes.

Politics / INEC On Anambra Poll: Only Courts Can Cancel Entire Election by DonColz1(m): 6:46am On Nov 19, 2013
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday said only the courts could order total cancellation of any election conducted by it.

The commission was reacting to the calls by the All Progressives Congress, Labour Party and their candidates for a total cancellation of the controversial governorship election in Anambra State on Saturday.

It said since the Chief Returning Officer, Prof. James Epoke, had announced most of the results, INEC had no power to do anything contrary.

“By law, those results are now beyond the purview of INEC to invalidate. Only the courts have that power now to do so,” Mr. Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, told The PUNCH in Abuja.

Idowu added that with the inclusive nature of the election as declared by Onukogu, all that “the commission can do is to conduct a supplementary election so that the CRO can make a return.”

He explained that INEC was “ awaiting the return of field officers, who went for the election so that every report obtained , especially concerning logistical issues, could be painstakingly scrutinised.”

It is after this, he said, that Jega and his national commissioners would meet to fix a date for the supplementary election.

The APC candidate, Chris Ngige; his PDP and LP counterparts, Tony Nwoye and Mr. Ifeanyi Uba, had on Sunday jointly called for a total cancellation of the poll.

They told INEC to conduct a fresh election before the March, 2014 handover date by the incumbent Governor, Peter Obi.

Epoke had in Awka on Monday morning that the election was declared inconclusive because it did not meet certain requirements of the Electoral Act.

He said that the Act required that for a winner to be declared in an election, the difference in the total voting population of the areas where the exercise was cancelled should be less than the difference between the votes scored by the candidate with the highest votes and the votes of the candidate with the second highest votes.

He said in the case of Anambra State, the total voting population of the areas in which election was cancelled was 113,113.

The figure, according to him, is higher than the 79,754 difference between the leading candidate’s votes and the second highest candidate’s votes.

With this, the CRO said, INEC had no choice but to declare the election inconclusive.

Epoke added, “The rule guiding this election is that for a winner to emerge, he must have majority of votes cast and the required spread of 25 per cent of votes in two-thirds of the local government areas.

“We observed that due to many reasons, there were a lot of cancelled votes that made it difficult for a winner to emerge.”

The CRO said the winner of the election would be only be declared after election had been conducted in the areas where the exercise was cancelled.

He also explained that election was cancelled in some polling units because of snatching of ballot materials; delivering of coded ballot materials to wrong collation centres and the non-arrival of election materials at polling units.

In the election result received and released by INEC, Chief Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance led with 174,710 votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Mr. Tony Nwoye, was second with 94,956 votes while the All Progressives Congress candidate, Dr. Chris Ngige, was third with 92,300 votes.

The Labour Party candidate, Ifeanyi Ubah, came fourth with 37,446 votes and the Progressives Peoples Alliance candidate, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, was fifth with 5,056 votes.

The total valid votes cast in the election were 413,005.

INEC announced that the supplementary election would take place in 15 local government areas, where 113,113 voters were denied the right to vote because election was cancelled in their polling units.

Most of the cancelled polling units(160) are in Idemilli North LGA where 89,997 voters were disenfranchised.

Also affected are Idemili South with one polling unit and 636 voters ; Ekwusigo, three polling units with 884 voters; Ayamelum, three polling units with 1,247 voters; Anambra East, one polling unit with 250 voters; Anambra West, six polling units with 2,000 voters; Anaocha, one polling unit with 276 voters ; and Awka North, two polling units with 1,366 voters.

The rest are Awka South, one polling unit with 249 voters; Nnewi South, two polling units with 376 voters ; Onitsha North, one polling unit with 484 voters; Onitsha South, 17 polling units with 12,279 voters ; Orumba North, four polling units with 588 voters; and Oyi four polling units with 1,202 voters.

The failure of INEC to fix a date for the supplementary election created some confusion especially among the poll monitors and journalists.

Many waited till Monday afternoon before moving out of their hotel rooms when it became obvious to them that INEC had not decided on a date for the supplementary poll.

On Monday evening, the riot policemen deployed in INEC office in Awka were also seen moving out after some ceremonies.

Politics / Nigeria’s Population To Exceed 440 Million In 2050 by DonColz1(m): 1:52am On Nov 17, 2013
The population of Nigeria has been projected to be 440.4 million by mid-2050 and 239.9 million by mid-2025.
The Population Reference Bureau made these projections in its recently released 2013 World Population Data Sheet, which put the country’s population, as of the end of June this year, at 173.6 million.
SUNDAY PUNCHanalysis showed that in 2050, Nigeria will be the third most populous country in the world, just behind India and China, who will have populations of 1.65 billion and 1.31 billion respectively.
This means that over the period of 37 years, Nigeria’s population figures will overtake those of the United States of America, which will be 399.8 million in 2050; Brazil, which will be 227.5 million; Pakistan, which will be 363.2 million; and Indonesia, which will be 366.2 million.
The statistics showed that Nigeria’s mid-2013 population was 52. 4 per cent of West Africa’s 331 million population and 15.8 per cent of Africa’s population of 1.1 billion.
According to the PRB population data sheet, children, aged 15 and below, make up 44 per cent of Nigeria’s population, while elders, aged 65 and above, constitute only three per cent.
It also noted that about 50 per cent of the country’s population reside in urban areas and put the percentage of the population that use improved sanitation at 33 per cent for urban areas and 28 per cent for rural areas.
Nigeria’s birth rate was put at 42 births per 1000 population, while its death rate was put at 13 deaths per 1000 population. Life expectancy stood at 51 for males and 52 for females.
On the percentage share of income, the data sheet showed that Nigeria’s poorest 20 per cent population earn six per cent the nation’s income, while the wealthiest 20 per cent earn 46 per cent of the nation’s income.
The statistics showed that Tokyo remains the most populous city in the world with a population of 37.2 million. It is followed by Delhi with 22.7 million, Mexico City with 20.5 million, New York 20.4 million, Shanghai 20.2 million, Sao Paulo 19.9 million, Mumbai 19.7 million and Beijing 15.6 million.
The population of Lagos was put at 11.2 million, that of Cairo 11.1 million; Paris 10.6 million; and London 9.0 million.
The PRB population clock showed that the world population is about 7.1 billion, with 1.24 billion in more developed countries and 5.89 billion in less developed countries.
It also showed that at least 271 babies are born globally per minute; 390, 778 babies per day; and 142, 634, 000 babies per year.
Also, at least 106 persons die globally per minute; 153, 351 persons per day; and 55, 973, 000 persons per year.
According to a press statement by PRB, Africa’s population is expected to more than double, rising from 1.1 billion today to at least 2.4 billion by 2050.
The President and Chief Executive Officer of PRB, Wendy Baldwin, was quoted as saying, “Nearly all of that growth will be in the 51 countries of sub-Saharan Africa, the region’s poorest,” adding that “rapid population growth makes it difficult for economies to create enough jobs to lift large numbers of people out of poverty.”

Politics / Stella Oduah To Appear Before Senate Today. by DonColz1(m): 2:21am On Nov 14, 2013
The Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, is scheduled to appear before the senate on Thursday (today) to brief the upper legislative chamber about the state of the aviation industry, particularly the unfortunate crash involving the Associated Airlines flight on October 3.
Oduah was scheduled to appear before the senators last week Thursday but was shifted because Senate President David Mark was not available and he had requested to personally preside over the probe session.
It will be recalled that Oduah could not also appear before the Senate last week Wednesday during plenary because she had sought a last minute permission from the Senators to attend the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.
Oduah had been summoned by the upper legislative chamber to explain her roles in the ill-fated plane that crashed while conveying the remains of former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, from Lagos to Akure.
Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that the senators might restrict their questions to the general state of the aviation industry and how to avoid future plane crashes.
A source in the Senate Committee on Aviation told our correspondent that since the House of Representatives were already probing the minister on the controversial purchase of the N255m bullet proof cars, asking questions on the same issue would not make much sense.
“Since a senate committee is already doing investigation on the bullet proof cars allegedly bought for Oduah, I think the senate will only concentrate on the frequent air crashes and what was being done to curtail its reoccurrence,” the source said.
Oduah has been on the firing line of public rage since it was revealed that the cash-strapped National Civil Aviation Authority was forced to buy two BMW armoured cars for the minister at a whooping cost of N255m.
