Celebrities / Singer, Akon, Launches “solar Academy” In Africa by drsolob2(m): 9:30am On May 27, 2015
Senegalese-American musician, Akon, on Tuesday launched a Solar Academy, aimed at giving African engineers and
entrepreneurs the skills needed to
develop solar power.
The star previously launched the Akon Lighting Africa initiative aimed at bringing electricity to some 600 million Africans.
“We have the sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities,” said Samba Baithily, who founded Akon Lighting Africa with Akon and Thione Niang. “We now need to consolidate African expertise.
The academy will aim to teach
people how to install and maintain solar-powered electricity systems as well as micro-grids, which are really
taking off in rural Africa.”
The Solar Academy, according to
a statement by the group investing in solar power for the future, could help to implant a viable platform to power homes that lacked electricity.
The institution is scheduled to open this summer in Bamako, Mali’s capital. European experts will help to supply training equipment and programmes.
Akon is the performing name of
the Senegalese-American singer, Aliaune Thiam, whose 2004 debut
album, Trouble, spawned the hit singles, Locked Up and Lonely.
He is the son of jazz percussionist, Mor Thiam.
Akon spent his childhood in the U.S.

Politics / Don’t Corrupt Our Officers, Police IG Begs Nigerians by drsolob2(m): 9:17am On May 27, 2015
The Inspector-General of Police,
Solomon Arase, on Tuesday
appealed to the public not to
corrupt personnel of the police by
giving them bribe.
Mr. Arase made the appeal while
fielding questions from
journalists during a meeting with
senior officers on the issue of
whether or not, bail was free.
“We have a zero tolerance for
payment of money to free suspect.
I am appealing to members of the
public, not to corrupt my men; It
takes two to tango.
“If they ask you for bribe and you
refuse to give, and you have
avenues where your grievances
can be ventilated, I do not see any
reason why you should give them
bribe.
“The Commissioner of Police is
there; the Area Commander is
there; the DPO is there; and the
technical platform (to report
corrupt policemen) is there.
“We have opened ourselves to
public accountability. So, you
cannot now say the whole
problem should be blamed on the
police force’’, he said.
Earlier, the I-G had announced
that two suspected kingpins
responsible for the spate of the
kidnappings in Ekiti state, had
been arrested on Tuesday
morning.
He also said that cultists
operating in Edo State had been
dislodged, with the arrest and
transfer to Abuja, of 11 suspects
believed to be their leaders in the
state.
Mr. Arase, however, described
Kogi, Rivers and Benue as
problematic states in terms of
crime, and promised to deploy
personnel to those states in 48
hours to tackle the problem.
He directed Commissioners of
Police to report threats to security
in their respective states to the Force
Headquarters for intervention.
He threatened to sanction any commissioner
who allowed security situation to get out of
hand and caused embarrassment to the nation
before reporting it for intervention.
Mr. Arase said the meeting was called to
assess the success of special operations
embarked upon by the police in Edo and Ekiti
states in the last two weeks.
The I-G also said the police would map out
strategies to ensure hitch-free inauguration of
elected leaders at both the federal and state
levels.

Politics / Don’t Dump National Conference Report, Jonathan Urges Buhari by drsolob2(m): 6:12am On May 27, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan has
urged the incoming Muhammadu
Buhari-led government not to
discard the report of the 2014
National Conference, which he
initiated steps to implement
before losing the recent election.
The president tasked Mr. Buhari
to appreciate the good
contributions made by Nigerians
towards nation-building
irrespective of political party or
creed.
The president spoke shortly after
being decorated with the “Peace-
Loving Global Citizen” Award by
the Universal Peace Forum led by
lawyer, Mike Ozehkome, at the
Presidential Villa, Tuesday.
He expressed hope that the
incoming administration would
take the time to appreciate the
contributions of Nigerians from
every part of the country in the
efforts to build a greater nation.
The president enjoined Nigerians
to strengthen the weak cleavages
which abound in the country and
not to exploit them for negative
reasons.
He said everyone must be ready
to make sacrifices.
“We have our challenges, of
course,” he said. “We had a
national conference; the idea of
the conference is to look at these
weak cleavages we have in this
country.
“And we just finished that
conference and we are thinking
about how to implement it so that
Nigeria will become more
stronger and united nation. I
cannot be a party to the
disintegration of the country.
“But I’m quite pleased with what
has happened. We have a country;
our country will be more united. I
believe and do pray that the
incoming government should
appreciate the contributions of everybody and
see how we run Nigeria as a country that
belongs to everybody, for all citizens;
irrespective of political persuasion or creed;
so that is what I stand for.”
Accepting his latest award, Mr. Jonathan said
he would not be party to the disintegration of
Nigeria, which was one of the reasons he
conceded defeat after the presidential polls.
He said even if he ruled Nigeria for the next
25 years, he would not be at peace with
himself if it led to the deaths of Nigerians.
“I took that decision (to concede to Buhari)
because I told those around me that no matter
the ambition, the nation comes first,” he said.
He told the public that his Vice-President,
Namadi Sambo, and the Peoples Democratic
Party equally deserved the encomiums poured
on him following his historic telephone call to
congratulate Mr. Buhari after the March 28
poll.
In his remarks, Mr. Ozekhome praised Mr.
Jonathan’s gesture, which he said had
positively put Nigeria on the global map.
“Given your uncommon, almost unnatural
gesture of conceding victory to your
opponent, we want you to go back to Otuoke a
very proud man,” he said.
“You are the greatest democrat we have ever
had in this country. History will be fair to
you.”
He, however, warned the outgoing president
that he would have little rest after office since
he would be invited to several world fora to
lend his experience and touch to democracy.
Describing the president as a global peace
ambassador, Mr. Ozekhome announced the
nomination of Mr. Jonathan to the board of
the UPF in place of former head of state,
Ernest Shonekan, who stepped down recently.
Mr. Ozekhome also invited Mr. Jonathan to an
international conference of the Forum holding
in Seoul, South Korea in August.
