Science/Technology / Massive Ocean Discovered Towards The Earths Core by dtito(m): 1:31pm On Sep 03, 2014
A reservoir of water three times the volume of all the oceans has been discovered deep beneath the Earth’s surface. The finding may explain where Earth’s seas came from, and lend some interesting evidence to the Hollow Earth Theory.

The water is hidden inside a blue rock called ringwoodite that lies 700 kilometres underground in the mantle, the layer of hot rock between Earth’s surface and its core.  The huge size of the reservoir throws new light on the origin of Earth’s water. Many geologists think water arrived in comets as they struck the planet, but the new discovery supports an alternative idea that the oceans gradually oozed out of the interior of the early Earth.

“It’s good evidence the Earth’s water came from within,” says Steven Jacobsen of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The hidden water could also act as a buffer for the oceans on the surface, explaining why they have stayed the same size for millions of years.

Jacobsen’s team used 2000 seismometers to study the seismic waves generated by more than 500 earthquakes. These waves move throughout Earth’s interior, including the core, and can be detected at the surface. “They make the Earth ring like a bell for days afterwards,” says Jacobsen.

By measuring the speed of the waves at different depths, the team could figure out which types of rocks the waves were passing through. The water layer revealed itself because the waves slowed down, as it takes them longer to get through soggy rock than dry rock.

Jacobsen worked out in advance what would happen to the waves if water-containing ringwoodite was present. He grew ringwoodite in his lab, and exposed samples of it to massive pressures and temperatures matching those at 700 kilometres down.

Sure enough, they found signs of wet ringwoodite in the transition zone 700 kilometres down, which divides the upper and lower regions of the mantle. At that depth, the pressures and temperatures are just right to squeeze the water out of the ringwoodite. “It’s rock with water along the boundaries between the grains, almost as if they’re sweating,” says Jacobsen.

Jacobsen’s finding supports a recent study by Graham Pearson of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Pearson studied a diamond from the transition zone that had been carried to the surface in a volcano, and found that it contained water-bearing ringwoodite, the first strong evidence that there was lots of water in the transition zone (Nature, doi.org/s6h).

“Since our initial report of hydrous ringwoodite, we’ve found another ringwoodite crystal, also containing water, so the evidence is now very strong,” says Pearson.

So far, Jacobsen only has evidence that the watery rock sits beneath the US. He now wants to find out if it wraps around the entire planet.

“We should be grateful for this deep reservoir,” says Jacobsen. “If it wasn’t there, it would be on the surface of the Earth, and mountain tops would be the only land poking out.”

Education / After 400 Years,mathematicians Find A New Class Of Solid Shapes. by dtito(m): 4:18pm On Sep 02, 2014
By Akshat Rathi, The Conversation

The work of the Greek polymath Plato has kept millions of people busy for millennia. A few among them have been mathematicians who have obsessed about Platonic solids, a class of geometric forms that are highly regular and are commonly found in nature.

Since Plato’s work, two other classes of regular convex polyhedra, as the collective of these shapes are called, have been found: Archimedian solids and Kepler solids. Nearly 400 years after the last class was described, researchers claim that they may have now invented a new, fourth class, which they call Goldberg polyhedra. Also, they believe that their rules show that an infinite number of such classes could exist.

Platonic love for geometry

Regular convex polyhedra need to have certain characteristics. First, each of the sides of the polyhedra needs to be of the same length. Second, the shape must be completely solid: that is, it must have a well-defined inside and outside that is separated by the shape itself. Third, any point on a line that connects two points in a shape must never fall outside the shape.

Platonic solids, the first class of such shapes, are well known. They consist of five different shapes: tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. They have four, six, eight, twelve and twenty faces, respectively.

These highly regular structures are commonly found in nature. For instance, the carbon atoms in a diamond are arranged in a tetrahedral shape. Common salt and fool’s gold (iron sulfide) form cubic crystals, and calcium fluoride forms octahedral crystals.

The new discovery comes from researchers who were inspired by finding such interesting polyhedra in their own work that involved the human eye. Stan Schein at the University of California in Los Angeles was studying the retina of the eye when he became interested in the structure of protein called clathrin. Clathrin is involved in moving resources inside and outside cells, and in that process it forms only a handful number of shapes. These shapes intrigued Schein, who ended up coming up with a mathematical explanation for the phenomenon.

During this work, Schein came across the work of 20th century mathematician Michael Goldberg who described a set of new shapes, which have been named after him, as Goldberg polyhedra. The easiest Goldberg polyhedron to imagine looks like a blown-up football, as the shape is made of many pentagons and hexagons connected to each other in a symmetrical manner (see image to the left).

However, Schein believes that Goldberg’s shapes – or cages, as geometers call them – are not polyhedra. “It may be confusing because Goldberg called them polyhedra, a perfectly sensible name to a graph theorist, but to a geometer, polyhedra require planar faces,” Schein said.

Instead, in a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Schein and his colleague James Gayed have described that a fourth class of convex polyhedra, which given Goldberg’s influence they want to call Goldberg polyhedra, even at the cost of confusing others.

A crude way to describe Schein and Gayed’s work, according to David Craven at the University of Birmingham, “is to take a cube and blow it up like a balloon” – which would make its faces bulge (see image to the right). The point at which the new shapes breaks the third rule – which is, any point on a line that connects two points in that shape falls outside the shape – is what Schein and Gayed care about most.

Craven said, “There are two problems: the bulging of the faces, whether it creates a shape like a saddle, and how you turn those bulging faces into multi-faceted shapes. The first is relatively easy to solve. The second is the main problem. Here one can draw hexagons on the side of the bulge, but these hexagons won’t be flat. The question is whether you can push and pull all these hexagons around to make each and everyone of them flat.”

During the imagined bulging process, even one that involves replacing the bulge with multiple hexagons, as Craven points out, there will be formation of internal angles. These angles formed between lines of the same faces – referred to as dihedral angle discrepancies – means that, according to Schein and Gayed, the shape is no longer a polyhedron. Instead they claimed to have found a way of making those angles zero, which makes all the faces flat, and what is left is a true convex polyhedron (see image below).

Their rules, they claim, can be applied to develop other classes of convex polyhedra. These shapes will be with more and more faces, and in that sense there should be an infinite variety of them.

Such mathematical discoveries don’t have immediate applications, but often many are found. For example, dome-shaped buildings are never circular in shape. Instead they are built like half-cut Goldberg polyhedra, consisting of many regular shapes that give more strength to the structure than using round-shaped construction material.

However, there may be some immediate applications. The new rules create polyhedra that have structures similar to viruses or fullerenes, a carbon isotope. The fact that there has been no “cure” against influenza, or common flu, shows that stopping viruses is hard. But if we are able to describe the structure of a virus accurately, we get a step closer to finding a way of fighting them.

If nothing else, Schein’s work will invoke mathematicians to find other interesting geometric shapes, now that regular convex polyhedra may have been done with.

Family / U.k-based Mom Kills 3 Year Old Son & Hides Him In Suitcase by dtito(m): 12:09pm On Aug 26, 2014
A U.K-based mother killed her 3-year-old son and then hid his corpse in a suitcase. She was then sentenced to 11 years in jail.

The woman, Rosdeep Adekoya, reportedly beat her son, Mikaeel Kular repeatedly two days before he died, according to Mirror.

When she discovered her son laying lifeless on the floor of their Edinburgh home, she wrapped him up in a duvet cover, put him in a suitcase, and drove for many miles to find a place to hide the body. She then hid it behind her her sister’s house in Woodland.

Adekoya then reported her son missing to police authorities. In response, authorities conducted a rigorous 2-day search operation.

During investigations, it was discovered that she had inflicted fatal injuries on her son because she was angry at him for not feeling very well after a trip to Nando’s restaurant.

An autopsy revealed the cause of his death to be “blunt force abdominal trauma.”  Kularis said to have sustained over 40 separate injuries on his body.

Investigations also revealed that Adekoya’s most recent internet searches before her son’s death were: “I find it hard to love my son”, “Why am I so aggressive with my son” and “Get rid of bruises”.

The 34-year-old mom was initially charged with murder; however, the charge was reduced to “culpable homicide,” which she is serving 11 years for.

American Missionaries Cured of Ebola Infections; Brantly: 'Today Is A Miraculous Day'

“After a rigorous and successful course of treatment and testing, the Emory Healthcare team has determined that both patients have recovered from the Ebola virus and can return to their families and community without concern for spreading this infection to others,” said Bruce Ribner, MD, director of Emory’s Infectious Disease Unit, in a statement released by the hospital.

Dr. Ribner began the press conference with a brief statement about the patients.

“What we learned in caring for them will help advance the world’s understand of how to treat Ebola virus infections and improve survival,” said Dr. Ribner. “Emory’s goal is: Heal and advance knowledge.”

Twice during the questions and answers, Ribner remarked that it was a privilege for Emory University Hospital to care for Dr. Brantly and Ms. Writebol.

Dr. Kent Brantly, looking fit in a blue, Samaritan’s Purse oxford shirt, and surrounded by beaming Emory staff, began his statement, “Today is a miraculous day. I’m thrilled to be alive, to be well, and to be reunited with my family.”

Brantly said that after taking some time away and reconnecting with his family, he’ll be ready to share his thoughts on the experience in greater detail publicly. The medical missionary took no questions but did allow many photos to be taken after his completing his statement.

Many of the questions from the press pool pertained to whether Writebol or Brantly were at all contagious. Ribner noted that the patients met the CDC and WHO criteria for no longer having the disease: The virus was no longer detectable in their blood and they have recovered from the symptoms of Ebola viral infection.
Religion / A Jewish Boycott(the Truth) by dtito(m): 7:52am On Aug 22, 2014
I think this applies not only to Hamas situation but also to other islamist like ISIS and Boko Haram.

A Jewish Boycott

Some time ago, Iran's Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged the Muslim World to boycott anything and everything that originates with the Jewish people.

In response, Meyer M. Treinkman, a pharmacist, out of the kindness of his heart, offered to assist them in their boycott as follows:

"Any Muslim who has Syphilis must not be cured by Salvarsan discovered by a Jew, Dr. Ehrlich. He should not even try to find out whether he has Syphilis, because the Wasserman Test is the discovery of a Jew. If a Muslim suspects that he has Gonorrhea, he must not seek diagnosis, because he will be using the method of a Jew named Neissner.

"A Muslim who has heart disease must not use Digitalis, a discovery by a Jew, Ludwig Traube.

Should he suffer with a toothache, he must not use Novocaine, a discovery of the Jews, Widal and Weil.

If a Muslim has Diabetes, he must not use Insulin, the result of research by Minkowsky, a Jew. If one has a headache, he must shun Pyramidon and Antypyrin, due to the Jews, Spiro and Ellege.

Muslims with convulsions must put up with them because it was a Jew, Oscar Leibreich, who proposed the use of Chloral Hydrate.

Arabs must do likewise with their psychic ailments because Freud, father of psychoanalysis, was a Jew.

Should a Muslim child get Diphtheria, he must refrain from the “Schick" reaction which was invented by the Jew, Bella Schick.

"Muslims should be ready to die in great numbers and must not permit treatment of ear and brain damage, work of Jewish Nobel Prize winner, Robert Baram.

They should continue to die or remain crippled by Infantile Paralysis because the discoverer of the anti-polio vaccine is a Jew, Jonas Salk.

"Muslims must refuse to use Streptomycin and continue to die of Tuberculosis because a Jew, Zalman Waxman, invented the wonder drug against this killing disease.

Muslim doctors must discard all discoveries and improvements by dermatologist Judas Sehn Benedict, or the lung specialist, Frawnkel, and of many other world renowned Jewish scientists and medical experts.

"In short, good and loyal Muslims properly and fittingly should remain afflicted with Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Heart Disease, Headaches, Typhus, Diabetes, Mental Disorders, Polio Convulsions and Tuberculosis and be proud to obey the Islamic boycott."

Oh, and by the way, don't call for a doctor on your cell phone because the cell phone was invented in Israel by a Jewish engineer.

Meanwhile I ask, what medical contributions to the world have the Muslims made?"

The Jews are NOT promoting brainwashing children in military training camps, teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths of Jews and other non-Muslims.

The Jews don't hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics, or blow themselves up in German restaurants.

There is NOT one single Jew who has destroyed a church.

There is NOT a single Jew who protests by killing people. The Jews don't traffic slaves, nor have leaders calling for Jihad and death to all the Infidels.

Perhaps the world's Muslims should consider investing more in standard education and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems.

Muslims must ask 'what can they do for humankind' before they demand that humankind respects them.

Regardless of your feelings about the crisis between Israel and the Palestinians and Arab neighbors, even if you believe there is more culpability on Israel 's part, the following two sentences really say it all:

'If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more violence. If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no more Israel."

Benjamin Netanyahu: General Eisenhower warned us. It is a matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect: 'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never happened'

Recently, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred.

It is not removed as yet. However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 65 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

This e-mail is intended to reach 400 million people. Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the World Trade Center'NEVER HAPPENED' because it offends some Muslim in the United States?

Health / Another Liberian Certified With Ebola Virus In Lagos by dtito(m): 1:48pm On Aug 21, 2014
…It’s not true –Lagos govt

Few weeks after a Liberian, Patrick Sawyer, brought the Ebola virus disease (EVD) to Nigeria, another Liberian with the deadly virus has been detected in Lagos.

This was disclosed yesterday morning by a Senior Registrar with Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, Dr Akindele Akintayo while speaking on a television programme in Lagos.

He said the Liberian has been kept at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Lagos. Dr Akintayo said, however that the hospital authorities were yet to confirm if the victim had a contact with the late Mr Sawyer or not.

Recall that the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu on Tuesday announced the death of Dr Ameyo Adadevoh, one of the doctors that treated the late Sawyer at First Consultant Hospital, Lagos. But, the Lagos State Government has denied that another Liberian with the Ebola virus had been discovered in Lagos.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, while addressing newsmen at Alausa, Ikeja, yesterday, debunked the story, saying no such development occurred. He also confirmed that five fresh suspected cases had come up, saying: “Till date, we have recorded 8 suspected cases, 5 of which came in yesterday, 12 confirmed on the whole, five have died. We are currently following up 213 contacts and 63 have completed the 2-day follow-up.”

The commissioner regretted the death of Dr Stella Adadevoh, the Senior Consultant/endocrinologist at First Consultant Hospital, who led the team that attended to and treated Nigeria’s first index case, Liberian Patrick Sawyer.

According to him, it was the late Adadevoh, “who took the initiative to intimate the ministry concerning the index case and substantially to her credit the moderate containment achieved is owed. She led the team who attended to the index case. Her doggedness and commitment to duty saw her personally reviewing the case even though the patient had earlier been seen by a doctor.

“No doubt, she and the other affected health workers are the heroes and heroines of the day.”

He also commiserated with the families, friends and co-workers of all affected persons.

Responding to concerns being raised about infected persons who had been discharged after recovering fully from the Ebola virus, Idris said: “I wish to reassure you that the discharge process was in line with the WHO international health regulations and they are still being followed up, “adding that there was no record of persons who had recovered from the virus attack and showed symptoms later.

Troubled former NBA basketball player Allen Iverson was seen begging for change outside of Lenox Mall in Atlanta. Several mall patrons reported a man with a disheveled appearance harassing them for change.

When security arrived, they were shocked to see it was none other than basketball legend Allen Iverson. Iverson was asked to leave the premises by mall security.

Jason Seaworth, who works security at the mall, says it was very difficult for him to ask Iverson to leave as he was one of his childhood heroes. “One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was asking my hero to leave the mall. It was very sad to see him in such a bad place. I really hope he gets his life together and somehow returns to prominence,” Seaworth stated.

Allen Iverson fell on hard times when his basketball career abruptly ended. Though the 76ers legend is currently bankrupt, he does have a $30 million trust with Reebok, which he cannot access until he is 55-years-old.

Over his NBA career, Iverson made over $154.5 million in salary. The 39-year-old also racked up quite a bit of income in endorsements, bringing his income to over $200 million.

Iverson blew through his money at an alarming rate on gaudy jewelry, expensive cars, and other frivolous purchases. In 2012, a Georgia judge garnished his wages to satisfy a $859,896.46 debt to a jeweler.

During his divorce proceedings in 2012, Iverson told an Atlanta judge, “I don’t even have money for a cheeseburger,” while turning his pockets inside out.

While in the middle of a financial bind, Iverson purchased an elaborate mansion, but lost the property to foreclosure less than a year later. It is believed that he is now homeless and bounces around from home to home.

Iverson has been working hard to get his life back on track. He hopes to one day re-join the 76ers with an office position.
