EPISODE 12 I crossed my mind that morning, I'm not going to talk about the incident its purely classified information. It took me a while to flag down a bus from my junction, getting a bus nowadays was like finding a needle in a haystack owing to the undying fuel scarcity that claimed a menace in our society today. Finally I found a bus and vigorously waved at it, you could spot the trace of smiles on my face and temporary relief. The bus came to a halt directly in front of me and the conductor alighted. "Bros where?" He said in a creaked voice. The odour that oozed out of his mouth was offensive enough to tame an angry lion. "Jodiah junction" I replied attempting to move my face away "150 enter with change" he said in an uneasy tone. "Ah.....ah oga 150?, that one too much na" I protested "guy na 150 you dey enter? Abi make I comot?". To avoid any further intake of odouriferous smell I decided to end the argument and enter the bus before this guy melt my face with his mouth. I couldn't afford to take in that much kind of odour this morning and end up not entering the bus. "This guys mouth should be employed for pest control" I thought to myself. The skies looked very heavy and threatened to release a heavy pour down, on getting to school I maintained my eye level up front to avoid any visual contact with anybody that may have heard my story. As I walked through hallways I could feel the stares of gossips and side talks from all corners. I headed straight for the assembly ground without further resent. The dexterity at which students maintained decorum at the early morning general assembly was terrific. It was one of the most organized moments during school hours. Everybody stood like soldiers, perfectly still and focused on who ever was addressing them. Other teachers took the role of inspection as they paraded the grounds with their long canes ready to devour any student found talking or disturbing of any sort. These teachers would also check for dirty fingernails, illegal hair styles, wrong pairs of shoes, skinny trousers, low waist or any indecent attire of any sort. There he was again- Mr Nnamdi the alpha predator yet searching for another prey to start his day with. He approached the SS2 line with his usual deadly slow walk, with his red bulging eyes roving from side to side making sure no flaw passed him by. He always had his cane behind him as he walked. Bulls-eye.; he finally found his prey, the all famous obi. Obi was right behind me and I noticed he hasn't been still since he arrived. As soon as he spotted Mr Nnamdi he started chewing his finger nails vigorously like a hungry dog that had been starved for days. His attempt to successfully ravage his nails before anyone could spot him was obviously a failure as he was busted by the alpha predator. "What is the meaning of this" Mr Nnamdi yelled pointing to obi's half way massacred fingers. Obi's fingers were long and very dirty looking brownish. "Erm......erm.....sir" obi stammered. "Shut up and stretch out your hands, and I need the back of your hand not the palm" Mr Nnamdi ordered. This scene took place right behind me, my vision was still locked on the principal who was trying to address us. Poor obi stretched out his hands and five whooping lashes landed on his upper limbs leaving him screaming like a goat being slaughtered. The weight of the lashes had so much gravity, I could swear I felt obi's pain. For a moment this scene was a centre of attraction as other students starred in fright towards the wrath of Mr Nnamdi. He was never to be taken lightly. As Mr Nnamdi walked past me I could feel his heavy breath owing to his early morning exercise he just finished on obi. He stopped and gave me a lethal grin showing his 'snuff-infested-yellow' teeth. As he scanned me meticulously from head-to-toe. "I heard what happened to your father" Mr Nnamdi said "accept my sympathy" he added. His presence was already beginning to disgust me as I couldn't even bear to look at his horrifying face. I maintained my gaze on the principal pretending I couldn't hear him. When he was done scanning me and couldn't find any flaws he continued with the person ahead of me. I immediately gave a sign of relief as I escaped yet another attack of Mr Nnamdi by a hairs breath. "You see this is a school not an agbero rendezvous point" the principal started as he addressed the enormous crowd. The name of our principal was Mr thomas Ogundele. He was about 5 foot 7 inches tall, dark, fat and grumpy. Back then in junior secondary school we used to call him cannon ball because he looked just like an alien from ben 10 cartoon. He had a very pot belly that made him look awkward and funny whenever he dressed in suits or corporate wears. He had been the schools principal for more than ten years now so we were more than used to his long boring talks on assembly grounds. He always ended his talk with the popular saying "THE BIRD WHO SITS ON A BRANCH IS NOT SCARED OF THE BRANCH BREAKING BECAUSE HE RELIES ON HIS WINGS NOT THE BRANCH" he said this everyday and it got stuck in our heads to the extent that we subconsciously mouth it with him whenever he says it. The whole moral lesson of the whole saying which he would relate to our present situation was that we should rely on our brains during exam and not our friends. Immediately following the principals talk was the matching song which drove us into our classrooms. Getting to the classrooms the stares got worse and I was beginning to feel uncomfortable. No one had the courage to walk up to me and ask me about the whole situation. Well no one except Jane. Jane walked up to me with her mini gang that escorted her wherever she went. She was like their queen bee. I brought out a rag from my bag and carefully cleaned off the dust that sat comfortably and occupied my desk since the owner wasn't around. "David" jane yelled. I pretended like I didn't hear her and continued cleaning my seat. "Are you deaf?, can't you hear me call you?" She yelled again in response to my silence "WHAT" I screamed in anger looking visibly tensed. She just starred at me in shock surprised at my response. I sat on my seat and adjusted uneasily. I returned my gaze back to jane and tried to regain tranquility. "Look jane just leave me alone ok?" I uttered in a really calm voice. She looked at me with disgust and hissed "you should be happy I came to talk to your sorry ass. Am sure its your stupidity that killed your father, you fool. You mother is the next in line IDIOT" she lamented. "Are you done?" I asked almost immediately. It was evident that her abuses didn't get to me at all. She was going to arrive no where with this, she realized this and it really hurt her. She gazed at me in a deadly manner and walked out. I turned my gaze to the rest of the class who were viewing us in 3D. I had eye contact with folake and she nodded negatively. I slipped out a book from my bag to me busy till the first tutor for the day kicked off. ABOUT 3 HOURS LATER This far into the day about twenty persons teachers inclusive had summoned courage to walk up to me after the scene this morning. Most of them begged me to accept their sympathy and it got me wondering what I'll do with a bunch of sympathy. If anyone in history ever needed sympathy I think he would be more than satisfied if it came from one person. Some others took it to their own volition to narrate the false rumors they heard about my fathers death. I heard totally weird and stupid stuff like it was my mom who poisoned him, or he died in his sleep. Some even said he left and didn't return so we assumed him dead. I was totally bolted from the blue when a girl walked up to me and told me she heard it was my mother who died. It only proved me right that rumors would be too much for me to bear. The bell for break time went off and I instantly took off. I was fed up with all these people trying their best to remind me of the tragedy I have tried to put away for so long. I just needed a breakaway. I dashed out of the school premises and the only thing I needed right now was a quiet place to clear my head. I thought of going to pick my siblings and going home but it was just past noon and their school wouldn't have closed. I saw an uncompleted building along the road, just a street away from my school and I decided to camp there for a couple of hours before I move home. The place seemed quiet and cool just what I needed. "Oya divide the sher-kpen" a creaky voice demanded. The voice seemed to be coming from within the building. I decided to feed my curious mind and moved towards the direction of the voice. As I moved I noticed there were up to five different people having a meeting. I reduced my pace and moved stealthily to avoid any noises. When I finally got close enough I banked at a corner and peeped through a hole to find out the identity of the people who possessed such scary voices. "AAHH" I gasped out of fear. They were seven thick black men wearing black singlets with camouflage shorts, each tied a different colour of rag on their head "cultist" I thought to myself. Each of them held a lethal weapon. Guns and loads of cash were scattered every where on the floor. The site was so gory and I only saw these in the movies, my thought was interrupted by the sound of a corked gun behind me. The gun was carefully placed on my neck and every single part of my body felt the effect of the cold steel in contact with my skin. "Don't move" the unknown voice ordered. End of episode 12 Stay tuned for 13 |
