Nairaland / General / Re: The "basterdization" Of NIGERIAN Language. (Title Edited) by ElRazur: 1:39pm On Dec 24, 2010
Title edited.

Here is a language that is spoken by a handful of people and what the people are doing to stop it from going into extinction.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2010/12/cherokee-apple.html

But the language has been largely lost among the younger generation -- only about 8,000 Cherokee speakers remain out of the tribe's 290,000 members, and most of them are 50 or older, Cherokee Chief Chad Smith told the AP.

I wonder if time will catch up with ours.

Actually, the others are more of Govt personel so there is no ground for comparison.

What is this guy talking about?

So it is okay to leak information about Govt personel [sic] but not about the guy who is hell bent on revealing information about others? Do you ever think about what you post at times, and try to engage logic a little bit?

These government officials are humans and the leaks made jeopardises their well being, even though they may be working for America.

This is why it was a 'punitive' expedition. It was perhaps justifiably retaliatory:
@ Topic

Well, might is always right. Thats the world we live in, and this fact is evident in our daily dealings as human beings as well as in the dealings between states in the comity of nations. There is no point whining about how the British 'stole' a Bini mask in the 17th century. We have more pressing issues to worry about. Heck, I am dead sure that the darn mask would have long decayed and disappeared had it remained in Nigeria. Is there ay single item in any of Nigeria's museums (relic houses more like) that dates back to the 17th Century? (other than Murtala's bullet-ridden Benz 200 and a few shillings and Biafra notes). Do we even have an original recorded history dating back to the 17th Century (other than that authored by British and other foreign sources)?

As usual we like to make a jamboree out of chasing rats when our house is on fire. Lets leave the oyinbos to bask in their taste for the exotic. Afterall the so-called masks would have been of much less value to the average Nigerian than a sumptuous plate of food. Lets deal with the basics first - the outrageous level of hunger, poverty and infrastructural decay - and leave the developed West to worry about masks, paintings and carvings.

No. We must all sign the petition grin
Politics / Re: Nigerian EX- Senator Spotted In A Night Club; Good Or Bad by ElRazur: 3:59pm On Dec 22, 2010
What sort of foolisssshhhh thread and question is this?

So a Senate should not have a life, simply because she is a senate and happens to be a female? Will this be okay, if she was a male senate? What a joke.

EDIT
So she was a former senate?

What is the point of this thread again?

Lol. Now you know how it is when your mothers are in the house too. We cant scream on top of our voices when we reach there.

Lol.

I just keep imagining things this guy can't do because his personal space is invaded.  .  . For 5 freaking years!

He can't wear pata alone in his house and walk around when it is hot. God knows I do this alot.

He can't walk around unclothed.

When me and gf are in the mood, we can sleep with each other on the kitchen floor, corridor or any where and at any time. Kai, this guy would have to wait till night time. How is this helping their relationship?

If the mum cook rubbish food, one have to pretend it is nice and just eat it up. smh.

The guy cannot fart in the living room any more because his mother-in-law is there.   I pity him.

This dude cant even argue with his own wife freely without thinking the mama go get invovle.

And that is all I can think off ln less than two minutes, I am sure there is more. Abeg kick the old witch out jare.

Can you imagine I am sleeping-with my woman and her mother is in the next room hearing her daughter moan? Kai. Good forbid bad thing. grin
Family / Re: Forcing My Mother-in-law To Leave My Home by ElRazur: 3:41pm On Dec 22, 2010
OP

I think if the relationship ain't working with your mother-in-law, then it is best she moves out. Four days is nothing and to me, it sound like a test of will, you know, who is going to break and call who first.

Personally, I think your decision was made in a moment of anger and madness so I will advice you go back home and re-plan your actions. That is, save up enough money and what not to ensure your long term. Also, be prepared for a long term battle.

As it stand, if you wife agrees from the onset that no family member will be with you guys, then you are within your right to act this way. I like my privacy and I won't even put up with my own brother staying at mine for a week, let alone a mother-in-law.

One thing though, the bond between your wife and her mum will be a tough one to break, but in the end she will have to decide who matters more. You or her mother. Good luck and be prepared.

I even get that kind benin bronze head in my living room wey one local artist carve for me, kini big deal?

Big deal be say, yours ain't hundred plus years old. Big deal be say, the Oba of Benin from 100plus years ago no wear yours. Big deal be say, this one na heritage and have culture behind it. Big deal be say it hurt to see people making money off our culture, especially when it was "stolen" off us.

Thats the thing . . . what we're left with is the court of public opinion, the one that tried Gordon Brown in th Al Megrahi case, if the Nigerian Goverment steps up and gets it into the papers, I'll be satisfied.
There's prolly precedent for that somewhere.

I dey join you hope say Naija goverment makes noise about this one.

If you care to look into it, I think there is a prequel and back story to the whole Benin mask and what not.  If memory serves me right, there was some brouhaha about it in the 80s.
Culture / Re: Stolen Benin City Mask To Be Auctioned In London For N1.25b by ElRazur: 2:17pm On Dec 22, 2010
Kobojunkie:

I am puzzled. Who exactly are you attempting to petition here? The Nigerian government? Or Sothebys?

Goodluck with the whole petition thing. In this country and under English law, I very much doubt there is anything illegal with the auction. As far as it goes, someone paid for it legally and in good faith when it was bought. As it stand, the person of family are now selling it in return.

I am not sure there is any law they broke in that process,

This what I was trying to say as per private collectors and some art stuff.  I mean, it will be a crime now if this was the Mona Lisa (??) or something as it is more or less a state property and cannot be own by one person.
Culture / Re: Stolen Benin City Mask To Be Auctioned In London For N1.25b by ElRazur: 2:09pm On Dec 22, 2010

@Elrazur

Come on, yo know what's more annoying, this thing has been in one man's house for a century.
Like, it wasn't owned by the British Government or the British Museum, it's going to some stuck-up upper class landowners and their trustfund babies.
I think I'd rather have it burnt. . . maybe it's just emotions talking.

In my own opinion though, the Museums in Nigeria should be privatized, then people who make money off it will be force to do things like TV ads and organize paid exhibitions, less likely for things to run down.

I agree.

I think the whole "art collection thing" is a big market and usually features unknown billionaires with good connections. Most of them, upper class bastttttttttaaards lol.

From the history that I read on the one in the British museum, it was claimed that most of the oba of benin building was in a state of disrepair after some war or something and they british "explorer" did help to build part of it.  (Not that I believe the story sha) Having said that, there was a picture depicting the palace and was meant to be from the 18th century or something.
Culture / Re: Stolen Benin City Mask To Be Auctioned In London For N1.25b by ElRazur: 2:02pm On Dec 22, 2010
Tippy Top:

Is there any evidence that this mask was sold by Oba Ovonramwen to the British?
If any one has evidence please share.

Read my statement again.

There were stories with looted African arts and oversea museum years back. I think there was some sort of agreement reached to protect those in museum all across the world. However, the "agreement" cannot be forced on private collectors.

This kind of arrangement allows the Oversea museum to share that "stolen loot" with the home nation so it can be displayed etc. I do however do not know the full details.

Anyway, as per my point, I am merely saying that I expect the Naija government to raise objections or some sort of protest before the auction. However, I am not sure anything has been said so far.

eldee:

That should be our choice shouldn't it??

Haha. You no fit look anyone in the face with that point.

Yes, I agree on the basis of principle that it should be **our choice**. Having said that, let us look at the various historical monuments or sites we have in naija and how much they are in a dilapidated state.

The first "Storey" building in naija. The pictures are shocking.

The rock in Egba, there really isn't much done to promote or protect such a heritage.

The confluence in Kogi state (Where river Niger and Benue meet) is nothing to write home about etc.

The first house that Mungo Park (??) built when he came to lokoja, it was in a state of disrepair last time I saw it. etc

Eldee, as I said, I agree in principle but I do not encourage theft either. It will be nice if my people fit look after things that have history and heritage behind them.

Chrisbenogor:

You dey mind them, later somebody go blame yahoo boys wey dey collect their own share of what was looted from us. This is nauseating abeg, auctioning off what was obviously stolen.

Classic dump naija mentality.

As at the time of theft from us, there were barely laws in place to prevent such thing. However, in this day and age, there are laws in almost country to prevent electronic fraudulent and deception.

Citing examples like you did won't do us any good. It is as good as the new generation of Black people who claim to be getting "justice" for the slave trade era.

eldee:

It's sad . . . notice how it's called the 'punitive expedition' . . . a gentler way to describe murder, massacre and robbery.
It's no different from the terms 'the great crusade', 'scramble for Africa' and most recent the 'war against terrorism'.

I saw that in the Metro this morning and what I wonder is why the Naija government is not taking this further. I have a feeling, there may be some history to it. That is, possible payments and back handers may have changed hands hence the silence.

I think recently, similar story happened with Iran and Iranian authorities made fuss about it. In the end, the British Museum had to compromise. I mean, it is still better than just keeping silent and let this auction go ahead.

If you go the British Museum, there is one on display. (I think I took a photo of it about 3 months ago) but it may have been a replica.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Israel Can't Defeat Hezbollah: Israeli Expert by ElRazur: 1:26pm On Dec 17, 2010
This guy should be called Captain Obvious.

Hezbollah is not a conventional Army. The use of civilian as shields will make it difficult for any Military to take on them or better still take them down. This is well known, it is nothing new.

It is the same reason why it is very difficult to fight taleban. This people are not in uniform and can drop their guns and blend with the civilian population without raising an eye brow.

It is a security strategy to keep people away from bugging him. He was probably tired and not in the mood. I am sure he didn't give such instructions to them lol.

poweredcom:

Akon should have not been in that song , they should just fit in Nate dogg all alone, Akon made the song look wack, even dre was not so audiblein his verse, xcept for Snoop who killed it

Nate dogg is sick and doctors are not sure if he will speak or sing again. Basically the stroke affected the speech area of his brain and it can take a long time in some people to get things to work again. In most cases it may not happen again. I feel sorry for him. He really do not deserve such thing.
