Politics / See The Celebrity Lifestyle Of Chuka Umunna by Emirofsambisa1: 12:15pm On May 17, 2015
British-Nigerian member of parliament Chuka Umunna may have been popular for his charismatic carriage in the last general elections, but only a few knew about his exotic and celebrity like lifestyle.

For a potential Labour leader it’s the most unlikely of venues.

Not a working men’s club in the Labour heartlands where a pint of bitter and a packet of crisps can be bought for loose change, but a members-only ‘den’ tucked away behind The Bank of England where steaks cost £150 and a bottle of cognac can set you back £4,000.

Yet M Den, a shady, decadent eel-skin-lined room at the top of a grand City steakhouse, is where Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna was seen during the Election campaign, after long days spent persuading voters to embrace Labour’s work and welfare policies.

The revelations about Mr Umunna’s nocturnal activities come as intrigue continues to swirl over the reasons for his withdrawal from the Labour Party leadership contest, just days after throwing his hat into the ring.

The 36-year-old said in a statement on Friday that he was not comfortable with the level of ‘pressure and scrutiny’ that came with a leadership campaign.

Former DJ Chuka has been to the M Den so often of late he has been given one of 50 coveted electronic entry keys, according to the club’s manager. This key gains entry to the club through a disguised door on the upper floor of the restaurant, called M, which opened last November with a 90-minute show by rap star Tinie Tempah. Inside, is a louche world of wealth and networking most of Chuka’s constituents in Streatham could only dream of accessing.

Described on the M restaurant’s website as a place where guests ‘can get up to mischief’, it’s so exclusive that even celebrity status does not guarantee access – MasterChef presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode recently applied for membership but were turned down.

Members of the Den have tended to be sporting legends, musicians and leaders of industry,’ manager Martin Williams explained last week.

Though membership is highly exclusive, it is complimentary, but the M Den is anything but cheap. Nicknamed the ‘boys’ playground’, it’s packed with expensive toys and artwork. A £10,000 pop art picture of a topless woman leaning over a snooker table by American photographer Miles Aldridge hangs on the wall next to a £4,000 Bonzini table football table and a selection of PlayStation computer games can be played on the room’s £10,000 mirrored television. Even the M&M chocolates are individually monogrammed with the club’s logo.

Though critics might see Chuka as a champagne socialist, the speciality at the M Den is cognac – and it is sold at eye-wateringly expensive prices. The most popular is the Hennessy Paradis Imperial Cognac, which sells for £3,500 per bottle. The cheapest bottle of cognac costs £300.

The Den has ‘Bottle Lockers’ so members can store leftovers in between visits. There are only 18 lockers and they are reserved for special members such as Chuka.

HOW MUCH FOR A SPOT OF COGNAC OR A STEAK DINNER AT M DEN?

BOTTLES OF COGNAC:

Hennessy XO: £300

Hennessy Richard: £4,000

BEEF: Tajima-gyu kobe. Hyogo prefecture grade 10+/A5, 150g fillet: £150

The club encourages networking but members can choose to have complete privacy and even manage their own bar should they wish.

Martin added: ‘This is Mayfair meets the City. A playroom for grown-ups.

‘We want to be discreet and we want people to search for us. We do not advertise, it is word of mouth.

‘We love welcoming Chuka here so much that we’ve even opened a polo-themed pop-up bar here for the summer and named it Chuka.’

The Chuka bar – which, unlike the Den, is open to anyone who can afford the prices – opened in April with champion polo player Henry Brett riding through the restaurant on a real polo pony.

A spokesman for Mr Umunna initially said that he had never heard of the club and insisted Chuka had never been, but when pressed later admitted that he is a regular but said he did not have an entry key.

Mr Umunna’s withdrawal from the Labour leadership race was said to have delighted the Tories, who feared the Shadow Business Secretary more than the other candidates.

The Yorubas and the Igbos are the problem of this forum. They always come here to start up tribal attacks on each other. Unfortunately, those doing this are the underachieving people from these regions who spend all their time on NL without any meaningful achievement in life.

Also, some non Igbos and non Yorubas on this forum have learnt to open accounts with Igbo and Yoruba monikers just to start a war of comments. Sadly, the supposedly sophisticated and great tribes here fall for the trick ALWAYS.

Even though those tribal comments are funny to read sometimes, the good thing is that those I.diotic bigots on this forum do not represent the views of the Igbo, Yoruba nor Nigerian entirety.

Romance / Experts Say Too Much Sex Leads To Depression by Emirofsambisa1: 8:37pm On May 11, 2015
Scientists may hurt a few people with their recent discovery as a team have suggested that increasing the amount of sex you usually have could induce minor depression.

According to Tech Times, an academic team has just published the findings from its extensive research “between the sheets”.

The researchers from Carnegie Mellon University said that while people with healthy sex lives are generally happy, it’s not necessarily linked to the amount of sex they’re having.

The academics found having more frequent sex didn’t decrease the desire for it or enjoyment, but instead, they suggested, the slight decrease in happiness was likely down to the fact of being asked to do something more rather than letting it happen naturally.

Study co-author Tamar Krishnamurti says the findings could help couples increase their happiness by improving their sex lives, and not necessarily in terms of how often they engage in the act.

Quality can be as important as quantity.Instead of focusing on increasing sexual frequency to the levels they experienced at the beginning of a relationship, couples may want to work on creating an environment that sparks their desire and makes the sex that they do have even more fun,” she said

Four Nigerians will be gunning for seats at the British parliament. The election scheduled for 7th May 2015 will see the four Nigerians with three who are already members of parliament fighting for slots. Below are

CHUKA UMUNNA

Chuka Harrison Umunna (born 17 October 1978) is a British Labour Party politician who has served Streatham as Member of Parliament(MP) since 2010. Umunna is the current Shadow Business Secretary since 2011.

Chuka Umunna's father Bennett, of the Nigerian Igbo ethnic group, died in a road accident in Nigeria in 1992.[3] His mother, Patricia, is asolicitor and daughter of Sir Helenus Milmo QC, the Anglo-Irish High Court judge.

Umunna was educated at Hitherfield Primary School in Streatham, South London, and the Christ Church Primary School in Brixton Hill. He says his parents felt that the local state school had "given up on him" and so moved him to the boys' independent senior school St Dunstan's College, in Catford in southeast London, where he played the cello, and became Deputy Head Boy. During this period he was also achorister at Southwark Cathedral.

He was awarded an upper second class LLB in English and French Law from the University of Manchester; after graduating he studied for one term at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, before studying for an MA at Nottingham Law School. He has said that his politics and moral values come from Christianity, but that he is "not majorly religious"

Grant was the first black woman to be selected to defend a Tory seat and her election made her the Conservatives' first female black MP.

Grant received her first government appointment in September 2012, when she received the dual roles of Under-Secretary of State for Justiceand Under-Secretary for Women and Equalities. Grant attracted media attention in November 2012 after it emerged she was allowed to claim the maximum expenses allowed within the IPSA rules for a London flat, despite her family home being within 20 miles of

Grant was born in Willesden, north London to an English mother and Nigerian father, but grew up in a single parent family after her parents separated and her father emigrated to the United States. She was raised in Carlisle where she lived on the city's Raffles council estate with her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

CHI ONWURAH

Chi Onwurah (born 12 April 1965) is a British Labour Party politician, who was elected at the 2010 general election as the Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne Central, replacing the previous Labour MP Jim Cousins, who decided to step down and left the seat. She is Newcastle's first black MP.

During the depression of the 1930s, Onwurah’s maternal grandfather was a sheet metal worker in Tyneside shipyards. Her mother grew up in poverty in Garth Heads on Newcastle’s quayside. Her father, from Nigeria, was working as a dentist while he studied at Newcastle Medical School when they met and married in the 1950s.

After Chi was born in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1965, her family moved to Awka, Nigeria when she was still a baby. Just two years later the Biafran Civil War broke out bringing famine with it, forcing her mother to bring the children back to Newcastle, whilst her father stayed on in the Biafran army

Celebrities / Nigerian Men Prefer Fair Women - Actress Susan Maxwell by Emirofsambisa1: 10:25am On May 05, 2015
Nollywood actress Susan Maxwell has said Nigerians prefer light skinned ladies. In a recent interview, the actress opened up on the inspiration behind her skin care products.

“Many people are of the opinion that light-skinned ladies are more attractive, and everything they wear shows off better and that is why I am here to help people enhance their complexion. I used to be very dark; I never thought I could become as fair as I am. I did it because I want to practice what I preach. I want them to see me and be blown away, especially those who knew me when I was dark. Because what I’m giving people isn’t something that would damage their skin but repair their skin, I use it on myself as well. If I wasn’t in this line of business, I probably wouldn’t have toned my skin at all. I don’t call it bleaching. I call it skin restoration.”

Finally a reasonable reaction! I hope you know that the issue of late marriage of many igbo ladies is a prominent issue amongst the tribe. I wonder why many ladies should be denied their right to a happy life because of some repulsive tradition by people who are mostly after their stomach. I believe this among other reasons is what necessitated desperation of some otherwise hardworking people. (look at the ones that were recently killed in Indonesia). Marriage is timed, making money requires patience and endurance. These paths don't cross. Let's call a spade a spade.

Please if you don't know what to say, shut your traps. You don't insult another man's culture because you want to hide your ignorance. Delayed marriages is not culture or ethnic sensitive. Just as there are un married igbo girls, there are also unmarried girls from other ethnic group. I know a lot of people who are doing very well and are not married.... Priorities vary Mr man. It's so unfortunate that there are so many ill informed individuals on Nairaland who draw conclusions from speculations. Every ethnic group has their pros and cons. The major reason for delayed marriages in Igboland is not because of money or assumed heavy bride price. It is because the Igbo culture values the marriage institution more than the action hence the longevity of their marriages. Yorubas prefer the action (wedding ceremony and show off) than the institution hence the high rate of multiple marriages in the South West of Nigeria. Igbo men wants to be responsible for their family hence the quest for financial stability before marriage, Yorubas like the Zulus, do not see anything wrong in a lady carrying the financial burden of the home.

As for those calling Igbo ladies prostitutes, they are just lying to themselves because prostitution knows no Language.

I think I have sounded sane enough, now let me sound like a Nairalander to those who will refuse to be educated.

Yoruba boys will soon carry placards in protest of high bride price in Igboland so they can marry igbo ladies and be rest assured that their wives will hardly cheat on them.

Bottom line is, we need to learn more about each other and love one another.
