Four years after the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) kicked off in Lagos, banks have spread the charges on the policy to every part of the country.

This is coming after the successful implementation of the cashless policy in Abia, Anambra, Kano, Ogun, Rivers states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

With the cashlite policy, individual customers are allowed to make cumulative withdrawal of N500,000 daily across the counters and the ATMs, however, withdrawal above this limit will attract the payment of a processing fee of three per cent for the amount above the limit.

Also corporate customers are allowed to make cumulative withdrawal of N3 million daily while withdrawal above the limit will attract a processing fee of five per cent. The nationwide charges which were supposed to take effect last year July had been suspended by the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, when he assumed office in June 2014. Although initially deposits above the stated limits attracted similar charges, Emefiele, as part of efforts to further encourage the policy, scraped the charges on withdrawal.

In his maiden speech where he unveiled his vision for the finance industry, he had mentioned customers’ complaints on the charges on deposits which had made many devise means to avoid the charges, such as opening multiple accounts, a move which he described as detrimental to the cashless policy. Exemptions have, however, been granted on withdrawals for accounts operated by embassies, diplomatic missions, multilateral agencies, aid donor agencies, ministries, departments and agencies of government (revenue collections only), microfinance banks (mfbs) and primary mortgage institutions (PMIs).

These children are just a handful of the thousands of young Filipinos paradoxically risking their lives in the heavily polluted water, in order to survive.
Families living in the nearby slums are some of the poorest in the world, with both adults and children reduced to scavenging through waste for the quantities of recyclable materials needed to make a living.
Many still live in squalor and spend their days sifting through polluted water to find anything they can sell to 24-hour ‘junk shops’ that buy plastic, metal, paper and glass by the kilo, which are sold to massive recycling plants in southern China.
The youngsters are at risk of diseases such as respiratory infections, pneumonia, diarrhoea and tuberculosis from wading through the dirty waters or working on one of the massive neighbouring rubbish dumps.
Unicef says the junk shops take all the profit and none of the risk, typically turning over millions of pesos a year, while paying the dump workers around 50 pesos (£2) a day.
And the charity warned the huge risks they are taking are often for even less gains with less demand than ever for the scrap materials they are desperately collecting.

A poll by Spanish newspaper AS has revealed that a majority of Real Madrid fans would prefer Sergio Ramos to follow through on his mooted transfer to Manchester United.
Ramos is a club legend and one of the world’s best defenders, but obviously Madrid fans are hurt and too proud to plead with any player to stay against their will.
Not every Madrid fan is hissing at Ramos, but 55 percent voted that they would like to see him exit. Perhaps their vitriol would be better aimed at someone else.
The World Cup-winning Spain international reportedly became keen on leaving the Bernabeu because of the way he was being treated by club president Florentino Perez.
While other players were being made to feel valued, Ramos sat twiddling his thumbs waiting to be offered a new deal. Well, apparently Madrid won’t sell for less than €90 million, how’s that for being valued?

Globacom has donated a 100KVA power-generating set to the Lagos State Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The company’s business director, Lagos State Division, Mr. Kunle Akanmu, said the generator was to boost power supply at the camp.

He said the gesture was part of the company’s strategies to give back to society, adding that Glo also placed premium on the Nigerian youths and would always lend support to their empowerment and well-being.
“We are aware of the need by youths to have regular access to electricity so that they can have unrestrained access to data and voice call services. They need to call their loved ones when they are on the mandatory one year national youth service and also be on the social media regularly. It is this knowledge that has moved us to donate this power-generating set so that they can stay abreast of happenings around the globe without fear of power interruptions,” he said.
Akanmu disclosed that Glo was committed to supporting civic and social projects that would have positive impact on the lives of youths in various communities across the country.

The national secretariat of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that the nationwide orientation course for the 2015 Batch ‘A’ corps members will commence on Tuesday, May 5.

It added that the orientation programme for stream II of the same batch is expected to commence on June 2.
To this end, corps members deployed to states in the North-eastern part of the country, apart from Taraba State, would have their orientation programme SCHEDULED for stream II due to security reasons.
This category of corps members would also undergo their orientation programmes outside their states of deployment.
According to the SCHEDULE released by the NYSC management yesterday in Abuja, corps members deployed to Yobe State would observe their orientation programme in Kano State NYSC orientation camp, corps members for Gombe State would proceed to Jigawa State for their orientation, while corps members posted to Bauchi State are expected to undergo their orientation at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Plateau State.
Also, corps members posted to Borno State are SCHEDULED to have their orientation in Nasarawa State while Adamawa State corps members have been directed to Taraba State for their orientation programme.
According to the schedule, “Registration commences on May 5 and closes by 12:00 midnight of Wednesday, May 6. Official closing ceremony for the orientation programme is SCHEDULED to hold on Tuesday, 25. However, corps members deployed to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe States will be hosted in stream II and their orientation will commence on June 2, 2015 and closes by Monday, June 22.”
Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Delta, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger, Ogun States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would also host stream II of the 2015 Batch ‘A’ Orientation Course

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) plans to conduct a ‘mock’ election to publicly test run its Smart Card Reader (SCR) machines, an official of the commission has revealed.

The public test run is part of INEC’s efforts to demonstrate the efficiency of the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) before the scheduled March 28 presidential election, said Olusegun Agbaje, the Ondo State resident electoral commissioner (REC). He disclosed that INEC plans to hold the ‘mock’ election in twelve states, including Ondo, Lagos and Ekiti in the southwest region.

President Goodluck Jonathan has forwarded the names of seven new ministers to the Senate for confirmation, African Independent Television [AIT] is reporting.

Among the nominees are a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, Kenneth Kobani, a former National Treasurer of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria [ACN], who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, and a former Senator, Patrick Akwashiki.

Miss Colombia Paulina Vega has been crowned Miss Universe in pageant in Miami, beating out contestants from 88 other countries.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha were the runners-up during Sunday's competition in Miami.

Vega is from Barranquilla, Colombia and is studying business administration. She said the contests leading to MIss Universe were the first she'd participated in and will be her last as she's eager to return to her studies in business administration.

The 22-year-old is the granddaughter of a legendary tenor, Gastón Vega.

Earlier this week she said, "It will be a dream come true to represent the woman of today. A woman that not only care about being beautiful and being glamorous, but also cares about being a professional, intelligent, hard-working person."

Government College, formerly Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, which Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, graduated from in 1961, has released Mr. Buhari’s secondary school certificate examination results.

The results, obtained exclusively by PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday, confirm Mr. Buhari’s claim that he undertook the University of Cambridge West African School Certificate Examinations and obtained five credits in English Language, Geography, Hausa Language, History, and Health Science.

PREMIUM TIMES obtained the computer printout from Cambridge University as well as a statement of result, signed by the current principal of Katsina College, dated January 21, 2015.

The results show that Mr. Buhari, a former military head of state, failed in Mathematics and Woodwork, and had a pass in Literature in English.

The examination centre number was 8280 while Mr. Buhari’s candidate number was 002.

The statement of results is printed on the letter head paper of the Katsina State Ministry of Education, and it shows that the examination took place in 1961.

The Cambridge print out also shows the result of 17 other candidates at the centre, including Shehu Yar’adua, a former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters.

Controversy over Mr. Buhari’s result escalated Tuesday after the Nigerian Army, which had earlier admitted to having a copies of his certificate, reversed itself saying it could not even attest to the details listed in his records.

The spokesperson of the Army, Olajide Laleye, said “Neither the original copy, certified true copy (CTC) nor statement of result of Major-.Gen. Mohammadu Buhari‘s WASC result is in his personal file.”

He said while it is the practice in the Nigerian Army that before candidates are shortlisted for commissioning into the officers’ cadre of the service, the selection board verifies the original copies of credentials as presented, “There is no available record to show that this process was followed in the 1960s.”

The military’s comments came after the retired general had said that his lost copies of results were with the Army, an explanation he gave ahead of elections February 14.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday said his administration probed the accounts of the Petroleum Trust Fund headed by the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and found nothing unpleasant.

Buhari headed the PTF, inaugurated in March 1995, under the regime of the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha. The PTF was established to manage the fund accruable from the increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise know as petrol, from N3.25 to N11.

The PTF was scrapped by Obasanjo on assumption of the Presidency in 1999. The ex-President also set up a committee to investigate the accounts of the PTF following allegations of N25bn fraud in the agency.

Obasanjo’s fresh revelation was made in Ogun State when Buhari and other national leaders of the APC visited the ex-President at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta.

On the Buhari’s entourage were the APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; the party’s former interim national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; a former governor of Lagos State and a national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, and the governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, among others.

Obasanjo said when he looked into the report submitted to him on the alleged fraud in the PTF he did not see anything incriminating concerning Buhari.

He said, “When you were going to become the manager of PTF. We talked about it and when you finished and I took over, we looked into it.

“I haven’t said this publicly, I would say it publicly now. When we looked into it, there was really nothing amiss except that that organisation went from road building to mosquito net-buying and all sorts of things.

“And what the investigation discovered is a bit of inconsistency in prices and all that. In one area, mosquito net might have been given for N50; in another, N45. And I then remarked that this is fishy. We should look into it.

“And I called my brother and colleague (Buhari), I said see this and he said ‘look we are managing billions of Naira and I tried to make sure I see everything.But I will not say that what they have said about this is correct or not correct. But I can assure you, I tried to see everything.’

“I said okay Muhammadu, between me, you and God, was there any personal benefit for you? And you said ‘no.’ I said that is the end of the matter.

“Although there was that investigation, its report was not of any material importance.”

Obasanjo asked Buhari and other presidential candidates to address the nagging issues of insecurity, economy and deficit in infrastructure.

He implored the presidential candidates to focus on issues rather than trivialities.

He said, “I hope people will face issues rather than trivialities. On occasions like this, issues are very important. And you have mentioned three areas which are demanding issues in Nigeria today.

“I will just beg all of you who are contesting to add one to it; you mentioned economy, you mentioned corruption, and you mentioned security.

“I will beg of you to add infrastructure. It’s very important. You may take it as part of economy but I will take infrastructure as special and give it special attention.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo today escalated his rejection of President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term bid by declaring his current mindset to be “Anything But Jonathan” (ABJ). Buhari, OBJ, other APC dignitaries

He expressed his feelings to several of his aides following a late evening meeting with President Jonathan at his home in Abeokuta. Both men were in the presence of Pastor Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and Bishop David Oyedepo of Winner’s Chapel.

To make matters worse, a few hours after meeting with Jonathan, Obasanjo met with leaders of the All People’s Congress (APC) and their presidential candidate, Muhammad Buhari, where he affirmed he will support the best candidate regardless of party affiliation.

Jonathan’s closed-door meeting with Obasanjo clearly failed to soften the former leader’s hostility towards his floundering re-election bid as Obasanjo bluntly told him that having referred to him as a “tout”, it was hypocritical for Jonathan to turn around to describe him as the best president Nigeria ever had. It would also be recalled that two months ago, presidential adviser Doyin Okupe gave Jonathan that honor.

On Sunday, as he received members of the Northern Elders Council in Abuja, an angry Mr. Jonathan had in a barely-veiled description of Obasanjo, dismissed him as a statesman.

"Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not, they are just ordinary politicians,” Jonathan told his guests. “To be a statesman is not because you have occupied a big office before, but the question is what are you bringing to bear? Are you building this country or are you a part of people who tell lies to destroy the country?”

Upon arriving at the meeting with Obasanjo today, Jonathan tried to turn on the charm, lavishing praise on Obasanjo as he blamed the escalation of attacks on him as the work of his (Jonathan) aides.

President Obasanjo apparently did not buy any of the goods Jonathan was hawking. Shortly after the encounter, he told his aides he would not change his position on Jonathan’s presidential bid.

Obasanjo’s subsequent and open display of affection towards the APC leadership is reportedly sending shock waves up and down Jonathan’s camp, where it is regarded as confirmation that the conciliation efforts with Obasanjo have collapsed, leaving him in grave political danger with the election just one month away. It will be the first time a PDP candidate tried to win the presidency with Obasanjo not the candidate, or firmly on his side.

The dollar rose against all other major currencies in 2014 for the first time since the turn of the century, as investors expecting interest rates to rise piled into the greenback, Financial Times has reported.

The naira also fell against the dollar by 13 per cent in the year.

The US currency made gains against the euro, yen, pound, South Korean won, Brazilian real and 11 other global currencies this year, marking the first time since the height of the dotcom boom in 2000 that all major currencies as ranked by Bloomberg have fallen against the dollar.

Expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in 2015 from historic lows have been a major factor in the dollar’s strength, as central banks in other countries including the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan continue to take an easing stance. The euro and the yen have both fallen 12 per cent against the dollar this year.

Investors have been reversing the trend of the past few years to put money outside the US in search of higher yields and stronger returns in emerging markets as interest rate expectations have shifted and the US economy has powered ahead — a trend that analysts are predicting will continue in 2015.

“Money that was pushed out into riskier assets and currencies is coming home,” said Kit Juckes, a foreign currency strategist at Société Générale. “The more capital-starved economies weaken in emerging markets, and the more the US economy outperforms, the higher the dollar could rise — until the Federal Reserve too is dragged into the ‘currency wars’ and tries to slow or stop the move.”

“The dollar is still a very clear trade,” said Stephen Jen, head of currency hedge fund SLJ Macro Partners.

The dollar index, which weights the US currency against a basket of major trading counterparts, hit its highest level in nine years on Tuesday and has risen 13 per cent this year.

The slump in global oil prices has also played a role in dollar strength, as oil-exporting nations have seen the value of their currencies tumble. Norway’s krone was the worst performing major currency against the dollar this year, falling 19 per cent.
