You absolutely know what you are saying. Am impressed!

davodyguy:
I know only few would really understand and interpret what they saw and read.

From the pics, Egbin has an installed capacity of 1320MW from the 6 thermal plants and currently Egbin is doing 1100MW, which is very very commendable.

If its true, then it must be sustained. Fashola, Egbin management and the NGC ( Nigerian Gas Company) must do everything possible to maintain this level and even get the 1st unit .working again.

That's the message that was passed.

Everyone must play their respective roles.
Fashola to pay the debt
Egbin management should pay NGC
NGC must continue to supply Gas.
Vandals must stop tampering with gas pipes
Lastly, Nigerians must pay for what they consume

Yes I certainly am not in Kaduna, and im grateful to God for that. If i recall your scripture well, it says "a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God"(John 16:2). You can only fight evil with good, else the cycle continues.

Da Mayor: Anyone who sheds blood in the name of Jesus Christ is MOST CERTAINLY not of Christ (without apology). If you claim to be born of the spirit, you can only take on the genes of your father. Our Father (Christ)never killed anyone or commanded anyone killed. Instead this was his charge:
"LOVE YOUR ENEMIES, BLESS THEM THAT CURSE YOU, DO GOOD TO THEM THAT HATE YOU, AND PRAY FOR THEM WHICH DESPITEFULLY USE, AND PERSECUTE YOU. Those were the charges of My Father. If you do otherwise, YOU ARE OF YOUR FATHER THE DEVIL, FOR HE WAS A MURDERER FROM THE BEGINING.
I would appreciate if my muslim colleagues could see their Father in that light.

Am sure you are not in Kaduna.

Politics / China Overtakes Japan As No.2 Economy by esajay1: 11:03am On Jul 31, 2010
By Aileen Wang and Alan Wheatley

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has overtaken Japan to become the world's second-largest economy, the fruit of three decades of rapid growth that has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.

Depending on how fast its exchange rate rises, China is on course to overtake the United States and vault into the No.1 spot sometime around 2025, according to projections by the World Bank, Goldman Sachs and others.

China came close to surpassing Japan in 2009 and the disclosure by a senior official that it had now done so comes as no surprise. Indeed, Yi Gang, China's chief currency regulator, mentioned the milestone in passing in remarks published on Friday.

"China, in fact, is now already the world's second-largest economy," he said in an interview with China Reform magazine posted on the website (www.safe.gov.cn) of his agency, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.

Cruising past Japan might give China bragging rights, but its per-capita income of about $3,800 a year is a fraction of Japan's or America's.

"China is still a developing country, and we should be wise enough to know ourselves," Yi said, when asked whether the time was ripe for the yuan to become an international currency.

CAN IT BE SUSTAINED?

China's economy expanded 11.1 percent in the first half of 2010, from a year earlier, and is likely to log growth of more than 9 percent for the whole year, according to Yi.

China has averaged more than 9.5 percent growth annually since it embarked on market reforms in 1978. But that pace was bound to slow over time as a matter of arithmetic, Yi said.

If China could chalk up growth this decade of 7-8 percent annually, that would still be a strong performance. The issue was whether the pace could be sustained, Yi said, not least because of the environmental constraints China faces.

In an assessment disputed by Beijing, the International Energy Agency said last week that China had surpassed the United States as the world's largest energy user.

If China can keep up a clip of 5-6 percent a year in the 2020s, it will have maintained rapid growth for 50 years, which Yi said would be unprecedented in human history.

The uninterrupted economic ascent, which saw China overtake Britain and France in 2005 and then Germany in 2007, is gradually translating into clout on the world stage.

China is a leading member of the Group of 20 rich and emerging nations, which since the 2008 financial crisis has become the world's premier economic policy-setting forum.

In one important respect, however, China is still a shrinking violet: anxious to shield itself from the rough-and-tumble of global markets, it does not permit its currency to be freely exchanged except for purposes of trade and foreign direct investment.

And Yi said Beijing had no timetable to make the yuan fully convertible.

"China is very big and its development is unbalanced, which makes this problem much more complicated. It's difficult to reach a consensus on it," he said.

In the same vein, China was in no rush to turn the yuan into a global currency.

"We must be modest and we still have to keep a low profile. If other people choose the yuan as a reserve currency, we won't stop that as it is the demand of the market. However, we will not push hard to promote it," he added.

NO BIG RISE IN YUAN

China has been encouraging the use of the yuan beyond its borders, allowing more trade to be settled in renminbi and taking a series of measures to establish Hong Kong as an offshore center where the currency can circulate freely.

But Yi said: "Don't think that since people are talking about it, the yuan is close to becoming a reserve currency. Actually, it's still far from that."

He said expectations of a stronger yuan, also known as the renminbi, had diminished. There was no basis for a sharp rise in the exchange rate, partly because the price level in China had risen steadily over the past decade.

"This suggests that the value of the renminbi has moved much closer to equilibrium compared with 10 years ago," he said.

Yi's comments are unlikely to go down well in Washington, where lawmakers have scheduled a hearing for September 16 to consider whether U.S. government action is needed to address China's exchange rate policy.

China scrapped the yuan's 23-month-old peg to the dollar on June 19 and resumed a managed float. The yuan has since risen only 0.8 percent against the dollar, and economists calculate that it has fallen in value against a basket of currencies.

China would stick to the principle of holding its $2.45 trillion of official reserves in a mix of currencies and assets.

The stockpile -- the world's largest - was so big that it was impossible to adjust its currency composition in a short space of time: "We won't be particularly bearish on the dollar at a given time or particularly bearish on the euro at another time."

Both houses of Nigeria's parliament have voted to confirm the appointment of Kaduna state governor Namadi Sambo as the country's new vice-president.

Mr Sambo, a northerner, was nominated for the post last week following the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua.

Yar'Adua was succeeded by his vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Analysts say the new vice-president will be seen as a strong contender for the 2011 presidential elections in Africa's most populous nation.

Inter Milan were crowned Italian champions for the fifth consecutive season on Sunday, but Jose Mourinho's side had their nerves tested as Claudio Ranieri's Roma pushed them all the way.

Diego Milito celebrated his goal wildly on Sunday

With Inter still being held away at relegated Siena, Roma took a 2-0 lead against Chievo thanks to two emphatic finishes from Mirko Vucinic and Daniele de Rossi and, as things stood, were leading Inter on the clubs' head-to-head record.

But Diego Milito scored his 28th goal of the season in all competitions when finishing expertly past Gianluca Curci after 57 minutes to give Inter the win and with it the Scudetto.

The result means they finish two points ahead of Roma, and have the chance to win an historic Treble when they play Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

Meanwhile, Sampdoria secured the final Champions League spot, joining Inter, Roma and AC Milan in Europe's top competition, thanks to a 1-0 win over Napoli. Giampaolo Pazzini scored after 51 minutes.

Palermo could have taken fourth place if Samp slipped up but in the end a 2-1 victory over Atalanta was not enough. Edinson Cavani scored twice, including an injury time penalty.

Atalanta, Siena and Livorno were all relegated, while Palermo and Napoli took the Europa League spots.

Politics / Ibori Supporters Attack Police by esajay1: 7:55am On Apr 22, 2010
Police trying to arrest a former state governor in Nigeria charged with corruption have been attacked by his supporters, police say.

Officers were ambushed in Oghara, the hometown of James Ibori in Delta state.

Mr Ibori has been accused of corruption and money laundering while in office by Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Tuesday, the inspector general of police ordered the arrest of Mr Ibori within 24 hours.

The police spokesperson told the BBC the attack would not prevent the authorities from carrying out their "constitutional mandate" to arrest Mr Ibori.

On Monday, Mr Ibori's supporters blocked roads leading into Oghara to protest against the EFCC's charges against the ex-governor of the oil-rich state.

This is not the first time the EFCC has tried to prosecute Mr Ibori.

In December 2009, a court in Asaba cleared Mr Ibori of 170 charges of corruption - involving the laundering of millions of dollars - because there was no clear evidence to convict.

The EFCC has been at the centre of a political storm in recent years - dogged by allegations of political bias.

Politics / Re: President Umaru Yar'adua Meet Clerics by esajay1: 6:06am On Apr 03, 2010
is this a new strategy for power struggle?
Politics / President Umaru Yar'adua Meet Clerics by esajay1: 5:50am On Apr 03, 2010
Senior Nigerian clerics have told the BBC they have met the country's ailing President, Umaru Yar'Adua, saying he had difficulty speaking.

He went to Saudi Arabia in November for treatment and, despite returning home recently, has not been seen in public.

The clerics said he had been able to shake hands and alert to what had been happening during their prayer meeting.

His absence created widespread alarm in Nigeria, prompting his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, to assume executive powers.

The BBC's Caroline Duffield in Lagos says it is the first time anyone outside his family has spoken of seeing the president for many months.

ANALYSIS

Caroline Duffield, BBC News, Lagos
When Mr Yar'Adua fell ill, a charged atmosphere seized Nigeria's political world, and many people feared a coup.

An ugly power struggle began between the president's allies, who fought to keep him in office, and those who wanted power handed to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Shortly after Mr Jonathan was made acting president in February, Mr Yar'Adua was smuggled back into the country in an apparent attempt to grab back power. But it was too late - political support had shifted to the new acting president.

This latest twist - a carefully managed meeting, with an apparently recuperating president on display for chosen friends and clerics - will provoke yet more questions about what his allies plan to do next.

Ustaz Musa Mohamed, chief imam of the Abuja National Mosque, said the president had sat next to his wife, with an aide close by, at the Presidential Villa on Thursday evening.

He did not stand up or move about but shook hands with the clerics, raised his hands to join them in prayer and moved his lips to try to speak.

Ibrahim Datti Ahmed, chairman of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, said the meeting lasted 10 mintues.

"We said the purpose of visiting him was to see if he actually exists," he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.

"Because there is a lot of speculation in the Nigerian press, that the president was not even in the country, that the president may have died or was not there.

"He was pale but certainly he was far far better than what we had been led to understand."

Mr Yar'Adua fell ill on 23 November last year and was flown to Saudi Arabia, where he stayed for three months.

His term of office expires in May 2011.

But amid the continuing uncertainty over his condition, it was announced last month that next year's presidential election could be brought forward by three months.

Politics / Nigerian President Umaru Yar'adua 'returns Home' by esajay1: 8:21am On Feb 24, 2010
Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has returned home after three months' treatment in Saudi Arabia, officials say, but his condition is unknown.

A plane landed from Jeddah at the presidential wing of Abuja airport in the middle of the night, where an ambulance was waiting on the tarmac.

Earlier this month, Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan became acting leader as fears mounted of a power vacuum.

Mr Yar'Adua had been suffering from a heart condition and kidney problems.

The BBC's Ahmed Idris says two planes arrived amid tight security at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at about 0200 local time (0100 GMT).

He just landed at Abuja airport, he is on his way to the [presidential] villa now

Government source

Profile: President Umaru Yar'Adua
Although there has been no official confirmation of Mr Yar'Adua's return, two cabinet ministers told our correspondent the president was on board one of the jets.

And a government source told Reuters news agency: "[Mr Yar'Adua] just landed at Abuja airport on a Saudi plane escorted by the presidential plane. He is on his way to the [presidential] villa now."

Our correspondent says everyone except presidency officials was kept out of the airport.

He followed the official convoy the 40km (25 miles) into central Abuja and says there was a military presence every 300m on the route, which became more stringent towards the city centre.

Acting President Jonathan has adopted the mantle of power
The 58-year-old leader's state of health is unclear, and it is not known whether he wants to return to his post.

Mr Yar'Adua was flown out to Jeddah after falling ill last November to be treated for pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane covering and protecting the heart.

He has not been seen in public since then and there has been no official report on his health condition.

Our correspondent says the rest of Wednesday will be crucial, as Nigerians wait to see whether the president himself turns up to a scheduled cabinet meeting.

If he does not appear, questions will be asked as to whether Mr Yar'Adua is fit enough to resume his duties.

A delegation of Nigerian ministers had travelled to Saudi Arabia on Monday for an update on Mr Yar'Adua's health.

Acting President Jonathan has in his absense been reshuffling ministers, pledging to tackle power shortages and forging ahead with an amnesty for militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Some politicians have said he could win support to run for president in elections due by April next year.

Politics / $1bn 'for Peace' Nigeria Gets From European Union by esajay1: 7:45pm On Nov 22, 2009
The European Commission has signed a $1bn (£602m) development pact with Nigeria, aimed at tackling corruption and promoting peace.

A substantial amount of the funding will be spent on resolving conflict in the oil-rich and crime-plagued Niger Delta, the EU's development chief said.

The money will also target electoral reform and improving human rights.

But correspondents say many Nigerians will doubt the money will get to its intended targets.

$1 BILLION EU FUNDS
25%: peace and security
44%: governance and human rights
16%: trade, region integration and energy
15%: environment, health, culture and sciences

The BBC's Caroline Duffield, in Lagos, says corruption touches the lives of everyone in Nigeria and leaves the vast majority of people in poverty.

And she says many Nigerians believe the current government is losing the fight against corruption.

Almost a third of the EU money is devoted to the Niger Delta region.

For years militants have blown up pipelines and kidnapped foreign oil workers, demanding a fairer share of the wealth.

"I'm delighted that a substantial amount of this financing will go to support conflict resolution and the peace process in the Niger Delta which has been ravaged by years of unrest," said the EU's development commissioner Karel De Gucht .

Over the past few months, thousands of militants have given up their weapons in an amnesty deal offered by the government in return for the promise of education and jobs.

A three-month respite from the violence has brought back some oil and gas production, but sceptics fear the former fighters could resume violence if they do not quickly find work.

1) Is this a Greeks gift?

2) Is this a way to pay the politians so they ( their companies) cotinue to exploit the country's oil?
Politics / Ribadu Tells Of Nigeria Corruption Battle - $15m Bribe From Ibori by esajay1: 1:54pm On Nov 15, 2009
What do you have to say about this man?

Nuhu Ribadu is a man who continues to divide Nigerian public opinion two years after the anti-corruption campaigner was forced from his job.

His supporters portray him as a relentless pursuer of the thieves in high places who have kept most residents of this oil-rich country mired in poverty.

As chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ribadu even sent his own boss - the inspector general of police - to prison.

He brought more than 1,000 cases to court, and secured 270 convictions.

Before his appointment no company in Nigeria had ever been charged for bribery.

However, his critics accused him of being a political hatchet-man.

They accused him of only pursuing cases against enemies of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and leaving his friends untouched.

Dismissed

Shortly after Mr Obasanjo left office in 2007, Mr Ribadu was removed from his post and sent on a year's "training course".

Some people were hired, and their responsibility was to get me. Luckily my car is bulletproof

Nuhu Ribadu
"I was dismissed," he told the BBC World Service's Outlook programme.

"There was a clear signal that no-one should do anything about fighting corruption. That is very sad."

He soon fled the country because, he says, two attempts were made on his life - one while he was driving.

"Some people were hired, and their responsibility was to get me.

"They came quite close. The individual behind the driver brought out his hand and shot three shots at my car. Luckily my car is bulletproof.

"When they attempted that, I left the country the next day."

Raw cash

As head of the EFCC, Mr Ribadu found himself in a potentially lucrative position should he succumb to the same corruption that grips the nation.

Mr Ibori's $35m assets included several properties in London
"They'll try everything," he said.

"They will attempt to bribe you. If it fails, they will blackmail you and try to make a mess of your name."

One extraordinary bribery attempt sticks out in his mind.

"One of them gave me $15 million in cash. Raw cash. American dollars.

"I got my people to take it to Central Bank of Nigeria and deposit it there. We used it as an exhibit in the trial against the individual. We got him locked for about two or three months in jail while I was office."

But James Ibori, a former governor of the oil-rich Delta state and key backer of new President Umara Yar'Adua, was freed on bail and his case has since languished in the courts.

Soon after this case Mr Ribadu was removed from his post.

'It's not over'

Since leaving the country, he has found himself at the centre of allegations over his own professional conduct - being accused of not declaring assets.

He says he will not return to Nigeria to challenge the allegations.

OUTLOOK
Outlook is broadcast daily on the BBC World Service
It is also available as a podcast
"The reason why they are doing that is simply thinking 'lets get him back in to the country. We'll seize his own documents, possibly get him behind bars.'"

"It's as much as saying 'Go and get killed'. And I think that is not right. I love life, I want to live."

He did, however, make a brief appearance in Lagos in September for the funeral of human rights activist Gani Fawehinmi, even though the authorities were supposedly desperate to find him.

Mr Ribadu does vow to return home to finish his work.

"I will certainly go back to Nigeria. It's not over.

"This is the sad story of our own country. This is money belonging to the people.

"This is what is supposed to be used to solve the problem that we are facing. Look at how it's being wasted. See what is happening with our people. Today they use the money to fight for their own survival, they give it to lawyers across the world, they buy private jets.

"Total waste."

It has become fashionable for some people to be hypercritical and blame the masses for the actions of the kleptocrats in power. This blame would be justified if we were allowed to vote or the elections were not rigged.

The absence of military uniform doesn't mean democracy. Next time people want to castigate the masses, they should remember these four words - Free and Fair Elections.

Note, rigged elections are executed by individuals who are follower. One man cant rig an election or organise a military coupe by himself alone. The idea and execution of rigging/ coupe would have been supported by the follower who are citizen either active or passive. i.e ACTIVE: fully participating in the act PASSIVE: been complacent "its not my concern".

Politics / More Nigeria Oil Militants Disarm by esajay1: 5:18am On Oct 04, 2009
A senior militant leader in Nigeria's oil-rich Delta region is to instruct followers to lay down their weapons, a day after two more commanders disarmed.

Government Tompolo, who heads the main rebel faction in the western Delta, is due to make the move before an amnesty expires at midnight local time.

On Saturday, militant commanders Akete Tom and Farah Dagogo led their fighters in handing over weapons.

The government has offered an amnesty in return for pledges of cash and jobs.

Militants took up arms in 2006, saying proceeds from the region's oil wealth had not benefited local people.

Although Nigeria is the world's eighth biggest oil exporter, unrest in the Delta has prevented it from pumping much more than two-thirds of its production capacity.

Exuberant mood

Correspondents said militants were in exuberant mood on Saturday as they marched through the streets of Port Harcourt carrying their weapons and swigging alcohol.

Thousands of people lined the streets, cheering as the fighters made their way to the disarmament sites.

In a statement, Farah Dagogo said: "I Farah Dagogo, overall field commander for the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), accept together with field commanders in Rivers state, the presidential offer of amnesty to militants who lay down their weapons. We are surrendering all weapons under our direct control."

Ateke Tom has led many attacks on Nigeria's oil industry
Fellow militant leader Ateke Tom and hundreds of his followers also disarmed at a beach ceremony in Port Harcourt.

With only hours to go before the amnesty expires, Government Tompolo is still to disarm, but he has promised to do so by midnight on Sunday.

Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua's special adviser on the Delta, Timi Alaibe, says he is confident that all of the militants will give up the fight.

However, BBC Africa analyst Mary Harper says that unless the government keeps to its side of the bargain - paying former fighters and training them so they can find jobs - it is possible that the militants will resume their campaign of disrupting oil production.

Business / Untl Posts N730 Mn Loss ….hints On Possible Shutdown Of Operations by esajay1: 11:43am On Sep 23, 2009
Following the persistent delay in the take off of the N100 billion stimulus package for the textile industry, a major textile firm in the country – United Nigeria Textile Plc (UNTL) has hinted of the posibility of shutting down its operations, going by difficulties faced in its operations in the country as evident by its dismal financial performances over the years.

The company in its audited result for the year ended December 31, 2008, presented to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), last week, declared a loss after tax and exceptional income of N730.6 million compared with a loss of N1.73 billion in its 2007 financial year. Its turnover dipped by 34.12 per cent, from N18.55 billion in 2007 to N12.22 billion in the year under review.

In the report, the company, through its auditors informed the NSE that its going concern is under threat. According to the report by the NSE, “The Auditors without qualifying their opinion noted that the going concern of the company is under threat.”

Also, in its unaudited results for the first quarter ended, March 31, 2009, the company announced a turnover of N2.33 billion compared to N3.1 billion recorded in the comparable period of 2008, it posted a loss after tax of N514.9 million compared with a loss after tax of N213.55 million recorded in 2008.

If the company, which is the only textile company remaining on the NSE, goes ahead to shut down its activities, the Textile sub-sector of the NSE would likely be scrapped in addition to other economic problems that its closure might pose.

In recent times, of the six textile firms quoted on the first-tier securities segment of the NSE, four have been delisted – Enpee Plc, Asaba Textile Mills Plc, Aba Textile Mills Plc and Dangote-owned Nigerian Textile Mills Plc, while Afprint, applied for reclassification to the Agricultural/Agro-Allied sub-sector of the NSE, following its full diversion to agricultural production and stoppage of textile manufacturing activities.

Udeofson Garment Factory Plc is in the second tier segment of the NSE, and has been redundant, as it has not recorded a single transaction since April 14, 2000.

According to market analysts, the woes of the Nigerian textile industry, is as a result of the lack of commitment on the part of the Federal Government to address the numerous problems facing the sector, such as influx of cheap imports, absence of power supply, high operating costs and other unfriendly business climate.

The Federal Government, during the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in an apparent effort to rescue the country’s ailing textile industry announced a N70 billion stimulus package to be disbursed to textile firms in the country, while Umaru Musa Yar’Adua-led government proposed a N100 billion stimulus package.

However, many months after, nothing has been heard of the fund, while a number of textile firms have closed down with many others contemplating towing similar line.According to experts, of the 175 textile firms operating in the country in the 1980s, over 150 have shut down, leaving only about 25 still in operations.
Politics / Re: MEND Extends Ceasefire By 30 Days by esajay1: 2:36pm On Sep 16, 2009
The main rebel group in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta has announced that it is extending its ceasefire by 30 days.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) said the move would allow more time for talks with the government on its weapons amnesty.

But Mend threatened renewed strikes on the oil industry and the Nigerian military if the group's key concerns were not met.

Mend's unilateral 60-day ceasefire expired at midnight on Tuesday.

The rebels have been fighting to drive the army out of certain areas of the Niger Delta and allow displaced people to return to their homes.

'Meaningful dialogue'

"The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) is extending its unilateral ceasefire which expired midnight (2300 GMT), 15 September 2009 by 30 days," the rebels said in a statement.

"The government should use this extension of time to do the right thing instead of pretending to talk peace while arming the military for a war it cannot win."

Mend also said that did not recognise the government's weapons amnesty "that has not made any provision for meaningful dialogue on the root issues that gave birth to the Niger Delta unrest".

The Nigerian government has so far made no public comments on Mend's latest move.

In June, the government offered the amnesty to all rebels who laid down their weapons in the region.

Some militant leaders are co-operating, saying they want to return to civilian life.

One Mend leader has already dumped a large number of weapons, while two other are in negotiations to do the same.

But one Mend's faction warned earlier this week it would end the ceasefire.

The faction is widely believed to be led by Henry Okah, the man who was in jail for nearly two years.

Numerous attacks by Mend on installations in the Niger Delta in recent years have seriously disrupted the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
