The President, in a posting on his Facebook wall on Sunday, conveyed his sadness over the reported joy expressed by Mr Abubakar over the loss of Osun State to the opposition party; Action Congress of Nigeria. Until his return to the PDP this year, Mr Abubakar was a member of the Action Congress and was the party's presidential candidate in 2007.

The former Vice President, in a statement issued on Saturday, stated that "we are reaping the consequences of Obasanjo's gross mismanagement of not only the PDP in the South west but the entire country. We too dey laugh ooo!" This was an apparent response to former president, Olusegun Obasanjo's derisive laughter over his (Atiku's) selection as the consensus candidate of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) ahead of the PDP's primaries.
