Hollywood actors strike, shutting down the film, TV industry
Hollywood actors have voted to strike, joining already-striking writers in a move that shuts down the production of countless movies and TV shows.
“I went in in earnest, thinking we could avert the strike, so the gravity of this move is not lost on me,” Screen Actors Guild president Fran Drescher said Thursday at a news conference in Los Angeles announcing the strike, which officially begins at midnight local time Thursday and will find actors on the picket lines Friday morning.
We had no choice. We are the victims here, being victimized by a very greedy entity,” she said. “They stand on the wrong side of history. We stand in unprecedented unity. At some point the jig is up, you can’t keep being marginalized and disrespected. The business model has been changed by streaming and AI. If we don’t stand tall right now, we’ll all be in jeopardy. At some point you have to say, no, we’re not going to take this anymore.”
The combined SAG and Writers Guild of America strikes mean the immediate shutdown of any TV show or movie currently in production, and includes promotional appearances ranging from red carpet walks to media junkets. While the duration of the strike is an unknown, some reports suggest studios are willing to hold out into the fall to win concessions.
“The studios are consolidating in a bid to compete with Netflix, the only one who seems ready for Hollywood’s fully digital era,” says Aymar Jean Christian, associate professor of communication studies and director of the Media and Data Equity Lab at Northwestern University.
The streaming model is making the studios both more powerful and cost-conscious,” he says. “This will be a grind. Unless the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) gives in quickly, which seems unlikely, this could be the longest production slowdown in history.”

Sit-at-home directives not issued by IPOB, security agencies must tackle criminal activity – Peter Obi
Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has described the sit-at-home directives in the southeast as the handiwork of a criminal enterprise.
In a statement posted on his official Twitter page on Thursday, Obi said the sit-at-home orders are not issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), while calling on security agencies to take urgent steps to deal with the heightened insecurity and crime across the country.
Obi also commended south-eastern governors for their efforts in curbing criminal activities in the region, and called for more strategic and intelligence-driven approaches to reduce the suffering on citizens.
“The situation in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau state has raised a lot of anxiety because of the number of lives and properties lost with very little resistance from security operatives,” Obi said.
“Also disturbing is the continued disruption of business and social activities in the South East region over the Sit-at-Home directive purported to be coming from the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, when the body has publicly denied issuing such directive.
“What is going on in the South East therefore is essentially a criminal activity that must be nipped in the bud, with all hands being on deck, security agencies, and the people alike.
“The South East Governors are to be commended for their renewed efforts at curbing this menace but there is a need to be more strategic and intelligence-driven in our approach to reducing the suffering of innocent people.
“Security agencies should take necessary and quick steps to arrest the ugly incidents because the country cannot just be spilling the blood of innocent citizens.
“We as a people through our various governments should up our value for human lives in the way and manner we respond to issues that touch lives.

Kebbi Gov. Nasiru Idris sacks aide for ‘posting gay content’ on WhatsApp status
Kebbi State governor, Nasiru Idris, has sacked Babangida Sarki, his special adviser on youths, for reportedly posting homosexual content on his Whatsapp status over the weekend.
Ahmed Idris, the governor’s media aide, announced the development on Monday, July 10.
According to Premium Times, he said: “The Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Nasiru Idris, relieved his Special Adviser on Youths of his appointment, Babangida Sarki.
The sacking of the S.A. was a sequel to an indecent posting he made on his WhatsApp status.
The Governor, who was enraged by the obnoxious development, said the aide trampled on the moral and social ethos of the Kebbi society, which is largely Islamic.
The governor vowed that his administration would not condone any of such acts that denigrate the morality and integrity of the people of the state.

The Governor also cautioned other public officers against making such heinous postings in their social media handles and other public fora.”
Mr Sarki allegedly uploaded homosexual content on his WhatsApp status over the weekend. The governor, still attending Hajj in Saudi Arabia, sacked Mr Sarki when he learnt of the incident.

CASHLESS POLICY OR NOT, MY ELECTION VICTORY WAS SURE - PRESIDENT TINUBU TO AWUJALE
The President spoke in separate remarks at the palaces of the Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, in Ijebu-Ode and Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, in Abeokuta , during a thank-you visit to the Royal Fathers.
Reflecting on the challenges in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, President Tinubu recounted his concerns about the confiscation of funds and the failure of the cashless policy, and how he had previously sought wisdom and guidance from Oba Adetona during his visit to the palace.

US FTC says Amazon duped millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday accused Amazon.com (AMZN.O) of enrolling millions of consumers into its paid subscription Amazon Prime service without their consent and making it hard for them to cancel, the agency’s latest action against the ecommerce giant in recent weeks.
The FTC sued Amazon in federal court in Seattle, alleging that the company has “knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling in Amazon Prime.” In a statement, Amazon called the FTC’s claims “false on the facts and the law.”

Amazon has used “manipulative, coercive or deceptive user-interface designs known as ‘dark patterns’ to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically renewing Prime subscriptions,” the FTC said as it seeks civil penalties and a permanent injunction to prevent future violations.
The lawsuit is one of several actions taken by President Joe Biden’s administration intended to rein in the outsized market power of Big Tech firms as it tries to increase competition to protect consumers.
The FTC said Amazon Prime is the world’s largest subscription program, generating $25 billion in revenue annually. It offers fast, free shipping on millions of items, various discounts and access to movies, music and television series, as well as other benefits.
Prime members in the United States pay $139 per year and drive much of Amazon’s sales volume. Prime, which has more than 200 million members worldwide, is crucial to Amazon’s other businesses including its streaming service Prime Video and its grocery delivery service.
In its statement, Amazon said, “The truth is that customers love Prime, and by design we make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up for or cancel their Prime membership.”
Amazon added it finds “it concerning that the FTC announced this lawsuit without notice to us, in the midst of our discussions with FTC staff members to ensure they understand the facts, context, and legal issues, and before we were able to have a dialog with the commissioners themselves.”

Parts of Florida’s Broward County are under quarantine after detecting a giant African snail

Broward County in Florida are under quarantine Tuesday after sightings of invasive giant African land snails, known to be one of the most dangerous species, officials said.
The quarantine, announced Tuesday, was established after snails were detected earlier this month in the Miramar area of the county, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said in the news on Tuesday.
Essentially, the quarantine means it is illegal to move a giant African land snail or plants, which includes soil, compost, and yard waste, in or out of the area without a compliance agreement from the agriculture department.
State officials established two treatment areas within the quarantine zone, a map released by the department shows.
African snail
The state agriculture department plans to use the same treatment methodology, which is metaldehyde-based molluscicide, a type of snail bait approved for residential use, according to the news release.
Last year, the New Port Richey area of Pasco County was placed under quarantine after the snails were detected.
Giant African land snails eat at least 500 different types of plants, and they can also chomp through stucco, plastic recycling bins and even signs. Their calcium shells bear pointy edges sharp enough to blow out tires of vehicles that run over them.
“These snails could be devastating to Florida agriculture and natural areas as they cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments,” the state Department of Agriculture said Tuesday.
The snails also pose a health risk to humans because they carry a parasite called rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis, according to the state Department of Agriculture.

President Bola Tinubu has directed operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) to vacate the Lagos headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ikoyi, Lagos.
There had been pandemonium within the vicinity of the EFCC office when men of the DSS reportedly barricaded access into the office area. It was gathered that the contention was all about the ownership of the building.
According to reports, the DSS claimed that the office in contention belongs to it, denying interference in EFCC’s duties but only occupying a building belonging to it.
However, in a statement by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, Tinubu directed the DSS to immediately vacate the disputed premises, saying any disagreement between the agencies of government should be amicably resolved.
“President Bola Tinubu has directed the Department of State Security Service to immediately vacate the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Ikoyi, Lagos.
“The President gave the directive when reports that DSS officials stormed the EFCC office located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday, preventing officials of the anti-graft agency from accessing their workplace, was brought to his attention.

Gunmen kill two US Consulate Staff, set their bodies ablaze in Anambra state
Two staff of the United States Consulate in Nigeria were murdered and their bodies set ablaze by unknown gunmen in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State today May 16.
The US consulate staff were in the area for humanitarian work when they were attacked by the assailants who also killed two PMF (Police Mobile Force) operatives.
The spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed this in a statement released. The statement reads
‘’The Joint Security Forces have embarked on a rescue/recovery operation in Ogbaru LGA, following an attack on a convoy of staff of U S Consulate today 16/5/2023 by 3:30 pm along Atani, Osamale road. The hoodlums murdered two of the PMF operatives, and two staff of the Consulate, and set their bodies ablaze and their vehicles.

Hilda Bassey, known on social media as Hilda Baci, has been dominating headlines around the world ever since she launched her cooking marathon.

She’s hoping to snap up the record title for longest cooking marathon (individual) which currently belongs to Lata Tondon (India) with a time of 87 hr 45 min.

Hilda began cooking on Thursday and continued through to Monday, reportedly whipping up 55 recipes and more than 100 meals in a whopping 100-hour stint.

Anambra Women Protest Against Tradition Of Forcing Widows To Drink Water Washed Off Their Dead Husbands
Some women in Awka, Anambra State, have stood up against barbaric widowhood practices which include being forced to drink from the water with which their late husband’s corpse was bathed preparatory to a burial.

Popular Nollywood actress Ronke Oshodi has come out to clear the air concerning the incident which led to her daughter’s hospitalization three weeks ago.
“Maybe her roommate, maybe her friends deliberately poured Hypo in the water she drank, they wanted to k!ll her” the actress said.
She claims that the culprits knew what they were doing in poisoning her daughter’s drink.
“This is the first and last time, if anything happen to my daughter again, I only gave birth to two, it is only two God gave me. If anything like this happens, I will not take it likely.” The actress issued this warning to the school.
She chose not to mention the school in question, but stated it was a private school and instructed parents to keep an eye on their wards

Herdsmen Crisis In Taraba Claims 20 Lives, Two Nigerian Immigration Officers, Soldier
No fewer than 20 persons have been reportedly killed in a fresh clash between farmers and herdsmen in the Ussa Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The spokesperson of the state police command, SP Usman Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, said the military officer was ambushed and killed while the other persons were either Kuteb or Fulani extractions.
“The military officer who was from the checkpoint coming back to 93 Battalion Barrack was ambushed and killed, though nothing was taken from him, his motorcycle and luckily he has no rifle on him,” Usman stated.
“He was killed by unknown persons and an investigation has been launched to unravel those behind the killing. Statistically, 20 Kuteb indigenes were killed while three Fulani herdsmen also paid the supreme price as a result of the crisis.”

According to Channels Television, the spokesman explained that at the moment, the major problem halting the return of peace is the claim by the Fulani herdsmen that their cattle are held hostage by the Kuteb farmers and the denial from the other end.
Stressing that the problem they faced was that the Fulani claimed their cattle were rustled and held hostage within the Kuteb farmers’ areas while the Kutebs fear going to the farm for fear of attack from the Fulani herdsmen.
“The Commissioner of Police has called on the leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in Ussa and the claimants to discuss, agree and go to where they alleged that their cattle are held hostage for fact-finding as well as the release of same for peace to reign,” the police spokesman added.
He also revealed that two immigration officers and a soldier were ambushed and killed in a separate incident in the Takum LGA of the state.
