President Bola Tinubu Condemns Attack on Donald Trump, Emphasizes That Violence Has No Place in Democracy

Last night, democracy faced one of its most severe attacks. The Republican Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, experienced a close attempt on his life, a moment that will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of Americans.

According to www.mavisblog.com.ng, the attack occurred while former President Donald Trump was delivering a speech to a large audience at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Reports indicate that the gunman fired multiple shots towards the stage where Trump was speaking around 6:15 PM local time (22:15 GMT). The attack left two people injured and one person dead. The assailant, reportedly using a sniper rifle, was neutralized by the U.S. Secret Service.

As global leaders voiced their condemnation, Nigeria's President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also expressed his stance on the attack, emphasizing that violence should have no place in democracy.

In a statement via his official X handle, Tinubu condemned the attack, describing it as abhorrent. He extended his sympathies to Donald Trump and expressed solidarity with the United States.

His statement read:

"The attack on former President Donald Trump is abhorrent and violates the core principles of democratic norms. Violence has no place in democracy.

I extend my sympathies to the former President and wish him swift relief. I also extend my condolences to the family of the deceased and to those wounded, wishing them a speedy recovery.

Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States of America during this challenging time."

So far, the attacker has been declared dead, neutralized by the U.S. Secret Service, and Donald Trump sustained a minor injury, with a bullet grazing his upper ear.

Donald Trump Shot in Failed Assassination Attempt During Presidential Rally in Pennsylvania

Republican Presidential candidate and business mogul, Donald Trump, was shot in the ear after a failed assassination attempt.

Trump, who was seen bloodied after gunshots were fired at his presidential campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was quickly rushed by U.S. Secret Service agents to protect him from further harm.

The gunman fired multiple shots directed at the stage where Trump was speaking at about 6:15 PM local time (22:15 GMT), leaving two people injured and one dead. The assailant, reportedly using a sniper rifle, was neutralized by the U.S. Secret Service.

Trump Releases Statement After Shooting

Reacting to the incident on Truth Social, Donald Trump revealed that the bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear. He also shared his condolences to the families of the deceased victim and those injured. In his words:

"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person who was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

Elon Musk Calls for Resignation of Secret Service Head

Twitter CEO and entrepreneur Elon Musk has called for the resignation of the head of the Secret Service. In a tweet on X, Musk pledged his full support for Donald Trump and wished him a full recovery.

"The head of the Secret Service and the leader of this security detail should resign. I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery."

Democrats React

Prominent members of the Democratic Party have condemned the attack on Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris described the incident as "senseless and having no place in America's democracy." She stated:

"I have been briefed on the shooting at former President Trump’s event in Pennsylvania. Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured. We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting. We are grateful to the United States Secret Service, first responders, and local authorities for their immediate action. Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence."

Former President Barack Obama also condemned the incident on his X handle, asserting that incidents like this should not be part of the nation's democracy. He said:

"There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery."

Politics / Tinubu, Atiku, Sowore Celebrate Professor Wole Soyinka At 90. by Femizin: 3:01pm On Jul 13
Celebrating a Literary Giant: Professor Wole Soyinka at 90

As the world joins in celebrating the 90th birthday of Professor Wole Soyinka, we reflect on the monumental contributions of this literary titan and human rights advocate. Soyinka's life and works have left an indelible mark on literature, culture, and social justice, and his influence continues to resonate across generations and continents.

Born on July 13, 1934, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Soyinka's journey has been one of relentless pursuit of truth and justice. As the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, he has elevated African literature on the global stage. His works, such as "A Dance of the Forests," "Death and the King's Horseman," and "The Man Died," are not just literary masterpieces but also powerful commentaries on societal issues.

Soyinka's dedication to human rights is as profound as his literary genius. Throughout his life, he has stood against oppression and injustice, often at great personal risk. His activism during the Nigerian civil war and his outspoken criticism of corrupt regimes have made him a symbol of resistance and courage. His relentless fight for democracy and human dignity has inspired countless individuals to stand up for their rights and speak truth to power.

In a fitting tribute, President Bola Tinubu acknowledged Soyinka's unwavering commitment to justice and his significant contributions to literature. Tinubu announced the renaming of the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, to The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, a testament to Soyinka's enduring legacy.

"Tomorrow, July 13th, will be the climax of the series of local and international activities held in his honour. To underscore the literary giant's global relevance, a symposium and poetry reading were held in Rabat, Morocco, on 9 July," Tinubu noted. "Professor Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Literature Prize in 1986, deserves all the accolades as he marks the milestone of 90 years on earth."

Professor Soyinka's resilience and indomitable spirit are evident in his personal battles, including his triumph over prostate cancer. This milestone birthday is not just a celebration of his longevity but a recognition of his relentless spirit and the profound impact of his work. His literary achievements and advocacy for human dignity and justice continue to inspire millions worldwide.

Former Nigerian President Atiku Abubakar, in his congratulatory message, eloquently captured the essence of Soyinka's life and legacy: "To truly celebrate Prof Wole Soyinka, you must set forth at dawn. And that would be after a telephone conversation. The man of Ake, despite all the trials of Brother Jero, and at a prime age of 90, remains a virile hunter in our Forest of a Thousand Daemons. Neither death nor the king’s horseman has stopped The Interpreter from his bountiful Kongi’s Harvest and the chronicles of his happy life on earth. Yet, The Man Lives, even in this season of anomy."

Omoyele Sowore also paid tribute to Soyinka, highlighting his fearless and revolutionary spirit: "Happy 90th Birthday to the quintessential, fearless, inimitable, talented, intelligent, inspiring, resilient and revolutionary Prof. Wole Soyinka!"

As we celebrate Professor Soyinka's 90th birthday, we honor not just his literary brilliance but his unwavering dedication to fighting for justice and human rights. His life's work reminds us that literature and drama are powerful tools for challenging the status quo and advocating for a better world.

Happy birthday and congratulations, Professor Wole Soyinka. May you continue to inspire and enlighten us for many more years to come.

What do you think about Professor Wole Soyinka ❤️, Do you also consider him a hero? Let's hear your thoughts. I published the full article on my blog.

Samoa Deal: NBA Reacts, FG Threatens to Sue Daily Trust

The signing of the Samoa agreement has raised stirred several controversy in Nigeria raising questions as to whether LGBTQI has been legalized in the country. Several civil groups, Christian clerics, and Islamic groups in the country have also been vocal in their stance against LGBTQI - a term the Nigerian community has since dissociated itself from.

Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) reactions regarding the LGBTQI controversy.

Reacting as regards the Samoa deal and explaining its meaning and implications to Nigerians, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) disclosed that prior to the signing of the deal, a committee was set up to examine the contents of the deal. Stating that no part of the deal required Nigeria to accept LGBTQI or gay rights as a pre-condition for a $150 billion loan.

Advising the public to query newspaper and social media posts to determine its authenticity, while encouraging the role of the government in enlightening the public on the agreement.

LGBTQI banned by Goodluck's administration

The controversy as regards Nigeria's stance on same-sex marriage, a development now accepted by developed and some developing nations, didn't start today. In 2013, the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act was passed into law by the then administration imposing a sentence of 14 years on gay relationships in the country.

FG threatens to sue Daily Trust

Signed on 28 June 2024, and made public last week, the Daily Trust reported that the deal would result in the legalization of LGBTQI in Nigeria, a claim which the government has blatantly refuted.

The Federal Government has further promised to sue the media company, alleging the organization is characteristic of publishing falsehoods and hearsays.

Speaking in a media meeting in Abuja, the Information Minister, Muhammad Idris, said:

"The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has maintained an open-arm relationship with the media. It is in line with the philosophy of the President as an avowed democrat who spent a lifetime fighting for the entrenchment of democracy and human rights.

"This administration has remained very tolerant of media criticism and guaranteed citizens’ rights to freedom of expression. It is, however, disheartening that some elements are abusing this free environment guaranteed by the Government. We are alarmed by the level of reckless reporting and statements by some media organizations and individuals that border on national security and stability.

"We, however, did not envisage that Daily Trust and people behind it could descend to the reckless level of attempting to set the country on fire by falsely accusing the government of signing a deal to promote LGBTQI.

"We found that despicable and wicked because the allegation is nowhere in the document signed.

"The Federal Government is lodging a formal complaint to the NPAN ombudsman on this irresponsible reporting. In addition, the Federal Government will use every lawful means to seek redress in the court of law."
