Archimedes’ Experiment

This is a common experiment in Physics and related subjects.

Archimedes' principle states: “When a body is totally or partially immersed in a fluid, it experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.”

Materials needed: Eureka can, stone, two beakers, measuring jar and spring balance.

1. A scale is used to measure the weight of an object while a balance is used to measure its mass.
2. The results in using the scale depend on the gravitational pull of the Earth so that measuring objects in high places would result in lesser weight while a balance is not influenced by gravity.
3. A balance is more precise than a scale.
4. The scale is more widely used today than the balance.
5. The Capacity of a weighing scale/balance is the maximum weight that can be placed on the scale or balance.
6. The Readability of a Weighing scale/Balance is the value of the finest division of the scale. This also means the increment of the readings on the scale.

For example, a Scale can have a Capacity of 200kg and Readability of 1kg. This means that the maximum weight the scale can measure is 200kg and this can only be read in units of 1kg.

Making Oxygen

Oxygen can be made from hydrogen peroxide, which decomposes slowly to form water and oxygen:

Hydrogen peroxide → Water + Oxygen
2H₂O₂(aq) → 2H₂O(l) + O₂(g)

The rate of reaction can be increased using a catalyst, manganese(IV) oxide. When manganese(IV) oxide is added to hydrogen peroxide, bubbles of oxygen are given off.
To make oxygen in the laboratory, hydrogen peroxide is poured into a conical flask containing some manganese(IV) oxide. The gas produced is collected in an upside-down gas jar filled with water. As the oxygen collects in the top of the gas jar, it pushes the water out.
Instead of the gas jar and water bath, a gas syringe could be used to collect the oxygen.
