Duncan Mighty sued over alleged breach of contract in Akwa Ibom

The Promoter of Resort Carabana in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Mr Nse Essien, has filed a N10m suit against popular Nigeria musician, Duncan Okechukwu, also known as Duncan Mighty, over an alleged breach of contractual agreement.

The musician was alleged to have collected the sum of N3m from the promoter to perform as a guest artiste during the grand opening of the resort in Uyo but failed to show up at the event.

In a letter dated January 7, 2022, and addressed to Duncan Mighty by Mr Essien’s Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, the complainant said the breach of contract caused a lot of mental distress, financial loss, negative business rating, and reputational damage to the organisers after wide publicity of his (Duncan Mighty) presence at the occasion.

The lawyer, in addition to the payment for damages, is demanding the refund of the sum of N3m already paid and an unreserved public apology which must be published as a video on his Instagram page.

The letter obtained by our correspondent reads in part, “You entered into a contract with our client, under which you accepted our client’s offer to perform as a guest artiste at the grand opening festival of Resorts Carabana held in Uyo on January 2, 2022.

“By the mutually agreed terms of the contract, the consideration for your appearance and musical performance at the event was N2,500,000.00 in addition to the sum of N500,000.00 for business class air tickets since you insisted on travelling by air to Uyo with two members of your crew.

“Our client dutifully fulfilled his obligations under the contract by paying the sum of N3,000,000.00 in two tranches of N2,000,000.00 and N1,000,000.00 respectively, being the cumulative amount accruable to you for your live performance and flight/travel expenses.

“Being a public event, our client embarked on rigorous publicity and spent a significant amount of money on advertorials announcing to the whole world that you, Duncan Mighty, will be performing live at the said event. To the utter consternation and indescribable embarrassment of our client, you failed or refused to attend the well-publicised event.

“Our client has further briefed us that neither you nor any member of your team, deemed it pertinent to reach out to our client after defaulting on your contractual obligation. You treated our client with contempt, not minding that our client had publicised your invitation to the event and spent a considerable amount of money in furtherance of the same.”

It was an atmosphere of funfair at Okobo Local Government Secretariat on Monday as council chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in recognition of his contributions to the development of the local government bestowed an award of merit on the council’s Chairman, Hon. Dr. Sylvester Attah as Staff Friendly Chairman.

The council boss was honoured alongside other awardees during the February Edition of the council's monthly Solemn Assembly held on Monday, February 14, 2022 at the Council Hall, Okopedi.

Receiving the award, the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Sylvester Attah, who thanked the people of Okobo and Governor Udom Emmanuel for giving him the opportunity to serve and responding to the needs of people of the areas, said the local government workforce was instrumental to all he had achieved, saying; "to whom much is given, much is expected".

He appreciated the workers for honouring him and for their support to his administration and pledged sustained efforts in achieving more results;

The Chairperson of NULGE in the council, Comrade (Mrs.) Enang Oyo, while presenting the award commended the council chairman for his harmonious relationship with the union.

She said the award presentation is the union’s way of appreciating the hard work and commitment of staff that deserve it, which according to her, it is also a way of seeking the support of the present administration for improved welfare.

“The award is presented to staff who distinguished themselves in character, hard work, punctuality, socialisation, discipline and dedication to duties.”

Speaking on behalf of the Awardees, Mrs Rosanna Udota, Director of Administration who also received "Staff Friendly Director", thanked the NULGE for the honour done to them, while pledging their continuous support to the Dr. Attah's led administration, which she said they are proud to be associated with.

In his goodwill message, the Vice Chairman of Okobo, Hon. Deacon Asuquo Koffi who described the award of the council chairman as deserving, enjoined the political class and the local government workforce to synergize in increasing productivity of the local government.

*16 DAYS ACTIVISM AGAINST SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS URGES WOMEN TO PLAY ACTIVE ROLE TO END GENDER BASED VIOLENCE*

League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOVW) Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has urged women in the state to play effective roles to put to end gender and sexual violence ( GBV).

The League Chairperson in the state, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey made the call in Uyo on Thursday, December 9, 2021 during a one day sensitization and awareness campaign on Sexual Abuse and Gender-based Violence organized to mark the 16 Days of Activism against GBV.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicked off November 25, on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and runs until December 10, which marks Human Rights Day, according to the UN Women website. The global theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism against GBV which started from November 25, 2021, is ; “Orange The World, End VIOLENCE Against Women Now! “

According to the Chairperson of the League in Akwa Ibom State, who is also the Deputy Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, explained that “there is need to put all hands on deck to save lives of Women, Children and Girls alike based on reported cases, the perpetrators of these crimes are mostly close relatives of the victims, as such , there is need to keep our eyes on our wards”.

She observed that reports have indicated that nearly 1 in 3 women have been abused in their lifetime and in times of crisis and that it became even more worrisome and despicable when a father sexually harasses his own very own daughter, brothers do same to blood sisters, female and male relations, not by any form of consent, but by brute force that lead to eternal scars on the victims.

She lamented that these victims, some of whom might not be bold enough to voice out the indignity and pains they suffer physically, mentally or psychologically, have no means to take good medical care of themselves in most instances and sometimes may have to live in guarded silence with whatever adverse consequences.

Princess Felicia Bassey who doubles as the Chairperson Female Legislators of Nigeria appealed to the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel to give assent to the Law to provide for free, complete and compulsory Medical Treatment and Care for Child Victims/ Persons of Sexual Violence and for related Matters which was passed into Law by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to enable appropriate agencies and institutions involved to invoke the law on defaulters and perpetrators of Sexual Violence in the State. She said the bill came both as an advocacy and initiative by the legislature to take a little but conscious step further by developing a legal model that provides for compulsory medical treatment for victims of sexual violence or abuse.

She acknowledged the unrelenting efforts of Akwa Ibom State Governor's wife, Dr. Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel, in aggressively launching sensitization, advocacy and awareness campaigns against rape and other sexual abuses against the Child Victim, expressing hope that the bill when assented to by the Governor will compliment Her Excellency's role and drastically reduce the ugly menace in the Society. She added that the League seeks to empower Nigerian Women both politically and economically for National Development.

Also speaking, Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Sufficiency, Dr. Glory Edet said women make up to 50 per cent of society, and not representing them socially and politically will hinder any economic growth, and eventually the thriving and prosperity of society. She noted the importance of empowering women and girls through education and skills acquisition, which gives them better choices and chances.

Dr. Glory also illustrated the plight of survivors and victims of domestic violence, the obstacles faced when seeking support and highlighted the need to criminalize domestic violence.

Also speaking, Honorable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan
said the walk was to amplify public awareness on the need for prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

Dr. Adiakpan noted that one in three women across the world experience violence in their lifetime. This means more than 1 billion women and girls face physical or sexual abuse. Physical, sexual-based and emotional violence doesn’t discriminate but affects women of all ages and backgrounds, hence the need to increasing awareness about gender-based violence and crimes.

Chairperson House of Assembly Committee on Public Account and member representing Ukanafun State Constituency, Hon. Charity Ido, Executive Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Lady Emem Ibanga, immediate past Chairman of Eastern Obolo, Hon. Victoria Tallick and other participants who spoke during the strategic campaign, shared their experience supporting survivors of gender-based violence and the need to strengthen existing response mechanisms, including increasing the numbers of female employees as a crucial step to strengthen the trust between survivors who seek for support and the existing institutions. In addition, participants highlighted the need to criminalize violent crimes committed at home and to enact anti-domestic violence law as a crucial step to counter gendered misconceptions and reluctance to address societal norms and behaviour to criminalise violence in the State.

The campaign aims to get the whole world involved in the conversation, generating awareness, sharing important information, and highlighting ways women can all help tackle the global epidemic of sexual and gender-based violence.

The visit which took place at The Information Center, Chritmas Village, was to commend the Akwa Ibom Government for the giant strides in the tourism industry as evidence in the popular Christmas Village, and to also intimate him of the plans for the epoch-making Dakkada BeautyPageant.

Commissioner for Tourism Orman Esin received the team with joy, and applauded the MMDBP Team for the idea behind the Dakkada pageant project, saying "it is line with the vision of His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel.

He pledged government support to the Pageant, as he said "it will provide the platform for exploration of talents in the State."

AKWA IBOM DEPUTY SPEAKER HOST OKOBO YOUTHS TO A THANK - YOU MEETING FOLLOWING THEIR SUPPORTS TOWARD THE SUCCESS OF HER SECOND TERM IN OFFICE

The Honourable Deputy Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, and Member, Representing Okobo State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey hosted a cross section of Okobo Youths to a "Thank-You" meeting on the event of their unanimous agreement and support for her second term representation at Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly .

The youths who practically demonstrated their readiness to secure a second term mandate for the Deputy Speaker and Member Representing Okobo State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey on August 30, 2018, purchased and presented nomination form to the law maker and unanimously adopted her as their candidate during the 2019 general elections and vowed to defend their votes.

The lawmaker, Rt. Hon. Felicia Bassey recalling the 'August 30th 2018 gesture, called for a "Thank-You" meeting of the youths to appreciate them for the success of her second term bid in office, held at her Uyo residence. She thanked the leaders and representatives of various youth groups who joined in the presentation of the nomination form and their mobilization of the people for the success of the election.

The elated Deputy Speaker having shown her appreciation by fulfilling her campaign promises through the facilitation of employment, empowerment and appointment of youths into various political positions, amongst others. She has recently given mass empowerment to the youths and women through cash donations and scholarships to over 45 indigent students studying in various higher institutions of learning across the globe.

Princess Felicia also expressed her gratitude to Okobo youths for supporting Governor Udom Emmanuel to his victory and announced that PDP has become a Household name in Okobo. The Law maker further described the youths as true democrats, target oriented achievers and a collective body who stood firm to achieve their goals for the betterment of their society.

She however assured that she will continue to enthrone inclusive leadership, turn boys to men, give quality representation that will bring growth and development as well as touching lives positively in Okobo State Constituency .
