adewaleafolabi: @adewaleafolabi. I am sorry about my statement, I didn't mean it as an insult whatsoever. What I meant was that there were a lot of stuff on the CDs. A DVD version of Ubuntu rocks (a friend of mine used to have it). Wassup with your modem? Any good news? @esquire. Well, you've got a point. By the way, I don't doubt Ubuntu's supremacy in the distro race; but like Suse, it's one of the best. It was designed for ease of use by an average computer user and it has met up with it's purpose. For servers, software development, mathematical computations & representation, sound, image and video editing, and other intensive jobs, that single CD may not meet up. That's when you will need the DVD version or updated one. Suse has helped me with all of these without much stress (since I can be very lazy -- that's why I HATE Fedora!!!). I must confess that Ubuntu has better support for my VAIO laptop (all the shortcut buttons work) than my Suse but it is still too empty for me to do my work. But you know, I may be missing something . |
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 1:58pm On Jan 20, 2007 |
Well, agree with you partially. I think Ubuntu is too empty. To optimize it, you'll need good bandwidth to download updates OR get the DVD version. Suse comes bundled with 5 CDs -- do you have an idea of what is packed inside that. While I will recommend Ubuntu for newbies, I say get Suse or updated Ubuntu (or a Debian distro) if you wanna move ahead in you Linux race. I forgot Fedora Core, niggy forgive me. |

adewaleafolabi: @Esquire, please show me the way. adewaleafolabi, I support you as per the Suse thing. I think it's one of the best distros on the planet right now. Bliv me, you won't miss windows for a long time if you use it. |
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 11:53pm On Jan 19, 2007 |
@adewaleafolabi. What can I say? I'm so sorry for not being around but more emphatic about your problem. I think you should try using an Extra-Initialization string for your modem in the wvdial.conf file. Add a line like: Init3 = AT+CBST=0,0,1;+CHSN=2,0,0,0;+CGDCONT=,,"internet"<cr> OR Init3 = +MODE=2 Replace "internet" with your access point name. It may be wap. That is the init string for Nokia phones (to the best of my knowledge). I hope it works. Try the second one first. How come your gprs is still working? Mine has been dead since like forever. @niggy. R u sure no one has talked about Suse? I use 9.3 on my desktop on 10.1 on my laptop -- 10.1 is on FIRE!!! Ciao |

Hi guys! Adewale, do you really think you still want the bluetooth lessons? Celtel had decided to strip users of their connection -- too bad! About the MP3 thing, I think your best bet is find a way to connect your pc to a fast internet connection. I don't know about Ubuntu but in Suse 9.3, there's only one file you have to download (libmad) to get MP3 playback support. Sorry, I wish I could help I guess that some of Linux's demons , |

Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 11:58pm On Oct 08, 2006 |
Ok guys, I have gotten the configuration file. I am actually sending this thread from a Ubuntu (Ubuntu 6.0 Live CD) box, using Celtel via my phone (with BT). The configuration details is used to connect are below: [Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/rfcomm0 Baud = 115200 Phone = *99***5# Username = wap Password = wap Stupid mode = yes Yeap, that's all! No story! How to use: 1) Open a terminal. On Ubuntu, Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal 2) Type 'wvdial'. This is just to know if it's there. 3) Login as root: type 'sudo su' and enter password if prompted 4) Type 'gedit /etc/wvdial.conf &' OR 'kwrite /etc/wvdial.conf &' to open a graphical editor for your system to edit the config file. 5) Copy and paste the above into the file, as in, either overwrite it or change the parameters above in the file you have opened. 6) Ensure that parameter Modem is set to what your system points to e.g mine is /dev/rfcomm0, adewale's own is /dev/ttyACM0, esquire's is /dev/I_dunno_yet 7) Use the correct number. *99***5# points to Access connection on my phone, find out yours. You can experiment from 0 to 9, at least one will click . Save the file. 9) Go back to the Terminal and type 'wvdial'. If your connection is successful, you can close the editor, otherwise, modify the file to improve settings and try to connect again. 10) Post any errors here, I'm sure there will be someone to help out I hope you're successful, your patience will be rewarded. By the way, if you're using Access!WAP, don't forget to set your browser's proxy address to 172.18.254.5 |
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 7:23pm On Oct 08, 2006 |
@adewale I really don't think the problem is with celtel. I connect 24/7 with celtel (I bet you do so on windows too). If the PPP daemon keeps dying, there's still something wrong with the config. Do you see any indication on your phone when it is trying to connect? Is it possible to paste the errors you get? There is a command line utility for connection on many Linux distros: wvdial. I will write a configuration file for you so that you can connect with it. I was trying to avoid command line but I guess that's the way forward now. I will first configure it on my machine so please give me some time. @esquire Well, I think there's hope for the sagem. Your box seems to detect it well. Do you think you can identify the address of your device as in /dev/ttyblabla. Run dmesg | grep -i modem OR dmesg | grep -i usb At least one of them should give an indication what points to your phone. See adewale's thread on page 14 for clarification. You guys should be patient, you will love the experience. By the way, you should be informed that this is basically not a Linux issue, you're actually learning how your phone works - Linux just opened a way for that. I sure hope that you get the *99***X# part, that is very important. If you're successful, you will be able to use your phone with almost any computer device for internet. For example, I use my phone for internet on my PDA via infrared and on my friend's PDA (and my computer) via bluetooth. I have also used a serial cable for connection. The only part that deals with Linux is for it to identify the device and create an address for it (i.e the ttyblabla stuff) successfully. As Niggy says, if you wanna learn about computing, use Linux! You're on your road to computing freedom! Please chill for the wvdial configuration. @kelewax Wow! Puppy is sure powerful. Do you know if it's possible to use it on a microprocessor chip or something like that. DSL can also be run from the RAM but I don't know of the mutlisession thing - that's too much! |
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 12:38pm On Oct 07, 2006 |
Have you used Damn Small Linux? It is also quite powerful. I used to have it in my flash a long time ago for instant linux access . I've seen puppy before but didn't know it could do all the things your pointed to in your thread |
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 4:27am On Oct 07, 2006 |
@adewale, hmnn:?$%# I think you're very near the promise land. At least your computer is communication with your phone now (anytime you try to connect, you see an indication on your phone, abi?). As per the problem of X in *99***X#, I think you should experiment from 0-9, one of them will be correct. I just discovered that my method for knowing X was a fluke . In my previous thread, I said that X was the index number of the connection profile, e.g on my phone 1 MMS 2 Access 3 Access!WAP since I was using Access!WAP, mine was 3. I was wrong! Each connection profile has a unique ID (called External ID on SonyEricsson Phones). It is this number that should be X. On my phone for instance, the external IDs of the connection are MMS 2 Access 5 Access!WAP 3 Can you now see why mine was fluke? The Access!WAP index no and ID are the same. I think the real challenge for you will be getting this number. On my phone it was in the Connection Details section. That's why I said that you should experiment, it's seems faster or you may just check the number that Windows dials when it wants to connect using your phone. /*Extra info Just to be sure, I hope that you set your phone to data communication mode. I also discovered something like that on my friend's L6, it's under Connections -> USB -- something like that. I don't think it should be an issue since your kernel has loaded the cdc_acm module (that's the ttyACM0 stuff). */ If you eventually get it working, I will love to learn how you did it. Please use that Access connection to browse, it's better than WAP. I've been enjoying it of late . I'm a click away if you need more clarification. @esquire I just have a few questions: Have you ever used your phone to browse on Windows? Have you tried any of the steps in my previous (and other) threads? If you have, at what point are you stuck? I'm really sorry that I don't know much about your phone but I did love to help in any way. Cheers mate! |

What can I say? I'm glad to be back. Esquire nice one! You seem to be so sure that I'm a gurl -- here's from me to you . What kinda of phone are you using? I never got the name in your previous threads. Adewale, hmnn, how can I help you? I have not had an experience with a Motorola Phone, so use my advice without expecting any warranty . First ACM is an USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters. That's what the log file you copied showed. So in your case the device you should point to is /dev/ttyACM0. The next thing is the number you'll dial. It's *99***X# What is X? On my phone (SE K700i), I have 3 internet profiles: MMS Access Access!WAP in that order. Since I use Access!Wap (AW for short) to connect on my machine, X for me is 3. On your phone it may be different. If you're not sure of the order, you can experiment with all of them. By the way, I can only use AW profile to connect on my machine, the other two don't connect at all. About username and password, I use wap and wap respectively even though the AW profile on my phone is blank for these fields. Reason: my connection manager (YaST2 modem on Suse) forces me to specify a username and password. That's about all the advice I can give you for now. Please post any problems you may have. By the way, Ubuntu is very good with things like this. Don't bother about the phone name, it may be a wrong ID issue (that's gist for another day). I hope that helps? About the Linux/Windows things , I reserve my comments. Niggy, I'm on your side ! |

What can I say? You've said it all Niggy! If you're using an NVIDIA card on your machine, it is much easier to configure it for 3d apps. NVIDIA installation is pretty straightforward but you may need to modify the xorg.conf file (in you're not using Suse). Funny enough, you've gotta ensure that those 2 lines are there: load glx load dri Up till now, I never understood what DRI was. It think that with a good graphics card, you can get a lot of FPS for your video. I got an average of 5500fps on my own machine (NVIDIA GeForce 2 -- 32MB with Windowmaker Window Manager) after running glxgears. I bet very serious gamers will have far better cards! I also agree with you on CUBE, it's somehow like quake. FooBillard is a winner. BZFlag aint bad too. There are a lot of games on my box by default, I don't get to play them |
Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 1:38am On Aug 12, 2006 |
Wow! I have always hated Fedora since the Red hat days, that's why I went for mandrake. The fact that I had to type /sbin/fdisk instead of fdisk (like my mandrake) was very annoying. At that time, I was not bothered about updating my .profile file . The GUI was so annoying! I started to bone mandrake when I started to use Suse and after they changed the name to Mandriva Seriously, the reason I use Suse is because of it's awesome support for my device off the box and Novell's participation. It is also a developer's haven. So many things came off the box with it. It is simple and yet can outperform Fed Core X in many ways. I won't deny that Fed is a power horse (many of my friends are Fed boys) but I guess Suse 9.3 (I may not upgrade until forever) suits me perfectly. Thank God for improved GUI from Fed 4 upwards. I also didn't like Suse 10. I still use mandrake on my second machine (P233, 96MB, 2gig) for testing stuff especially network related things. About CLI, I love it. I think I can do faster things. Infact when I want to capture videos, it's best that I do it without X running. It's clean to configure network services, bluetooth profile, etc through CLI. Believe me, you'll get to a stage where you won't want to keep tinkling with command line except when necessary esp if you have GUI interface that are robust enough like what Suse YAST or the Drake tools for Mandrake. Sincerely, I think that there should be a balance. Although my brother keeps accusing me of using CLI too much, I think I gradually attaining that balance. Sorry if my thread doesn't make complete sense |

Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by fisayo: 10:52am On Aug 08, 2006 |
Hmmn , I'm back to this thread! I sincerely think that Linux rocks! The issue may be on the "usability" and I think that is simply becuase so many peeps are used to windows and naturally may not be able to change. Those people will probably have issues with Mac. Sincerely, installing Linux may be a challenge to a noob but it is definitely not as complex as dealing with dependency issues when installing rpms or source files -- that is a pain in the neck. Windows has it right with those, I will be sincere. Gaming is also awesome on windows. One more thing is that there are like infinity number of developers available for windows software and I guess that's what's really keeping Microsoft. All of that said, let's face why you want to use your computer - you need it to be productive. I'm an engineer (well student engineer) and I've come to realise that Linux is awesome for my kind. First, it is super stable and highly secure. Second, I just get the tools I need to be very effective at work and in cases where it's not feasible, I can tweak my OS to meet my requirements. The tools I use right now are below: Maxima - for symbollic computations Octave - Numerical computations -- like matlab Scilab - Another software for numerical computations GNU C++ - Do I have to describe? GNU CLisp (Common Lisp) -- if you know AI, then you should have heard of LISP Will continue later -- NEPA has struck! As I was saying, MATLAB - A real winner in numerical computing (DSP, Neural Networks, Image Processing, Simulation, gosh! , ) OpenGL - Great for producing 3D animations (if you can code it well, I can't yet ) Firefox - For research. Don't mess with tabbed browsing. If you've used it once, you'll forever hate MS Explorer v6 downwards kdissert - mindmap tool that help me in generating reports OpenOffice - Awesome office suite. I get create scientific documents with formulas on the fly. I prefer it to the ANNOYING equation editor on M$ Office. Kontact - PIM software to keep me organized GNU Cash - Keeps my finances in check When I'm not doing school work, I get to do some media editing and encoding Mencoder - for encoding video files (.mov,.avi,.mpeg,.flv,.mp4(with AAC support) and others) straight from tv, dvds, vcds, audiocds, etc. MainActor - Video editing digiKam - Used for managing my photos GIMP - A formidable Adobe Photoshop rival Audacity - for mixing sounds Lame - best mp3 encoder around k3b - 4 burning VCDs, SVCDs, MixedMode CDs, AudioCDs. I can't remember when last I formatted my computer for anything. I've even forgotten how to scan for viruses. Disk checks are automatic, all my devices are supported (I even browse through my SE k700i). It's important to add that I don't have a killer computer but Linux uses it to perform great feats. SPECS: AMD AthlonXP 2600+ (Barton) ASRock Mobo 256MB DDR 50Gig NVIDIA GeForce2 64MB (with 17" LG monitor - forget the screen quality) Liteon CDWriter LifeView TV Card That's just a few of the things I do with Linux, why won't I love GNU/Linux? |

Investment / How Can The Stock Market Help An Average Nigerian? by fisayo: 6:27am On Jun 12, 2006 |
Hi! I've been wondering how participation in the stock market can help an average Nigerian. By average, I mean your next door neighbour, your customer in the market (grocery store? ), etc. Recently, there has been an explosion in the Capital market with IPOs coming very regularly from banks. Obviously, more people are participating in the sector but can it help them? Or is there a class that the market can help? I sincerely would love your opinions. |

Phones / Need help with Vmobile internet service on Treo 270 (Palm Phone) by fisayo: 8:48am On Dec 19, 2005 |
Hi guys! I have a Treo 270 palm phone and I'm connected to the Vmobile network. I want to use the phone for web services but I can't. I can connect to the GPRS network and access only WAP pages using a WAP browser. However, I want to be able to do other things like chatting, accessing web pages, remote ssh connection, etc; in short have full access to the internet. I have all the software I need for these services on my phone but I always get a "connection error". Browsing only wap pages can be very boring. Thanks! |

Hi! I have been using Linux stictly for one and a half years and it's really awesome. I don't know where some of you guys got the idea that it's not ripe for desktop use yet. My whole family(mum, dad, brother, sister and puppy ) uses Linux comfortably. My brother (younger) does image editing (GIMP) and burns CDs stress free (K3B). My sis (younger) does some school research off the web(FIREFOX) and some chatting(GAIM). She also shows off her album (DIGIKAM). My mum and dad use it for office documents (OPENOFFICE). My puppy, well..., just plays with the keyboard. I use it for music management along with syncing with my mp3 player (AMAROK, XMMS, BEEP, etc,) videos (infact I have configured a film server on a P233 mach), little audio editing (audacity), some programming (basically C++), simulation and modelling (octave, maxima and scilab), drawing of schematics (chemical flow) using DIA. I also use a PIM package (Kontact), an personal accounting manager (GNUCASH) and I also sync info on my Palm PDA with it. My machine is the heart of my home network. It's got Samba running for Windows services (for file and print services), it's a proxy server to share our internet connection and an FTP server (pretty redundant). I must confess that I miss some things with Windows XP: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Norton ATV annoying popups Defragmentation and manual disk checks Occasional reinstallation of the operating system because of degrading performance with time Regular visits to Otigba for pirated software (hey, I can't afford origos) Under-utilization of computer hardware Multi user lies can't remember the rest That's just some stuff we do with Linux @ HOME and I'm the only "techie" in my family. Not ripe for home use? Think again! Gnu/Linux & OpenSource RULES!!! |
