Politics / Impeachment: Anti-jonathan Senators Meet Today by foresightcash(m): 3:27am On Dec 01, 2014
The 63 senators who had signed up to remove President Goodluck Jonathan will meet on Monday (today) evening to perfect their strategy for making it a reality.

One of the coordinators of the impeachment plan, who made this known to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, said the agenda of the meeting would centre on how to handle the case on the floor of the Senate.

But the senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, did not disclose the venue of the meeting for security reasons.

He said, “All of us will meet tomorrow (Monday) evening to discuss when we are going to move the motion on the floor of the Senate. We have an appreciable number already and I believe that more people will join when they see the seriousness with which we are going about it.

“Some of our colleagues were saying that we don’t have the will to move it (impeachment motion) on the floor. We will soon execute our plans because it is in the best interest of all Nigerians”

Already, the senator representing Yobe South Senatorial District in the upper chamber, Alkali Jajere, and his colleague from Niger North, Ibrahim Musa, have explained their involvement in the planned impeachment moves.

The two senators, in separate interviews on Sunday, said they signed up for the impeachment because of their conviction that Jonathan had engaged in a series of constitutional breaches.

Jajere alleged that the poor handling of the insurgency in the North-East by the Jonathan administration despite huge sums of money being voted for the military, was deliberate.

He said, “Are we going to wait and continue to tolerate a leader who, cannot stop the daily physical and psychological torture of people in the North-East. The insurgency in the zone is threatening the corporate existence of Nigeria and the earlier we act, the better.’’

Also, Musa alleged that Jonathan government’s “insincerity” in tackling the economic crisis facing the country was enough grounds to initiate an impeachment move against him.

He said, “The President has been breaching the constitution over the years and we have tolerated it enough. This government has not been implementing the budget and that is why we are having problems with our economy.”

One of the arrowheads of the move to remove Jonathan, on Thursday, showed our correspondent the list containing the signatures of 63 senators.

The source said eight Peoples Democratic Party senators were among the signatories to the planned impeachment notice. There are 109 lawmakers in the Senate.

An All Progressives Congress senator from the North-West, who asked not to be named, told our correspondent that the lawmakers’ major grouse against the President was the manner he had been handling the economic and political affairs of the country.

The senator cited poor implementation of the national budget since 2011, alleged high level of corruption and “gross disregard” for the legislature at both the federal and state levels as some of the reasons they were angry with Jonathan.
Politics / Kano Bombing: Nigeria Being Misgoverned, Says Sultan-led JNI by foresightcash(m): 3:18am On Dec 01, 2014
The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, said on Sunday that the multiple explosions in the Kano Central Mosque was an indication that the country was being misgoverned.

Addressing journalists in Kaduna on Sunday, the Secretary-General of the JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu, said the JNI as a body would not be cowed in observing the way and manner Muslims were being killed in the North.

While condemning the multiple attacks on the Kano Central Mosque, Abubakar-Aliyu urged Muslims to take defensive measures permitted within the law to protect themselves since the government had clearly failed to do so.

The JNI scribe said the Islamic body was shocked and pained by the attack on the Kano mosque and the consequent death of over 120 worshippers.

He blamed the government for the bombings in the north, noting that it appeared the government wanted to justify the essence of the extension of the emergency rule in the three North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

The JNI scribe said, “But must blood be spilled to justify the extension of state of emergency? Why is it that any time the ineffective state of emergency is about to elapse and/or an extension is being sought, attacks are carried out with sophistication?

“Are we really aware of the repercussions of spilling the blood of innocent souls? What is the essence of the government’s war on terror and its attendant huge budget? Where are the intelligence and security agencies?

“Can we afford to continue relying on them for our safety and security? Why? We ask ad infinitum with no satisfactory answers.

“Without mincing words, Nigeria is being misgoverned to the brink!”

Abubakar-Aliyu said the JNI condemned the multiple bomb blasts and urged the Muslim community to recite special prayer to end the insurgents’ activities in the North.

He also wondered why government was yet to prosecute anybody in the coordinated attacks that occurred in Kano last year.

“JNI will not be deterred nor cowed in observing the way and manner Muslims are being killed in Nigeria, particularly in the North,” he added.

Politics / I’ll End Insurgency If Elected President – Buhari by foresightcash(m): 3:10am On Dec 01, 2014
A former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has promised to end insurgency and other forms of insecurity in the country, if elected President under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections.

The pledge is coming amidst rising insurgency by the Boko Haram Islamic sect in the North-East and especially the Friday’s attack on Kano Central Mosque

He also denied sharing money to delegates during his recent visit to Imo State during his nationwide tour to meet the APC delegates.

The Head (Media, Publicity and ICT) in Buhari Support Organisation, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, stated this in his weekly brief on “GMB meet the party delegates nationwide tour,” read to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

“At no time did GMB, all through this meet the delegates tour, share money or lobby any delegate with money. As we all know, a leopard can never change its spot. Friends and sympathisers may have privately encouraged their colleagues to attend the delegates’ meeting, certainly not GMB directing or approving any monetary exchange, as being falsely reported by some online media,” he stated.

In his nationwide tour to meet delegates, Buhari had visited Abia, Bayelsa, Imo, Delta, Cross River and Rivers states, where Governor Rotimi Amaechi described him as a committed and focused leader whose watchword was integrity.

Maduekwe said, “The summary of all the response and the welcoming remarks by GMB at various state capitals can be summarised. He made it clear that this country must first be secured and efficiently and effectively managed if our nation is to bounce back to normalcy for our people to prosper. Leadership integrity must be the focused watchword if we must salvage Nigeria once again.

“We recall that we fought a civil war without borrowing a kobo. But now, despite budgeting well over 25 per cent of the national annual budget to defence, we are borrowing $1bn to prosecute insurgency. Yet, all we keep hearing is the low morale of our fighting forces as they melt before the rampaging ill-trained insurgents.

“A situation where about 20 LGAs of this country are under an alien flag can no longer be tolerated. APC is ready to turn the tide to bring Nigeria back into the fold of proud and respectable community of African nations. Our watch-word is: Securing our nation, prospering our people.”

He added, “One is worried to read about Nigerian soldiers giving interview to foreign media on how under-equipped they are as they face the insurgency. Effort by the National Assembly to conduct hearing on such sad development is hushed down. Same as the NASS hearing on the subsidy scam which till this date has remained a mystery to our general public.”

Buhari has also asked Nigerians to make sure their votes count during the 2015 general elections.

Buhari spoke at a reception organised for him at the APC secretariat in Enugu State on Saturday evening, where he observed that soldiers engaged in the campaign against terrorism and insurgency had complained of inadequate weapons, despite the huge security budget, as well as lack of effective leadership.

“Vote and make sure that your votes count,” Buhari told the gathering, including leaders and members of the APC state chapter as well as national delegates from the state.

He urged eligible voters to obtain the permanent voter card, which he described as the “ammunition” to rout the Peoples Democratic Party during the election.

The presidential aspirant noted that there was no point in asking the people to come out to meet him if they did not have voter cards.

Stressing the need to vote out the PDP in the coming polls, Buhari said 2015 would be a very crucial year for Nigeria.
